Anyone know the status of PK Kris Brown? I thought I heard earlier in the offseason he may not be brought back.

He's in camp and will be in competition with Rackers to be the kicker in 2010. I doubt we will find out the result of that competition for several weeks.

Looking forward to going to open practice sunday and monday
Do you mind posting your observations?
Observations on Owen Daniels would be very helpful. Nice value at Rd 7.9 if healthy.

What do you think is a good time to grab him in redrafts? TE#6 off the board? TE#10? Curious on your opinion CN, thanks.

Everything I am hearing is that he will be ready for the regular season. My strategy would be to try to grab him late TE 10 to 12 especially if I have pretty early redraft say before Aug 20 or so. My understanding is that he might play in the 3rd or 4th pre-season game if everything is progressing fine. My assumption is that once he plays it will be tough getting him past TE8.

Coach Gary Kubiak said that Owen Daniels had a setback in his rehab from ACL surgery.

We're not sure about the exact nature of the setback or when it occurred, but this could explain why Daniels' recovery is taking longer than expected. He tore his ACL in Week 8 and doesn't appear close to the field right now. Wes Welker tore his in Week 17 and he's already practicing. You shouldn't be counting on Daniels as your starting fantasy tight end.

http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/38509619/sports/player_newsyou have been on top of these things..Right now non of the normal Texan specific links have anything different

I'm actually looking forward to seeing what Jacoby Jones can do this season. Had flashes of greatness last season, but was erratic and needs to work on doing the little things well. But if he can put it together I think he can be an excellent receiver in this league.

Talking with guys on a Houston message board, no one has seen a direct quote anywhere from Kubiak and the original place that the word setback was used in the Mort report.

Kubiak's press conference on Saturday

(on TE Owen Daniels' status for the opening game of the regular season) "I haven't changed my mindset at all. That decision will be made down the road. All of our focus is for him to get ready for the Colts. As I said yesterday, we are going to know a lot more about Owen in the next two weeks. His rehab looks good. He's picked it up and I've been watching him every morning. I think Owen is a warrior as long as I've been around. So if anyone is going to make it to that spot, then he has an excellent chance. So we'll be smart with him."

(on TE Owen Daniels' progress in rehab) "I think what we are trying to find out right now is how he will respond to the increased level of rehab. He's doing more football stuff. We'll have a new response in the next few weeks."

The sunday press chat had no questions about Daniels...look like a false alarm here.

Couple quick hits:

-Andre blessed Kareem Jackson with a double move on first scrimmage play.

-Ben Tate looked good, runs with authority.

-Slaton looked quick, flashed some rookie year quickness (you could tell from the get go last year during TC that he lost a step)

-Casey was taking OD's reps in practice.

-I'm not a foster fan but he was 1st team.

-Schaub was very good today.

-Mario rode the bike this morning.

-If anybody is wondering, Cushing DID NOT get any smaller.

-If Schaub goes down, offense will be done. Dan O looked terrible.

-Glover Quinn made some plays.

-Holliday is ridiculously fast. Early fan favorite it seems.

-Jacoby Jones was not impressive. Fumbled a punt, had a drop.

-Graham (rookie TE) was catching everything thrown his way.

Thanks very much for this.

Full pads today:

-Foster looked much better today.

-Offense got the best of the defense.

-Skirmish between Pollard and the OL. (Pollard got mad at myers for something, stepped up to him. Winston came over there to back up Myers, Antonio Smith comes out of nowhere and tackles Winston to the ground, and I mean out of nowhere and hard. Pile up ensues)

-Booty>>>Orlovsky. I was all for the Orlovsky signing when it happened, but he is horrible.

-Tate got some first team reps today. Looked very good.

-Top 3 RBs look good. They all shared 1st team reps.

-They seem to be picking on Kareem a lot during TC.

-Again no Mario.

-Jacoby made some plays today.

-No TE's really stood out today.

This offense is a well oiled machine, as long as Schaub is driving.

jamil, and personal insight/feeling you have as to how the RB battle will shake out this season would be very interesting.

Pollard probably showed Myers a video of him getting tossed like a ragdog by Kris Jenkins on his iphone.

Good. Because you know Peyton Manning certainly will be come game 1 of the season.

(on lining up CB Kareem Jackson against WR Andre Johnson during practice) "You got to think about who we are getting him ready to play against. We are going to line up against number 80 (WR Andre Johnson) all day long. I'd told him in front of his teammates yesterday a lot of guys might get a false impressive where they're at as a player. You won't have when you come out this camp because you'll working against one of the best. That's what we got to get him ready to do."

The Texans made a move to bolster their depth at wide receiver on Monday, placing Glenn Martinez on the reserve/injured list and re-signing London Crawford.

Crawford (6-2, 203), a rookie receiver out of Arknasas, originally signed with the Texans in May as an undrafted free agent. He was released on June 16 after the Texans' three-day mini-camp.

Martinez injured his hamstring on Saturday and did not practice over the last two days. Rookie wide receiver Trindon Holliday also out with a hamstring injury and could miss a few more days of practice, and the Texans don't like to work Pro Bowler Andre Johnson when they practice indoors. Crawford will add another body to the mix as the team continues through training camp.

A four-year veteran, Martinez signed with the Texans in 2009. He played in seven games last season, returning six punts for 23 yards.

no its a crapshoot. they all rotated with 1st team today and all 3 looked good.and as for kareem, i agree. him and quin need all the reps against dre. it's just ridiculous how dre abuses everybody going against him. guy is a man among boys out there.eta: i didn't want hard knocks at first but now i wish they came to houston instead. it would be cool to see these guys personalities come out as they all seem likeable.

The Bills are reportedly going to release Aaron Schobel. John McClain was on 610 this morning saying he talked to Schobel 2 days ago and Schobel (who is from Columbus, Texas originally) said if he got released the Texans were at the top of his list. It would also reunite him with Texans d-line coach Bill Kollar who was his coach in Buffalo.

Of course someone could still come in and offer to pay him more, though since he chose to pass up an $8m salary in Buffalo, money can't be #1 in his priority list. But if he did come down here it would make for an interesting situation. What do you do on passing downs? Put Schobel and Barwin at the ends and move both Mario and Antonio Smith inside? Schobel is small but able to play the run... do you maybe move Smith inside full time?

It would definitely give the Texans lots of options in regards to the pass rush.

I think he would be a good signing in terms depth and maybe veteran leadership. Essentially he and Barwin are twin players separated by ten years of age. I think that he could give them real flexibility to move several guys around during passing downs. I would not want a pass set, but really several to cause offenses fits.

Any one back looking any better than the others?
foster looks to be entrenched as the #1 right now.
http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=6252(on if there is any separation being created in the running back position) "I would say that (RB) Arian (Foster) is definitely doing his job. He is having one heck of a camp. I think (RB) Steve Slaton have proven to his teammates that he's back. The young kid (RB Ben Tate) is kind of swimming. He shows you signs of doing very good things, but has a ways to go. The two other young men (RB Chris Henry and RB Jeremiah Johnson), probably special teams will separate them before it's all said and done. I think they're all doing on what I expected at this point

Well, that told me very little aside from Ben Tate seems to have a pretty uphill battle to start. If it's Foster and Slaton as a thunder-lightning that's not too bad. Anyone else getting anything from this quote?

At this point, he is not going to cement Foster as the clear number 1 starter with 300 carries, so you will have to take what's implied: foster 1, slaton 2, tate 3, and the other two fighting for a roster spot. He is not going to call anyone a starter until two to three pre-season games based on performance and injury.

Texans owner Bob McNair will meet with Roger Goodell in New York on Monday to try to persuade the NFL commissioner to reduce or overturn linebacker Brian Cushing’s four-game suspension.

Cushing was suspended for the first four games this season because he violated the league’s policy against performance-enhancing drugs by testing positive for hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), a banned substance that can be used to mask steroids.

A person with knowledge of Cushing’s situation said McNair will present new evidence to Goodell the owner hopes will shorten or eliminate the suspension that is costing the linebacker games against Indianapolis, Washington, Dallas and Oakland.

Goodell suspended Cushing and then rejected Cushing’s appeal in February.

Cushing, who can practice during training camp and play in preseason games, denied using hCG when the suspension was announced. He said he didn’t know how the substance got into his body.

Cushing has convinced his owner. McNair recently said that he backs Cushing and believes he is innocent. McNair has paid for some of Cushing’s recent tests.

Neither McNair nor Cushing could be reached Sunday.

Since his positive test last season, Cushing has traveled the country visiting specialists, including some in Houston, hoping to find a doctor who can prove hCG was produced naturally in his body.

Although hCG is a hormone that can be produced naturally in men and women, including in the pituitary gland, it is produced most commonly in pregnant women and has been used for weight loss and to slow the aging process.

ProFootballTalk.com showed in the offseason that the standard letter the league sends to players who test positive for hCG warns them that it can be a sign of tumors and that they should get tested.

Cushing was tested for tumors which can cause testicular cancer. Those tests were negative.

I'd really like to know what level he's tested at since the failed test. My understanding is that he was consistently testing at very low levels that were just below the threshhold until finally both of his samples in November were at the minimum and it was considered a failed test.

I'm under the impression from the media that the levels used for masking are humongous in comparison. I don't know how fast this stuff purges from your system, but you'd have to think it would have cleared out long ago if he was masking. If he's still consistently showing those similar low levels of production it would seem to be evidence in his favor that it might be naturally occurring for him.

I still wouldn't bet my house that he's innocent in this. But I am a little surprised that it played out how it did, when one of the experts testifying on behalf of the NFL during the appeal sided with Cushing that it could be naturally occurring.

bingo.

It’s early to panic, for sure. But that Mario Williams is compelled to get a second opinion on the hip issue that’s been holding him out of practice is certain a cause for concern.

John McClain and Mark Berman are both reporting that Williams is not with the team Monday as he seeks a second medical opinion.

Hopefully it’s again judged to be not serious. But a lingering issue for Williams from the start is certainly a bad thing for the Texans.

The possibility of him missing some action would be less of a big deal if the team adds Aaron Schobel, but indications seem to be it could be a while before the former Bills defensive end decides where to sign and strikes a deal.

UPDATE, 11:55: @NickScurfield of houstontexans.com tweeted this from Gary Kubiak on Williams: "All the reports are good. We expect him to get back here and get back on the field here shortly."

http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/post/_/id...-second-opinion

--------------------

Looks minor but keep an eye on.

per PFT:

Texans get good news regarding Mario Williams

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on August 9, 2010 2:06 PM ET

The second opinion on Mario Williams' hip came back the same as the Texans' first opinion.

"Great news on Mario," coach Gary Kubiak said Monday morning. "He went up there for a second opinion, and all of the reports were good, and we expect him to get back here and get back on the field here shortly."

Williams went to a sports hernia specialist, as there was some concern after Williams' hip pain moved into his groin area. Tests came up positive for a sports hernia, and Williams should re-join the Texans shortly.

Aaron Schobel may have just lost a few dollars.

I still wouldn't bet my house that he's innocent in this. But I am a little surprised that it played out how it did, when one of the experts testifying on behalf of the NFL during the appeal sided with Cushing that it could be naturally occurring.

From the Chronicle:

Texans' top pick Jackson to miss preseason openerTeam works out free agent defensive endsTexans rookie cornerback Kareem Jackson, left, will miss Saturday's preseason opener against Arizona due to a death in his family.Rookie cornerback Kareem Jackson, the Texans' first-round pick, will not play in Saturday's preseason game at Arizona.Jackson will return to Georgia to attend the funeral for his grandmother, who died this week. They're looking to sign a veteran to replace Tim Bulman, who has a shoulder injury.
Defensive end Tim Bulman's shoulder injury is expected to keep him out for several weeks, according to coach Gary Kubiak , meaning Bulman could be placed on injured reserve."He's not going to be back anytime soon," Kubiak said. "We'll continue to evaluate his shoulder and see exactly what the final result is going to be."

Tate left game with ankle injury, early speculation is that maybe a the high ankle type.
is it a knee or ankle??
Per Mcclain's twitter:"They say Tate has a lower leg injury and nothing more. We should find out more Sunday. about 1 hour ago via web "btw, Foster looked good tonight.
Texans RB Tate hurts right knee: Texans RB Ben Tate hurt his right knee on his second carry of the game at Arizona on Saturday night. Tate took a handoff to the left side and actually looked strong in picking up 12 yards when Cardinals LB Daryl Washington took him down by his right leg and his knee was driven into the turf. Tate writhed in pain while being attended to by trainers before getting helped to the sideline without putting weight on his leg. Minutes later he was carted from the sideline to the locker room with his right leg undressed and a trainer putting pressure on his right knee. Tate finished with 7 yards on two carries plus a 5-yard catch. (Updated 08/14/2010).From CBS

Maybe Im alone here, but although I didnt want to see Tate hurt obviously, I'm not really considered about losing him. It really didnt look like he was gonna be more than #3 this year anyway as Foster and Slaton were way ahead. I think if Henry and Johnson can finish out camp strong, we can really be ok at RB3. We never really got to see much of Tate, but I think the position will be ok.
