I've heard a little bit of enthusiasm about this Patriots QB recently but honestly know nothing about him. It sounds like guys like Bloom and Cecil think he has some solid upside and that has my ears perked up. Is he the next Matt Schaub (back-up to entrenched starter that moves elsewhere to put up good numbers)? What are his skill sets? When does he become a free agent? Can he be expected to have a starting job somewhere in 2012? Inquiring dynasty league owner wants to know. Thanks in advance.

He was on my dynasty radar until the Patriots drafted Ryan Mallett. For redraft purposes I'd imagine he'd be a good waiver-wire pickup should Tom Brady get hurt.

He becomes a restricted free agent next year, but I don't think there will be much of a market for him until teams get a chance to see him play for more than the dozen snaps he did in a meaningless game. Unless Brady misses a game or two and Boyer shines, I think he stay with the Pats for a few more years.

I believe in Hoyer's potential, but I can't help but feel the same. The only way he gets to prove himself is with an injury to Brady. I'm pretty sure the Patriots would be happy with Hoyer as a backup until Brady retires. I don't understand the people that view the drafting of Mallett as a negative for Hoyer. New England drafted Mallett for value and nothing else. Mallett would have to change his outlook on life to truly become a Patriot. The team is hoping to flip him for a 1st round pick after he cleans up his image a bit. Bottom line is that I'm a Hoyer fan. I think he will succeed if given the chance in the NFL. I'm just not sure he'll ever get that chance.

:goodposting: That sums it up.On a slightly related note, if the intent of this post is because the Op is looking for a backup to snag that may pan out soon, you may want to look at Matt Flynn; I think there will be some interest in him around the league when he comes available. And, of course, whoever Andy Reid wants to sell in Philly (Young or Kafka...lol).

One the top backup QBs with long-term starter upside in dynasty along with Josh Johnson and Matt Flynn. Nothing but raves coming out about him, you knew there was something there when the Pats made him the backup to Brady as a rookie the year after Brady's ACL. Athletic, competitive, good arm. WRs really let him down in senior year at Sparty.

Actually the Mallett pick, increased Hoyer's value imo. It's not like you can wait out Brady's career for either young QB, and now its more likely that the Pats trade Hoyer away next offseason if he catches a team's eye this preseason.

I have been debating whether or not to stash Hoyer in my full-flex dynasty league. We have relatively shallow rosters (25) but I decided to pull the trigger tonight and hang onto him for a bit. I thought tonight was as good as any to go through with it. Probably not worth anything unless a team loves him as much as Zona did Kolb.

Excerpts from my take before he was drafted:

Brian Hoyer, Michigan State: I think Hoyer has a greater chance to be a success than Brady-in-a-Box

candidates Tom Brandstater and Hunter Cantwell. The reasons are pretty clear when you examine Hoyer’s

game. He’s a strong-armed passer with no major issues with his delivery and is capable of pinpoint accuracy

in the intermediate and deep range. He just has to shore up minor footwork issues with his set up to address

the problem. Hoyer moves and throws well moving to his left as a right-handed passer, and I think this a

very good sign that he’ll be able to refine his other issues.

What I like about Hoyer the most is whenever I watched him experience a bad play, he would frequently

follow up with a strong play. He didn’t play with a great receiving corps and I watched two games where he

had a total of 13 drops – 10 of them in one game alone. He demonstrated patience and I liked that he didn’t

mind throwing the ball out of bounds when he couldn’t spot anyone open. He’s a reasonably mature player

who plays within himself and was able to guide the Spartans to a winning season in a tough Big Ten

conference. He also impressed with his performance in the East-West Shrine Game practices. I actually

considered listing Hoyer as underrated, but I think he’ll be brought a long slower with lower expectations so

that makes him a project in my eyes
