Report: Peyton Manning had second surgery on his knee last month

by BigBlueShoe on Aug 21, 2008 11:56 AM EDT in Colts News

The more I read on this subject, the more I get the feeling the Colts have flat out lied to the fans and the media. Michael Lombardi, the former personnel head for the Oakland Raiders, does a column for The National Football Post. He's a knowledgeable guy with friends and contacts throughout the NFL. His column dated for today reveals from very serious information on Peyton Manning's surgery and recovery:

Apparently Manning had to go through another procedure on his knee to clean things out after having his bursa sac removed last month. What is the most concerning is not the second operation (which the Colts are denying), but that they cannot control the swelling in Manning's knee and any physical movement causes MORE swelling. Once he returns to the game, gets hit, has to place a load on the knee, and drive the ball, there can be swelling. All I know is that there is MUCH more here than meets the eye. Manning has the trainer come over to HIS home for rehab and is rarely seen. Now, I have been with some big-time quarterbacks in my career like Joe Montana and Rich Gannon and never have they rehabbed from home. I thought this was not an issue and that Manning would be back.

Unless Lombardi is lying, or his sources are full of i

t, the Colts have been fibbing to fans and media about Peyton Manning's recovery. A second procedure is a pretty big friggin' deal, even if it was to clean up some minor stuff in the knee. Even if the knee is fine, and has no structural damage, it's pretty damn important to tell your fans (who are bought tickets to the opening of their public funded stadium at $160 bucks a pop).

The more you read into this, with players and coaches getting quoted as saying they'd like Peyton back for the opener, but... the more I get the sense the Colts are softening the fanbase up to the prospect that Jim Sorgi will start Week One against the Chicago Bears. We're hearing players saying things like "We'd like to have him back, but he just needs to not miss any playoff games."

Ugh.

Again, there is also encouraging news, like Peyton leading the offense through a walk through yesterday. But if Peyton did indeed have a second "routine procedure," then all this stuff Bill Polian has fed to us about everything being fine and right on schedule is complete and utter bullsh*t.

I certainly hope I'm wrong. I hope Lombardi is wrong and he is totally full of it. But, from the looks of it, Lombardi looks credible, and the Colts are not credible when it comes to reporting injury updates. They are also just flat our BAD at rehabbing their players and getting them ready to play. They screwed it up for Bob Sanders in 2006, Marvin Harrison in 2007, and now maybe Peyton Manning in 2008.

Again, I hope this is false. It just doesn't seem false, and Bill Polian and the Colts crappy PR department might have a lot of explaining to do.
BUMP for MAD PROPS TO DJCOLTS. It was based on this info unearthed from the muck of prseasons bloggers that led me to pass on (and not keep manning in a 10 team keeper at a second round value) Instead I tossed Manning back and was roundly ridculed when I said matter of factly "my sources say Manning had a second surgery and will struggle much worse than people think". So I drafted Andre Johnson, and then some guy named Jay Cutler (when I never would have taken Cutler if I had Manning. It's collective work like this thread that is why FBG is the BOMB.

DJColtss. I (and many others here I am guessing) Owe you a nice cold drink!

Now if you ever leave that boring ####hole and come to Atlanta like I've been screaming for years this might happen. :)

Manning 'involved' in camp from colts web site

STAYING INVOLVED

By John Oehser - Colts.com

Manning Maintaining Large Presence in Colts 2008 Training Camp, Dungy Says

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Around 2008 Training Camp, there have been no sightings of the Colts’ most-high profile player.

Peyton Manning’s not throwing passes. And he’s not running drills.

But Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy said fans and observers shouldn’t be fooled.

Manning is very, very present.

Manning, an eight-time Pro Bowl selection who never has missed a regular-season start in 10 NFL seasons, is in Terre Haute, Dungy said. And although Manning has yet to practice since undergoing surgery to remove an infected bursa sac from his left knee 10 days before camp, Dungy said he is as involved in the preparation process for the season as if he were participating in drills.

“He’s back here, going about his business,” Dungy said Tuesday between a pair of training camp practices at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

Dungy said Manning critiqued the Colts’ 30-16 loss to the Washington Redskins in the preseason-opening Hall of Fame Game Sunday night, a game started by Colts reserve quarterback

Jim Sorgi.

“He gave me his impressions of the game, so I think we’re getting back to normal,” Dungy said. “I think he was pleased with the way the offense moved the ball and disappointed we didn’t score more touchdowns in the red zone. That’s something we’ve been working on.

“I think he was like all of us, and felt like we had some things we could build on. He’s getting the practice tapes and getting transcripts.

“He knows what’s going on at every practice. He’s doing fine.”

Sorgi, who made his third career preseason start in place of Manning, played one series, leading a 16-play, 73-yard drive that resulted in a 26-yard field goal by kicker Adam Vinatieri. Sorgi completed 7 of 10 of passes for 66 yards on the drive, three times completing first-down converting passes – two 6-yarders to tight end Dallas Clark and a 10-yarder to Gijon Robinson.

Sorgi and the first-team offense were scheduled to play 12-to-15 plays and left after the long first series.

“I got a text (from Manning),” Sorgi said. “He said, ‘Good job’ and ‘keep going.’ He was proud of me. When you’re him and you do things as close to perfect as you possibly can all the time, you have the right to critique everybody else.”

Said Dungy, “He (Manning) is like he always is. It’s no different for him than if he was actually out there. That’s what makes him good. He’s analyzing every practice, everything we do. He’s putting himself in position so when he does come back it won’t be like he’s been totally away from it.

“He has been away from it physically, but mentally, he’s going through every practice.”

In other Colts news, Dungy said second-year cornerback Michael Coe will have exploratory knee surgery Wednesday.

“We’ll find out a little more tomorrow night where he is,” Dungy said.

Dungy also said rookie linebacker Philip Wheeler underwent knee surgery in the past few days and should begin rehabilitation in the “next day or so.”

Dungy said wide receivers Roy Hall (hamstring) and Pierre Garcon (hamstring) likely will not play when the Colts visit the Carolina Panthers in a preseason game Saturday. Dungy said defensive end Jeff Charleston (groin) may play Saturday.

“Those were three we weren’t really expecting after the game, but nothing that seems like it’s going to be too major,” Dungy said.

Linebackers Clint Session (calf) and Gary Brackett (groin), each of whom missed the preseason opener, may return toward the end of the week, Dungy said.

“We might get them back,” Dungy said. “We’ll see how they’re doing, but not early in the week, for sure.”

The Colts were off Monday following Sunday’s loss to Washington. They will practice twice Wednesday and Thursday and one Friday before traveling to Carolina.

“It’s nice to get back and get going,” Dungy said. “It’s going to be a little bit of a short week for us playing Saturday after a Sunday game, but I think we have a lot of things to build on. We’re looking forward to using this week to try to improve and see if we can play just a little bit better Saturday than we did Sunday night.

“I was really pleased with the first time out, especially for a lot of our younger guys.”

Manning expected to play in opener

Report: Favre made calls to Vikings

From wire reports

July 23, 2008

Click here to find out more!

Indianapolis coach Tony Dungy is certain Peyton Manning's left knee will be ready for the Colts' season opener.

Yesterday, Dungy said he was optimistic the Colts' biggest question heading into training camp - Manning's knee - could be resolved quicker than most people expect. Dungy said his starting quarterback could play in the preseason.

Manning had surgery last week to remove an infected bursa sac, a procedure doctors said would require four to six weeks to heal.

Typically, Dungy defers to medical experts on injury matters, but he knows Manning well enough to realize keeping Manning off the field for six weeks might be tougher than the rehabilitation.

"I have talked to Peyton, and we're just following the doctor's instructions right now," Dungy said. "I'm hoping for four weeks, but if he's truly out six weeks, I think it will be hard to keep him out. However it goes, he'll be ready when he comes back."

Manning has not spoken publicly since having surgery July15 and is expected to take questions tomorrow when the Colts report to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind.

During the past decade, Manning has earned a reputation as one of the NFL's best and most durable quarterbacks. He has started all 160 regular-season games in his 10-year career, the second-longest streak of any quarterback in NFL history behind Brett Favre's record of 253.

Manning's absence might not hurt the Colts too much this summer because Dungy, offensive coordinator Tom Moore and associate head coach Jim Caldwell had already decided to limit how many snaps Manning, 32, would have in camp.

"It may be a blessing in disguise because Tom, Jim and I talked in June about giving Jim [sorgi] some extra work with the first group anyways," Dungy said. "Peyton would like to take every snap, but Jim [Caldwell] has scaled it back every year. It would be optimal to get a couple of weeks in, but if not I think we'll be able to go."

Manning won't be the Colts' only prominent player missing from Friday's first practice.

Dungy expects four other starters to join Manning on the physically-unable-to-perform list - safety Bob Sanders, last season's NFL Defensive Player of the Year; defensive end Dwight Freeney, the 2004 NFL sacks champion; guard Ryan Lilja; and linebacker Tyjuan Hagler. All are expected to be ready for the season-opener, Sept. 7 against the Chicago Bears.

and the rumor that scares the bejeesus out of me. Damn you unnamed sportsalk sources

Manning to miss 6-9 (not 4-6) to possibly season WARNING NO "CITE" QUOTES ANNONYMOUS SPORTSTALK LEAKS

XL950 Sports Talk radio just reported the a "annoymous" member of the Colts staff leaked that Peyton has an infection from his surgery and could miss the season if this doctors can not get the infection under controll. Please, does anyone have any more info about this???
if the station leaked it through a confidential source this could be legit

Latest report is Manning could miss 6-9 games this year becuase of the infection. A report from WBBM Radio in Chicago has the Colts looking into their QB situation with trade rumors the Colts signing Chad Pennington or even a trade. Another possibility is the Colts going to Quintin Gray as the starting QB.
even more suspect, but sunlight is the best disenfectant.Bursa sac injuries are bad, as their emoval itself is extremley debilitating. If it's a serious infection I could see the colts siding with the next 7 years are more important than getting him back on the field. And that scares me as my draft keeper list is due Fri.

Has anyone (reporter/fans) seen him walking around? Is he moving well, limping, wheel chair crutches? Anything? As far as I can tell, he had some surgery and moved to the moon.

Brady down?

Here in Terre Haute, where the Colts are about to conclude training camp Friday, there are (unconfirmed) rumors that Peyton may have to miss the regular-season opener.

My main source was a bar worker telling me that some Colts employees (not players) were having drinks and talking like the Sept. 7 game against the Bears and a few beyond might be in jeopardy for Peyton. I realize this falls into the category of a friend's cousin's ex-girlfriend's mechanic's etc. type of source, so I understand if people want to doubt it. In fact, I'm trying to doubt it myself.

For the person who asked if anybody has seen him walking around, the answer is no (at least not anybody that I know). Everything about Peyton during camp is a government secret.

I've still been taking him in some drafts, but I'm starting to wish I had selected better No. 2 QBs just in case . . .

Being a Colts fan and a Manning fantasy owner, I am concerned.

Was really hoping for more than this from the SP...

I need an inside scoop or something.

What's the play here? Now could be the perfect time to make a low-ball trade offer to a nervous Manning owner... But if he might really end up missing part or all of the season, maybe that back-fires?

Anyone considering trading away/for Peyton? What kind of offers would you accept/make?

Thanks for this. It's unconfirmed speculation but it's another source that's indicating missed time.

I would be shocked if Archie's boy doesn't at least start the opener.

Wouldn't Waynes ADP drop somewhat? Granted these are rumors and speculation but Manning seems to be slipping a bit but Wayne hasn't in most rankings.

I may just be confused.

I always thought Wayne was an underrated talent — remember when some people insisted Chris Chambers was better? — but what you're saying should be the case. Sorgi (or Gray) throwing to him isn't the same as Manning throwing to him.Yet I haven't noticed any drops in recent drafts. In fact, I keep drafting him whenever I get a chance, but maybe that's because I'm just a blind homer. ;)

I think if the Colts thought Manning might miss the season then they would be out trying to acquire a QB. Jim Sorgi isn't a starter period. They would have probably placed a call to GB last week for Favre to give him a one year run with the Colts. I'm not buying it.

The cost for Favre would have been too much for the Colts. But I thought they might inquire about Chad Pennington.

Anyway, I hope you're right, Ramblin Wreck.

who said he's missing the whole season?

I was listening to Sirius NFL Radio yesterday, and 2 shows both said Peyton was cleared of any chance of infection and will be fine. The bursa sac was not in a bad spot and no structural damage was done when it was removed.

For whatever its worth, they had Mort on the fantasy part of NFL live the other day and he specifically said that people should draft him as they normally would in any other year. He briefly noted that Manning is viewing tapes of all the practices and the surgery is a non-issue.

There are certainly some very conspicuous circumstances surrounding this whole Manning situation.

Understand that I'm only a curbside Manning/Colts fan and have no vested interest.

While I'm usually behind nearly any Mort report (and not necessarily doubting this one), I'm still a little troubled.

It would seem the Colts have placed Manning in the witness protection program, other than the fact that we know he's at home. Being kept entirely out of the public eye, and no clear reports as to what's really going on with him. I'm sorry, but this is strange. Away from the team, getting no work whatsoever. No real timetable being released or discussed.

We know there is no better student of the game, but what about his conditioning. He could at least be throwing to his receivers on the side at training camp.

Nothing. Crickets. All seems a little TOO quite to me. Too much mystery going on here for my taste. Especially considering the mystery surrounding Harrison nearly all of last year that we had to follow and try to figure out as to what was going on.

Maybe it's nothing, but it just seems there are too many questions not being answered to me.

You know what they say about ducks. If it looks like one, talks like one, walks like one,...

They may very well be "ducking" something here.

...and let's keep in mind that this came up "all-of-the-sudden."

Concern? Yes. Worry? That's up to you.

I know I'm nitpicking but I see this error all the time and it's really started to bug me.

Quiet - as in you don't hear much.

Quite - as in he's not quite healthy.

Now back to the

I am neither concerned nor worried. And Dungy's latest comments have me drafting him in every league I can, as normal.

It was Dungy's comments that continually threw us off-track with Harrison last year.Week after week after week. He'd have ya believing because of who he is, but it still wasn't getting Marvin on the field. No knock on Dungy whatsoever. He gets all of my respect and see him as today's Tom Landry in some respects. Class act all around.Just sayin'...

More "rumor" news from Terre Haute (home of the Colts until camp breaks Friday):

I just ran into an acquaintance of mine who works out reguarly at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology fitness center. He and his girlfriend said they saw Peyton limping "pretty bad" when they saw him in the weightroom. I guess that means Peyton has been doing at least some of his rehab work at Rose-Hulman.

They said Peyton was leaving pretty much right after they got there, so they didn't get to see him work out.

I asked how long ago and they said about a week ago, so Peyton might be walking better this week. Who knows?

Not much info here, but I figure every little bit helps.

This is just the kind of thing I'm talkin' about.

What's being reported in the media is one thing, but the word on the street is different.

There's reason for concern.

Let me get this straight:

We've got one side who blindly beleives pre-season coach-speak; I mean, it's not like coaches have ever intentionally misled us about players' injuries and timetables before, right?

And then we've got the other side going off of their girlfriend's sister's dog's previous owner's friend who thinks they saw someone who looks like Peyton limping "badly" at the gym?

Can we get some real information here!?

Why can't we get some recent video of Manning moving around?

I'm starting to get skeptical of Manning. I know he just had surgery on his plant knee, but it wasnt ever believed to be serious enough for him to miss the regular season. I've just heard too little of this situation to ease my concerns that he will be ready to go Week 1. Can anyone shed some light for me?

How about this direct quote from Coach Dungy:

"Is it easier to win without Peyton? No. It’s going to be tougher. But if it happens, we’ll believe that we can get it done."

I'm almost as worried about him losing mobility b/c of the missing bursa sac. I kept him in my league. (2nd round too much value) but will likely belooking to deal him, though not give him away.

It seems fans in Terre Haute (where camp just concluded) are mentally preparing for Sorgi to start the first game.

Thanks for the link. Although I'm not sure I'd say they're preparing for Sorgi. They just sound concerned. And truthfully, they are feeling this way 100% just on speculation and worry that what the Colts are officially saying is not true.Allen admitted that he’s nervous about Manning being able to play against the Bears next month, but his wife tried to calm him.

Granted, I trust what Bill Polian says about as far as I can throw him. But I also don't put a great deal of stock in Sue the Fan.

J

“I think he’ll start,” Sue Allen said of Manning. “I think he’ll play most of the game.”

Stichter offered a similar opinion, although he acknowledged that he doesn’t really know for sure.

“Yeah, he’ll play,” Stichter predicted. “He may not be at full speed at first, but he’ll be good enough to be effective.”

But if Manning isn’t ready to start the nationally televised opener and longtime back-up Jim Sorgi lines up under center instead, Stichter insists he won’t panic.

“I think they’ll stick more to the run,” he said, “but there won’t be huge changes [in the offense].”

“I hope he’s ready,” Mazeqie weighed in on Manning. “But if he’s not ready, I feel comfortable with Sorgi taking over. He’s been here long enough.”

It's time to be concerned. While Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning has reportedly been wearing out his physical therapist in recovering from having an infected bursa sac removed from his left knee July 14th, he hasn't practiced in the five weeks since. Although there is absolutely nothing mechanically wrong within the knee, the removal of the sac exposes the knee to more bone-on-bone friction. At the time of the surgery, it was announced as a four-to-six-week recovery. Today is the five-week anniversary of the surgery, and Manning practicing is not imminent. Manning is still working on range-of-motion exercises. More info available at the supplied link.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writ...tml?eref=si_nfl

this is a problem whether people want to admit it or not.

He hasn't even practice yet? there first game is in less than 3 weeks!!!
