Cliff notes: the writer hypothesizes that the Chiefs will try and re-sign Mitchell with the intent of possibly moving him to an outside spot. Would that be SLB or WLB you think?

Also - looks like there might be some turnover at both safety positions. Are either of these guys, Pollard or Page, someone that should be scooped up off the free agent wire in dynasty leagues?

Defense

The Chiefs in the last few years of **** Vermeil’s time as head coach thought they were one or two good players away from building a solid defense. So they lavished free-agent riches on players such as Bell, Knight and Law.

They soon will pay for this strategy. Bell has by all measures been a lousy signing. Knight and Law might have made sense but don’t run well enough to be productive players in Edwards’ system.

“We’re in a period of transition,” president/general manager Carl Peterson said. “(Edwards) had his first year now with this football team, and a lot of it he inherited. He knows what he wants to do, and he expresses to me and our player personnel people where he wants to go. Now he’s had a full year of evaluation of his players and certainly has his thoughts, and I want those thoughts because he is the captain of the ship.”

The biggest issue for the Chiefs is what to do with Bell. Because his scheduled salary of slightly more than $3 million is guaranteed, Bell would cost the Chiefs more against their salary cap to release than keep.

Middle linebacker Kawika Mitchell is a potential free agent, and the Chiefs appear inclined to try to re-sign him. If they do, Mitchell might move to one of the outside positions. The Chiefs would then look to free-agency or the draft for a middle linebacker.

The Chiefs will again be in the market for a high-quality defensive tackle. Unless one gets released, it appears none will be available in free-agency.

They appear to have little choice but to try again with a high draft pick. They would then try to re-sign at least two of their potential free agents in James Reed, Ron Edwards and Jimmy Wilkerson. Sims is probably finished with the Chiefs.

Jarrad Page and Bernard Pollard are the likely starters at safety, making Knight and Wesley expendable. Look for the Chiefs to draft a cornerback and prepare him to take Law’s starting spot.

My thoughts:

1. Pollard may be moved to WLB. He has taken very few snaps at safety.

2. I doubt Mitchell goes to the outside. First I heard of that. I doubt the Chiefs leave Bell, Fox and Griffin on the bench ...

3. Law may move to safety.

4. Knight will likely hit the bench or be gone.

So assuming Knight is out of the starting lineup, do you think the safeties will be Law/Wesley or Law/Page?Is Page a guy that should be looked at?

I don't see how it makes much sense to re-sign Mitchell then move him outside when you've got two solid OLB options in Derrick Johnson and Keyaron Fox and no other obvious MLB option already on the roster. If the Chiefs wanted to swap roles with the new coaching staff, you'd think they'd have done it last off-season despite Mitchell's solid 2005 season. There's been too much praise of Fox's play to think he won't be a starter outside in 2007 and there's never been any mention of moving DJ inside. I think it's more likely that Mitchell is elsewhere than a Chief OLB next year.

Along the same lines, moving Pollard to WLB probably doesn't make a lot of sense at this point either. Too many other options there and, unless the Chiefs have clearly seen that he can't hold up at safety, he should've already been taking snaps at backer this year. Page is definitely a viable option. His ceiling is probably dependent on whether Pollard gets the SS job and how much run support opportunity Page would be left in the FS spot.

Of course, this is Herman Edwards so a confusing game of musical defenders is always possible.

If someone pushes Bell from the WLB it is going to be Fox not Mitchell. Mitchell has been too good at MLB for him to move now. Pollard and Page might both start next year. Page is the better of the two and will almost certainly start next year. I have never heard anyone suggest that Pollard is moving to LB before. If he does move there is no way he makes the team with as many good young LBs they have. CB depth is a real weak spot. If one of the starters got hurt they would be in real trouble. Law is not moving yet.

I am not saying they will move Pollard to WLB, just that they may. It has been discussed by the Chiefs in the past.

From the Chiefs draft report:

Pollard is a blue chip prospect with a blue-collar work ethic. It is very rare to see a player of his caliber also toil on special teams, but it is not only a role that he relishes, but takes great pride in his ability. One of the top kick blockers in the collegiate ranks, he has been so effective in run support, that he could also be considered a possible outside linebacker at the next level in a Cover-2 alignment.

Pollard did not get a lot of looks at safety except down by the goal line.

I'm just sayin ...

Bell will cost 3M in salary. He is signed through 2011 so cutting him could be an expensive endeavour (depending on his original signing bonus). He is a holdover from the previous regime and 3M is a lot to pay a back up - if Fox actually pushes him from the spot.

Don't look for them to move Law to Safety; the Chiefs will have Wesley, Page, & Pollard at Safety, but not much quality at CB. I think Wesley will stick around, primarily because the Chiefs can't get rid of a lot of salaries all at once because it would be cap crippling.

Regarding the safeties, I think Sammie Knight will be released and replaced by Page. Whenever SS Knight or FS Wesley missed time this past year, it was Page who filled in, not Pollard. This was quite surprising since Pollard was a 2nd round pick and Page a 6th round pick, plus Page was supposed to be the future FS and Pollard the future SS, yet Page filled in at SS. Heck Page even started at OLB for Bell during the playoffs. This tells me how high they are on Page.

I also wouldn't look for both Page and Pollard to start next year. The Chiefs pass rush is not good enough to protect two inexperienced safeties.

To answer the question whether Mitchell is a good NFL linebacker - I'd say yes. Although, I put him in a category with Denver's Wilson and Indy's Brackett. Heputs up solid tackle numbers, but not many big plays like sacks, passes defended, interceptions, or fumbles. I didn't check the numbers; just stating my opinion. Puts him at LB#3/4.

I think the Chiefs think more highly of Mitchell than the rest of the league, thus I look for the Chiefs to resign him but also look for the Chiefs to upgrade and/or add depth through free agency and the draft. Not a lot of upgrades available though FA - Briggs is about it.

Bell has a guaranteed contract, so releasing him would apply the whole guaranteed amount, plus the unamortized bonus, against the cap. This is why Bell has not already been released and may also be why he's not released this year.

 Also he was a 7th round pick and fell because he was drafted in baseball. He graded out higher than Pollard, who was a reach in the 2nd round.

94 Jarrad Page (37): This late-round draft pick is quite a playmaker. He picked off three passes in the regular season and baited Peyton Manning into an interception in the playoffs. Page will be a day-one starter next season. He has terrific instincts, isn’t afraid to fill running lanes and could develop into an on-field leader. Might be the next Deron Cherry.
May go pick this guy up.
