Morency to miss 2 weeks with sore knee (1 Viewer)

Running back Vernand Morency's knee injury is more serious than initially believed, and he likely will miss two weeks of practice, Packers coach Mike McCarthy said today.

Morency hasn't practiced since Saturday. McCarthy declined to discuss specifics of the injury, which was described Sunday by General Manager Ted Thompson as a contusion.

The Packers' first preseason game is 12 days away, so Morency likely will miss that game.

Other injury updates:

-- Rookie guard Allen Barbre sat out today's practice with a hamstring injury and defensive tackle Daniel Muir left with a recurring ankle injury.

-- McCarthy said he hopes defensive tackles Ryan Pickett and Johnny Jolly, both of whom failed conditioning tests on Friday, will practice Tuesday.

-- Wide receiver Donald Driver, who has a shoulder injury, also could practice in the next day or two, McCarthy said.

The fact that they want him to heal up means they are going to be counting on him for production. If he was really in jeopardy of making the team or sliding into the back up role, they would be pushing him along. No reason to push someone that you know a lot about already, probably will give them a better idea of Brandon Jackson and what he can offer them as a rookie.

ask Cedric Benson how that worked out last year.

 Sorry, that makes no sense at all to me. I see nothing in that link where they were taking it cautious with him. What I saw was an injury that they thought was less severe and now they are saying it is more severe and he is out for 2 weeks.I think you are reading way too much of your opinion into this as the coach specifically declined to comment on the injury itself. Why would any team risk bringing back anyone too early in late July/early August, whether it is the #1 or #2 RB, especially when there may not be a clear #1?Also, how does giving Brandon Jackson a better opportunity to showcase his talent help Morency? If Jackson sucks and he was a bad pick, it doesn't matter, but if he is indeed better, maybe the extra time displaces Morency. It sure can't help Morency.

This is my take as well. It won't shock me if emerges as the #1 when camp ends.
C'mon David, I expect more from you. Have you seen Herron play? He's an ok 3rd down RB, but he's a step down from when Green Bay had Tony Fisher - who bombed in St. Louis. Herron simply isn't athletic, powerful or "shifty" enough to be a starting RB. While it's possible that he's #1 when camp ends, if he's still #1 in week 4, the Packers are hosed.

There's no way to spin this in a positive way for Morency. He needs the reps and he's not so skilled or established that someone else can't step in and replace him as the presumed starter. I hope for his sake (and mine - I'm a dynasty Morency owner) that he can return in time for that first preseason game and acquit himself well.

I think you found the sarcasm buried in my post.

Take it for what it's worth:

I've been hearing from a few people who have attended every camp practice that Noah Herron has been a real stand out thus far. By far the best during blitz drills, and looking great in other areas too. They seem to believe there is definitely a possibilty that he is used more than just a 3rd down or situational back.

Another guy they say to keep an eye on is FB Corey White. He's also been looking good and has been given quite a bit of work with both running and catching from the backfield. He's also done well in blitz pickups, and could end up being a goalline back and do a lot more than just blocking.

Brandon Jackson continues to get the most reps, but he's been struggling with blitz pickups and has gotten steamrolled by Hawk a couple of times. During non-blitz plays, most have been quite impressed with his speed and quickness, and also his ability to cut and make people miss.

makes the scuttlebutt about trade talks regarding LJ, MORE real/believable..This GB team doesn't have an experience RB, and Morency is simply too injury-prone to be counted on.

look out for Michael Turner , could be headed to GB, too..
With the 2nd round picks (Jackson and Henry) in GB and TN not really lighting it up, makes you wonder if both teams wished they made a deal with SD before the draft, huh? Sure, it might have cost them a little more, but if both of those picks end up wasted, I would have ponied up a little more to feel like my running game was solid instead of a weak spot.

According to one beat guy at each major paper that covers the Packers (GBPG and JS), the Packers front office feels that Turner would not be a good fit for the Packers' system. Take that for what it's worth... :football:

Well, they were wrong then, huh? :tfp: ETA: In all seriousness, that sounds like the CYA story though. Anyone covering GB has got to ask about Turner since GB was linked in the trade discussions and Jackson hasn't looked good and Morency is out a month. What do you think the front office would say? If he wasn't a good fit, then there would have been no reason for them to have ever gotten mentioned in the trade talks. They would have known and decided not to pursue anything. Now that all this has happened, that sounds like a good story to tell a beat guy so you don't look as bad.

Nope. These quotes came from just after the draft. I'll try to find the links, (one was an Insider chat on JSOnline, so may not be searchable) but Turner was never seriously considered by the Packers, again, according to one 'scout' and somebody in 'the personel department'....

Sportsline reporting Morency is likely out a month, with a knee ligament strain..

hope they have SD's front office on speed dial ( for Michael Turner) , or , the Chiefs front office ( LJ)...

I don't blame Favre for acting like a brat, GB has done NOTHING to make themselves better, they're running out of time with Favre, and god help us, the Aaron Rogers era is about to begin.. :football:

This team did nothing to surround Favre with talent, they should have just traded him or granted him an outright release..they obviously view themselves as being in full rebuilding mode, they've dumped Ahman Green and have faith in a never-has-been named Vernand Morency, and a rookie RB with little college experience at the position..

It certainly isn't looking good for the Packers run game. Morency did look good in limited opp's last year but to turn over the keys to him and a rookie may end up in a lost year for the Pack.
