Agreed - it was almost like stopping at a green light after you get to run a red, but then they resumed scooping up the value for the rest of the draft.Apparently they thought Knighton was the last true NT with that kind of athletic ability, and Cox is the kind of athlete with top notch character that might make a team paranoid that someone else was going to take him soon. I mean if you have a guy graded as a 2nd rounder (and they clearly did), you can't assume no one else has them graded there.

So, I am confused. A team reaches for picks, but earns a grade of A? I know they drafted two or three of your favorites late, but I don't see how that makes up for the forced value earlier.

The main reason they got an A was "right place right time" for Monroe and Britton, and the value of not just Thomas/Dillard, but Jennings too. If they take Dillard and Thomas back to back in the 3rd and then Knighton and Cox in the 4th and 5th, it would look terrific, so the reaches and value cancel each other out. I'm also willing to excuse the reaches a little more since they were their only two defensive picks of the draft, and they got the exact second day guys they wanted.
I remember Kiper saying "You take a corner from William and Mary? " Some teams don't remember this is the third round even though it is the second day of the draft." Kiper then went on to say he was his 106th corner. I don't know anything about him but I remember laughing about his comments on Jax's pick.
I love these threads. We're saying the Jags are the head of the class based on our perceived draft values. Let's wait to see how these things work out.
There are 2 other teams in the division who have a better draft history, so to say the Jags are the head of this class is amusing to me. Especially when you agree that they reached twice.

Draft history for the Jags goes out the window because this is effectively a new regime under Gene Smith. I agree that they reached twice, but on multiple other occasions they got the best value on the board that intersected with their need, and I love the way they used their late picks. I can also at least see why they reached for Knighton and Cox even if they are reaches, as opposed to say, Miami reaching for Turner and Hartline,
Outside of their their third round of Derek Cox, I'd say that the Jags executed a perfect draft strategy. They selected for the best value available.
They viewed Knighton as the last DT with starting potential, so I understand that. The selection of Derek Cox is as controversial as they come though. Prior to making their move for him, they deemed that he was most likely going to be selected shortly, so they made their move. I have to say that despite all the worderful selections that they made, this draft class will be judged on how well Derek Cox performs. They see something in him, so I'm thinking the kid can play. I wouldn't know better either way- I've never seen him play.
I've been pretty down about many of the moves that they have made lately, but I have to say that I am very hopeful because of this draft. Gene Smith seems to be the polar opposite of Shack Harris.
The view of what I think Colts fans think of their team's draft:
1. They love getting two 300+ pounder DTs in the draft - and getting Adrian Grady in UDFA.
2. They don't like the 3rd round pick of the Auburn CB - and Colts have not had a good 3rd round pick since Polian has been there, so they assume he won't amount to much.
3. They are mixed about Donald Brown - but generally are OK with it because they got DTs early in the draft.
4. Most don't like the Curtis Painter pick - but since the Colts said they are keeping 3 QBs on the roster - I'm OK with it.
5. They like getting a punter in round 6, especially since a punter pretty much knocked them out of the playoffs last time.
6. They would have liked to have seen the Colts draft a LB somewhere - but it looks like Keiaho will come back for depth, so I think they can wait until next draft for the LB.
7. Most don't seem to mind that they only got one WR in round 4.
