He has done very well thus far on a Dallas team that looks to have a high powered offense. Does anyone have any knowlege of Folk? Does he have a strong leg? The next Gould, Rackers?
This is from http://theboysblog.com/2007/05/07/meet-you...icks-nick-folk/Nick Folk, PK, University of Arizona, 6th round draft pick
Measurables: 6′1″, 225, 4.95 forty yard dash
Positives: Has a pretty strong leg; gets good distance on kickoffs and has the ability to connect on field goals outside of 40 yards (hit a 51 yarder against Purdue in 2006 and a 62 yarder in the Arizona spring scrimmage). Arizona’s net kickoff average of 64 yards was one of the best in the nation Folk’s senior year. Has punting experience (96 total attempts) and can function in that capacity if necessary. Missed just one field attempt inside 40 yards his senior year at Arizona. Has performed in high-pressure situations and shows consistency in the clutch. Earned All Pac-10 Honors in 2006. Also, at 6′1″ and 225, Folk probably could’ve thrown a better block on Jordan Babineaux than Gramatica managed to in the Seahawks game.
Negatives: The biggest knock on Folk is consistency. His accuracy is less than outstanding, both inside and outside of 40 yards. Folk kicks the ball too low at times and will have his kicks blocked on occasion (although this has been partially attributed to a porous Arizona line).
Outlook: The Cowboys have not had a consistently reliable kicker on the roster since the 1998 version of Richie Cunningham, although Billy Cundiff did a pretty good impersonation of one for the 2004-2004 seasons. Last year’s big-ticket signing of Mike Vanderjagt was supposed to shore up the position for the foreseeable future. Fast forward to 2007: Vanderjagt is no longer on the roster and 31 year old Martin Gramatica is penciled in as the starter for this year’s campaign. The position is clearly an area of need for Dallas.
That said, there is not much to indicate that Nick Folk is the long-term answer Cowboys fans have been looking for. Folk is a low-risk investment with a 6th round pick, and he possesses the leg strength to be a legitimate NFL kicker. However, his accuracy is suspect. He hit 15 out of 20 field goal attempts his senior year, and 7 out of 11 his junior year. Two of the misses his junior year were blocked: Folk kicks his balls too low at times. What the Cowboys are seeking in a kicker in consistency, and Folk’s track record thus far does not indicate that he will be an upgrade in that department over the Martin Gramaticas and Jose Cortezes of the world.
Folk did benefit from a strong combine, where he was clearly the #1 place kicker in attendance, nailing all but one of his attempts from inside 40 yards. Still, many draftniks were puzzled that Folk went ahead of Colorado’s Mason Crosby, the consensus #1 kicker on the board this year.
Ultimately, Folk’s real NFL value at this point appears to be as a kickoff specialist, where his big leg can be a weapon in the field position game. As a field goal kicker, the jury’s still out; his accuracy will have to improve considerably in order for him to be counted upon as the only active place kicker on game day.
While the Cowboys have a Pro Bowl punter in Mat McBriar, Folk is a capable punter as well, leading the nation with 56 yards/punt after he took over punting duties halfway through his senior year.
I think part of the reason they went for it on 4th and 4 yesterday was that he would have been attempting a 51 yarder off that crappy dirt infield in Miami. He did easily make a 47 yarder off the dirt, though.with most leagues giving extra points for yardage kicks i would probably pass. The Cowboys went for a 4th and 4 (T.O's score) rather than give him a shot at a 50 yarder when he was kicking extremely well. His range is limited it seems, more from the coaching staff than leg strength though..
Actually, could make a very nice play against Chicago this week, as they could be limited to field goals for the most part. Not looking like a good play this week against CHI but will probably pick him up after this week.
I agree. I think the Cowboys can move the ball on any D but where it could get tough for them against a strong one like Chicago's is in the Red Zone. I wouldn't be surprised if Folk got 3-4 FG opportunities this week.Actually, could make a very nice play against Chicago this week, as they could be limited to field goals for the most part. Not looking like a good play this week against CHI but will probably pick him up after this week.

I have Gostkowski in several leagues as well. I like him better because the NE defense will put them in good FG position more often than the Dallas D. I would have no problem targeting Folk if I had doubts about my K getting the job done.Beat out Martin Grammatica in preseason - not saying much, but if you're kicker isn't kicking too good I like this guy a lot because the Cowboys will score alot of points this season in the weaker NFC. I have Gostkowski for the Pats, so I don't think I'd pick Folk over him, but both teams have the same potential to put up a lot of points and whether it's PAT's or FG's, unless you're loaded at kicker (why?) he should be your starter.
Grammatica got injured week 4 of preseason and I believe they put him on the PUP. The Cowboys were having a hard time picking between the two.Beat out Martin Grammatica in preseason - not saying much,
I have Gostkowski as well and I'm thinking of dropping him for Folk. I don't see NE having much trouble getting in the endzone so Gostkowski may only get 20 or so FG opps all year. Plus he has some consistency issues of his own and NE in Dec can be a tough place to kick.I have Gostkowski in several leagues as well. Folk would have been the kicker anyhow. He was winning the job.Grammatica got injured week 4 of preseason and I believe they put him on the PUP. The Cowboys were having a hard time picking between the two.Beat out Martin Grammatica in preseason - not saying much,
