I realize that Goodfellas will win this poll, but I want to see how much respect Casino gets. The more years that go by, Casino gets closer and closer to Goodfellas in my mind. For some reason, Casino seems to get short-changed when discussing all-time great movies. A lot of people were turned off by the extreme violence, I believe.

Goodfellas started out like a house of fire, but the ending didn't seem to pack the same punch.

Casino really was an excellent production, start to finish. Sharon Stone played pathetic flawlessly.

Netflix "Watch Instantly" gems: FBGs recommended

Let's make a list for instant-gratification movie fans. Try to limit recommendations to those you don't have to order and wait a couple days for them to arrive. (I know, Netflix switches these around once in a while, but let's stick with ones we ouselves have "watched instantly".)

My recommendation would be a very cool English series called "Wire In the Blood". It's about a nerdy psychology professor who profiles serial killers and helps the police catch them. I know - it sounds like a familiar setup - but this series is actually very well done, it is more graphic than what you tend to see on American TV, and the acting is terrific. I've watched all six seasons on my computer (via Netflix) and the only clunker in the bunch was one movie done separately from the series where the main character went to America to testify in a Texas trial. The rest of them were very well done.

Maybe the science wasn't settled

"Global warming appears to have stalled," reports Der Spiegel. "Climatologists are puzzled as to why average global temperatures have stopped rising over the last 10 years":

At least the weather in Copenhagen is likely to be cooperating. The Danish Meteorological Institute predicts that temperatures in December, when the city will host the United Nations Climate Change Conference, will be one degree above the long-term average.

Otherwise, however, not much is happening with global warming at the moment. The Earth's average temperatures have stopped climbing since the beginning of the millennium, and it even looks as though global warming could come to a standstill this year. . . .

As someone once said: "The most famous phrase in science is: 'Scientists used to think..., but we now know that...'"

From the WSJ

"Even though the temperature standstill probably has no effect on the long-term warming trend", it does raise doubts about the predictive value of climate models, and it is also a political issue. For months, climate change skeptics have been gloating over the findings on their Internet forums. This has prompted many a climatologist to treat the temperature data in public with a sense of shame, thereby damaging their own credibility.

"It cannot be denied that this is one of the hottest issues in the scientific community," says Jochem Marotzke, director of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg. "We don't really know why this stagnation is taking place at this point."

Why in the world should one take seriously the claim that "the temperature standstill probably has no effect on the long-term warming trend"? That is presumably no more than a prediction made by the same people whose predictions are currently not panning out. This quote is telling:

"The planet's temperature curve rose sharply for almost 30 years, as global temperatures increased by an average of 0.7 degrees Celsius (1.25 degrees Fahrenheit) from the 1970s to the late 1990s. "At present, however, the warming is taking a break," confirms meteorologist Mojib Latif of the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences in the northern German city of Kiel. Latif, one of Germany's best-known climatologists, says that the temperature curve has reached a plateau. "There can be no argument about that," he says. "We have to face that fact."

If global warming is really the horror it has been made out to be, its absence ought to be a gift to be celebrated, not a "fact" that "we have to face." But global warmism isn't a scientific theory anymore; it is an ideology in which many people, including those who are supposed to be doing science, have invested their prestige and money.

While I'd be tempted by Obama as the charismatic frontman, I'm afraid he'd go all Timberlake on me and fly solo just when we were getting big. I think I'd choose Bubba as my frontman. Would make the ladies swoon, could bring a crowd in the door, and would bring the house down when he stopped busting moves mid-set to blast a sax solo.

My bad boy would be Nixon, the dark, mysterious one they love to hate.

Jimmy Carter would be my shy, bookish, homespun guy who appealed to the nerd chicks.

I could wheel FDR out as a token minority. I got this idea from watching Glee.

And the talentless but hunky one who was just there for his raw sex appeal and marketability: William Howard Taft. Duh.

Whatcha got?
