Chris Perry: Time to pull the plug? (1 Viewer)

I have been rostering Chris Perry for two years now on a 25 man dynasty roster and am wondering if it's time to cut my losses on him. I loved him at michigan, thought he was too talented not to eventually beat out rudi, and ultimately would become a top player in the league a la tiki barber/marshall faulk with his great receiving ability. Cincy obviously has no faith in him as they have drafted irons in the 2nd and look to be phasing Perry out. I think it's safe to assume his time in cincy will soon be at an end. But, my question to the board is, lets assume perry does manage to come back and stay healthy. Would some team out there even entertain the idea of turning the reins over to CP or would they always try to keep him in a reduced role for fear of injury? If the answer to that question is no, i think i can move on to dropping perry for a guy like cecil sapp who may be the #2 in denver. It's just a shame because Perry had, and may still have, the ability to be a franchise player IF.....

Since you have held him this long, I would wait and see what happens this year, if your league is deep. There is no way of knowing anything until he gets on the field and plays. The Bengals drafted a Rb because of Perry being hurt, not because of talent. He may not play, and may not be much of a factor if he does, but I think it is still too soon to give up. If you have the roster space, I'd keep him for the time being. I believe he will start the season on the PUP list. After he is eligible to come off the list, you will have a better idea. I have to think if he is healthy that he will get some playing time. That's my opinion on this. It really comes down to roster needs.

IMO, any first round RB is worth keeping on your roster until he's out of football. Remember Tyrone Wheatley, Antowain Smith, and Thomas Jones? They were all pretty worthless at one point in their careers. Perry has time to get healthy and turn it around.

Pull the plug... michigan has a track record of producing quality rbs in college who do very little in the pros. On top of that the bengals added kenny irons....chris perry is not going to do anything for you

Perry's had some bad luck. It's tough to see a guy be unproductive for two years in a row, but I wouldn't write him off. There has been no indication of any lasting damage, and basically, we just haven't seen what this guy can do in the NFL. I say hod him, though of course, I'd have to know what other RB prospects you could replace him with - Irons has more value than Perry at this point, I'd say.

Is it an IDP league? If so, I can see why you may want to and honestly should consider letting him go. But if it is not, I would hold onto him. I assume that in a 25 roster league you have 7-8 RBs rostered. Even if it is a 10 team league, 70-80 RBs will be rostered. I can't think of 80 or even 70 other RBs I would rather have than Perry.

I feel your pain, as I've had Perry on a significant contract ($20 out of a $500 salary cap) for the past two years. His tantalizing potential has always kept me hanging on.

Don't give up on him now. I'm not going to. There is no way Rudi Johnson plays a full season this year, after the pounding he has taken over the past few years (and I mean it this year!). Every NFL team nowadays wants two backs that can start and/or share carries in order to minimize the likelihood and impact of injuries on their top back(s). So at least one of the two between Irons and Perry will be a servicable bench RB this year and will be a fantasy stud the minute Rudi goes down. I've read that Irons isn't the greatest pass catcher. That and his inexperience will give Perry the inside track to play on 3rd downs, despite his injury troubles. And beyond 2007, expect Rudi to start to fade and Perry and/or Irons to begin emerge as the workhorse back.

If Chris Perry gets hurt again this year after he comes off the PUP in Week 5, well, then I can no longer defend the guy and he will be waiver wire fodder.

It is quite bold to say that Rudi wont make it through the year. He's proven to be quite durable.I have Rudi, Irons, and Perry, and have been sitting on Perry for 3 years now. His value cannot be any lower, and yet, until he's out of the league he is a guy I plan to hang on to if I can. He has a unique recieving ability that makes him a 'must-play' guy no matter who is in front of him. THis means that he simply needs to stay healthy, which you have to believe is going to happen sooner or later.

Perry netted over 600 total yards in 2005. He was injured in 04 and 06. In deep leagues, he just might be a good "buy-low". I assume OCC is joking, but he does have RB2 level talent, maybe better, and the Bengals are a great place for RBs.

I am also hanging onto Perry for one more year. I think he is a free agent after this season, so I'm curious to know what happens next off season. If the Bengals cut their losses, I'd like to see if he gets any any Turner-esque love from another NFL team. He'd be damaged goods, but you never know. It's worth one more roster spot for this season. My two cents.

Does anyone know of any good websites to view the contract status of players? If Perry is indeed a FA at the end of the year, i could certainly afford to hang onto him for one more year and hope for the best

He is either signed thru 2008 or 2009. I have seen different reports on various sights.

nflpa.com says 2009, thats what i would go by.

15 keeper dynasty league, but with IDP. I have kept Peery 2 years. If he does nothing this season I don't think I can keep him. Most have said they would in a 25 man keeper, what about 15?

p.s. I am also holding Turner!

It's not a dynasty league if you can only keep part of your roster. No way would I keep him in a keeper league.

even though this thread belongs in the assistant coach forum i will humor you...

flat out...dropping chris perry for someone like cecil sapp is silly...

chris perry does have skills, cinci knows it, otherwise he wouldn't still be there...he was a first round pick, gained a school-record at Michigan with 2041 yards from scrimmage in his senior season, totaling 1674 rushing and 367 receiving on 44 catches...along with 20 tds...

his celling is 50 times higher than Sapps, a free agent signee out of what might as well be Suny Binghamton....

and besides, any rb that has 14 tackles on special teams the past few years (sapp) is not going to ever crack your line-up...period...

you know it, and i know it...lets just be honest with ourselves...and move on....

-------------------------------

as for Perry's situation in bengal country...time will tell...and maybe he will have to get a change of scenery to become effective, Irons does have some skills as well...however until he heals up properly we are not going to know...you have already held onto him for 2 years...its not going to kill you for one more....and if he does start producing, how much are you going to kick yourself for cutting ties with him for 2rd string Spring OTA "might just be motivating mike bell" rb Denver? (and if sapp produces something special, you can always hawk the waiver wire at 3 AM and snag him, because no one else even knows he exists)

Raymond Christopher Perry, "the chessmaster" is your man...keep him...

It kind of depends on the other players available but at this point I think I might take a flier on someone else.

CP has all the potential in the world but just can not stay healthy.

Well this thread is something i didn't want to see.

I just traded Perry and Tony Gonzo(non TE req.) for JP Losman. I'm starting to feel seller's remorse.

21 roster spots. 14 teams.

for me, it was a combo of factors.

1. Injuries...I don't even think he's a lock to start the season. Again missing games.

2. Kenny Irons...This guy is no slouch. Not the pass catcher out of the backfield that Perry is, but a very good SEC RB.

3. Losman...I really needed a backup QB with upside for this year. I like JP's learning curve. With him, Lynch and Lee Evans we might be seeing the rebirth of the Bills.

Perry could come back and bite me. I went out and traded for him last year (reggie williams) and I was going to hold him, but my team is ready to make a run now. Obviously I think he's not going to rebound from all the injuries. We'll see.

Ok not a dynasty but it is 14 teams with 22 on each roster and we keep 15. Thats 210 players rostered at all times, it may as well be a dynasty league. I was thinking it is time to let him go, I might cut him before the season even bigins since he is going on the PUP and only having 7 bench players I don't have alot of leway.

I don't own him in any league, but what about a 20 man roster 12 or 14 team league? Roster spots sure are hard to spare in those types of leagues. I'm in 2 leagues with 20 man rosters, one being a 12 team league (Champagne Classic) and the other a 14 team league (MOX 1), and Perry has been rostered since he was drafted. However, in the 14 team league TEs aren't required, so that helps teams roster more RBs.

Is it that bold to say any NFL RB has a high likelihood of missing games? Rudi's fortitude has blown me away the past few years and I have to give props where props are due. Plus, that Bengals line is solid. But sooner or later, the violence of this game catches up with just about everyone, especially RBs. It's not that big of a surprise to see the Bengals draft Irons, nor will it be shocking to see Irons or Perry rotate in for entire series this year in addition to 3rd downs, and/or actually start games to keep/get Rudi healthy.

Pull the plug... michigan has a track record of producing quality rbs in college who do very little in the pros.
So does Penn State, so you better drop Larry Johnson, while you're at it.Trends are nice and all, but have very little bearing when you're examining the merits of individual players on a case-by-case basis.

Bengals homer here. Hang on to Perry ALAP - the team's got to make some kind of move soon. Kenny Watson is in the mix, and did a great job for them last year. They love Irons - he's not only talented, but evidently high-character, which is much needed. No reason to think Rudi's slowing down, so I think they're going to have to move Perry somehow.

Fantasy football is all about buying a player when their value is low, and selling when high (or keeping them if they are productive for you). Perry's value could be at an all-time low, so you should definitely hold on to him. Also, in dynasty leagues it is very important to identify talent/potential, and to value it over situation. I would keep him on your 25 player roster until he is out of the league.

I made this mistake with Ahman Green last year, early season i had a feeling he would make it back and i signed him; yet I still traded him in late Summer because the general consensus of old, injured. One year later, now with Houston; his value is 3x what it was.

:goodposting:  :lmao: Thank you for being the voice of reason. The most ridiculous argument out there is that the last X number of RBs from University Z failed so this one will too. It's just silly.

I don't think you'll get much argument here...though the trick is to recognize when a player is a BUY low, and when a player is a STAY low. That's the point of the thread, I believe. Count me as one who sees Perry as a STAY low. Sure, he's talented, and it's tough letting go of a guy who'd give you so many receiving yards if he were ever the #1 guy. But he's under contract with the Bengals through (please correct me if I'm wrong) 2008, and I can't see them out-right cutting him. For this year, they're talking about starting him on the PUP list again, and by the time he's back, he's likely #3 unless Irons shows nothing. When his contract is done, does he get a chance somewhere else? Two words for you: Chris Brown. No one gives him the top job -- perhaps 2 years from now he's some team's cheap 1-year flier, in competition with the young stud said team *wants* to win the job. Are you going to hold on to him with such prospects? I like him, I've owned him for a couple years now...but I'm thinking it's time to cut my losses and make room for someone else.

A lot of good points have made in this thead, but in the end, I tend to agree with this last post. If I had more space, I would keep Perry simply because he does have amazing talent. But after three years of injuries, it is really hard to see him being capable of staying healthy and it is hard to imagine another team giving him a chance to be a featured back. I doubt anyone inmy 12 team, 22 roster league would pick him up off waivers at this time.

It's not just about buying a player when his value is LOW, it's about buying when it's at the LOWEST and is going to increase. For instance, Barry Sanders' value is pretty low right now, but I have no interest in trading for him because his value isn't going to increase. Michael Vick's value was pretty low a couple of days ago but trading for him would have been a mistake because it wasn't at its lowest yet.

Another good point, here. If you've held onto him for any stretch, it's likely you've got him more highly valued than just about everyone else in your league. If the guy hasn't appeared in a box score in a couple of years, many folks are thinking "Chris who?" No one will pick him up right away, and you can pluck him back off the WW if there's any sniff of a revival.

Another factor to consider that Perry may start the 2007 season on the PUP according to Marv Lewis. Assuming he starts on the PUP, this gives Irons and Watson the opportunity to be the change of pace RB and starting RB if Rudi is out for some reason. I don't know much about Irons, but I don't think Cinci's drafting of Irons is an indictment of Perry's talent, it's more about finding quality talent to field. However, I've followed Watson since his Redskins days, and he tends to stay healthy and I think he'd perform admirably as Rudi's replacement. Putting this all together, I think Perry starts 07 unfortunately on the PUP and will not get significant playing time until 2008, assuming he makes it to the 2008 training camp healthy for a change.

The bottom line here is that you should be willing to roster Perry through 2008 if you keep him now, otherwise trade/drop him to make space for someone who is usable now. I'll disclose that I'm in a similar position with Perry, but we have a different roster structure, so keeping Perry is a much easier decision for me.

from Bengals.com

Reiterating what he said last week about running back Chris Perry, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis on Wednesday left open the possibility that Perry could be healthy enough to put on the 53-man roster at the start of the season. Lewis said Perry is progressing quicker than anticipated from surgery for a dislocated ankle.
