Can David Carr beat out Jake Delhomme? (1 Viewer)

I personally don't believe carr is done...but I haven't seen any news out of carolina talking much about him either...

can he take Jake's job?

I seem to think that he has some ability left and that he always seemed to be stuck behind a lousy o-line...was I mistaken? or is this kid a career backup now?

~your thoughts?

As for the thread title. No, I don't think Carr can beat out Delhomme in his first year in the system. I also don't believe Carr is a wreck. I think with proper coaching and a change of scenery he can still be successful in the NFL.

Word out of camp is that Jake has looked very good and adapting to the new offense very well (the new offense installed has been very well received and word has it that the offensive line loves the new scheme and Jake likes all his new toys (ie. throwing to the TE and RB's more)). Carr has been very erratic, but it's a very different offense than what he's used to.

From one of the Panthers board regular posters:

We needed the boost. From what I saw Thursday, and that was very vanilla and limited, it looks as if Colbert is right. I saw Carter catching passes over the middle, secondary receivers, such as TE, FB, ad RB are in on the passing game. Smith was Smith, but Defenses won't be able to double and triple him all the time. Look for King and Roserio to have good years. Gaines even caught a few balls. The zone scheme featured student body left and right with the RB finding a seam. Of course, there were other plays and schemes, but I think Foster will benefit from this and WIlliams will be better. I was very impressed with DelHomme. He seemed to be having a ball and was very effective. Carr has a ways to go, but a new system takes a while. From what i saw, he won't be sitting Jake down anytime soon.

My thoughts exactly. I like what Carolina has done to bring him in as protection for Jake, but I think Carolina will ride Jake unless he REALLY screws up or of course, he gets injured. They have the QB positioned pretty well covered, IMO. I'm looking forward to seeing what Jeff Davidson can bring to the Panthers offense. I think DeAngelo Williams is going to be a big factor in the offense. 1000 yards and 40 recs seems very doable based on what I've read.

Delhomme is a buy low, value QB for me this year. He is being drafted way too low.
My thoughts, exactly. He's coming off a below average stretch, and he has proven himself to be pretty good, IMO. I think he'll rebound. As for Carr, he just doesn't have it. So, no, I don't think there's a snowball's chance he could beat out Delhomme. Is it even considered a competition by the coaching staff?

:goodposting: Thanks for adding a first-hand perspective (even if not your own).

I like hearing good things about Jeff King :)

Carr needs a year off, but he is a capable QB. Delhomme was falling out of favor but he just inked a big contract, so barring a terrible start or an injury you won't see much of Carr this year. There could be a challenger to him in 08, but this year is highly unlikely. Carr and/or Kyle Boller (Baltimore) could be in camp to try and unseat him in 2008.

Carr is the best backup in the league, but he isn't unseating Delhomme. Delhomme just had an off year.

I think the success of Delhomme depends on the ability for the Panthers rushing attack to move the chains. Delhomme was at his best when Carolina had a big year from Stephen Davis, Nick Goings big 2nd half two years ago, etc.

Previous post from 2006 describing my opinion on Delhomme's success and struggles - Here

The combo of DeAngelo Williams and DeShaun Foster, along with an increased effort to utilize the RB out of the backfield on passing plays this season should help Delhomme. Barring injuries to key OL, I think Delhomme has a better year than last, stat-wise. With Drew Carter coming into his own and Dwayne Jarrett being Dwayne Jarrett, I like what Carolina brings to the table offensively in addition to All-World WR Steve Smith.

Carr is no better than Harrington, Charlie Batch, Garcia/Simms, or Brian Griese. I like the signing for Carolina, but he won't unseat Jake.
