Bears Camp Opens Wednesday... (1 Viewer)

GRIDIRON ASSASSIN

I'll let you know what I see at Bears Camp. I'm a bit pissed, because I want to go during Week 2 (as this week will be stretching, etc. etc. etc exercises).

But they'll run 8/8 passing drills for sure.

I'm sure Booker is probably going to be #1WR - and they'll throw a bomb now and again to Lloyd, and some slant passes to Hester to placate the meatball Bear fans.

I hope rookie OLT Chris Williams signs soon...

please tell us how hester looks at wr.

And if Lloyd's take snaps with the #1's, bring a football with you and start playing catch with someone. Instead of catching the ball each time, just duck.

I'll be in Shadow Lakes (Braidwood) next week, and I'm hoping to make it down to camp either Wedneday nite or Thursday afternoon. Any word what day they will be doing autographs for the kids? I'll have my 5 y/o nephew in tow and will have to make a stop at the kid's area.

And keep up the good work with the trip reports. I enjoyed your commentary last year.

If Peyton does miss the entire pre-season, I have a tough time thinking he will be on point week one.

just finished an online WCOFF league, 12 teams, 20 rounds. Booker is the only Bears' WR drafted.....at 20.08 :banned: no QBs :pokey:

Enjoy the game from the seats you can afford! ;)
 Those are reserved for the visiting fans. If you lean left, you'll see Hester running a fly pattern. Then lean right and you'll be able to get a glimpse of Orton's pass falling short.
Nice stadium. Those seat shouldn't even be there, it should be a standing area for the hillbillies that show people to their seats (since most hoosiers can't figure out simple math (of adding and subtracting a row, and/or a seat)

Where in the hell was Hester??? I just drafted him, of course... :goodposting:
Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports Chicago Bears WR/KR Devin Hester was a no-show for the start of training camp Wednesday, July 23. Hester is seeking a new contract.

OK guys.... long day. A 10 and 12 year old son away from mom and out with dad requires a lot of special bonding time, and lots of fast food.

In a nutshell:

Attendance was much lower than I expected. Only about 100 people in line to get in at 1:45PM. Then again, last year they were coming off a Super Bowl appearance.

VERY disappointed to hear Devin Hester was a no show.

VERY concerned about center Olin Kreutz having an achilles issue. I did see him signing autographs for kids after practice, and while he wasn't moving around too fast, I didn't see him dragging a leg, or with ice on anything. He also golfed yesterday with three other guys, and they were the first ones to camp - so I think the Bears are just being cautious.

Disappointed again to hear that 2nd year DE Dan Bazuin and and 3rd year DT Dusty Dvorcak weren't participating.

Lame decision to flip a coin to see who worked with the first team at QB. From what I saw - both QBs are in exceptional shape - when working on passing drills (with no defenders) Orton's ball had a lot more zip on it, and accuracy than Rex's.

WRs: Marty Booker was the only guy in long sweats, all other players were in shorts. At first I though he wasn't practicing either, but he was - I read this morning that Hester and Lloyd were the first string WRs, and I was a bit shocked (I thought it would be Lloyd and Booker). Now I guess it's Bradley and Lloyd. Marty Booker looks old. Sure handed, but old. When being interviewed by ESPN1000's Mac, Jurko and Harry he stated he didn't know who the starters were now, or who they'd be when the season started, but all WRs would contribute, and he will as well, whether it's as the 1st, 2nd or 3rd WR on the team. He looked ancient getting up after the interview. VERY achy and slow. The other WRs looked good today - Bradley was catching everything, Lloyd, Davis and the others as well. Marcus Monk, Brandon Lloyd and Earl Bennett did nothing to stand out, but also didn't drop any accurately thrown balls. Monk is all legs, and they are rail thin. Booker had an awesome one handed catch during passing drills against the defense.

Earl Bennett was returning punts in Hester's absence. Very sure handed, didn't drop one ball and looked very natural. I'm not sure he's the long term answer there though - perhaps Hester caught the Bears by surprise, as I know Garrett Wolfe, Rashied Davis and Danieal Manning can all return punts also.

TEs: Rookie TE Kellen Davis is a ginormous guy. He appeared to be a half foot taller than Desmond Clark in one on one blocking drills (with bags). If this guy puts on a bit more weight in his ###, he'll be a helluva blocker. He and Clark looked about the same blocking - and Olsen appeared to be a good receiver when he attempted to block (if you know what I mean). Kellen Davis also had a couple of impressive catches in passing drills against the defense too.

RBs: There's no hitting, so it's really kind of tough to judge anything. Forte looked like he ran too upright. If they were hitting, that would probably change. Hell, if they were hitting, a lot would be different. Kevin Jones is built like a brick ####house. I think he was running around the side track prior to practice, but it was hard to tell, as the guy running had no jersey on, and sweats. Jones was seen walking out on the practice field towards the end with a knee brace on - and ice on the knee. So I'm sure he did something to work out today.

Jason McKie looked awesome - and I'm not a big fan of fullbacks anymore. He looked like a freight train on the FB draw play. He made a couple of nice catches on poorly thrown balls by... uh... #8 - and looked smooth on the passes thrown to the flat which hit him in the chest by ... uh #18.

Garrett Wolfe looked small and quick. Adrian Peterson looked like Adrian Peterson - sure handed, with good balance and consistant as all hell.

Defense: For the most part, they were on the far side of the field and I didn't see too much of them today. In the passing drills at the end of practice, the thing that stood out to me was the fact that I didn't really recognize too many guys. Vasher and Brown for sure. RMJ and Danieal Manning did nothing to stand out. Nutty Tillman wasn't there - some pre-excused family issue kept him out. While watching the youngsters: Payne and Steltz were playing safety on a lot of the drills that I caught, and they looked quick - but Steltz looked a bit tentative. I don't know his physical specs but he's wearing Archuleta's #20, and seems much bigger than Archuleta, and running looks more natural to him. Who knows, time will tell.

Like I said guys, I'm bummed I didn't get to see more defensive work today - I'm going to go out of my way to check it out more tomorrow.

Robbie Gould was missing on his long FG attempts (only a few) and was dead on with everything inside the 35 yard line.

Autographs for the kids (for what it's worth). Tommie Harris is quite the ham. Very funny guy - and the fans love him. He'd stand in the middle of the gauntlet that the players walk through, and depending on which side could scream his name out the loudest he'd go there. Young 10 year old Zak got Tommie Harris, Ogunleye, Tait, Booker and Chris Williams to sign his ball. He plays O-line and D-line in Pee Wee Football, so good for him. 12 year old Mad Max could have cared less (this was his 9th camp) and was more pre-occupied in getting a side-by-side banana/chocolate shake at Steak and Shake. God bless his heart, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

So who won the coin toss? Hell of a way to pick your 1st team QB.
 The Bears can't win. It may look stupid but Lovie made a smart move. If he would have appointed Rex as the starter for today, everyone would be complainig saying that they knew all along that it would not be a fair open competition like Lovie said it would be. If Orton got the nod, then everyone would say that he was doing that just to make Rex look better against the second team.

Even as a diehard, love the move by Hester. very very smart move for him personally (financially)

He's their best offensive weapon. Everyone knows that. The Bears are in no position to low ball him.

LOW BALL him? He's under contract for two more years, and then they can slap the tag on him twice.I think they can get something done - he's envious of all the money being thrown around to Urlacher, Tommie Harris, and hell... even kicker Robbie Gould. He's not a #1, nor a #2 WR, so he'd best not get too greedy. Hell, he had to have other WRs help him line up in the right spot several times last season. We all saw how quickly 'the human joystick' Dante Hall's performance fell off the map after he started getting nicked up.

Cast of slugs at WR for the Bears = Hester's gain.

Really glad myself Hester's doing this with the lack of emphasis being placed by this franchise on offense.

That's awesome. I sure your sons are stoked and will always have that memory of meeting Tommie. Dang, I drove by Olivet with my nephew on my way to Menards to pick up some building materials this afternoon, but I didn't have time to stop. Now I'm bummed. Thanks for the update.

They've both got good memories of Bears Camp - the youngest has met Charles Tillman on and off the field - and has a #33 'Peanut' jersey. Last year he had a football with only two autographs: Mike Brown and Brian Urlacher

The youngest one was 4 years old when (up at Platteville's Training Camp) he asked Olin Kreutz "If you from Hawaii why aren't you wearing a grass skirt?" - to the amusement of his teammates nearby - as Olin is supposed to be (and is) a tough guy. Tony Parrish also made Max 'hold his helmet' to get an autograph.

As a dad, I just hope to forge lasting memories - and if they're built around a 'free' training camp - then so be it. After all, I want them to have some football related memory besides me cussing Rex Grossman up and down during the 2007 Super Bowl.

You're right he's not a #1, but they made him the #1, hence the reason he wants #1 money.

Thanx for the report Grid. Hope you can tell us how the DTs other than Harris look, especially the 3rd round pick. Curious on how Bowman looks as well.

Get ready to watch the worst offense in football. There isn't a single skill player on that team who would start for anyone else, besides Olsen.

Thanks to Grid for the updates. For those of us too impatient to wait for the detailed write-up each day. Here's a link to the ST blog. Looks like OT Williams missed time today with a back injury. Hope it's nothing serious.

SunTimes

The Chicago Sun-Times reports Bears first-round draft pick OT Chris Williams left the practice field during a one-on-one pass-rushing drill. He was taken to the training tent and then to the locker room and HC Lovie Smith revealed he has a back injury. It's not how the Bears wanted things to start with their prized selection. ''We'll always err in favor of the players, but it was to the point where he couldn't practice,'' HC Lovie Smith said. ''When I say there is some stiffness, I don't know exactly how much, but he couldn't practice. The guys know there's a difference between pain and injury. It seems like his was more of an injury.'' No word on the seriousness of it. Undrafted free agent OT Cody Balogh worked with the second team after Williams departed.
Great start for the rookie!!

:goodposting:Not a chance that the Bears end up #32 in all major offensive statistics. Bottom half, yes, but definitely not the worst. You'll see... Now $TFU and take your negativism elsewhere.

Now he probably wishes he held out for more cash... ;)

Actually the Bears starting WRs wouldn't make many teams in the NFL, leave alone start.

There was an interview with Williams tonight and he said it was muscle craps and they were just being cautious with him.

If it was a real game, he would have played through it. He did say he never had this problem before. He probably didn't drink enough fluids before practice.

Damn - sorry it's taken so long for an update.... I left camp at 4:30, it was a long drive home, I had to mow my old man's lawn, as he's recovering from back surgery and that took 2.5 hours.

Then I had to stop at Hooters with the boys to cap off the two days of "MAN TIME". Of course we got the worst looking waitress, with the hottest body though. I guess you can't have it all.

Here's the skinny:

Once again I didn't get to see too many defensive drills. Whichever side of the field I pick is the wrong side. But I heard that 3rd round DT Marcus(?) Harrison is starting to stand out in camp - great speed and snap anticipation in drills.

RB observations: Forte appears to be the real deal - he's running a little high still, but this will change when he gets his clock cleaned. At times he ran into a pile of bodies, but he squirted out (then again, people were 'tagging' instead of tackling, so I don't know if you can take too much away from it) McKie was catching anything thrown in his general direction and the boring FB draw was present again. A-Pete was A-Pete - solid but nothing out of the ordinary.

QB observations: Lovie Smith spent most of his day watching the QBs - over Ron Turner's shoulder. Orton again was throwing a nice ball, precise and with mustard on it. Rex's short passes were floating, but he was hitting the downfield rainbows nicely.

TE observations: Desmond Clark was his usual consistent self, catching nice downfield seam routes a few times. I didn't see too much from the other guys.

WR observations: As mentioned yesterday, Bennett was on the punt return team - as the returner. He must have cut off a route or something today, as the coach was up in his grill. He pretty much caught everything thrown to him other than that. The other WRs were pretty consistent, except for one Mark Bradley - who also got an earful for running a wrong route, and for not diving for a ball near the sidelines. Not a good day for #16 to say the least.

O-Line/D-Line: While walking back to check out one drill, I saw Mark Anderson pick off a pass, but didn't see what led up to it. Dan Bazuin was regularly getting ridden out of plays by #69, whoever the hell that is. (Kirk Barton, rookie OT from Ohio State). Once again Dusty Dvorcak was sidelined. As all of you know by now Chris Williams got hurt today. He said it was a tightening in his lower back. Trainer Tim Bream took the cautious route and pulled him from the rest of practice. Williams said if there was a game tomorrow he'd be playing. Time will tell, as there were rumors of a 'narrowing of the spine' on Williams in the week or so leading up to the draft.

Returns: Nate Vasher and Earl Bennett were alternating punt return duties today.

DBs... Rookie Craig Steltz should have had an INT when Bradley screwed up a route, but he and another defender collided. Kevin Payne got burnt badly on a long pass to Rashied Davis (I believe). Payne was supposed to roll out and help the CB and got a bad jump after slow recognition. 2nd year player Corey Graham was playing well also. Ricky Mannning Jr. is steamed that he's on the 3rd team now.

Robbie Gould again was nailing the kicks under 45, but anything longer than that 45-50 yard range, he was struggling on.

Injured guys:

Olin Kreutz was suited up today (with no pads though) and didn't participate - nor did Dusty. I just read on the Trib website that Nutty Tillman was at dinner tonight, so he should participate tomorrow.

Once again Paula Faris of NBC5 Chicago was looking mighty hot on the sidelines. She just had a kid and her kid is darned lucky. She's filled out nicely upstairs and lost the baby weight down below.

Another sideline sight - Brian Urlacher's butt-buddy - the 5 cubic foot Jay Glazer. WTF... the guy looked like he was ready for a UFC fight. Is this guy a 'journalist' or a bodybuilder. At first I thought it was a dwarfified Chris Zorich.

Most troublesome to me: While everybody focuses on the Devin Hester saga - the fact that the best offensive linemen (Olin Kreutz) isn't practing and OLT Chris Williams was out with back spasms is quite troublesome. Without an O-Line, who cares who the QB Derby winner is, and screw Devin Hester at WR.
