Manning Maintaining Large Presence in Colts 2008 Training Camp, Dungy Says
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Around 2008 Training Camp, there have been no sightings of the Colts’ most-high profile player.
Peyton Manning’s not throwing passes. And he’s not running drills.
But Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy said fans and observers shouldn’t be fooled.
Manning is very, very present.
Manning, an eight-time Pro Bowl selection who never has missed a regular-season start in 10 NFL seasons, is in Terre Haute, Dungy said. And although Manning has yet to practice since undergoing surgery to remove an infected bursa sac from his left knee 10 days before camp, Dungy said he is as involved in the preparation process for the season as if he were participating in drills.
“He’s back here, going about his business,” Dungy said Tuesday between a pair of training camp practices at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
Dungy said Manning critiqued the Colts’ 30-16 loss to the Washington Redskins in the preseason-opening Hall of Fame Game Sunday night, a game started by Colts reserve quarterback
Jim Sorgi.
“He gave me his impressions of the game, so I think we’re getting back to normal,” Dungy said. “I think he was pleased with the way the offense moved the ball and disappointed we didn’t score more touchdowns in the red zone. That’s something we’ve been working on.
“I think he was like all of us, and felt like we had some things we could build on. He’s getting the practice tapes and getting transcripts.
“He knows what’s going on at every practice. He’s doing fine.”
Sorgi, who made his third career preseason start in place of Manning, played one series, leading a 16-play, 73-yard drive that resulted in a 26-yard field goal by kicker Adam Vinatieri. Sorgi completed 7 of 10 of passes for 66 yards on the drive, three times completing first-down converting passes – two 6-yarders to tight end Dallas Clark and a 10-yarder to Gijon Robinson.
Sorgi and the first-team offense were scheduled to play 12-to-15 plays and left after the long first series.
“I got a text (from Manning),” Sorgi said. “He said, ‘Good job’ and ‘keep going.’ He was proud of me. When you’re him and you do things as close to perfect as you possibly can all the time, you have the right to critique everybody else.”
Said Dungy, “He (Manning) is like he always is. It’s no different for him than if he was actually out there. That’s what makes him good. He’s analyzing every practice, everything we do. He’s putting himself in position so when he does come back it won’t be like he’s been totally away from it.
“He has been away from it physically, but mentally, he’s going through every practice.”
In other Colts news, Dungy said second-year cornerback Michael Coe will have exploratory knee surgery Wednesday.
“We’ll find out a little more tomorrow night where he is,” Dungy said.
Dungy also said rookie linebacker Philip Wheeler underwent knee surgery in the past few days and should begin rehabilitation in the “next day or so.”
Dungy said wide receivers Roy Hall (hamstring) and Pierre Garcon (hamstring) likely will not play when the Colts visit the Carolina Panthers in a preseason game Saturday. Dungy said defensive end Jeff Charleston (groin) may play Saturday.
“Those were three we weren’t really expecting after the game, but nothing that seems like it’s going to be too major,” Dungy said.
Linebackers Clint Session (calf) and Gary Brackett (groin), each of whom missed the preseason opener, may return toward the end of the week, Dungy said.
“We might get them back,” Dungy said. “We’ll see how they’re doing, but not early in the week, for sure.”
The Colts were off Monday following Sunday’s loss to Washington. They will practice twice Wednesday and Thursday and one Friday before traveling to Carolina.
“It’s nice to get back and get going,” Dungy said. “It’s going to be a little bit of a short week for us playing Saturday after a Sunday game, but I think we have a lot of things to build on. We’re looking forward to using this week to try to improve and see if we can play just a little bit better Saturday than we did Sunday night.
“I was really pleased with the first time out, especially for a lot of our younger guys.”

Manning expected to play in opener
Report: Favre made calls to Vikings

Indianapolis coach Tony Dungy is certain Peyton Manning's left knee will be ready for the Colts' season opener.
Yesterday, Dungy said he was optimistic the Colts' biggest question heading into training camp - Manning's knee - could be resolved quicker than most people expect. Dungy said his starting quarterback could play in the preseason.
Manning had surgery last week to remove an infected bursa sac, a procedure doctors said would require four to six weeks to heal.
Typically, Dungy defers to medical experts on injury matters, but he knows Manning well enough to realize keeping Manning off the field for six weeks might be tougher than the rehabilitation.
"I have talked to Peyton, and we're just following the doctor's instructions right now," Dungy said. "I'm hoping for four weeks, but if he's truly out six weeks, I think it will be hard to keep him out. However it goes, he'll be ready when he comes back."
Manning has not spoken publicly since having surgery July15 and is expected to take questions tomorrow when the Colts report to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind.
During the past decade, Manning has earned a reputation as one of the NFL's best and most durable quarterbacks. He has started all 160 regular-season games in his 10-year career, the second-longest streak of any quarterback in NFL history behind Brett Favre's record of 253.
Manning's absence might not hurt the Colts too much this summer because Dungy, offensive coordinator Tom Moore and associate head coach Jim Caldwell had already decided to limit how many snaps Manning, 32, would have in camp.
"It may be a blessing in disguise because Tom, Jim and I talked in June about giving Jim [sorgi] some extra work with the first group anyways," Dungy said. "Peyton would like to take every snap, but Jim [Caldwell] has scaled it back every year. It would be optimal to get a couple of weeks in, but if not I think we'll be able to go."
Manning won't be the Colts' only prominent player missing from Friday's first practice.
Dungy expects four other starters to join Manning on the physically-unable-to-perform list - safety Bob Sanders, last season's NFL Defensive Player of the Year; defensive end Dwight Freeney, the 2004 NFL sacks champion; guard Ryan Lilja; and linebacker Tyjuan Hagler. All are expected to be ready for the season-opener, Sept. 7 against the Chicago Bears.

Manning to miss 6-9 (not 4-6) to possibly season WARNING NO "CITE" QUOTES ANNONYMOUS SPORTSTALK LEAKS
BUMP for MAD PROPS TO DJCOLTS. It was based on this info unearthed from the muck of prseasons bloggers that led me to pass on (and not keep manning in a 10 team keeper at a second round value) Instead I tossed Manning back and was roundly ridculed when I said matter of factly "my sources say Manning had a second surgery and will struggle much worse than people think". So I drafted Andre Johnson, and then some guy named Jay Cutler (when I never would have taken Cutler if I had Manning. It's collective work like this thread that is why FBG is the BOMB.djcolts said:From StampedeBlue.com - a great Colt fan's blog (if true, this is NOT GOOD NEWS).
Report: Peyton Manning had second surgery on his knee last month
by BigBlueShoe on Aug 21, 2008 11:56 AM EDT in Colts News
The more I read on this subject, the more I get the feeling the Colts have flat out lied to the fans and the media. Michael Lombardi, the former personnel head for the Oakland Raiders, does a column for The National Football Post. He's a knowledgeable guy with friends and contacts throughout the NFL. His column dated for today reveals from very serious information on Peyton Manning's surgery and recovery:
Apparently Manning had to go through another procedure on his knee to clean things out after having his bursa sac removed last month. What is the most concerning is not the second operation (which the Colts are denying), but that they cannot control the swelling in Manning's knee and any physical movement causes MORE swelling. Once he returns to the game, gets hit, has to place a load on the knee, and drive the ball, there can be swelling. All I know is that there is MUCH more here than meets the eye. Manning has the trainer come over to HIS home for rehab and is rarely seen. Now, I have been with some big-time quarterbacks in my career like Joe Montana and Rich Gannon and never have they rehabbed from home. I thought this was not an issue and that Manning would be back.
Unless Lombardi is lying, or his sources are full of i
t, the Colts have been fibbing to fans and media about Peyton Manning's recovery. A second procedure is a pretty big friggin' deal, even if it was to clean up some minor stuff in the knee. Even if the knee is fine, and has no structural damage, it's pretty damn important to tell your fans (who are bought tickets to the opening of their public funded stadium at $160 bucks a pop).
The more you read into this, with players and coaches getting quoted as saying they'd like Peyton back for the opener, but... the more I get the sense the Colts are softening the fanbase up to the prospect that Jim Sorgi will start Week One against the Chicago Bears. We're hearing players saying things like "We'd like to have him back, but he just needs to not miss any playoff games."
Ugh.
Again, there is also encouraging news, like Peyton leading the offense through a walk through yesterday. But if Peyton did indeed have a second "routine procedure," then all this stuff Bill Polian has fed to us about everything being fine and right on schedule is complete and utter bullsh*t.
I certainly hope I'm wrong. I hope Lombardi is wrong and he is totally full of it. But, from the looks of it, Lombardi looks credible, and the Colts are not credible when it comes to reporting injury updates. They are also just flat our BAD at rehabbing their players and getting them ready to play. They screwed it up for Bob Sanders in 2006, Marvin Harrison in 2007, and now maybe Peyton Manning in 2008.
Again, I hope this is false. It just doesn't seem false, and Bill Polian and the Colts crappy PR department might have a lot of explaining to do.

if the station leaked it through a confidential source this could be legitXL950 Sports Talk radio just reported the a "annoymous" member of the Colts staff leaked that Peyton has an infection from his surgery and could miss the season if this doctors can not get the infection under controll. Please, does anyone have any more info about this???
even more suspect, but sunlight is the best disenfectant.Bursa sac injuries are bad, as their emoval itself is extremley debilitating. If it's a serious infection I could see the colts siding with the next 7 years are more important than getting him back on the field. And that scares me as my draft keeper list is due Fri.Latest report is Manning could miss 6-9 games this year becuase of the infection. A report from WBBM Radio in Chicago has the Colts looking into their QB situation with trade rumors the Colts signing Chad Pennington or even a trade. Another possibility is the Colts going to Quintin Gray as the starting QB.
