Through 10 weeks (and Thursday night's game) of the NFL season, the league average team is scoring 21.7 PPG. Cleveland? A lousy 8.7 PPG. At 13.0 PPG below average through 10 games, that makes the Browns the 2nd worst scoring team through 10 games since 1950.

In fact, two other teams this season join the list of the worst 30 offensive teams of the past 60 seasons:

CODE

team
Oakland Raiders after removal of Russell

We all know Oakland has sucked. Since the Superbowl loss in 2002 they have been the worst team in the league. However during this time they have accumulated some pretty strong talent (Russel and DHB notwithstanding). I have a funny feeling that a simple change to Gradkowski could really kick start this team.

Look at the quotes below (taken from PFT):
"You want to make a play for your quarterback but when he shows that type of passion for the game, obviously guys are going to feed off it and try to give him that same effort," Fargas said.

"It's gone good. Bruce gives us the best chance to win right now," Miller said. "We've got to be out there and play better football than we have in the last few games here."

This looks to be a team that didn't feel they had anyone to follow, and are now relieved to feel they finally have a chance. Sure, I'm reading between the lines but when a team with the number of losses the Raiders have had seems to really support the switch I think it is telling you they didn't believe in what was back there and see opportunity.

There is not one Oakland Raider on any roster in my FFL league. Not one out of 180 players. This time of year waiver pickups are beyond scarce. Someone is going to end up producing from this team so let's review:

QB: Gradkowski - Given the lack of competant WRs it probably is unlikely you would ever consider this option.

RB: Fargas/Bush/McFadden: The hard working vetern, the guy who busted off 177 at the end of last year, or the talented #4 overall pick. Schedule is not great but there is talent amongst that group and considering the OLine, which is a fairly strong group it's possible any of these players could start to excel.

WR: DHB will not be startable, but Chaz Schillens was the talk of the preseason on this board until he got hurt. Finally healthy from the foot injury and back in the starting lineup. He's not going to be MSW or Miles Austin, but entirely possible that he could be a low WR3 or WR4 from here on out. Given what's available in most waiver wires that can be hard to find.

TE: Miller I think will really jump up the ratings in the next few weeks. I think he is the most talented receiver in this group and will give Gradkowski a safe option in the middle. He won't overtake TGonz or Celek, or some similar TE but if you are struggling with the loss of Daniels or stuck playing Whac a Mole with your TE I really believe he is going to have an impact.

K: Janikowski has been very good given his opporutnities. Hard to start him over any of the normal top 12 kickers because of the current lack of offense but if things pick up you may keep an eye on him.

deep dynasty running backs

I saw the post (by black) on fantasy RBs to covet, but I thought I'd get opinions on deeper RBs. for instance on my team I have:

Jason Snelling - a great pick-up given what happened to Turner. Better than average talent as a RB and a pass catcher. But what is his long-term future?

Willis McGahee - It is hard to give up on him. He will be playing for somewhere else next year, and it MIGHT be just what the doctor ordered. Any thoughts on him?

Bernard Scott - I like what I have in this rookie RB who will get his first start this Sunday.

Jerome Harrison - What in hell happened to this guy. Lots of talent as a runner and a receiver. I've heard that he's a sub-par pass blocker but that might not account for the total reason he's in Mangini's doghouse. And what if Mangini was gone? Anybody have any insights on Harrison's real potential or am i barking up the wrong tree?Kory Sheets - I've SEEN this kid's talent. His problem was that he was 5'11 195 around the combine time. I understand he's 'bulked up' to 208. I'll be very interested to see if he becomes the #2 behind Ricky Williams now. (Even though Miami seems to favor the power running game of Lex Hilliard, I'm betting on Sheets to emerge as #2 by the end of the year.)

Arian Foster - The Texans want to see what they've got in this rookie power RB, so I expect some work very shortly. I'd like to see myself. What is your take on this guy's potential?

I'm also thinking about Jalen Parmele who COULD be the #2 RB in BALT next year. Worth a pick-up?

I'd appreciate your comments on any of these guys, and are there any others that fit the "deep dynasty" RB profile, but with perhaps more potential?

If you were a rich NFL owner, how much would you give up for a title?

This is a very simplistic question and I understand there are many more factors that go into this. Bottomline, however, is that some owners seemingly don't care about putting a winning product on the field as long as they are making money.

So, let's assume you're a very wealthy owner of an NFL team. You can spend more money on a better head coach, better players, better everything and increase your chances of winning a title but this money is coming from YOUR pocket. Let's also keep in mind that we often remember the Head Coach and the players when talking about previous Super Bowl champions, but the owners aren't usually given as much recognition or credit.

Let's assume you're worth $1 billion.

Anyone worried about Colts being benched in week 16?

If the Colts go 14-0, 13-1, or even 12-2 through week 15, they could have home field advantage already wrapped up before week 16. If that's the case, the Colts' starters would still start, but might get pulled after the first quarter or at halftime. In 2005, the Colts went 13-0 before losing in week 15. In week 16, Manning started, but only threw 12 passes before being pulled from the game. That probably cost many owners a win in their championship game. With the Colts running away with the conference, is anyone worried about Manning, Wayne, Clark, and Addai seeing limited action in week 16 this year?

A question for commissioners

I'm sure I'm going to get a lot of 'its his time, he can manage it however he wants' answers to this, but I wanted to see what people thought:

I'm in a unique keeper league. You can't just drop and add players on a whim. You can acquire a free agent's rights and use him but in a somewhat limited basis.

Here's the situation. Due to roster sizes, byes and playing requirements, Kevin Kolb is a free agent in my league. A team that is perennailly out of it, has decided that KK is going to start next year in Philly. Fine. But in order to add him to his roster for 2010, he needs to pick him up in a weekly move that forces him to start him this week ... basically ensuring a zero. Now, I don't want to get into a debate over whether or not the rule is good; I think it is.

Rather, my question is, would you allow a guy to pick up a player and start him in this situation, knowing he is taking a 0 and affecting the leage. It's total points, so from a head-to-head standpoint, its not like he's giving someone a win.

Trade after trade deadline

In total points league I play in a trade was made week 9, I just looked at the Transaction report last night since week 8 as I wanted to make a move. Last 2 years myself and another owner have asked to move trade deadline back to week 12. League voted it down each time as only 3 total teams voted to move it back. Now two teams vote against it made the trade and a team in the one of the money spots gained points with TJ Housamama for Kevin Smith.

Commish was there and I told him he had to he had to cancel trade and give owners zeros for those two players if they are started. His response was he could not change it and made a mistake, and could not reverse it. Owners there are split on the trade some see no big deal while others are upset as the rules have been broken.

16 points is a lot, last year I beat the commish by 2 points to win league. Am I over the top with this complaint??

NFL Rules Question

Late in the game Carolina scored a TD which cut the lead to 17-12. After the TD, the Panthers got a 15-yard personal foul penalty that was assessed on the kick off. My question is this: Couldn't Miami have taken the penalty on the conversion attempt?

If they could have it was very stupid not to. Carolina was obviously going to go for 2, and if they were pushed from the 2 yard line to the 17 yard line they almost certainly wouldn't have gotten it. To me 15 yards there is FAR more important than semi-meaningless(by comparison) field position on a kickoff.

To me that decision(assuming its an option, which I know it used to be) was a much worse decision than Belichick going for it on 4th and 2 and yet the announcers made no mention of it at all. Obviously it didn't hurt Miami in the long run(thanks Ricky) but without knowing the outcome it seemed like a decision that was lacking in common sense.

Housh seems to have regrets about not going to Vikings

LINK

QUOTE

Houshmandzadeh chose Seahawks over Vikes

By JON KRAWCZYNSKI AP Sports Writer

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn.(AP)—When T.J. Houshmandzadeh(notes) made a free agent visit to Minnesota at the beginning of March, he was impressed by everything he saw. Well, almost everything.

Owner Zygi Wilf cut short a vacation and presented a competitive offer. Receivers coach George Stewart made the veteran feel like the missing piece to the puzzle and coach Brad Childress made it clear how much they valued Houshmandzadeh’s services.

“It was just a class organization,” Houshmandzadeh said.

All except for the quarterback. The Vikings were preparing to go into training camp with Sage Rosenfels(notes) and Tarvaris Jackson(notes) in a competition for the job. That was enough for Houshmandzadeh to sign a five-year, $40 million contract with Seattle instead.

“You knew Minnesota had a good team. It came down to, it felt like the quarterback situation was better here,” Houshmandzadeh said. “I did what any receiver would do.”

Oops.

Little did Houshmandzadeh know Brett Favre(notes) would parachute in to Minnesota two weeks into training camp and deliver an MVP-caliber performance in the first half of the season, putting the Vikings (8-1) in contention for the top seed in the NFC.

It’s been a much more difficult year for the Seahawks (3-6), who have been beset by injuries and have lost six of their last eight games heading into Sunday’s meeting with the Vikings at the Metrodome.

“Obviously, it doesn’t look like I made the right decision,” Houshmandzadeh said. “But it’s too early. It’s been (nine) games.”

Houshmandzadeh had his best game as a Seahawk last week against Arizona, catching nine passes for 165 yards in a 31-20 loss. But he also has five games this season where he failed to top 50 yards receiving, production that has certainly been affected by Matt Hasselbeck(notes) missing two games with a rib injury.

So while Favre and the Vikings have a commanding three-game lead in the NFC North and are steamrolling toward the playoffs, the Seahawks are languishing in the NFC West. They need a major turnaround to avoid missing the postseason for a second straight year.

What if Favre had already been in purple when Houshmandzadeh was agonizing over the decision?

“Had he been there, who knows what could have happened?” he said. “What if … What if …”

The Vikings saw the 31-year-old former Cincinnati Bengal as the big, precise route runner they needed to complement speedster Bernard Berrian(notes) on the outside.

But when Houshmandzadeh turned down the Vikings to head out west to Seattle, he may have helped out Minnesota in the long run.

Had Houshmandzadeh signed a big contract to play here, the Vikings may not have selected Florida receiver Percy Harvin(notes) with their first-round pick in April. Harvin has been a revelation in his first nine games as a pro, leading the league in yards per kick return and emerging as one of Favre’s favorite big-play targets.

“Too bad he didn’t come here. I don’t know,” Vikings tight end Visanthe Shiancoe(notes) said with a wry grin. “All I know is we’ve got Percy, Bernard (Berrian) and Sidney (Rice) and those are the guys that we love and we need here. They’re making huge plays here.

“He made a decision. He decided what’s best for his career,” Shiancoe said. “We feel good over here. Hopefully he feels good over there.”

There have been times this season when Houshmandzadeh has waxed nostalgic about Carson Palmer(notes) and the Bengals, who are enjoying a breakthrough season in first place in the AFC North, and has complained about not getting enough passes thrown his way.

He said he’s feeling more like himself lately and wasn’t ready to say he made the wrong choice yet.

“As of now, it doesn’t look like I made the best decision,” Houshmandzadeh said. “But you can’t say it’s a bad decision. It’s been one year. I feel like I have many more years I’ll be playing. I feel good.”

Housh is not doing Seattle any favors with his choice of words? Also getting his comeuppance from Cincy - as that team is also doing well.

What Dynasty RBs do you covet?

Aside from the 'untouchables', most of whom have graduated to mere initials (ADP, MJD, CJ3...RR for RRice?), what RBs would you want on your (PPR) team, as guys who can turn into (mostly) bellcows or valued because they are utilized running and in the passing game?

Are Forte and Slaton buy low? You might have considered them in that elite group in the preseason.

Who else is up and coming that you believe will produce? D.Brown? McCoy? Beanie?

My thoughts...

I do think Forte and Slaton are buy lows. Their teams should find some complementary backs, but these guys should pick it up.

D. Brown...maybe he'll be eased in to the main role? Indy tried one back with Addai a couple years back and it didn't work out. I think whether it's Addai or someone else, we'll continue to see a true 2-back system in Indy. They probably will re-sign Addai in the offseason. Addai is excellent in pass coverage...he knows where to go and can standup a linebacker. I am concerned about Brown getting banged up a bit already, but we've seen what he can do with even limited carries.

McCoy: we're about to find out. I thought it might be next season before we would, but he's on display now.

Beanie: to me, the biggest long-term issues are his perceived toughness/injury issues (sat out 1/2 the bowl game vs. UT last year), he's on a pass-first team, and Warner might be in his last year or two. I was concerned he wasn't a pass catcher, but they have been throwing him a ball or 3 per game. I think he might be very good this year, and again, we're about to see if he can be the main back. Hightower is excellent in pass coverage. Like Addai, his value might be in his ability to keep his QB upright, and in being able to chip a defender then catch an 8 yard catch on 3rd and 6. I would assume both guys continue on ARI for a few years, as both are young.

Leon Washington: Hope his injury doesn't cost him a good team and good chance to play. If NYJ don't resign him, someone will.

I think RRice is easy to predict now. We saw glimpses last year and knew McGahee wasn't the answer. We had seen what Cam Cameron has done with other good RBs.

So who's the next guy where talent, coaching, and opportunity are lining up?

NFL Waiver Wire

I've asked this before I'm sure, but I don't think I got the answer.

Around this time of the year, when a player like a Chris Chambers go on waivers, teams make claims if they want him. The NFL would eventually reward the team with the worse record, that player. Now I assume it's based on strength of schedule somehow, now and in the off-season. BUT what happens after Week 1? Strength of schedule works then??? Minnesota beats Cleveland 34-20 in Week 1, Philly beats Carolina 38-10 and Seattle beats up St.Louis 28-0, so how would a waiver claim work then after ONE WEEK? St Louis would have first rights????? Carolina would have second dibs? Then Cleveland?????

Anyone know FOR SURE?

I talked to him two hours before the trade deadline, and he said he didn't want to put the trade through, he wanted us to accept it online.
Scott/LJ Workload Prediction thread

With Benson all but called OUT this weekend, it's pretty much a given that his job will be left to the backups this week. Prior to last week Scott has had 16 career NFL carries and got 13 more when Benson got dinged last week. LJ enters the picture on Monday and goes from "inactive" and forth on the depth chart to likely playing by Tuesday. Yesterday there were reports on a blog that "Recently signed RB Larry Johnson has received an ample workload in practice, according to the source, and could end up playing a significant role in this weekend’s game."

So how do you all see the workload breaking down this weekend?

Here are my thoughts...Last year when Benson was signed midweek and played in his 1st game he got 10 of the 23 carries vs. Dallas. LJ's skillset is very similar to Benson's in that they are both workhorses, physical backs that can punish the defense. LJ had almost as many carries (24) vs. Oak in his earlier matchup this year as Scott has had in his career (29). I think they lean on LJ heavily and he gets 18-20 carries vs. 7-10 for Scott.

If it wasn't for the DUI checkpoint at the end of my block, I'd go assist him out of town right now. Just watched the post game conference and it made me puke in my mouth. The guy doesn't care anymore. Heck, we didn't even get an "it is what it is" out of him. Why couldn't someone ask him why you pull possibly the leagues best RB out of the game in every critical situation??? You know, the guy whose ypc is about the same as your starting QB's quarterback rating.

Chris Spielman's Wife passes away

Columbus, Ohio - WSYX ABC 6 in Columbus Ohio is reporting that Stefanie Spielman, wife of former Bills Linebacker Chris Spielman, has died at the age of 42. The full story is below.

(WSYX6.com) Stefanie Spielman, 42, wife of Ohio State University football great Chris Spielman, has died. She is noted for her courageous struggle against breast cancer.
Stefanie is survived by her husband, Chris, and four children. A fund named for her -- The Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research -- has raised more than $6.5 million for breast cancer research, according to the Spielman Fund Web site.
Stefanie established Stefanie's Champions to recognize one of the most critical factors in surviving cancer: loving, unwavering support, the site says.
In early 1998, at age 30, Stefanie detected a sign of breast cancer when she felt a lump while performing a breast self-exam. She consulted her doctor and was then diagnosed with breast cancer.
She went on to undergo a mastectomy and six months of chemotherapy.
During this time, both she and her husband were in the midst of rising careers and raising their young children. Stefanie worked as a noted sports reporter for a TV station in Detroit and was in line for a reporting job right on the sidelines of OSU football games.
Her husband, Chris, played for OSU football coach Earle Bruce in 1984, being named a two-time All-American with the Buckeyes and a three-time All-Big Ten selection. Chris holds the title of Ohio State's all-time leader in solo tackles and ranks among the university's all-time leading tacklers overall with 546.
An Ohio State legend, Chris had been named an All-American linebacker while playing for the Buckeyes and winner of the Lombardi Trophy. He'd gone on to play pro football for the Detroit Lions, Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns.
After Stefanie's diagnosis, Chris chose to step away from the 1998 NFL season with Buffalo to tend to his wife. The Spielman's chose to tackle her cancer head on and together. The couple joined with the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute at Ohio State to launch The Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research.
The Spielmans went on to garner many local and statewide accolades for their esteemed work in promoting breast cancer awareness. A notable Buckeye football-related venture to raise money for breast cancer research was the Buckeye Cruise for Cancer.
Shortly before being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, Chris reflected on his wife's steadfast determination to beat cancer.
"She's doing everything she can, handling challenges with courage and dignity and honor," Chris said.
"Stephanie and I have always said that in strange way cancer has been a blessing because it gave us the opportunity to walk the walk as far as our faith, and as far as helping others."
In turn, Stefanie spoke of his dedication to her, their marriage and their fight against cancer.
"Through it all, Chris has demonstrated his strength in love, devotion, determination and in faith," she said.

Brad Childress receives contract extension offer

Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress said Thursday that he's reviewing a contract-extension offer from the team.

For more on the Minnesota Vikings, check out the latest from our bloggers.

» Blog Blitz: Vikings

Childress briefly spoke to reporters after practice, but he didn't say an agreement has been reached.

"I haven't signed anything yet. I haven't read anything yet," Childress said. "I have a document I have to look at. I'm going to go upstairs and read that document and see what it says. I just want to go up and look at the language."

Citing a league source, NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reported Wednesday that the multi-year deal should be signed and announced soon, likely before the playoffs begin in January.

Childress was hired by Vikings owner Zygi Wilf in 2006 and is the fourth year of a five-year, $10 million deal. The Vikings have improved each year under Childress' watch. They went 6-10 in 2006, 8-8 in 2007 and 10-6 with an NFC North title last season.

With quarterback Brett Favre at the helm, the Vikings are 8-1 this season and competing with the undefeated New Orleans Saints for the NFC's top playoff seed.

"I am grateful for the opportunity I was given," Childress said. "I've got a good group of guys in the locker room, which I've said over and over. I've got a great ownership group. Not only am I grateful for them, they've been good owners from a standpoint of empowering us with players. They listen. There's a good dialogue."

The Wilfs have opened their wallets to sign big-money players such as defensive end Jared Allen, guard Steve Hutchinson and wide receiver Bernard Berrian. They also have poured money into upgrading the team's headquarters in Eden Prairie and steadfastly supported Childress even when he was the subject of criticism by fans early in his tenure.

"They have to buy into the vision of how you see the Minnesota Vikings going forward, and we've been good enough to be able to fulfill part of that vision," Childress said.
