Pittsburgh Steelers OL Reshuffle

http://www.steelers.com/news/article-1/Colon-making-the-switch-to-guard/f072ca01-4774-45a3-b30f-cda6226d2883

Current Pittsburgh Steelers RT Willie Colon told steelers.com he is
being moved to Left Guard which opens up a move of Marcus Gilbert to
right tackle and Mike Adams to start at left tackle.

I like Mike Adams at left tackle and think with Decastro, this really upgrades the offensive line. Adams can hold his own against NFL defensive ends.

but beware, with all this positional swapping the cohesion will suck. the only player holding the same position from last year is the center Pouncey. Expect turbulence in the short term as these guys play themselves together and the rookie wall could hit Adams or Decastro at any time. They've expended a big effort to get drafted and no real offseason. Football players require an offseason and the rookie wall is real.

I can preview from my soon to be published article that the PIT OL are ranked in the teens, somewhere in the middle of my OL rankings.

The long term trend is positive, especially if Adams proves himself in the summer.

Cosell Talks: 2012 NFL Draft Post-Mortem 2

Cosell Talks: 2012 NFL Draft Post-Mortem 2

by Greg Cosell

Quote

I had the opportunity last weekend to attend the Philadelphia Eagles’ rookie minicamp. It’s always enjoyable to see college players react to NFL coaching for the first time. If you’re a defensive lineman, I can guarantee you’ve never seen a coach quite like Jim Washburn, the old-school defensive line mentor who’s been dispensing his particular brand of knowledge for over 30 years. Washburn is one of the best in the business, and I love seeing his passion and attention to the smallest of details.

Washburn has two rookies to mold in 2012: Fletcher Cox, whom the Eagles moved up to take with the 12th overall pick, and Vinny Curry, a late second-rounder many teams had rated as a first-round talent. Cox and Curry were part of an Eagles draft that was one of the best in the NFL. There’s only one way to evaluate a team’s draft immediately after it happens, before the draftees have taken a snap on Sunday: Heading into the draft, how did you project each player’s transition to the NFL? Based on my film study, the Eagles’ brain trust (led by Howie Roseman and Andy Reid) did an outstanding job.

Cox was the top defensive linemen in this draft class. He was primarily a tackle at Mississippi State, but what fascinated me most was his play at end. He aligned outside on significant snaps in each game I evaluated, and showed the pass-rush ability of a fine defensive end with his initial burst and overall quickness. Cox is a Washburn kind of player: position versatile with the skill set to become an outstanding pass rusher.

Curry played both defensive end positions at Marshall. What stood out on tape, and it’s not a characteristic you often see in college pass rushers, was his quick, active and violent hands. That attribute reminded me of San Francisco 49ers first-rounder Aldon Smith when he came out of Missouri last year, and we all know the success Smith had as a sub-package rusher with 14 sacks. Curry could well be a factor early in Washburn’s “Wide 9″ scheme, in which he has more space to build up speed and velocity.

Mychal Kendricks and Brandon Boykin were the Eagles’ other two defensive selections in the 2012 draft. I believe both will transition very well to the NFL. Kendricks is a movement player — a speed and range linebacker with an explosive element to his game. In today’s NFL, with the emphasis on the passing game and the increased speed and athleticism of tight ends, those traits have become magnified. In addition, Kendricks was utilized as a blitzer at Cal, predominantly from the outside. There’s no question he can do that at the NFL level.

Boykin played in the slot in Georgia’s nickel package. The 2011 Eagles’ struggles at slot corner were well documented. As I’ve written before, given the prevalence of three-receiver personnel packages, slot corner is now a defined position that demands coverage ability, run support and blitzing. Boykin, despite his 182-pound frame, performed each of those tasks well at Georgia. Based on my evaluation, he was the No. 2 slot corner in this draft, a notch below Alabama’s DeQuan Menzie.

The AFC team whose draft caught my attention was the Cincinnati Bengals. Let’s start with their second pick of the first round: Kevin Zeitler, the offensive guard from Wisconsin. I don’t know how the Bengals felt about the Zeitler/David DeCastro comparison, and we’ll likely never know because DeCastro had already been selected by the Steelers, but I felt that Zeitler was the more athletic and more complete guard prospect. Zeitler was very efficient in the zone-run game with his quick feet and sustained movement. He’s an excellent fit for the Bengals.

The two wide receivers Cincinnati selected, Rutgers’ Mohamed Sanu in the third round and Cal’s Marvin Jones in the fifth, also possess NFL attributes. The Sanu pick was particularly intriguing to me. Based on my tape study, I projected him as a slot receiver. In fact, I saw similar physical attributes to the New Orleans Saints’ Marques Colston: good size, fluid movement, excellent hands and the ability to work effectively in traffic in the middle of the field. But don’t lose sight of Jones. He will compete with Sanu for the starting job opposite Green. Jones had the widest catching radius of any receiver in this draft class. His ability to snatch balls outside his body frame is outstanding.

Keep this in mind: The Bengals feature A.J. Green, one of the most vertically explosive receivers in the NFL. Green tilts coverage, often commanding the attention of multiple defenders because of his game-breaking skills. And don’t forget Jermaine Gresham, a very talented tight end with the ability to align anywhere in the formation, including split outside the numbers. Green and Gresham impact the other wideout in base personnel packages. Sanu and/or Jones will likely encounter significant snaps of single coverage.

One other Bengals pick interested me: safety George Iloka from Boise State. I know safety is not a highly valued position in the NFL, unless a player is deemed special. Yet I was surprised Iloka was still available at pick 167. There are not many safeties who are 6-foot-3 1/2, 225 pounds with the speed and movement skills of Iloka. He also aligned on the outside at corner in Boise State’s final three games of the season due to injury and was not overmatched athletically. I watched many games, so I understand the concerns — one of which was a lack of splash plays — and I was told that was a main reason why he fell in the draft. But with his rare size, long arms, good range and closing speed, plus the fact the Bengals lack quality at the safety position, Iloka will get an opportunity. And I would not be surprised if he emerged as a significant contributor in Mike Zimmer’s defense.

The Bengals and Eagles — two teams who drafted players that I believe will transition effectively to the NFL. And that’s the entire point of the draft, right?

Full-Time Clock-Management Coach?

I've been a subscriber for years, and a lurker in the forums as well, but this is my first topic started. Being a bleed-green Eagles fan from a very young age growing up in Philly, this topic hits home with me, and I've never heard it seriously discussed by anyone else. My brother and I both had this idea independently, so I must think there are others out there who feel the same.

How much sense would it make to hire a full-time coach or assistant whose only job was clock management? This would probably depend on what team we are talking about, but for the Eagles, Andy Reid is probably the worst clock-management coach there is. It could be argued (and has been, in the Philly Threads over the years) that anywhere from 2 to 4 games per year additional could have been won had it not been for back clock management by the Eagles. Even in the Superbowl against the Pats, what the hell was that last two minutes of the game? (could be blamed on McNabb, and has, but could it have been different with someone minding only the clock?)

I'm just throwing this out there to start some dialogue and see if it's a totally looney idea or has this even been considered for real at the professional level?

Under pressure:

Under pressure: Thirteen facing the strongest headwinds for 2012

By Clark Judge | CBSSports.com Senior NFL Columnist

Quote

If there's pressure these days it's on someone like LeBron James or Henrk Lundqvist, not on anyone lining up for snaps in the NFL.

But wait a couple of months. It will be, and it'll start squeezing people like Philadelphia coach Andy Reid or San Diego's Norv Turner, both of whom are under orders to reach the playoffs.

My concern here is not with Reid, Turner or any NFL head coach. It's with everyone else who's stressed to succeed and to succeed immediately. I know it's early, but let's talk about 13 -- an unlucky 13 -- in the line of fire, and let's start here:

1. Whoever coaches the New Orleans Saints: OK, so the expectations are low. The Saints still have the same Us-Against-The-World mentality that drove New England in 2007, and look what happened there. Plus, the next Super Bowl is in New Orleans, and no host city in Super Bowl history has had its team there. The Saints have the talent to make it. But do they have the right coach? We're about to find out. Make it pressure galore on whoever succeeds Sean Payton ... or on Joe Vitt (he coaches for 10 games after serving a six-game suspension) ... to put the Saints in a position where nobody's been before.

2. Robert Griffin III, quarterback, Washington: The learning curve is steeper for this rookie because of the blockbuster trade that brought him to the Redskins. The club paid a fortune because it believes he's its franchise quarterback for the next 10 years, and I love organizations that have convictions about people -- so long as they're right. The expectation is that Griffin makes a bad club good overnight, and that may be a reach. More exciting? Yes. Better? Probably. But Washington plays in the NFC East where there are three teams more talented than the Redskins. Plus, look around Griffin. The supporting cast is not exactly stellar. Washington mortgaged its future for RG3 because it believes he is the future, and that means he can't just be good. He must be great.

3. Chris Johnson, running back, Tennessee: The Titans paid him as if he were the best running back in the business which, until last season, he might have been. But then 2011 showed up, and Johnson didn't. The back who once eclipsed 2,000 yards eclipsed 100 just once in his first eight starts and, in four of those games, couldn't produce more than 34. He wound up over 1,000 ... but barely ... and had a career-low average of 4.0 yards per carry. Worse, in five of his 16 games he failed to run for more than 24 yards. Johnson was supposed to carry this offense as he had in the past, but he didn't. So the question remains: Which Chris Johnson shows up this season? Or, better yet, does Chris Johnson show up? The Titans were 9-7 with him MIA most of the season. Imagine what happens if he's himself again.

4. Tony Sparano, offensive coordinator, N.Y. Jets: He's the poor guy who decides how and when to play Tim Tebow. People talk about the pressure on quarterback Mark Sanchez, but, trust me, there's more on the guy who decides how many snaps to take away from Sanchez and give Tebow. Sparano has the right temperament, and he worked the Wildcat to perfection in 2008 when, as head coach of the Miami Dolphins, he and offensive coordinator Dan Henning sprung their new toy on unsuspecting opponents and rode it to a division title. Having Tebow means having a weapon opponents must defend, and not knowing how or when he will be used is a problem for them. But it's a problem for Sparano, too, who must balance his two quarterbacks in a market that will not tolerate failure and on a club with a fragile psyche.

5. Kevin Kolb, quarterback, Arizona: The Cards invested heavily in him last summer because he solved a hole at quarterback. Only one year later, he hasn't solved anything ... not yet he hasn't. Instead, he's in a battle with John Skelton for the starting job. But that's not the worst of it. The Cards pulled out of the Peyton Manning Sweepstakes because they had to make a decision on Kolb and a $7 million roster bonus he was due ... and they decided to pick it up. That means somebody there believes in him, and it's time Kolb validates that support. I don't expect him to be Peyton Manning, but I do expect him to be better than he was last season. The team's future could depend on it.

6. Courtney Upshaw, linebacker, Baltimore: Someone has to take the place of Terrell Suggs, the Ravens' best pass rusher and one of the game's top impact players, and Upshaw pulled the short straw. It's tough enough to make it in the NFL as a rookie, but to step in for the Defensive Player of the Year? Good luck, Courtney. When Suggs stepped out of the lineup he took 14 sacks, seven forced fumbles and invaluable experience with him. I don't know, it may take two or three players to replace him, and the clock is ticking. Ray Lewis is 37, Ed Reed turns 34 this season and both are near the ends of their careers. Somebody must do heavy lifting in Suggs' absence, and Upshaw's the first one in line. He thought there was pressure when he sat in the Green Room during last month's draft, waiting to hear his name called. He was wrong.

7. Brandon Weeden, quarterback, Cleveland: The Browns used the 22nd pick on the guy when they could've found another offensive weapon for Colt McCoy, and that should tell you something: Uh-huh, it says they think he's an upgrade over what they have. Normally, you might expect Cleveland to be patient with a rookie quarterback, but there's nothing normal about Weeden, who turns 29 this season and is older than Aaron Rodgers. That means you can forget about developing him. It also means he must play and play now. Cleveland took heat for a pick that seemed like a panic move after wide receiver Kendall Wright dropped off the board. So it's up to Weeden to demonstrate the Browns knew what they were doing, and while that could take time ... time is something that is in short supply for him and the Browns.

8. Todd Haley, offensive coordinator, Pittsburgh: Steps in for Bruce Arians, which means he steps between Arians and his prized pupil, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Arians and Big Ben were close and thrived in a system that took the Steelers to two Super Bowl appearances in three years. Apparently, though, someone must have thought the Steelers threw too much or were too wide-open or some such nonsense. So Arians left, Haley arrived and Roethlisberger is trying to figure out what's different. "I get a little confused at times," he said on a Rich Eisen Podcast, "because I know so much has been made about us quote-unquote throwing the ball too much, or we're going back to Steeler football and running the ball more. But in these meetings I've had with coach Haley, he's all about the no-huddle, using our wide-receiver weapons and throwing the ball and stuff like that. So I'm still confused. I'm not sure what's going to happen yet." I am. Haley's offense will be dissected the moment these guys hit the field, and heaven help him if speed bumps come early.

9. Calvin Johnson, wide receiver, Detroit: He's the best wide receiver in the game. He's also the cover guy for Madden NFL 13. Curses.

10. Matt Schaub, quarterback, Houston: There's an expectation in some places that Houston ... yes, Houston ... may be the team to beat in the AFC because, well, you know, look what it did without Schaub last season. So the Texans not only are the team to beat in the AFC South; they may be the team to beat in the AFC, period. Granted, they lost star linebacker Mario Williams to Buffalo, but they won without him last year, too. So it's all in front of Houston ... or some think so, anyway ... with Schaub the catalyst to make a good team an elite one. Me? I'm not so sure. Schaub hasn't won anything in his career, and the bar was just raised -- with the playoffs no longer enough to satisfy the Texans' fan base. Now, it wants a deep playoff run, and it figures Houston would've made one a year ago if Schaub had only been OK. Well, now he is.

11. Michael Vick, quarterback, Philadelphia: After last season's disappointing 8-8 finish, Reid is under orders to get to the playoffs or else. OK, fine. But he doesn't get there without the help of his quarterback, and the question is: Which Michael Vick will it be this season? The guy who committed way too mistakes the first nine games of 2011 or the guy who couldn't lose the last four? There are people in and around Philadelphia who believe Vick poses a problem for the Eagles; that they can't take the next step without him avoiding injuries or avoiding critical mistakes. I don't know, the Michael Vick of 2010 was damned good, and the Michael Vick the last four games of 2011 was consistent and efficient. One reason the Eagles cratered last season was that they blew five fourth-quarter leads. But another was that they committed a zillion turnovers -- more than anyone but Tampa Bay, which lost its last 10 starts. The cleanup starts with Vick ... or else.

12. Matt Ryan, quarterback, Atlanta: Sooner or later, he absolutely, positively must win a playoff game, and here's hoping it's sooner. He's 0-3 in his career, and until or unless he breaks through he can't be considered one of the game's top quarterbacks. The New York Rangers' John Tortorella had it right the other night when he said your legacy is measured by your performance in the playoffs. All I know about Ryan's performance in the playoffs is that in four seasons as a starter he has one less victory than Tim Tebow does in one.

13. Mark Sanchez, quarterback, New York Jets: We can't have a pressure cooker without dropping this name in it. At least, that's the feeling in and around New York, where skeptical fans wonder what happens when Sanchez throws three interceptions or loses a game he shouldn't. I'll tell you what: The heat will be on coach Rex Ryan and Sparano to stand by their man, that's what. Yeah, Sanchez just took on another load, but it's his coaches who bear this burden because they're the ones who must make everything work. Already, the Jets are saying Sanchez needs to make better decisions, so maybe this whole Tim Tebow Thing is about how Sanchez responds to competition -- though, of course, nobody is calling it that. It took Philip Rivers to bring out the best in Drew Brees in his fourth season, so maybe, just maybe, the Jets make Sanchez compete at the position for the first time in his NFL career to push him forward. He responded well to the pressure of past playoffs. So why not surround him with pressure every day at practice and see what happens? I think the Jets just did.

Ricky Williams speaks out about concussions on DLHQ

Hey everyone, I thought this was an interesting article. Not sure what to make of Williams' remarks but I do feel it has some validity. Ricky is talking about things that cannot be explained by science. Actually what Ricky is asking folks to do is think outside of just medical science...it's interesting because when sickness sets in and I'll target in on cancer since it has had an impact on almost everyone I know including myself.

One of the big things in treating cancer patients is their state of mind. I'm not gonna go too deep on the OP into this but there are people who feel they can almost cure themselves by not listening to modern medicine and going thru a more holistic approach and certainly Ricky Williams is in that camp.

The concussion topic has been one that has a lot of people concerned, angry, and yes fearful of football and its future. I'm as guilty as anyone for rushing to judgement and perhaps not always showing my best when it comes to these issues and all of you.

I believe most will assume Ricky is crazy and dismiss him but I found his POV different as usual and also needed even though i don't agree with everything he says.

Yahoo Sports

Sometimes, the best way to deal with a problem is to pretend that it doesn't exist. At least, that's the impression put across by former NFL running back Ricky Williams when he discussed the recent concern about concussions in football with ESPN's Dan Le Batard. Williams, who played for the New Orleans Saints, Miami Dolphins and Baltimore Ravens during an 11-year career in which he gained over 10,000 rushing yards, retired in February. And when it comes to the possible effects of the game as he enters a new phase of his life ... well, Williams can't really be bothered.

"I have no idea, and I'm not a really big fan of the way the NFL is handling concussions," Williams said on Tuesday. "Maybe I'm stupid or whatever, but if I got a concussion, and I could see straight and I could carry a football, I'm not telling anybody ... From what I've seen, [the NFL is] all about prevention -- but can you prevent a concussion? I mean, you can definitely have safer helmets, and I had what I think was the safest helmet when I played, and I think you can definitely pay more attention. But ultimately, it's about the players. And I think all this attention given to prevention -- it seems like they haven't done anything, because they don't believe they can actually treat a concussion."

When Le Batard said that he didn't understand Williams' statement (put us in that camp as well), Williams elaborated.

"Most of the research around concussions is to find that 100 percent of football players have brain trauma. Well -- I don't want someone to tell me that, right? I don't want someone to tell me that, because if it's a 'doctor' [Williams used air quotes when he said the word 'doctor'], I don't buy it."

The now incredulous Le Batard asked Williams to clarify his stance -- did he believe that there is not a link between football and concussions?

"I don't buy it. I'm only speaking from my personal experience, because I haven't allowed myself to buy it, and I haven't been affected. Yes, I'm aware that football is a rough sport, but instead of saying, 'Oh -- I'm doomed to brain trauma,' I said, 'What can I do about it?' And I just started taking care of my body. I found people, places and things that really helped me -- again, I don't know what's going to happen to me in 10 years, but I look at the other things I've learned about, and the way I see the world.

"And to me, it's like -- OK, yes. If we're going to spend six months brutalizing our bodies, I said, 'That makes sense. I'm going to spend six months taking care of my body.' I started to equip myself with tools. I started practicing yoga, and I started learning some hands-on healing stuff. I found really good chiropractors and massage therapists, and I found that I was able to peel off layers of trauma on my body. I actually move better now than I did [when I played]."

When asked about the science of brain trauma, Williams passed it off. "Science is the deity, but should it be?"

I'm not about to tell Ricky Williams how to deal with the effects of football -- he's certainly taken many more violent hits than I have, and he appears to be none the worse for wear. I'm also in the camp that believes in the positive effects of a holistic approach. The "mind over matter" stuff works to a degree, and maybe Williams is just on a higher plane with it. And if it allows him to bypass the sometimes horrific results that happen when you bang your helmeted head into another helmeted head ... well, good for him.

I just hope he isn't on the outside looking in from a medical perspective when he's 44 years old instead of the 34 he is now.

That's really a lot to think about. We see it every year: This guys is a Wes Welker clone, this guy approaches the game like Tom Brady, etc, etc.

And then we get on the boards and we echo that, ad naseum.

But when you think about that, the guys we are trying to find the "next" one like are often guys that we (nor the NFL) was looking for when THEY arrived.

So...what does that say about how much stock to put into measureables and similarities when the guys that are so successful were discounted for those same attributes when they came to the league?

How much would a perfect backup QB be worth?

How much would it be worth to a team with an elite quarterback to get a replica of their quarterback as their backup?

For example, imagine if the Patriots had the opportunity to sign a Tom Brady clone, who would be just like Brady, but would only play if the actual Brady was out with an injury. How much should they be willing to pay the Brady clone to be their backup for this season? He'd be a perfect insurance policy - if Brady goes out with an injury (like in 2008) then the offense wouldn't lose a thing and the clone would add a ton of value to the team. But if Brady stays healthy (like in 2009-2011) then the clone wouldn't add anything; he'd just be an expensive clipboard-holder. So how much should they be willing to pay him for a year?

Or, make it a Rodgers clone as the Packers' backup, or a Brees clone as the Saints' backup.

For comparison, Tom Brady signed a 4-year $72 million contract in 2010 (worth $18M/year), and Brees is expected to make $16.4 million this year on the franchise tag.

How much can Ray Lewis possibly have left?

This is a crazy run for a LB. Does he have anything left in the tank, or is he living completely on reputation?

Quote

Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis turns 37 today, which could be the magic number for him. In April 2011, Lewis hinted at a target date for his retirement when he told the NFL Network, "I can’t see myself playing football past 37.”

Lewis made it clear after Baltimore's AFC Championship Game loss that he was returning in 2012, but there has to be questions about whether he will play beyond this year. At some point, Lewis is going to have to say goodbye to football, although there haven't been any recent indicators he will be calling it quits anytime soon. His contract runs through 2015, and the Ravens showed confidence in Lewis when they once again didn't draft his eventual replacement in April.

Lewis started off strong last season and was among the NFL's top inside linebackers in the first half of the 2011. Then, after missing four games with a toe injury, he seemed to wear down toward the end of the year. During the playoffs, Lewis didn't sound close to retiring when asked about his future.

"Football is too fun for me, man," Lewis said in January. "Whenever God says time is enough, then it's enough. But when you're having the fun that I'm having, and you're playing at the level I'm playing at, do it until you can't do it no more."

Lewis has been one of the league's top Iron Men. His 222 games played is second-most among active players, ranking only behind a kicker (Jason Hanson). He is the longest-tenured Raven on the roster by six seasons (safety Ed Reed is second).

No other great middle linebacker has played as along as Lewis. Mike Singletary retired after 12 seasons with the Chicago Bears before his play declined. The Pittsburgh Steelers' Jack Lambert walked away after 11 years because of a severe toe injury. And the Bears' Dick Butkus stopped after nine seasons because of knee injuries.

Lewis is now entering his 17th season in the NFL. And, after turning 37 today, you have to wonder whether this will be his last.

Quote

Former NFL scout Daniel Jeremiah, who spent a combined eight seasons with three NFL clubs, has joined the NFL Media team, it was announced today.

Jeremiah will be a regular contributor on NFL.com and NFL Mobile, offering an Xs-and-Os look at players, teams and trends, and will play a key role in the site's NFL Draft coverage. In addition, he will offer analysis on NFL Network. Jeremiah enjoys a wide Twitter following (@MoveTheSticks) among NFL media members.

In his first NFL.com column, Jeremiah ranks starting quarterbacks by division -- noting a shift over the past five years. "Things have definitely changed since 2007," he writes. "The balance of power at the QB position has clearly switched to the NFC."

Jeremiah joins NFL Media after serving for two years as the Philadelphia Eagles' college area scout for the West. Previously, he was a national scout for the Cleveland Browns and a west coast area scout for the Baltimore Ravens.

Prior to working in the NFL, Jeremiah was a production assistant for ESPN's Sunday Night Football telecasts.

Jeremiah graduated in 2000 from Appalachian State, where he started at quarterback for three seasons. He resides in Murrieta, Calif., with his wife and four children.

Now that I've aquired Ryan in both of my dynasty leagues, I'm going to express my excitement for his projections going foward. I keep seeing him around 8-12 in the QB rankings. Even in dynasty rankings. At the worst, I see him as a top 6 QB going foward with a sharp dropoff after him. Rodgers, Newton, and Stafford are there in dynasty/redraft and Brady/Brees in redraft. I don't think I'd trade Ryan for anyone other than Stafford or Rodgers in dynasty. Why?
Check out his stats weeks 9-16 last year. He was the 6th best QB in that time span. Week 17, he was rested. Julio Jones was just starting to come in his own. He and Roddy White are the best 1-2 punch in the NFL. Turner isn't going to be getting 350 carries anytime soon. The RBs behind him are made for the passing game. This ATL passing game is going become elite this season. ATL knows that they are going to have to keep up with the GB/NY/DAL passing units. Look out. They didn't give up 3 drafts for Julio Jones for nothing.

2012 Preseason Injury Report thread

Hey Y'all,

It's that time of year again - the rookies are in or approaching mini-camps, and the veterans are starting to prepare for OTAs. That means that I'm working on my comprehensive preseason injury report for the offensive skill positions (QB, RB, WR, TE, PK). To date, I've covered Arizona, Atlanta, Carolina, Chicago, Baltimore, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Green Bay, Houston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Kansas City, Miami, Minnesota, New England and New Orleans.

If anyone sees an injury situation I have omitted on those 20 teams, or if there is a more recent update on an injury than the one I've listed, please post in this thread and give me a link to your information so I can add it to the document.

Thanks to Samuel L. Bronkowitz for his note on Andrew Quarless.

Thanks Sharks!

Mark Wimer

P.S. I'll spruce up the report with bolds and other touches after I've done all 32 teams. Right now, I'm just interested in getting the complete information on each player who is injured/rehabbing as of mid-May for all 32 teams down in the report.

*****************

QB

ARI: Cardinals' QB Kevin Kolb (concussion) said Monday, April 16, that it was more than three weeks after the season when he felt normal again after battling a concussion. 'To be honest with you, when I first went home it was still pretty severe,' Kolb said. 'It kind of worried me because I figured once I got away from the game it would clear up pretty fast. But it didn't and I stayed in contact with our guys here. Within three or four days after that three-week period it was fine. I was glad to be feeling back to normal.' From a fantasy perspective, a history of concussions (such as Kolb has in his background) is worrisome as the league is being very careful with treating concussions, holding players out for weeks at a time - that's doubly true with players who have a prior history of concussions. John Skelton played well in relief of Kolb last season and the team has stated that the two players are in a competition for the starting QB job this season.

ARI: Cardinals' QB John Skelton suffered from swelling in his knee late last season due to a bursal sac problem - he had to have fluid drained before the season finale against Seattle and fainted during the procedure. However, no surgery was necessary to address the injury - doctors advised Skelton that rest would cure the condition.

CHI: Bears' QB Jay Cutler was placed on IR Tuesday, December 27th due to a thumb injury that required surgery to place pins in his broken thumb (the surgery happened during the last week of November). As of Thursday, February 23rd head coach Lovie Smith said that Cutlers' thumb was 'fine'. There aren't any complications from the injury expected for 2012.

CLE: Browns' QB Colt McCoy was unable to play in the final three games of the 2011 season due to after-effects from a concussion. On February ninth, GM Mike Holmgren indicated that McCoy had 'no residual effects' from the concussion. However, From a fantasy perspective, a history of concussions is worrisome as the league is being very careful with treating concussions, holding players out for weeks at a time. Also, the team was reportedly upset with how Brad McCoy (Colt's dad) criticized the team's handling of Colt's concussion. The team drafted Brandon Weeden, a 28-year old rookie, with the 22nd pick of the 2012 draft, and the Browns have indicated that McCoy and Weeden will compete for the #1 job on the team during training camp.

DAL: Cowboys' QB Tony Romo suffered from a hand injury at the end of the 2011 season, but he has since recovered from the problem and looks good to go for 2012.

DEN: Broncos' QB Peyton Manning is reportedly healthy and ready to start under center for the Broncos after missing all of he 2011 season due to a series of neck problems/four surgical procedures on the neck. Manning was one of the first players to arrive for voluntary workouts Monday, April 16th, 2011. 'I've seen that firsthand over the course of my career - that offseason work makes a big difference come fall,' Manning said. 'You can't just show up in September and expect to be successful, expect to win games. And so this offseason work is critical.' Bronco WR Eric Decker commented on Manning's throws during the workouts on April 16th, saying: 'The guy's still throwing the ball a long time, throwing it great, hitting you in the right spot,' Decker said. 'He's such a perfectionist. If he hits you in the belly button, he gets mad at himself for not hitting you in the chest. It's unbelievable to be around a guy who has those standards for himself.'

HOU: Texans' QB Matt Schaub reported that his rehab from a broken foot/Lisfranc injury (corrective surgery performed Wednesday, November 30th, 2011) was progressing well as of Monday, April 16th. There was a surgical procedure at the beginning of April to remove 'hardware' out of his foot - 'We have a lot of time to get ready and there's no doubt I'll be ready,' Schaub said. Texans' head coach Gary Kubiak commented about Schaub's participation in OTAs this year on May eighth, 2012: 'We're going to put the reins on him, so to speak. He will do drill work, could throw some 7-on-7, but he will not be put in a team environment where he might get tripped up or something like that happens. He's ready to go. It's us being cautious with him right now.'

JAX: Jaguars' QB Blaine Gabbert revealed on April second, 2012 that he played 'nearly all' of his rookie season with a broken toe. The pain from the injury may have contributed to his miserable 2011 showing, but there was more wrong in Jacksonville than just Gabbert's broken toe.

JAX: Jaguars' QB Chad Henne landed on IR Thursday, October sixth (placed there by his old team, Miami) due to a separated shoulder that required surgical repair. He was signed by the Jaguars to a two-year contract on Wednesday, March 14th, 2012. He has since stated that he expects to compete for the starting job in Jacksonville (Sunday, April 15th), even though the Jaguars' coaching staff is on record saying that Gabbert is the clear-cut #1 entering preseason.

KC: Chiefs' QB Matt Cassel broke his hand in November, 2011 and was placed on IR Monday, November 21st after corrective surgery was performed on Wednesday, November 16th. As of Friday, February 24th Cassel was reportedly throwing the football well. General Manager Scott Pioli said on February 24th that 'He was throwing right as the season ended. I don't know if he's 100 percent because I haven't seen him, but he's throwing well.'

MIA: Dolphins' QB David Garrard had back surgery in October 2011 to fix a herniated disk. On February 15th, 2012 Garrard indicated that he expected to be 'fully healed' from his back surgery by early April, 2012. He was signed by Miami on Monday, March 19th and the team has declared their QB contest is 'open', meaning Matt Moore, Garrard or rookie Ryan Tannehill could win the job in training camp.

MIN: Vikings' QB Christian Ponder was slowed during December 2011 due to a hip pointer, and he eventually missed the season finale as a result of the injury. However, he was declared fully healed as of March fourth, 2012, and is expected to fully participate in OTAs and training camp.

NE: Patriots' QB Tom Brady aggravated a pre-existing left shoulder sprain during the third quarter of the Super Bowl on February fifth, 2012. He did finish the game, and the injury isn't expected to have lingering effects into the 2012 preseason.

RB

ARI: Cardinals' RB Beanie Wells (knee) described his arthroscopic right knee surgery Tuesday, January 24th, 'as just a scope,' and he said the procedure went as expected. He was at the team's facilities Friday, January 27th, to start the rehab process. Wells should be able to participate in offseason work if his rehab goes as planned.

ARI: Cardinals'second-year RB Ryan Williams is already running and cutting on his surgically repaired knee according to reports on May seventh, 2012. Williams seems to be ahead of schedule in his rehab and said, "I am running and cutting and doing things I didn't think I'd be doing this early. I'm not worried about it." Williams tore his patella tendon and sustained meniscus cartilage damage on August 19th, 2011, and was placed on IR for the 2011 season.

ATL: Falcons RB Jason Snelling underwent surgery to wire his broken jaw Monday, January ninth, 2012. 'Well I just got back from the Dr. and it looks like I will be eating jello and apple sauce next couple weeks,' Snelling said. Atlanta resigned Snelling to a new contract on Thursday, March eighth, 2012 - it appears that the jaw is not an issue heading into 2012.

BUF: Bills' RB Fred Jackson said on Monday, April 23rd 2012 that he is completely healthy from the broken leg he suffered last season. He said he has been working out this offseason and has been medically cleared to practice. On May seventh, 2012 he was awarded a contract extension - it appears the team is not concerned about the leg injury. C.J. Spiller played well in relief of Jackson, however, and the team has openly talked about a 50-50 workshare arrangement between the two backs for 2012.

CHI: Bears' RB Matt Forte suffered a knee injury at the end of the 2011 season, but was recovered enough to be medically cleared to play in the 2012 Pro Bowl (cleared on January 19th, 2012). However, his contract situation is becoming ugly and he may be a holdout from OTA's and training camp this season.

CLE: Browns' rookie RB Trent Richardson is expected to be a full participant in the team's rookie minicamp, despite an early-February arthroscopic knee surgery on his left knee. The injury is considered a non-factor going forwards, according to reports out of Cleveland.

CLE: Browns' RB Montario Hardesty suffered from knee and calf injuries during 2011, and he managed just 3.0 yards per carry on 88 attempts last season. However, coach Pat Shurmur stated on January fourth, 2012 that 'I think he's hopefully finally getting back. This will be one of the first off-seasons he hasn't been dealing with an injury, so that will really help him develop.' However, the selection of Trent Richardson during the 2012 draft will put Hardesty into a change-of-pace role at best for 2012.

DAL: Cowboys' RB Demarco Murray was placed on IR December 13th, 2011 due to a fractured right ankle. A corrective surgery was successfully performed in mid-December, and Murray began running in early February, 2012. On May eighth, 2012, Murray declared himself back to 100% healthy.'He's at a point now where he goes and does everything on the field with everybody else,' RB coach Skip Peete said. Murray stated that a full offseason will help him stay healthy after missing most of training camp and the preseason last year because of hamstring injuries (OTAs/minicamps were also missed due to the labor unrest last year).

DEN: Broncos' RB Knowshon Moreno landed on IR Wednesday, November 16th due to a torn ACL in his right knee. He had surgery to repair the knee, and on February 23rd head coach John Fox stated that 'He's had a great rehab. (Steve) 'Greek' (Antonopulos), our trainer, does a great job. I see Knowshon in there just about every day down in rehab, so it's coming along quite nicely,'. However, Moreno was arrested for DUI on February first, 2012 and the team drafted rookie RB Ronnie Hillman in April. As of Friday, April sixth 2012 there were reports that Moreno would likely miss training camp and start regular season on the PUP list - that's assuming that the team keeps Moreno on the roster. His future in Denver looks murky at best as of mid-May.

DET: Lions' RB Jahvid Best was cleared to resume working out on Tuesday, March sixth 2012 after being limited to just six games during the 2011 season after suffering a series of serious concussions during 2011. Best has a history of concussions stretching back to college, and given the league's new emphasis on handling concussions carefully, Best is at risk of missing multiple games if he suffers another brain trauma during 2012.

DET: Lions' RB Jerome Harrison was placed on the reserve/non-football illness list on May 15th, ending his 2012 season. He's recovering from having a brain tumor surgically removed.

DET: Lions' RB Mikel Leshoure tore his left Achille's tendon on Monday, August 8th, 2011. He landed on IR Sunday, August 14th, and the injury was surgically repaired. On February 14th, 2012 it was reported that Leshoure was in the final stages of his rehab, and might be ready for some level of participation in OTAs, with full participation in training camp. On March 28th, choach Jim Schwartz stated: 'I never like to put timetables on it,' said Schwartz, 'but I would be surprised if it [Leshoure's medical clearance to play] wasn't before [training camp].' However, Leshoure has since been arraigned for twice being arrested for possession of marijuana (February 18th and March 12th, 2012). He pled guilty to a reduced charge of first offense, possesion of marijuana on Friday, May 11th - Leshoure is widely expected to get a four-game NFL suspension due to the legal woes, though the league has yet to act as of mid-May.

DET: Lions' RB Kevin Smith returned to the NFL last year after multiple knee injuries. He filled in for the injured Mikel Leshoure (Achilles) and Jahvid Best (concussions) at the end of the 2011 season, but did have some problems with his ankles and knees at the very end of the season. The team did re-sign Smith on Tuesday, March 27th, and he'll provide veteran insurance against further injury woes with Leshoure and Best - Leshoure may also be facing a suspension due to two marijuana possession arrests during the February and March of 2012.

GB: Packers' RB Alex Green enters 2012 coming off a torn ACL/reconstructive left knee surgery on November 16th, 2011. He is said to be making a 'very quick' recovery (head coach Mike McCarthy said so on March 28th, 2012). On May 10th, Packers team physician, Dr. Pat McKenzie, said he was 'hopeful' that Green will be ready for training camp. Green has been running since April 20th and has started cutting as of May 10th.

HOU: Texans' RB Arian Foster tweaked a foot during the playoffs, and sat out of the 2012 Pro Bowl as a result. However, he was awarded a five-year extension worth $43.5 million with $20.75 million guaranteed on March fifth, 2012. It appears the sore foot isn't an issue going forwards.

JAX: Jaguars' RB Rashad Jennings received more reps during the team's May OTAs because Maurice Jones-Drew was not in attendance. Jennings missed the 2011 season due to a knee injury, but the injury didn't require surgery and Jennings is participating in the 2012 OTAs. With Jennings' return to health, the Jaguars dropped fellow RB Deji Karim from the roster in April.

KC: Chiefs' RB Jamaal Charles suffered a torn ACL in his left knee on Sunday, September 18th, 2011, and was placed on IR Wednesday, September 21st. Charles took part in a football workout for the first time post-injury on Thursday, February second, 2012. On May ninth, Charles commented on his rehab: 'It made me stronger. It made me the person that I am today, I can't wait and I know how to take care of my body, how to eat right and do the right things and it's made me not want to wait to touch that field again. When I touch that field going out there, you're going to feel my pain; you're going to go through what I went through. That right there is going to be there for the rest of my career because I don't want to be out a whole year ever again. That point, at my stage, I'm 25 years old, I'm at the point in my life that I've got to win games ... That had me thinking a lot and made me a better player.' The team expects Charles to be ready for training camp.

KC: Chiefs' RB Peyton Hillis battled through hamstring and elbow injuries to have a disappointing 2011 campaign (10 games played: 161/587/3 rushing for 3.6 yards per carry on average, with 22/130/0 receiving). He was allowed to leave Cleveland in free agency and signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs for $3 million on Wednesday, March 14th, 2012.

MIA: Dolphins' RB Reggie Bush missed the season finale in 2011 due to a knee injury that didn't respond to treatment. However, he is expected to be the starting RB for the new coaching regime in Miami during 2012 - on March 29th, 2012 head coach Joe Philbin said bush would line up in several different spots this year, including wide receiver. 'He just (does) a lot of different things. We're excited about the flexibility it gives an offense.'

MIN: Vikings' RB Adrian Peterson suffered a torn MCL and ACL as well as meniscus damage in his left knee on Saturday, December 24th. He had reconstructive knee surgery on December 30th, 2011 and has aggressively rehabbed the injury this spring, starting to run on land in April. Peterson is optimistic that he'll be able to play in week one of the regular season, but so far the team's training staff isn't so sure: 'I love Adrian,' head team trainer Eric Sugarman said on May ninth, 2012. 'But let's make this clear: I'm still not going to be quoted as saying he's going to play in the first game. That's not fair. I don't know that ... He'll keep throwing that out there. And good for him. That's great. That's obviously our goal, to get him playing the first game. But only if he's functionally safe to do it. This is our franchise. We can't be foolish about this.'

MIN: Vikings' RB Toby Gerhart suffered a torn MCL in his knee during the 2011 season finale - the injury did not require surgery, though, and on April 11th Gerhart indicated that the knee was almost fully rehabilitated and that he would fully participate in offseason workouts. On May third, Gerhart indicated that he is preparing the carry the load for Minnesota in the event that Adrian Peterson (torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus damage) can't play early in the year. 'I'm preparing to be the guy,' Gerhart said. 'I try to do that every year. But this year it's a little more prevalent. I'm doing everything I can to be here, work hard, work with the new guys we have coming in. I'm pushing everybody and getting pushed by other guys. Preparing to be the guy, depending on whether Adrian comes back.'

NE: Patriots' RB Shane Vereen struggled with a nagging hamstring injury throughout 2011, and missed weeks 13-the Super Bowl while only appearing in five contests his rookie season (with carries in just two games, weeks 11 and 12). He'll have to stay healthier if he's going to challenge Stevan Ridley for touches during 2012.

NE: Patriots' RB Joseph Addai was plagued by hamstring woes during 2011, but did end the season (weeks 15-17) on the playing field for Indianapolis. He was allowed to depart the team in free agency and signed an incentive-laden deal with the Patriots on May fifth, 2012. He'll basically be trying out for the team during training camp.

NO: Saints' RB Mark Ingram has undergone turf toe surgery (early January 2012) and then a second arthroscopic surgery since August 2010 on his left knee (May fourth, 2012). The newest knee procedure should take about six weeks to heal, which means he may miss some OTA time but should be ready to participate in training camp. The series of knee operations is a red flag for potential fantasy owners, though. Stay tuned to see how well Ingram recovers from his latest surgical procedure.

NO: Saints' RB Pierre Thomas suffered a head injury/concussion during the Divisional round playoff game vs. San Franciscon on Saturday, January 14th. On Saturday, March 31st he said that he was recovered from the brain trauma - however, a history of concussion (or concussion-like) injury is a worry for fantasy owners as the league has been very proactive in handling concussions in recent years, holding some players out for weeks at a time - everyone has to pass the baseline neurological test once they've been concussed before resuming football activities.

WR

ARI: Cardinals' WR Larry Fitzgerald suffered bruised ribs and a lung injury during the week 17 game against Seattle - his injury didn't require surgery and he was able to participate in the Pro Bowl on January 29th, 2012.

BAL: Ravens' WR Anquan Boldin (knee) said Sunday, January 15th, 2012 that he felt fine after the team's Divisional Round playoff game win against the Houston Texans. He missed the final two regular season games after surgery to repair a partially torn meniscus in his knee. 'Yeah, I felt good,' Boldin said. 'I went to (QB Joe Flacco) before the game and told him, 'If you see me out there in one-on-one coverage, just throw it up. I'm make a play.' Fortunately, he was able to do that.' Boldin also played in the AFC Championship game, and looks set to start again for the Ravens during 2012.

BUF: Bills' WR Stevie Johnson is having 'very minor' surgery on his groin Tuesday, May first, 2012. He's expected to be fully recovered within weeks, though - this is not considered a big issue as of mid-May.

BUF: Bills' WR Donald Jones was lost for the season in week five of the 2011 campaign due to a serious ankle injury. He was placed on IR November 22nd, 2011. However, he enters 2012 as potentially the #2 wide receiver on the depth chart, depending on his full recovery from the ankle woes of last year.

BUF: Bills' WR Marcus Easley was medically cleared to resume his football career on Wednesday, December 14th 2011 after missinig the season due to a heart condition. Head coach Chan Gailey said at that time that Easley will be given a chance to compete for a roster spot during 2012, though he has missed two straight seasons since being drafted.

CAR: Panthers' WR David Gettis was placed on IR Tuesday, August 30th 2011 due to his torn left ACL. As of January 10th, 2012, Gettis had begun running during his rehabilitation from reconstructive knee surgery, and he hoped to participate in OTA's as usual. He should be on pace to compete for the #2 wide receiver position in training camp if he doesn't suffer a setback in his rehab.

CHI: Bears' WR Johnny Knox had successful back surgery on Monday, December 19th, 2011. Knox stated on February second, 2012 that he would wear a back brace until mid-March because of the surgery. As of March 26th, reports were that Knox is scheduled to start the 2012 season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, according to multiple sources familiar with Knox's progress. Knox was forced to wear a back brace after having surgery and was walking with a limp as of late March. There was more structural damage than initially anticipated, according to one source. Coach Lovie Smith stated on March 28th that 'It would be hard for me to go into that right there,' Smith said. 'Are you a religious man? Do you talk to God? He can probably tell you. Besides that, it's going to be pretty hard.' On April fifth, 2012, Bears general manager Phil Emery said that Knox continues to make progress; however, there is no timetable for his return at this point. 'He has made progress and will continue to make progress. As I've told him, ultimately it'll be him that will decide when he comes back,' Emery said. 'It'll be him telling us where he's at in the rehab process. We're a long way from having to make that decision and we're going to lean heavily on Johnny helping us make that decision. Johnny's made every effort to get back as quick as he can, and he is making progress. Yeah, you want to be cautious because it was a tough injury. It was a heavy-contact injury. Johnny understands where he's at. He's going to keep pushing forward, and there couldn't be a Bear with a better attitude than him.'

CIN: Bengals' WR Jordan Shipley tore his left ACL on September 18th, 2011, and missed the rest of the NFL season. As of May seventh, 2012 Shipley was medically cleared for full participation in OTAs, and it appears that he's on track to be fully participating in training camp.

DAL: Cowboys' WR Miles Austin recently (April 16th) revealed that he wasn't physically prepared for the 2011 season, and indicated that the lack of conditioning was a factor in the recurring hamstring injuries that limited him to 10 games during the regular season. He had previously stated on February 28th that his hamstrings were back to 100%.

DAL: Cowboys' WR Kevin Ogletree was limited by a sore knee during the final two weeks of the 2011 regular season. However, he was re-signed to a one-year deal on Friday, March 16th by the team - presumably he's past the knee issue and ready for OTAs/training camp.

DEN: Broncos' WR Andre Caldwell was put on IR by his former team, the Bengals, on Tuesday, December 27th, 2011 due to a groin/abdominal injury. He was signed to a two-year contract by the Broncos on Wednesday, March 21st, 2012 - he must have passed the Broncos' physical before being signed, so the injury appears to be a thing of the past.

DEN: Broncos' WR Demaryius Thomas had surgery on his left pinkie during March to remove a pin that was put in there when he shattered his finger in September 2011. As of April 17th, 2012 Thomas hadn't worked out with new QB Peyton Manning yet - hopefully his injured hand will get better soon.

DET: Lions' WR Ryan Broyles was drafted with the #54 pick this April, but he comes into the 2012 regular season off a torn ACL in his knee, suffered in November of last year. Some speculate that Broyles may begin the 2012 season on the PUP list, but GM Martin Mayhew stated on April 30th that Broyles could be ready sometime during training camp. Broyles has been working hard on his rehab according to head coach Jim Schwartz, and wouldn't rule Broyles out for week one of the regular season. So far, the potential start date of Broyles' NFL career is up in the air.

DET: Lions' WR Calvin Johnson tweaked his Achilles' tendon at the end of the 2011 season, but played well in the Lions' wild card playoff game loss. He skipped the 2012 Pro Bowl to rest the sore tendon, and received the largest contract in NFL history (seven years, $132 million, with $60 million guaranteed) on Wednesday, March 14th. It appears that the Achilles' injury is not a concern going forwards.

GB: Packers' WR Greg Jennings sustained a rib contusion during the NFL Playoffs, but it wasn't a significant injury and shouldn't hamper him during the OTAs/training camp here in 2012.

HOU: Texans' WR Lestar Jean was lost for the 2011 season due to a significant left shoulder injury during training camp - he was placed on IR Tuesday, August 30th, 2011. He was medically cleared in April 2012 to resume football activities/the team's voluntary workout program. Head coach Gary Kubiak stated on May first, 2012: 'We've got a couple of kids that we think a lot of, Lestar Jean being number one.' Jean was a training camp sensation last year before going down to the shoulder injury, and could push for time in the starting lineup during 2012.

HOU: Texans' WR Andre Johnson missed time during 2011 (nine games) due to a hamstring injury, but he played well during the playoffs and appears to be past the nagging injury as of mid-May, 2012.

IND: Colts' WR Donnie Avery struggled with hamstring problems during 2011, but Indianapolis added him to their rebuilding squad on Friday, March 23rd, 2012. It remains to be seen if he can stay healthy after playing zero games in 2010 and just eight games for Tennessee during 2011.

IND: Colts' rookie WR T.Y. Hilton was limited during the latter part of their early-May rookie minicamp due to a sore hamstring. He also pulled his hamstring during his Pro Day during the pre-draft process, so this injury has been nagging Hilton for some time.

JAX: Jaguars' rookie WR Justin Blackmon missed the last day of rookie camp due to a sore foot, but returned to OTAs on Tuesday, May 15th. Evidently, the problem was due to a pair of new cleats that didn't fit correctly, and isn't a serious injury.

JAX: Jaguars' WR Lee Evans had a miserable, injury-marred (ankle injury) 2011 season with just nine games played for Baltimore - he saw 31 targets but caught just 4/74/0 for the team. He was signed by the Jaguars on Monday, April 16th to a one-year contract.

JAX: Jaguars' WR Mike Thomas suffered a concussion in week 14 of the 2011 season (Sunday, December 11th), and passed his concussion test on Thursday, December 22nd. Though there are no reports of post-concussion issues for Thomas, players with a history of prior concussions are a larger injury risk due to the league's proactive stance on concussion assessment and treatment. It's common to see several weeks missed in the instance of a repeat brain trauma (for example, Detroit RB Jahvid Best's experience during 2011).

MIA: Dolphins' WR Davone Bess revealed on Tuesday, April 24th, 2012 that the knee injury he suffered in week 17 of the 2011 season was a torn medial collateral ligament and partially-torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee. He stayed in Florida throughout the offseason to rehab the injury, and Bess did practice during the April 24th voluntary offseason workout.

MIN: Vikings' WR Michael Jenkins landed on the IR list November 29th, 2011 due to a torn meniscus cartilage in his knee. As of April 27th, 2012 he wasn't taking part in team workouts - keep an eye on his rehab if you are considering investing picks in the Vikings' wide receiver corps this year.

MIN: Vikings' WR Percy Harvin (shoulder injury) played with a sprained acromioclavicular joint last year, and an MRI exam showed damage around the AC joint that will require minor arthroscopic surgery. The procedure was scheduled for April tenth, 2012, but Harvin delayed the procedure in order 'to support my family through emergency.' Harvin said he'd have the surgery 'soon', but he didn't participate in team workouts on April 27th and it is unclear if Harvin has rescheduled the procedure or not. The team is reportedly concerned about 'erratic behavior' on the part of Harvin.

NO: Saints' WR Lance Moore missed the Divisional round playoff game vs. San Francisco due to a nagging hamstring injury. Hopefully, the offseason rest will set the sore muscle right - Moore owners will want to monitor his participation during OTAs this summer.

TE

ARI: Cardinals' TE Todd Heap struggled with a hamstring injury until late in the 2011 season - he did score one TD in the season finale, but was limited in practices and during game day for much of the year due to the injury. Heap commented on December eighth, 2011: 'I don't feel like this is something that happened, or that the healing process has been (long), because of age. It was just a different injury. I have a lot of good football in me,' Heap said.

BUF: Bills' TE Scott Chandler suffered a knee injury in the team's season finale, but Bills head coach Chan Gailey said TE Scott Chandler (knee) did not need surgery on the knee injury he suffered. Chandler was expected to be fully healed in a few weeks, and he was signed to a contract extension March eighth, 2011 - he seems to be past the knee problem for 2012.

BUF: Bills' TE Lee Smith was placed on IR Tuesday, December 20th 2011 due to an ankle injury suffered on Sunday, December 18th, 2011. So far during his time in the NFL, Smith has done more blocking than receiving, with 4/11/0 receiving for the Bills over 10 games (three starts).

CAR: Panthers' TE Greg Olsen suffered some back issues during December 2011, but they aren't a serious concern entering the 2012 campaign.

CAR: Panthers' TE Gary Barnidge suffered a broken ankle on Friday, August 19th 2011 and was placed on IR Tuesday, August 30th. Even though he didn't play a down last year, the team signed him to a one-year extension on Thursday, December eighth, 2011 - reports at that time indicated that the team wants to give him another chance to compete as a receiver from the TE position. On March 21st, 2012 it was reported that the team was excited about Barnidge's potential as a downfield threat prior to his ankle injury.

CLE: Browns' TE Benjamin Watson was placed on IR Friday, December 16th, 2011 due to a concussion. As of Sunday, February 12th he was reported to be fully recovered from the injury and wasn't experiencing any lingering effects. However, from a fantasy perspective, a history of concussions is worrisome as the league is being very careful with treating concussions, holding players out for weeks at a time.

DEN: Broncos' TE Julius Thomas had surgery on April eighth, 2012 to repair ligaments in his ankle. The team expects him to recover in time for training camp, but he'll miss valuable reps with new QB Peyton Manning during OTAs as a result of the surgery.

GB: Packers' TE Andrew Quarless (ACL injury on December fourth, 2011) is likely to start the season on the PUP list, according to a May 13th comment by Packers' head coach Mike McCarthy. McCarthy indicated that the tight end probably won't be seeing the field anytime soon. 'Andrew, just from a timetable standpoint, is a question mark [for the start of regular season].' McCarthy stated.

JAX: Jaguars' TE Zach Miller was placed on IR Tuesday, October 18th, 2011 due to a shoulder injury that required surgical repair. He also struggled with knee and foot issues that limited him to four games during 2011. On April 13th, 2012 it was reported that Miller was medically cleared to practice again at the beginning of April, 2012.

KC: Chiefs' TE Tony Moeaki suffered a torn ACL on Thursday, September first, 2011 and was placed on IR Saturday, September third. Reconstructive knee surgery was performed. Chiefs' general manager Scott Pioli said he expected Moeaki to play in regular season (February 24th, 2012). As of Tuesday, April 24th Moeaki said that he expected to be back in action in time for training camp.

MIA: Dolphins' TE Anthony Fasano suffered a concussion in week 15 of the 2011 season, missed the game week 16, but then returned for practices leading into the season finale. It doesn't appear that there are lingering after-effects from the brain trauma. However, a history of concussions is worrisome for fantasy owners as the league is being very careful with treating concussions, holding players out for weeks at a time, especially players who have previously suffered a concussion (as Fasano has).

MIN: Vikings' TE John Carlson suffered a torn labrum in his shoulder during August 2011 and was placed on IR Saturday, September third. Carlson said on January fifth, 2012 he was not completely recovered from the shoulder injury he had the past season but has been able to run and do some weight lifting recently. He said he was doing around 90 percent of what he does normally. Carlson was signed to a five year, $25 million deal on Wednesday, March 14th, 2012.

NE: Patriots' TE Rob Gronkowski underwent ankle surgery after the Super Bowl and was still in a walking boot as of March 21st, 2012. On April 15th, Gronkowski said that he expected his injured ankle to be 100% healed by May - it appears that he'll be in good shape for training camp, barring any setbacks with the injury.

NE: Patriots' TE Aaron Hernandez suffered a concussion during the Divisional Round playoff game vs. Denver on Saturday, January 14th. He did receive clearance to play in the AFC Championship game and the Super Bowl - it doesn't appear that the concussion caused lasting after-effects. However, a history of concussions is worrisome for fantasy owners as the league is being very careful with treating concussions, holding players out for weeks at a time if they suffer a subsequent brain trauma.

NO: Saints' TE David Thomas was placed on IR Tuesday, November 22nd due to after-effects from a concussion. As of Sunday, March 11th he was reported to be ready to play in 2012 despite the brain trauma that limited him to five games last season. However, a history of concussions is worrisome for fantasy owners as the league is being very careful with treating concussions, holding players out for weeks at a time if they suffer a subsequent brain trauma.

PK

BUF: Bills' PK Rian Lindell hurt his shoulder making a tackle mid-way thru the season, and was placed on IR Thursday, December eighth. He was re-signed on February third, 2012, but there will be another kicker in camp. John Potter is the new kicker, who was said to be signed as a kickoff specialist after the team drafted Potter at pick #251 (seventh round) during the 2012 NFL draft.

NO: Saints' PK Garrett Hartley will have to stave off a training camp challenge from veteran John Kasay - Kasay filled in for Hartley last year after Hartley missed all of last season due to a hip injury, and the team has indicated that the contest is an 'open competition' between the two kickers.

By Rob Rang | The Sports Xchange/CBSSports.com

As the original owners of the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft, the St. Louis Rams follow yesterday's review of the Indianapolis Colts as the next post in NFLDraftScout.com's "Finding the Fits" series. The goal of this series is to identify one relatively unheralded player per team who would appear to be a particularly good schematic fit and therefore more likely to be a surprise contributor early in his respective pro career.

In trading down only four spots, new general manager Les Snead and veteran head coach Jeff Fisher were given a bounty of picks by the Washington Redskins. The Rams will have the Redskins' first round picks in each of the next two drafts, which frankly, they may need because while St. Louis added an awful lot of talent to their roster last weekend, they also drafted several players with a history of making poor decisions off the field - which limits their potential to make a reliable contribution on it.

In fact, the player in best position to make an immediate impact would seem to be kicker Greg Zuerlein, who the Rams selected with the first pick of the sixth round, No. 171 overall. The Rams thought enough of the Missouri Western State product to release veteran kicker Josh Brown. Brown, incidentally, was signed by the New York Jets one day later.

It is easy to understand why the Rams might feel confident in the rookie's chances at making big kicks in the NFL - just take a peek at his statistics. Zuerlein nailed 23 of 24 kicks this year for MWSU and was a perfect nine for nine on kicks over 50+ yards. He showed some grit under pressure too, drilling a 57-yarder late against rival Missouri Southern that wound up being the game-winner. And this was Zuerlein's first year in the program. He'd spent his previous time earning All-American recognition at Nebraska of Omaha, but had to transfer once the university elected to drop football as part of their jump to Division I. As one might expect considering Zuerlein's success as a field goal kicker (of the six field goals he missed in 2010, five were blocked) and kickoff weapon (43.1% of his kicks from 2008-10 went for touchbacks), he was heavily recruited by FCS schools but an eligibility snafu limited his options.

Once the Rams cut Brown they essentially gave Zuerlein the job. Sure, the Rams signed free agent kicker Garrett Lindholm in January and he could, technically, win the job but only if the rookie falls on his face. Once St. Louis drafted Zuerlein, the Rams were essentially "pot-committed." During Jeff Fisher's 16-year run as head coach of the Houston Oilers and Tennessee Titans, his club never invested a draft pick in a kicker.

Perhaps most intriguing for Zuerlein (and possibly hardcore Fantasy Football enthusiasts) will be his fit with Fisher - a relationship that could lead to plenty of field goal opportunities as a rookie. Fisher will demand a ball-control approach that will move the chains with more consistency than the team saw a year ago under offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Furthermore, Fisher has shown uncommon courage in allowing his kickers of the past to attempt long field goals. While under Fisher, current Titans' kicker Rob Bironas attempted 22 field goals over 50+ yards, including a memorable 60-yarder in 2006.

If Zuerlein can continue his deep accuracy in the NFL, he could prove quite the unsung find of the Rams' 2012 draft.

It looks like the last cards are being played so they can justify their exit from St. Louis. I'll repost my e-mail to Ram's Vice-President Kevin Demoff and his reply when they announce they are moving in 24-36 months. It will be funnier then.

What info should I include for my draft spreadsheet?

Our league does not allow the use of Draft Dominator, so I've been using pen and paper for most of the ten years I've been playing in my leagues. However, I'll have the use of a brand new Mac this year and was considering creating a "real time" spreadsheet for my auction leagues this year (it's not really necessary for a serpentine draft, unless I could figure out a way to recreate the "best value" feature from DD).

I'm just in the pre-planning stages, but this is the information that I'm so far planning on including:

Player, Team, bye week

Projected fantasy points, projected points per game (useful for guys like Vick or those with suspensions)

ADP (just to get a relative idea of where other leagues rate them to have an idea who might be cheaper/more expensive).

Dollar "value" (based on VBD calculations), plus "expected cost" based on historical data.

Dynamic auction value (+/- calculated value based on money spent already)

Player notes

(?) Considering keeping a list of all teams' rosters (or at least # selected), but this may be more info than I really need.

Anything that I'm forgetting? I want to keep it as simple as possible (I'm not a native Mac user), so I'll probably stick to salary cost and possibly team selected (other than "mine/not mine"). Or should I even bother?

WR Dynasty Questions and Draft Question

People seem to be so high on Jennings. I just don't get it. I understand the pros, but I feel the cons outweigh them. What makes people think against Andre? Or Welker? Or Roddy? Besides their age, they seem to be much more talented, specifically Andre, and can be for quite a few years to come.

Also looking for some opinions. Coming up in a 16-team dynasty draft. Already have Cam and Forte, looking for a 3rd. Only start 1 RB, 2 WR, but 3 flex. Some players on the board:
The ones I named plus
Murray
Charles

Been thinking about trading Brees. Aside from his contract situation, will his value ever be higher? I mean he had 1000 more yards and 10 more TDs than his previous three years average. In my Dynasty league, I have Matt Ryan and Ben as my other QBs. I was offered Ryan Mathews straight up. I should be able to get the 1.2 (Luck, Griffin, or Martin) or the 1.3 and a guy like Percy Harvin or Vincent Brown.

They are going to obviously grab players not drafted and also players that simply are cut from NFL rosters so the quality obviously won't be there. A 2nd league that could exploit some of the NFL backlash could be successful but in all likelihood no one is going to do the right thing and have a league that bans anything that is not natural or organic in the system making it much more difficult for players to maintain absurd playing weights and strip the game back down to its roots. Baseball cleaned itself up and is now experiencing a new romance with fans who wanted the game to stay as pure as possible.

But anyways the USFL will premiere in March and will start in 8 cities, not sure which ones but likely NY, LA, Chi, and a few others.

i'd like to talk about mike shanahan and how he uses his running backs. Seems like any time i bring this up it's almost like an automated response "Sorry you've reached the voicemail of we're not sure what running back mike will use this week. at the tone please leave your name, number and a brief message of frustration". Is this topic really that simple? Is the answer when it comes to looking at roy helu to just completely avoid the washington backfield this year or is there more to the story. Has mike shanahan always been like this? I feel like there have been periods in mike's career in which he really has had one guy. mike anderson? clinton portis? i'd like to hear whether the shark pool thinks "in mike shanahan we do not trust" OR are there some out there that think roy helu could be the guy this year and has real value in the 4th/5th round?

Gronkowski...or...Graham

The "should you take a TE in the first 15 picks" has beaten to death in THIS THREAD.

However, I'm curious who you like more - Gronkowski or Graham - in 2012 (redraft). I think it's a very relevant topic for those picking at the end of round 1 (especially in 14 & 16 team leagues)

Gronkowski:
2011 - 90 rec, 1327 yds, 17 TDs, 14.7 ypc

Graham:
2011 - 99 rec, 1310 yds, 11 TDs, 13.2 ypc

My general impression from these boards is that most expect Gronkowski to regress slightly (gaudy 2011 stats come back to earth, Lloyd's arrival, etc). While the conversation about Graham seems to be "not that much different from 2011". Who do you like more in 2012? And why do you feel that way?
[edited to add non-ppr & ppr options...although I don't think it really matters too much]
