Joseph Addai Owners: Anybody Benching Him Against The Vikings? (1 Viewer)

This past week, there was a thread asking Larry Johnson owners if they were considering benching him against the Patriots. Depending on your options, that move probably paid off given LJ's lackluster production today. So looking ahead to Week 2, I'll pose the same question to Addai owners:

Are you thinking about benching him against the Vikings?

Minnesota's run defense ranked No. 1 in the league last season against the run. Their 3.1 YPC average was second in the league. Addai, meanwhile, looked terrible against a vulnerable Bears' defense and has been held under 45 yards rushing in seven of his last eight games. It's been 11 games since his last 100-yard performance. So to say he's in a cold stretch would be a major understatement. Assuming the Vikings' run defense doesn't sprout a ton of holes tomorrow night against the Packers, are there any Addai owners thinking about sitting him in Week 2? That's a bold move to make for a player who was a Top 5 pick in many drafts but if he throws up another dog of a game it might prove to be the prudent move to make.

So what says the Addai owners here?

I know he has a head injury, but that does not seem serious.

I will not be sitting him, since he is still Joseph Addai.

The hit that took him out of the game, his knee was taken to a bad angle. I'll try to find a video. I don't think the head injury is a problem.
 
I'm seriously thinking about it. I started Addai & Portis this week and had Thomas Jones and Burner Turner on the bench :)

Ok. Well his head injury caused him to limp off the field tonight, never to return.Did look like he fell on it awkwardly. I doubt its too serious. Might be a sprain though causing him to miss a game or 2.

That's great depth and in your case I think sitting Addai is a very reasonable move. Of those four RBs, Addai would rank a distant fourth next week in my estimation at this time. One of the biggest things that I saw tonight was what a total non-factor Addai was in the passing game. You could normally expect him to get 2-4 receptions a game, making him viable at least in PPR leagues. But he stayed in to block on almost every passing snap tonight because the Bears were showing so much pressure. I would think the Vikings would want to emulate that plan and so if Addai doesn't get anything on the ground (and there's no realistic reason to think he will given how bad he's been dating back to last season and how good the Vikings are against the run), he may not get anything in the passing game either. I'm not sure many Addai owners will have your kind of depth, though.

I'm not sure where you guys are getting a knee injury from. He got hit in the head and walked off the field. There was no indication at all anything else was wrong with him other than he got hit in the head again. The guy is a magnet for head injuries.
 
Addai won't get 30 yards rushing against the Vikings. But he may take a screen to the house. Only owners with serious depth (like the one who posted above) can even consider benching him.

You're right. I thought for sure I saw him limping. Had the sound down.
 
I'm benching him for Chris Johnson. Addai was never the most gifted runner, but he benefitted from playing in a great system. The Colts OL looked like garbage last night and until that unit gets their act together Addai is going to suffer big time.

Started Addai and Portis this week. Both playing behind garbage OL's. :wall:

 
If this is what we can expeect from the Colts (50 passes per game) then I think it's going to be a long year for Addai. The play calling was a little suspect, even when they were down only 2 they were passing on every down and Addai had to stay in the pocket to pass protect. I think the loss of Saturday is bigger than I expected.

It was week one, the Colts played the preseason without Manning. They didnt appear to be in sync or have their timing down. My guess is that will come back pretty quickly.

As far as Addai vs. the Vikings, it is too early to call. The Vikes did not look that stout vs. the run in the preseason but they could have been holding back. The Bears defense looked bad at times during the preseason and they showed up last night. I think we have to watch the Vikes play a game before you start to get worried.

:goodposting: I actually thought Addai ran pretty hard and looked damn good vs a tough Chicago run defense. Im not worried about him yet. As a matter of fact I wont worry about him until after week 4 cuz he has a really tough start to the season. I for one hope he plays next week cuz my depth isnt the best. That being said I dont expect many yards on the ground but you never know, he could get some short goalline TDs. The problems with Addai is the OLine is gonna take some time with the injuries to gel and he always seems to get shaken up once per game, its really crazy. It is pretty crazy that the guy hasnt rushed for 100 yds in 11 games. Maybe he is overrated.
 
I thought I started the season with good rb depth having Addai, Barber, and Jones-Drew, and already after week 1 two of them get dinged up. If Barber's playing, I'm going to sit Addai for MJD for a week, but I still think Addai's going to be in my lineup after that, barring injury.

I think if you're looking for a buy low on Addai, you might have to wait another week. Granted, some owners might panic after one bad game, but most will probably wait to see more. If he doesn't play next week, or if he plays and has his second ineffective game in a row, an Addai owner is much more likely to be in a panic that they're stuck with a first round bust and look to move him.

74 yards against what many consider to be one of the best defenses in the NFL ( Patriots) , LJ did pretty well..he will soon be playing the likes of,don't laugh, Denver, Oakland, SD's overrated run defense..will also playFalcons, Jets, Saints, Bills.I think LJ will b just fineas for Addai, I wouln't want him on my team,that hole in the middle of the o-line where Saturday used to play, isgoing to be a problem for Manning..NE used to rush Manning up the middle, it has become his weak spot..now that Chicago exploited this, other teams are sure to copy that gameplan, right? :shrug:

I thought he looked terrible but how good he looked is subjective. What isn't are the measly 44 yards he rushed for. That's terrible. Unfortunately, as I posted last night, that's par for the course for Addai dating back to last season. We are now entering a large sample size of games with Addai where he's failed to produce quality rushing numbers. He often saved his fantasy owners last season by being heavily involved in the passing game but as I posted last night that wasn't the case against the Bears. If the Colts keep him in to pass protect against the Vikings, that could render Addai worthless. To me, the latter is the more serious concern from a fantasy perspective. Although one would hope your first-round pick might be able to rush for more than 45 yards in a game once in awhile, one of the biggest parts of Addai's game has been his receptions. If he loses those, Addai owners are going to be in serious trouble.

I'd argue that the Vikings' D Line is better and quite a bit better.

I might sit him as I have capable back ups, but I think you are wrong about him. I think he was doing ok until he got hurt. I watched the game and he had less than 10 attempts in the first half. He didn't go gang busters, but sometimes it takes a bit to get going and Indy didn't exactly give the running game a chance. 49 passes. 15 total rushes. They didn't exactly come out and commit to the run. 3.67 ypc isn't great but its not that bad that they should only rush 15 times a game either. Usually runners get better as the game goes on and they just passed and passed and passed.

Even if we want to stipulate that he looked great running the ball, that doesn't change the fact he was a total non-factor in the passing game. Like I posted earlier, that's more of a concern to me than his putrid rushing total. If the Colts continue to keep Addai in to pass protect, his reception total could take a major hit. That would significantly impact his fantasy value. Given how, in my opinion, the Vikings' defense is much better than Chicago's, I'm not sure I see any reason to be optimistic about Addai's chances next week.

Addai is really underrated on these boards. It irritates me at times, because I really feel the reason people keep trying to dog him is because they were wrong about him. It didn't matter who was running behind that OL this past week, non one was going to get yards. The fact Addai was near 4.0 YPC is a testament to his talent. But I digress...Here's the positives I saw. At the half they adjusted some of their OL schemes, and it seemed to work, as Addai popped off an 8 and a 9 yarder right before he got hurt. Also, Rhodes saw 2 carries total, so there's no real threat to Addai splitting time running the ball.Here are the negatives. He wasn't involved at all in the passing game as he was held in to block a lot. Rhodes had 4 catches, and was used that way primarily. That does raise some questions.Here's what I think will happen this week. Addai will see 15+ carries, and be near 4.2 YPC, probably get between 60-80 yards rushing. He will score a TD, and will be used more in the passing game.Why? I thought the OL improvement in game one will continue. Grant was able to break off a long run against MIN on a bad hamstring, so Addai should have success. Rhodes wasn't very good as a receiver last week, Addai is simply better.Now that makes him probably an RB2, not an RB3. If you have better options, or better matchups (CJ3 vs CIN) then take them. But don't be mad if Addai outperforms your other option.
 
switz, I'm a big Addai fan. I wouldn't have taken him fourth in my league and ahead of Gore (who I love this year) if I wasn't. However, I was very disappointed with how poor he looked against the Colts. Yes, his line has issues. No question. But to compare him to Ryan Grant, for example - Grant ran hard against a great run defense. Even if the gain was 2 or 3 yards, he looked real good in my opinion. And this was a guy who hadn't had any game action since January and was facing an elite run defense. What concerned me the most about Addai in the opener were:

1. How soft he often ran.

2. His lack of involvement in the passing game.

Do either of these things mean he sucks? No and I never said that. But I am very concerned that if he can look that bad against the Bears, he may look considerably worse against a much better run defense like Minnesota's.

I hope like hell I'm wrong. I don't have the type of RB talent that will allow me to bench him this week. And where Dodds currently has him ranked is about where I would rank him this week - a lower RB2. I just hope he puts up those kind of numbers because he was a RB5 in my league in Week 1.

I would agree that I am not as nervous about this week after watching the Vikings on Monday night. They were letting up nice holes for Grant to run through and only seemed to stop the run when they completely broke through and got a couple guys free into the backfield. I also think their backfield is as bad as last year, and for all the positives along the d-line, they are not going to have the safety or LB support they need to stuff the run as effectively as they should when these players drop back for pass support. They also have a lot of big and old guys on defense, so it doesn't help that the offense doesn't keep them off of the field enough for a breather.
 
I think a lot of what we saw from Grant against the Vikings was due to his hard running. He was hitting the hole quickly and with plenty of authority. I thought he ran extremely well.

But the Vikings definitely stepped up at the goal line. They just refused to let Grant score despite several attempts.

I don't necessarily know if that's true this year. The MIN defense didn't look very good against the Pack at all. And the Bears might just have improved over the offseason.From watching, Grant didn't run any harder than Addai, he just had holes. Addai had NO HOLES at all. It was ridiculous. I'm guessing you didn't actually see both games from what you are saying.

Go back and watch the safety on highlights, and tell me Addai wasn't running hard.

Also, Addai did get used in the passing game, he just didn't get thrown to much, but he was an option.

I watched both games. I respect your opinion about how Addai looked. I didn't think he looked as good as you did. Hopefully we're both a couple of happy Addai owners on Sunday. What sucks is he's my No. 1 pick and I have to hope he'll do well instead of just expecting him to do well. That shouldn't be happening in Week 2 but that's the deal with Addai unfortunately.

To take this a step further:In his last 10 games (including the 1 playoff game last year) he has:137 carries - 455 yards - 3.32 ypc - 5 TDsThe highest rushing yards total for a single game in those 10 games is 72. :shock:
 
He looked pretty explosive when he had some running room. Anyhow, with his injury, the Colts having 3 new OL, and a stiff Vikings run D, I'm benching him for.... Portis. Yuck

 
We get points per reception and I'm honestly considering benching Addai for Chris Johnson (Bush is officially my #1 RB). I'm unsure if those holes opening up for Grant will be there for Addai on Sunday. Not a fan of this blocking role for him either.

I agree with what most say. Id consider Addai a RB2 this week. I love Johnson's matchup this week and while Im not ready to anoint the guy a top 10 stud already I DO think he is the better play than Addai this week. Johnson should put up 100-120 yds combined at minimum with a 50/50 chance at a TD. Addai hasnt had that many yds combined in 11 weeks.
 
It's a shame to consider benching the #4 pick overall for a 10th round pick in Week 2. But I guess that's why I love these boards....to check if I'm crazy or not lol.

 
Benching this guy week 2 makes no sense. 'Never bench your studs'

You can go back thru this message board from the past number of years and see how many people wanted to bench RB1 vs Baltimore, Chicago, etc...and those that sit a first round selection get burnt more often than not.

If you believe it's a 'shark' move to start a rookie that look good last week, great. But sitting a player with Addai's abilities on a hunch can bite you in the but.

Minny's D did not stand out to me last week. Maybe if I had the backups some of you do I might feel different but in a 14 team league, I'm not going to put in Slaton or Julius over this guy.

But that's just my opinion.

He looked pretty explosive when he had some running room. Anyhow, with his injury, the Colts having 3 new OL, and a stiff Vikings run D, I'm benching him for.... Portis. Yuck

:X Benching for Portis too. At least Portis was getting the ball on half the plays, Addai was an afterthought. They abandoned a relatively effective run game far too early.

I didn't want to start a new thread, but things may be better for Addai and Peyton this week. On Colts.com, it lists that Saturday practiced fully today and Addai isn't listed at all. I'm not surprised that Addai isn't listed as the coach said it was nothing and the hit didn't really look that bad, but Saturday practicing fully kind of surprised me. Wasn't he supposed to be out for a while? Would he practice fully if he wasn't playing this week?

 
I expect the Colts to put some points on the board and the Vikes to be playing catchup, which will keep Addai on the field late in the game when Indy is trying to run out the clock. I would not bench him.
