Josh Morgan... (1 Viewer)

This guy looked pretty impressive out there, against the Raiders 1st string D. Was the 'go-to-guy' last night it seemed and caught everything his way. He also has impressed in TC from reports...

Now with Martz in town, and Morgan possibly being a #3/4 WR, could he be something or even a top WR for the 9ers (guys in front of him an aging Bruce, slot guys with Johnson/Battle)?

Granted the QB situation is a mess, but it seems like the kid has talent...worth a late pick in the rookie draft?

hokie hokie hokie hi, tech tech V P I. Loved watching him in blacksburg. He is a stout body and i think he will be a great posession reciever similar to h. ward except heavier.watch out for royal as well in denver.

I loved Morgan at VT and think he's going to be an excellent player in the league. A steal in the 6th round (IIRC) for the Niners. I thought he could be a first day guy.

Is it too early to proclaim a camp sensation?

Josh Morgan continues to raise eyebrows during 49ers camp, looking far better than his sixth-round draft status would suggest.

The rookie receiver did it again Monday in Napa, and this time there was extra reason to underline his performance with a highlight pen:

1. Morgan did it against the Raiders in a semi-competitive practice

2. Morgan did it while working with the starting unit.

Isaac Bruce had a scheduled day of rest and Bryant Johnson suffered a hamstring injury.

That opened the door for the rookie — and he ran right through it. Morgan’s day caught the attention of no less an authority than Mike Martz.

Asked if any players stood out, Martz didn’t hesitate.

“Josh,’’ the offensive coordinator replied.

Morgan has drawn Martz’s ire at times early in camp. But the kid is clearly getting the hang of it. During 7-on-7 drills against the Raiders on Monday, he torched defensive back Darrick Brown and hauled in a long pass from J.T. O’Sullivan.

How good was his route running on the play? Receivers coach Jerry Sullivan, known for being impossible to please, walked over and shook Morgan’s hand on the spot.

“We’ve been very happy with Josh all year,’’ Martz said. “Josh really today did some nice things. He still makes mistakes and does some things you don’t like, but he’s made really good progress.”

Morgan is physical, at 6-foot, 219 pounds. But he has good speed and a fluid stride. He led an offensively-challenged Virginia Tech team last year with 46 catches for 552 yards (12.0 average) and five touchdowns.

“He’s come remarkably far from where he was when he came here. … We put him in that first group now and he did a nice job.”

Josh Morgan.

Eddie Royal.

David Clowney.

We also may hear from Justin Harper in Baltimore if he gets some playing time (and decent QB play).

Understand something - the Hokies play "Beamer Ball", which means that Special Teams are emphasized at Va Tech. That's huge at the NFL level as rookies often play ST as a foot in the door to making the roster.

Morgan always stood out in Va Tech games when he was focused. As others have mentioned, he's a big boy, but he's more explosive and athletic than you would expect. His main problem at Va Tech was consistency. When he wasn't getting balls thrown his way (and this is Va Tech with true freshman running QB Tyrod Taylor in part of the time in an already pass-deficient game plan), he would check out. The physical ability and natural receiving skills are most definitely there, and so far all the signs out of SF are good. He'll likely have to only beat out Ashley Lelie (snicker snicker) for a roster spot as the #5, and the long term picture in SF is very unsettled.

He did have a very nice game and looked like a very reliable reciever, however, I just watched the game and only 1 catch came while the starting CB's were on the field and that was a very quick slant, caught after a step and ran for about a 10 yard gain.

Reports are now that he's competing with Johnson to START. Colston, anyone?
:blackdot: Not with the cluster crap at QB.O'Sullivan is one of the worst QB's I've ever seen. He's a worse system QB than when Spurrier tried using Wuerrfeul (sp?) at QB at the NFL level, worse than Jonathan Quinn Medicine Woman when Terry Shea tried using him in Chicago.

Ummm no? :blackdot: San Fran is in no position to be even the slightest bit productive
For what it is worth, Pat Kirwan compared him to A. Boldin and thinks he can have the same impact during his sirius 49er camp show today. If I remember correctly that Arizona team had crapola at both the QB position and every other offensive position the year Boldin burst onto the scene.

Sad to say, but the 2003 combination of Jeff Blake and Josh McCown was far superior to what the 49ers are working with at QB this year.

Just watched SF/OAK last night and all I can say is :goodposting:

The guy looks the part. No question. I don't have any issues in what I'm seeing here as a big target and a legit NFL WR.

Now, calm down - it is August. But I want to see Week 2 against Green Bay.

If you have some interest in him and a draft prior to Saturday night, he's a great flyer pick.

This makes me really happy and really upset as a VT alum. Everyone knew VT had talent in it's receivers except the OC is a plain jane and thinks WR screens are the best way to utilize his weapons. Clowney, Morgan, Royal, Harper...wouldnt surprise me if they all had healthy careers.

:coffee:He's played excellent thus far. Being in the Martz offense can only help. O'Sullivan can't suck as bad as Smith has. That said, he seems like the perfect guy to pick up with that very last roster spot. Good chance he does nothing, but gotta like the upside right now.

Morgan has looked great the first two pre-season games, he's pretty big at 6'1 220 and was able to dominate the Green Bay corners. He seems to leap for every catch which may hurt his RAC yardage.

what was that guy's name, Taye Biddle? Tye Biddle?...that ring a bell?

What's to say he's not the next one?

:goodposting: But Josh is getting huge praise from his coaches and has had an excellent TC. Did Taye? He was cut after preseason, fwiw. Obv we have no idea if he'll be a stud or someone who we try for and fails, but why not try? His potential seems to be a lot higher than other guys on your waiver wire, or that were drafted around him.

I agree, why not tryhard to tell though isn't it?

I don't think so. They're two very different situations really. Biddle posted a 2-100-2 type night with the 2nd/3rd string (Basanez/Carr I believe???). And that was pretty much it. IIRC, he was never really a contender for one of the top 2-3 WR spots, with Smith locked in, and the team still very high on Carter, with Colbert and even Jarrett still in the mix at the time. My memory might be deceiving me, he wasn't even a blip on my radar at the time, so if I'm wrong on that one, so be it. Morgan has an ideal situation ahead of him. Coaching staff is very high on him, and injuries have given him a chance to shine in the only "legitimate" playing time one can expect in pre-season. With no clear cut long-term guy at WR, he's a perfect gamble in dynasty leagues, and probably worth a late stab in redraft leagues if they were held today.

If you've seen him play (not sure if you have or not), this guy is the best player on the field for SF (WR's). Take away his boxscore numbers, and just watch him. It's easy to see what he has... some players succeed because they come into a great situation or it takes them a couple of years to "get it", but Morgan will succeed regardless and most likely, immediately. He just has it. And if you just get to only watch the highlights of the game, then you probably missed one play where JM ran a great route and got like 4 or 5 yds down-field ahead of the DB, but A.Smith under-threw him badly. Would have been another 50+ score. I dont know what type of leagues you play in and what the roster limits are, but my league has a taxi squad for rookies only, so it's not a huge deal to take a flyer on a player like Morgan.

That's the thing, really. He's wasn't even getting drafted 3 weeks ago. If you have decent sized rosters, why not grab the guy that has shined the most, in a Mike Martz offense? I am quite sure the Mike Furrey bandwagon took a while getting fired up two years ago, and by that time, he was rostered.I think the San Fran WRs are like scratch tickets. I'm gonna get a cheap one (Battle, Morgan, Hill), stick it in my wallet, and see if I can hit the Pick 4. Maybe not a Powerball payoff, but worth a WR3 maybe.

Morgan seemingly has talent + opportunity; but Bryant Johnson is not playing right now, so, the opportunity portion is still a bit in the wind.

Yeah, Morgan looks good, but to be honest it may be a completely different picture during the regular season. As long as Isaac is healthy he'll most likely get the most targets. The entire coaching staff was raving about Bryant Johnson during OTA's and there is no doubt that he's going to start along side Isaac. Plus we're not sure how Battle is going to fit in all this yet, he's been the most consistent WR for the niners the last few years. I definitely think Morgan is ahead of Hill and Lelie though. My guess is Lelie gets cut.

I wouldnt at all be surprised to see Bruce and BJ open the season as the starters. But certainly wouldnt be surprised if Morgan were starting opposite Bruce, either. Both players are new to Martz' playbook, so it's not like Johnson has an edge over Morgan, and the more time BJ is out, the more Morgan gets to impress... that wont hurt his chances of starting come week 1.

:lmao: I'd say there is plenty of doubt, if you or anyone else want to bury their head in the sand and ignore whats going on then that's fine by me, but Morgan has been getting just as much if not more praise then Johnson and he's also shown it ON THE FIELD two weeks in a row. And given Martz's history, I wont be writing off the possibility of any of those WR's working their way into a starting spot, especially since Johnson didnt get any kind of monster contract.

where do you rank him among rookie WRs right now? Hes definitley rising quickly. If he moves into the starting line up week 1 is there any other rookie wrs you would rather have?

I can tell you that he's ahead of Nelson :popcorn:This hype, especially around these boards, has driven his price up significantly. He's currently valued around top 2nd amongst the masses (from what I've seen in my leagues of course). Whether this is fair value remains to be seen. Was rejected earlier today.

I took him at 4.07 in a rookie draft that's going on right now. I picked him off waivers in most of my other leagues. Having said that, given his recent performance I could see him going in the late 2nd or early 3rd if our draft was currently in those rounds.

The kid certainly has talent. I don't really like the QB situation in SF, but whoever becomes the starter will hopefully improve as the season goes on.
