Xavier Adibi (1 Viewer)

Latest I heard anything was May 23rd (Rotoworld, source Houston Chronicle):

"Texans rookie LB Xavier Adibi (hamstring) is expected back on the field for next week's OTAs.

The team is being extra cautious with Adibi who has a chance to start as a rookie as long as he can stay healthy."

I truly like Adibi long-term in that I see him being >>>>>>>> than Greenwood. However, I have a hard time judging his short term success. Anyone with any homer insight or otherwise enlightened views regarding this?

If Adibi unseats Greenwood, it won't be a result of pure talent. Unfortunately for Greenwood, he's carrying a steep price tag the next two seasons ($4.0mm in '08 and $4.8mm in '09). When the Texans feel comfortable with another WLB on their roster (Adibi or other LB), I'm assuming Greenwood will be cut for cap purposes.

You may be right WD, and I do appreaciate Greenwood as an underrated player (at least for FF IDP purposes). However, in terms of talent I don't view them as equal, from what I've seen of Adibi at VT he seems to have a much better football sense (I see him as a bit DeMeco Ryanesque really, key word a bit though). I realize the NFL hardly compares to the VT games and there is a transition period, but I feel it's going to be short. WD, you appear to view it differently (as in Greenwood being superior to Adibi), and I'm curious to hear why?

Even though Greenwood doesn't get much press, he's actually a very solid LB. In fact, before signing his big deal (well, big at the time) with the Texans, Greenwood was a multi-position player for the Dolphins. Greenwood played on the strong-side for the Fins and was surprisingly efficient (100+ tackles in '04). The Texans brought him aboard in '05 and Greenwood has silently notched 3 straight 100+ tackle seasons. Oh, yeah...if it matters anymore, Greenwood was originally a 3rd-rounder. For reference, Adibi was a 4th-rounder.I believe Adibi is probably at least 1-2 seasons away from starting, and there's probably a 50/50 chance he becomes nothing more than a situational player for most his career.

If I may add...Every year we hear about mid-round players who are the "next in line to start". For LB's in '07, it was Quincy Black as the heir apparent to Derrick Brooks, Stephen Nicholas as the replacement for Demorrio Williams, Michael Okwo for Lance Briggs, etc. In '06, it was James Anderson replacing Will Witherspoon. You can probably allow another owner to roster Adibi for the next 1-2 years and acquire him cheaper at that time. Plus, you can keep a roster spot open for a player who has a better chance to contribute in the near-term.

This has to be the best LB group Houston has ever had. If Adbi was to start this year, I would think it’s not likely to be at Greenwood’s expense. Maybe they move Greenwood over to “Sam”. Texans beat writer John McClain says … “Adibi is going to line up behind Greenwood, but the Texans' linebackers are interchangeable, which means if Adibi plays well enough, he could get time on the other side.”

I’ve read Houston likes Zac Diles, they also have Chaun Thompson, Kevin Bentley and of course now Roosevelt Colvin, Colvin will probable be a situational pass-rusher. Ultimately I think experience will probably win out, but Adibi’s speed and playmaking ability may be too intriguing to keep him on the sidelines.

I agree with WD, in respect to Greenwood possibly being a cap casualty down the road. He will be 31 by the time the 2009 season rolls around, unless he feels he has another big pay day left in him, I suppose a restructured deal is not out of the question.

Interesting. There are a lot of LB'ers down there so anything's possible, but still think it'll be next year. I wouldn't mind being wrong though.

Adibi is a solid talent, and I've watched a lot of VT football.

He's a physical player with good side to side range, and also good instincts and a nose for the ball. He can cover TEs and isn't a 3rd down liability.

All that said, I would expect that he is the 4th LB and Greenwood's backup. Should he prove to be solid enough to unseat him, I think he is the 2009 starter for the lower pricetag.

 I've had to watch alot of him as a Miami fan and I could agree more with this assessment.

I definitely would not call Greenwood "showcased," but he is a good solid #3 LB. I don't see Adibi taking the job from him for at least this year, but Adibi is someone to stash on your TS if you have one.
