Greg Lewis-WR-Patriots

Thurs. Mar. 5 - Rotoworld

Patriots acquired WR Greg Lewis from the Eagles in exchange for undisclosed compensation,

according to NFL Network's Adam Schefter.

Lewis, 29, only has 56 catches over the last three years, but has always been a Patriot killer and carries a cheap contract through 2011. Mostly a special teamer in Philly, he'll be a candidate for a bigger role now. He could replace Jabar Gaffney as a third receiver behind Randy Moss and Wes Welker. Lewis' kickoff coverage value probably assures him of a roster spot.

:tumbleweed:

I can't believe the Pats actually traded for GLew. He was probably gonna be cut by the Eagles considering the fact that the guy blows.

Not sure what NE sees in him.Good route runner and decent hands, but no real strength to fight defenders off the lineor in traffic. As a Pats fan, I hope it's a real low pick.

He is a nice replacement for Kelley Washington. they still need a WR2, so Welker can work the slot

concur. He's got good speed, probably a ST player only.I just don't see him stepping in for Gaffney as a #3.

Lewis and a 2010 pick to NE. A 2009 5th rounder apparently going to PHI.
Do we know what round the 2010 pick is ?
If I knew I would have said. Not known yet. 5th rounder to PHI has not been confirmed yet either.
WEEI said both picks are unconfirmed. If the picks are close, then I can understand the deal,as NE has a boatload of picks this year, and probablyneeds to unload a couple of them. Not big on Lewis at all, but I can't really question any BB move.

I think Gaffney's replacement is coming in the form of Holt, TO, or Harrison. As a Packer fan I'm glad GB is in the NFC. The Pats scare the hell out of me in 2009.

Apparently Lewis is one of those guys that BB goes out of his way to praise before games raving about all he does. (Similar to how he talked about Sammy Morris & Welker). And with good reason -- Lewis had a great SB vs. NE and had a great game in 07 when Philly almost upset the undefeated Pats.

He's a nice guy when you go four wide, I suppose, but NE still needs a legit starting WR on the outside. I'm still holding out hope on a Lance Moore offer, or ideally Holt if he's cut.

I'm pretty sure most Eagles fans will agree....that SB game was the best game of Greg Lewis' career by a huge huge longshot.

In his two games against NE, Lewis has totaled 8-141-3. Maybe BB brought him in to practice multi receiver sets for the defense, as he seemed to have done well against the Pats.

These kindof moves from the Pats always leave me scratching my head. I know he has some deep speed, but he'll have a hard time even making this team. I really think for now, as much as anything, he's a body. New England just lost Gaffney and Washington. And once you get past the names Welker and Moss, you get into a bunch of names very people have heard of. He's a warm body. Id be surprised if he made the team. But for now, he's on my All-Offseason Team - honorable mention.

The only way I can make sense of it is the Pats swap picksand take a small hit with the swap, but they need to dump 2009 picks,as they are loaded. Greg Lewis will be strictly a KR, taking Kelley Washington's spot on the roster.

Without dumping '09 picks the guy they drafted in the 5th round also would have had a hard time making the team as well.

Agreed. But that guy, whoever it will be, wont be able to join the team 'til May. This team is gonna be looking to work out together very soon. And the Pats literally need bodies to throw the ball to right now. That's just my guess here. We've lost Kelley Washington and Jabar Gaffney. And obviously have Moss and Welker. But beyond that, the position is paper thin. I dont know if Lewis will make this team, so I wont write him off. He's about the same age as Troy Brown when he started making significant contributions in NE"s passing game, so you never know. But Brady's gonna be throwing the ball alot very soon. And he'll need people to throw to. And Lewis for now fits that bill.

I wonder if he'll become the new "gunner" for the Pats. As much flack as Washington got, he constantly seemed to be the guy either making a tackle on punt coverage or downing the ball inside the 10 (Very, very underrated in that regard IMO).

I don't think Lewis will be much more than a #4/#5 at best in terms of the WR spot, but if he can be the 2nd coming of Washington on ST, I'll be happy to see it.

Also remember Belichick came up through the ranks thanks to his ST coaching. Don't discount a guy "just" because they may be a ST guy only.

Don't the Eagles have a boat load of 09 picks as well?

Lewis is a little guy. Maybe a buck-80. Washington is somewhere in the 210plus range. He was much stronger in that role. Lewis would probably get blown up into the stands.

Lewis is Gaffney's replacement as the towken ex-Eagle WR who was better there. He's a decent ST player, but not a returner.Pats have been looking to the Eagle WR lately: Gaffney, Stallworth, Lewis.

He had 15 special teams tackles way back in 2004. He may not be the equivalent of Josh Cribbs gunner wise but sounds like he can be a valuable contributor if put in that role.

we all thought the Pats were crazy dealing for Morris and Welker, especially at the price of the picks they gave for Welker. i'm sure they have a vision for Greg Lewis. saying that i don't expect much or anything 'welker-like' for Greg on Offense. he'll likely make his due covering kicks. the longer harrison/holt aren't signed or dealt to different teams it becomes scarier and scarier that one will end up as a Patriot. Both are on 1leg but for the Pats there is no doubt they'd perform beautifully

I'm not a Greg Lewis fan by any stretch, but he's generally under-rated and grossly under-appreciated (ESPECIALLY by Philly fans).

He's not starter material, but he's nice depth.

He's a good measurement of WR depth. On a team with good WR depth, he shouldn't make the roster. That hasn't been the case for years in Philly, where he always seemed to grab the WR5 or WR6 spot.

His upside is limited, but I guess what I am saying is that he is better then MOST WR5's on MOST teams. To be fair though, most teams use that slot on a young player with some upside. With all of that in mind, Lewis is best suited as deep depth on a Veteran team with deep playoff hopes....a perfect fit for NE.

WOW!Why wasn't Miami breaking the bank for him?

Lewis sucks, the only reason he was kept around was because years ago he signed a deal that I believe was 5 years for $6 million. He was so cheap there was no way our FO would get rid of although we have never really been strapped for cap space.
