Chris Taylor (1 Viewer)

Buffaloes

Anyone know wha the deal is with this guy? I've heard that the coaching staff is high on him, but then the injury last year. Has anyone heard anything on him? He could be a guy to keep an eye on considering the two guys ahead of him on the depth chart have injury history.

The last I heard during the off-season was that his health looked fine, but that he would look great one one play and totally lost the next.

I'm told if he every gets a chance to show himself on the field it will be hard to keep him off. WIth the guys in front of him more experienced and paid more, he's going to need some injuries or just a complete lack of production before he can hit the field. I think the Texans are going to try to use him in the 3rd down back mode, however they drafted Slaton also to do that.

When, not if, Ahman Green and Chris Brown go down with injury he'll be battling Slaton and Darius Walker for touches. If Slaton plays like he did in 07 (and not 06) then the doorway for Taylor to step in will be very open, I'm targetting him in my deep dyno vet draft.

From Houstontexans.com from Kubiak on chris Taylor

on if he feels if RB Chris Taylor is back to where he was and where he fits in) “I felt that way the last four or five days of OTAs. I did not feel that way initially. It looked like he was definitely not the same. But he came out of OTAs very good. He looked good this morning. We are also going to work him a little bit at fullback. So, he’s a big part of this team and he needs to have a good camp and stay healthy.”

This was on draftsharks they asked Houston columnst John McLain about him right before the NFL draft; I remembered it bc I thought who is Chris Taylor?

Draft Sharks: Time to squeeze some insider juice. Who will be the lead tailback for your Houston Texans - Ahman Green or Chris Brown? Do you see Darius Walker competing? Is Chris Taylor ever going get a shot? Or will Houston draft a blue-chip RB and complicate everything even more?

McClain: The Texans will not draft an RB in the first or third rounds [their top two picks]. Chris Taylor is completely recovered from the knee injury he suffered on the first day of camp last season. He fits what new assistant head coach Alex Gibbs is doing with the zone scheme. Either Green or Brown won't be part of the 53-man roster. I don't think Walker will be, either.

Pretty sure that he hurt his knee again after the draft.I must be mistaken because I can't find it online. Sorry about that.

I think Slaton is going to be fun to watch in this system. He imo, is the most intriguing out of the Houston Rb's. I was a big fan of his in college and of all the places for him to go, I thought Houston was the perfect fit for him. I don't have a whole lot of confidence in Green, and wouldn't be totally suprised to see him not make it out of camp. Brown has some serious upside too, along with Taylor, though I really haven't seen much of him.

Green is as talented as they come. He's a monster -- unfortunately he's had some injury problems of late.

Taylor has the potential (a FFlers nightmare word, I know) to be great.

Slaton was drafted for a reason and that reason is that seemingly no RB on this team can stay healthy.

Grabbing Brown doesn't help matters in Houston, and I expect him to be a free agent sometime in August.

To sum things up for Taylor -- if Green stays healthy, nobody else on the team has a shot. If not, either Taylor or Slaton should have a pretty good season.

Reading this thread, I realize how underrated CBrown is. I will target him late and hope for the few games of awesomeness he can give.

Talent wise:

CBrown

everyone else

Of course the injuries change everything:

took taylor late in a medium-deep dyno...guy looks like this year's ryan grant to me, a big, strong back with good straight line speed in a zone blocking scheme with a bunch of crappy/injury prone options around him...it's pretty clear none of those other guys are the full-time back of the future, so i have a feeling he'll get his shot

I disagree, I think Green gets waived, not Brown. Green is pretty much toast at this point, he's been hurt and missed at least 10 games in two of the past three seasons. Brown is younger, faster, but perhaps just as injury-prone as Green...but all things being equal, you go with the younger, faster guy every time.If Brown finally puts it all together , he's probably looking at receiving a fat new contract for 2009 and beyond..I'm willing to take on chance on him with the notion that he's going to be the main guy in Houston this season..if the injury bug bites again, his NFL career is over..

Taylor went down in the morning practice and walked off the field with help. Someone else said they saw him trying to walk it off after, but I didn't see him after he left the field.

You have to figure the Texans will pick up a FA RB. Now that Jordan is on the market he might be considered. I don't rule out Benson ending up here also, I think their looking at who they can get on the cheap side, waiting game going on now with all the FA RB's SA, Benson, Jordan, etc.

Same knee or something new?
This is total and utter speculation, but I'd say something new. He didn't do anything that I saw that made me think it was a knee, no grabbing it or hobbling like he didn't want to put weight on the joint. I think he might have just pulled something or maybe got a stinger. I think he went down kind of awkwardly, but I don't think his feet were planted to where it would have been likely to be a knee.Take that with a big grain of salt until we hear anything concrete, though.

From understanding it was a hammy tweak. Not thought to be serious at the moment.

The way he was sitting after he went down (kind of gingerly stretching his legs out), I think hammy tweak is very likely, yeah. It also would explain why he went down in the first place. He was in some traffic but I didn't think he got hit, I thought he more went down on his own or slipped.

hmmm...

Texans RB Chris Taylor is trying his hand at fullback after all.The experiment has been speculated for months, but it got lost amongst all of the Taylor fluff pieces emanating from the local media this offseason. In some fantasy circles he's been considered a candidate to take over at running back eventually, but this move is a sign that Taylor is doing all he can to just try and make the team.Rotoworld

Better news from houstontexans.com
(on if RB Chris Taylor was cramping) “Yes, just cramping up. You know, he had a little bit of that problem last year; he cramped up on us some. It’s hot and we had some shells on this morning for the first time and had a good long practice, so that’s part of it. You’ve got to keep pushing.”

I think Taylor has been closer just a guy who is hanging around than any type of future starter except for the fact that he played 1 good regular season game, is with a zone blocking team and most importantly every other RB on the Texans is a combination of injured/old/mediocore.

The possible move to FB has to be a survival move for Taylor. They already had a ton of options and now looking at Bell. I think he would be happy about the chance to stay employed.

They worked him at FB last year in camp too ... its always been an angle they have tried to give him more value and a better shot of making the team.

Texans | Taylor moved to fullback

Tue, 29 Jul 2008 11:01:15 -0700

The Associated Press reports Houston Texans RB Chris Taylor has been moved to fullback because of the depth the team has at the running back position. He is expected to compete with FB Vonta Leach and FB Jameel Cook.

Don't know what is going on inside the bubble and at other practices. But today he was still lining up at tailback. If he took any snaps at all at fullback, I didn't notice it. But he was a regular in the tailback rotation.

Bump for update? I'm not seeing any recent articles that indicate anything other than that "Taylor is competing with X, Y and Z for work as a RB".

Haven't heard anything new and the public camps are done. I wish we had all of our camps open like some teams do. :sarcasm:First pre-season game is Saturday night, so we should get another look at him then.

I'm starting to think this too. I happily snapped him up last year and held onto him as a flier, but if you can't stand out even a little bit in that poor group of RB's then you've got to wonder what he can possibly accomplish. I'll hold onto him for now, but I'm no longer optimistic.

this is a note I linked in the texans off-season's thread,
Running back note from Lance Z.

I watched the Saturday AM practice as well so we saw pretty much the same thing. I think Green still looks like he has something in the tank and I still see enough burst. He's not as quick as he once was, but it is good enough. I think Taylor's biggest problem right now is that he isn't always making the right reads in the zone. That is a major deal. He has to get that worked out. I agree with you on Walker. I think he's just a guy, but he seemed to make the right reads as much as any back out there. He's serviceable. I like the zip that Slaton shows, but even when the Texans are just arm wrapping him, he seems to slow way down. I'm wondering if he can get any yards after contact and run as hard as they need.

From a fantasy standpoint, if your league is deep enough or you have a taxi squad, Taylor is in as good a spot as a guy who is probably RB4 could be. Heck, even if he gets cut by the Texans, given the history of the other guys, Chris should stay by the phone.
