Official 3rd pick thread (1 Viewer)

It seems like many people are going with the Rb, WR,WR,Rb, QB/TE approach.

I have done some mocks and taking best available never turns out well. By sticking to this plan my teams seem better.

What do you think?

If I end up with the 3rd pick I will basically prey that MJD falls to me.
I'd say that is a 50-50 proposition.ADP will go for sure. After that, it comes down to whether the person picking has a man crush on Forte, Turner, or one of the other big RB's ranked near the top.

I was thinking those exact odds to be honest. I a lot of guys will get caught up in last year and take Turner. Others will fall in love with the Cutler move to Chi and in turn fall in love with Forte. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with either of those options. But MJD is the guy I have #1 on my board.

I'm sure there will be at least one or two people out there who are planning that DeAngelo repeats what he did last year as well.

Good luck, hope it works out for you. I have the number 2 pick and I'm not even thinking twice about taking MJD. Put some feelers out there man. See if you can move into the #2 spot, shouldn't cost too much. If MJD is your preseason guy, you miss him by one pick, and he explodes this season...you'll be hating yourself. As far as draft strategy goes, I'm looking at taking MJD #2 and then going WR, WR. After that, I think I will subscribe to the BAP philosophy.

Just found out about my #3 pick, and there hasn't been much talk about this position it seems.

Here's my thoughts;

1st round - 3rd overall

if MJD were for some reason available, he's then a no brainer, but not counting on it

currently leaning towards Turner - thinking that touches will still be very high, hoping for more involvment in passing game. not overly excited with this pick but trading out of this position is not an option for me

then in order, considering Forte, Jackson, LT and Williams - all with other potential question marks

2nd round - 22nd overall

I believe in heavy RB roster, and will probably go for another, especially considering that I am not overly enthused with 1st pick (whoever it turns out to be)

hoping that Portis or Jacobs will still be there (mocks I've taken support this so far)

would also consider Pierre Thomas now with Bush looking real iffy if those 2 are gone

longshot - if Wayne and Manning are both still there, possible hookup looms - take Wayne and hope Manning falls (I know the 2 drafters at 1 & 2 and this it possible)

if those RBs are not there, and longshot not there either, then take best WR - Colsten, SSmith, Bouldin, Jennings

3rd round - 27th overall

assuming I now have 2 RBs, WR is a must here. Hoping for Colsten, SSmith, Bouldin, Jennings, in that order - the mocks I've taken appear to show that this is a bit risky and might get stuck with someone like Owens or Ochinco as your top WR - this is definitely a key spot and need to be monitoring the draft for how quickly WRs are being taken

otherwise (1RB and 1WR taken), go back to RB - maybe Ronnie Brown

4th round - 46th overall

this is where you must review what others around you have taken, especially at #1 and #2

this year, I would like to get a top 7 QB (brees, brady, manning, rodgers, warner, mcnabb and rivers), as I believe the dropoff after that really hurts. at this point, probably 4 or 5 QBs will have been taken. I don't think there is any chance that less than 7 QBs will be taken when it comes around to the 6th round (70th pick). So you need to take one either here or at 51st. If either of the drafters at #1 or #2 have a QB (or best case that both do), you can chance it and wait, otherwise you need to grab the QB here. I would love to have Warner, but McNabb and then Rivers would suffice.

If you are chancing it, take another WR.

If top 7 QB's are already taken, take best WR and think about picking up 2 QBs shortly - 6th and 7th rounds - sort of a QBBC but with starters - say Shaub and Palmer for example.

5th round - 51st overall

either taking your QB here, or best WR

from then on, pretty much best player available and fill approprient positions

possibly target TE in 6th or 7th but don't go overboard

next to last round K

last round - sleeper pick

i think it smart to have a plan as it helps avoid any panic, but must be flexible throughout. any thoughts . . .

That is very close to my plan. thanks for you input. It should be allot of help. i am printing it off and putting it in my draft folder.

If the person with the #2 pick wants MJD he wont make the trade. If he does not there is no need to trade.

I'm drafting out of the #3 hole, and I like that team A LOT. Great drafting.

I agree my mock teams look very close to this. only difference is mcfadden won't fall to me in my league but everyone else should

If the person with the #2 pick wants MJD he wont make the trade. If he does not there is no need to trade.
Or, the person with the #2 pick is on the fence between MJD and someone else, with a very small lean towards MJD, and would happily trade down one slot for a better pick later on.

I am looking to move from 9 to 3 (I would get Philip Rivers for Owen Daniels in exchange :lmao: )

obviously....the #3 guy definately doesn't want the spot

Considering Turner, Forte, Slaton, and DAngelo are all retained as keepers, I don't blame him.

And, our keepers/scoring rules are faaar from standard. I am considering

1. Taking Brees or Brady - creating a run on QBs and hoping for some other RBs to fall

2. Taking MBIII

What's wrong with Barber here? He looks good in the preaseason.

Here is how my draft went. I was real excited about MJD falling to me. Jackson was picked first. There is an obvious problem with my team. RB depth. Jones is not who I had in mind for my 2nd rb but two different teams picked rbs in there first 4 rounds! We can only start 3 total. There teams are not that good but they really messed me up by doing that. Both teams ended up with 7 rb total! All and all I was happy with my team. Instead of drafting clark I should have went with Bush and had Bush and Jones as my number 2 and played match up. that is the only thing I would change. I hope it helps someone

Here is what I drafted the other night form the 3 spot in a non-ppr 10 team league(douple serpintine order) All td's 6pts.

15.(148) Edgerrin James

Overall I'm pretty happy with this draft. My Wr's are a little light ina start 3 league but I can live with this team.

I might have soem decent trade bait down the road as well.

My Wr's are a little light ina start 3 league ...
Same thing happened to me. Here's my draft in a 12-team non-PPR (hybrid standard/distance scoring), shallow rosters:1.03 - Williams, DeAngelo CAR RB2.10 - Rodgers, Aaron GBP QB3.03 - Smith, Steve CAR WR4.10 - Gonzalez, Tony ATL TE5.03 - Johnson, Larry KCC RB6.10 - Driver, Donald GBP WR7.03 - Benson, Cedric CIN RB8.10 - Hester, Devin CHI WR9.03 - Holt, Torry JAC WR10.10 - Hixon, Domenik NYG WR11.03 - Hightower, Tim ARI RB12.10 - Garrard, David JAC QB13.03 - Finley, Jermichael GBP TE14.10 - Jets, New York NYJ Def15.03 - Rackers, Neil ARI PKThe first two picks in the first round were AP and Brees. The info source I am using lists D. Williams as the top-rated player on the board. So I left MJD, Michael Turner, and Matt Forte on the table.I took Aaron Rodgers low in the second, but I could have waited and took Rivers -- Rivers went in the mid-4th.

Appreciate these posts, very valuable. Just had mine.

My main decision was Smith over Jennings and Wayne, and then Roddy over Boldin. I have a lot of bye week blues because for the most part ignored it and yahoo has a weird layout with where they display the bye week when drafting. I took a lot of fliers on RB's that might breakout as you can tell.

1. (3) Maurice Jones-Drew

2. (18) Steve Smith

3. (23) Roddy White

4. (38) Pierre Thomas

5. (43) Chad Ochocinco

6. (58) Willie Parker

7. (63) Ray Rice

8. (78) Santonio Holmes

9. (83) Donald Brown

10. (98) Barrett Ruud

11. (103) Ben Roethlisberger

12. (118) John Carlson

13. (123) James Davis

14. (138) London Fletcher

15. (143) Carson Palmer

16. (158) Joe Flacco

17. (163) Jermichael Finley
