With the Spring leagues getting organized, it's never too late to start looking at draft strategy and pin-pointing those late-round gems. Many subscribe to the QBBC theory and part of the success of that strategy is being able to get the most bang from your late-round bucks.

So who is your early favorite for Best Economy QB 2006?

If you choose 'other', please post the name.

Early on ... I'm excited about Gary Kubiak's hand on the Texans' offense. I can see Carr being reasonably productive.

Dodds just picked up Bledsoe in the 12th in an expert's league, and IMO that's a steal given that Drew ranked 6th last year and the 'Boys added Owens.

I'd throw McNair in there. He's a bit of a tweener that even on the Ravens could offer some good value.

Bledsoe (with T.O.) is a good bargain, my pick is Phillip Rivers. I have always been down on the kid is entering his third year and stepping into a great situation.

Bledsoe in the 12th would be an excellent value pick, but I don't see any leagues I'm in, where he'll slip that far.No offense intended here, but getting Bledsoe in the 12th, doesn't speak to this being much of an "expert's league".

Going with experience in Brad Johnson. I don't think he's going to be lights out in Minny, but I think he should be more consistant than the rest.

Runner up for me is Frye. On a complete gut feeling.

I like Simms in Tampa, he showed lots of poise down the stretch and improved almost every week ... with Caddy running the ball a ton once again I think he'll be a very good late round QB

Any QB in a Martz O has to be considered as well ... gawd knows there should be a ton of talent on the receiving end of the ball, all they need is to exercise a little maturity

I like the o-line work they did via the draft. Caddy will have lanes to run in which should take pressure off of Simms, which is always good. He showed something last year and I think he will surprise a bit this year. I also like Carr with better receiving options so they can maybe make games closer when they are airing it out to play catchup late in games. I wouldn't want to touch him if the Texans didn't make those picks at 3.01 and 3.02 for o-line help. Bledsoe would be a nice steal late in drafts considering he should imrove on last year that saw him top ten.

I am looking forward to the FBG article on QBBC this year.

Breese, Carr and Big Ben worked out just fine last year.

Bledsoe is definitely a good one to target. Only cavaet here is that he's worth a lot less if the line doesnt hold up, and they are depending on some vets who broke down last year.

I'd throw McNair in there.  He's a bit of a tweener that even on the Ravens could offer some good value.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I'll second this motion, especially if he's reunited with his old pal Mason. Clayton showed some skill late in the season and Williams is pencilled in as #3 currently. Let's not forget about Heap either.A guy that I think is on the borderline of front line QBs that may well be overlooked is Kurt Warner. I haven't seen an ADP for QBs yet, but I'm guessing he's around 15 or below. If that's the case, he's tremendous value that late. Adding Edge to the mix should help keep him upright more often by adding the threat of a running game as well as the added bonus of probably being the best blocking RB in the game.

Would have been Carr if they got Bush, but without a real threat in the running game defenses will be able to stay back in coverage once again and let DD get his 3-4 yard carries.

Aaron Brooks is a guy who i'll be targeting in all my re-drafts.

I's rather have McNair or Brooks way before any of these guys in response to previous posts. Roethlisberger too.

But this is a damn good question (just look at the votes)... here's to hoping I don't have to decide!

Phillip River's situation couldn't be better

A top 5 RB with amazing hands.

A top 2 TE with amazing hands.

That's all I'd need as an NFL qb coming into his first season.

I like Brooks, but am anxious to see where he falls in redrafts. I will also watch the job in Detroit to see if McCown can get a shot there as he would post nice numbers on the ground on a fast field with his speed.

Billy Volek anyone?  I also like Roethlisberger if he is a "bargain".

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Ben is a good NFL qb , but a worthless FFL qb .AT most he will throw 20 TD's.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
whoa, i wouldn't call big ben worthless...the guy came up pretty big in a few games, not to mention he was also injured/playing hurt for a few games also. will volek get any playing time tho with vince young??

might have to go with warner...they play san fran, st louis twice, and they also play green bay, lions, and the chiefs.

Id go with experience with Brad Johnson, did a good job last season and closely watched will be Carr, he may finally have the yr Texans would expect him too... if he doesnt get sacked 100 times.

The only ones up there I like at all are Carr, Grossman and Rivers.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
If Dilfer does move on I think Frye is a better cantidate than Grossman.I'm kind of surprised just how few people have chosen Frye. It'll be his team from week #1 - week #17 unless they pick up Kerry Collins.

CHI finished second to last in the league in passing last season and with the cream-puff schedule their staring at this season I wouldn't be at all surprised if those #'s drop. Benson should be that much better this year allowing them to lean even more heavily on the run. Lastly, Griese is a better QB than Grossman so there's always the chance he takes over at some point during the season. They won't stick with a guy just because he's winning, they want the best passer in the game they have. They proved that last season with Orton.

My picks:

1) Carr

2) Rivers

3) Frye

the rest

z) Pennington

The only 2 on that list that have any kind of potential to be a top 12 QB are Kitna and Grossman, IMHO.

Many of them will be servicable, but none are at all likely to provide more than QB2 numbers

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
If you sub in his three AFC playoff games for the three regular season games he missed, he threw 24 TDs. Guy is capable of some amazing spurts of production. Would be a really nice QB to own cheaply in a best ball league. Also, without a decent 1-2 RB option this year (Duce could change this or that 7th round RB), I see Ben having to throw a tad more.

I'm basing this assumption on McNair being gone and Fisher bringing Young along the same way he brought McNair along. Pretty sure Fisher made it clear very early on that McNair would not be playing at all in year 1.He started Chris frigging Chandler over McNair the first two years. I see Volek as at least that good.

I don't really see what relevance last years passing numbers for Chi have. They didn't have Grossman and were stuck with a far below average rookie QB who the team was scared to even let throw the ball.

Keep the replies coming, folks.

This thread is particularly interesting for those of us planning to enter the Fantasy Jungle leagues where you can start two quarterbacks (one as a flex) if you wish.

Does Kurt Warner not fall into the category of 'Economy QB'? I think that he's in for a pretty good year this year.

Billy Volek anyone?  I also like Roethlisberger if he is a "bargain".

Quiet you. I'm hoping Ben falls due to this misconception.

Ben = "lock" (as much as there can be one) for top 10 QB for 2006, possibly top 6.

I'll gladly pair McNair and Ben this year if they fall far enough.

But, the combo I have right now and like a lot is Ben, Brunell/Campbell

er Delhomme will (should) not be available late rounds.

Not sure offhand but surprised how few took Pennington. Yeah health issues and all, but he's produced before and has a much-improved line (I think even as rooks these guys will do fairly well).

Rivers I like more NFL-wise than FF-wise but he's a possibility. He will be somewhat erratic as he takes his lumps and they lean on LT, etc more.

Carr is the one I don't get. Unless I missed a nice draft pick or FA, they've done diddly to upgrade that pathetic line so no thanks. Getting Moulds is nice, but he's on his downside and it's hard to get passes to him (or anyone else) flat on one's back. Plus is A Johnson "rebounding" or what? etc.

But I'm most amazed that any DET, SF or CHI QB gets any votes :X

With Martz, Roy, Pollard, BMW, you're surprised that Kitna would get votes?I'm not sure I'd consider him a value in most leagues, seems a lot of people will peg him as a sleeper, so someone grabs him early. But, he has top 10 FF potential if he keeps the job.

David Carr- I think he is going to be so much better this season that people will see why he was picked #1. He has some good weapons, great coaches and the offensive line will finally give him some time. Philip Rivers- Will be solid, not great but solid. I think he will actually have a better season than Brees, just my opinion, but anyone who has LT and Gates to dump the ball off to can succeed. This guy has some major talent of his own as well and he has had full seasons to sit and watch and learn and now a full training camp as the starter.

Chris Simms- I hated this guy when he was at Texas but he is surprising. If Clayton can go back to his rookie form and not last years, this guy could be a solid sleeper. I dont think he will ever be a 300 YPG type guy though.

Charlie Frye- A lot of people are down on him but I think he showed some signs of talent last season. If he can get all of his weapons on the field at once, he could be a solid #2 fantasy QB.

Brad Johnson- Good vet with some WR that could really surprise this season. Koren Robinson is a stud when he has his head in the game. We will see if Troy Williamson can step it up. Johnson also has one of the most underrated TE in the game in Jermaine Wiggins.

Jon Kitna- Martz has done more with less. Kitna is could be as talented as Trent Green, Kurt Warner and Marc Bulger in my opinion with a guy like Martz teaching him.

Alex Smith- Not yet. Two years from now I think this guy is going to be fantasy top 15 but not yet.

Rex Grossman- Is he going to beat Griese out for the spot? Is he going to make it through two weeks without getting hurt? I think this guy has tremendous talent but he just cant stay healthy. I would be hard pressed to take a chance on him.

Chad Pennington- Unless he gets a bionic shoulder transplant like the six million dollar man, I am staying far away from this guy.
