I picked this guy up last season in a dynasty league. He was good enough to make A.Pittman expendable who the Saints drafted with a decent pick. He has done nothing but look good with every oppurtunity he has had, including a 100yd rush 120yd recieving game in his only start during week 17. With Deuce's knee rehab and potential cut a possibility, and Stecker being 33 years old, how high is everybody on this kid? Im loving his chances at a significant role moving forward

The Saints and Deuce McAllister (torn ACL) have agreed to delay the $1 million roster bonus McAllister is due until April 15.

The bonus was originally scheduled for March 15, but the club wants to see how Deuce heals before committing. McAllister, rehabbing from September surgery on both knees, plans to be ready for post-draft camps. Why would Deuce agree to waiting a month if he didn't think that he would be able to play? Do you think he had to agree to the month delay or he would have got cut in March?Everything I have heard says that he is on target with returning for the pre-season work outs.

yes. I think the market for Deuce would be extremely poor with him rehabbing from two bad knees and a deep draft class at the position. The Saints have the leverage, and I dont think Deuce was in a position to make any demands. How much is he costing the Saints? What are the chances they will make him restructure or cut him?
 
I have a feeling Deuce may restructure in order to stay with the team. But I do agree on Thomas, he DEFINITELY has talent. At this point he may even be the best RB on the team until Reggie can learn to run between the tackles and Deuce can (if he ever does) recover from his knee surgery. The problem is with all the money they have in Reggie, I don't think he will get too many carries even if Deuce doesnt come back. They are gonna force feed Reggie the ball until he excels or until he fails enough times for them to realize he is not an every down back. If Pierre ever gets his chance, he will excel

good points. They have a lot invested in R.Bush so it makes sense that he will have a significant role in the backfield. Im thinking that the best case scenario is that Thomas can become what Deuce was a couple of years ago, which is a very productive rb in a timeshare with Bush. Im inclined to agree with you though that Deuce will restructure
 
I really, REALLY like Thomas. If you forget he was undrafted & just watch the tape of his play in the pros as well as college, you come away very impressed. I believe he'll eventually be a feature back for somebody.

stecker signed 1-year contract. he's been special teams standout pretty much his entire career. he played well when pressed into service but that is about it.

deuce will be given a chance to return. they are willing to wait and see. they're not in any hurry and neither is deuce, i think. if he's progressing then all is well.

the saints are loaded at the RB position. thomas was a fan favorite and were excited to see what he could do given a legit shot at starting. if deuce is slow to recover then he could split time with reggie. i do not believe for a second that they would look at another RB via the draft or free agency.

thanks for insight. Hopefully he will get his chance as early as this season. Guess we will have to see what happens with Deuce. Do you think there is a legitimate chance the Saints cut him?

sure, there is a chance but i'd doubt it. if deuce is showing progress then they aren't likely to cut him.

Due approx 3.5M + 1M roster. Its my understanding that in some way he was gone if he hadn't agreed to move the bonus. I think it was in both parties' best interests to move it anyway, so I doubt it was a difficult negotiation.As for Thomas... saintfool got it right when he said he was a fan favorite. Lots of people like this guy... but in the exact same way that lots of fans like any player that shows talent. Of course, those same fans canonizing Thomas as the second coming of Deuce are the same fans that believe a certain Louisiana native and draft board-climbing Tulane RB is God's gift to the team in that third round spot. Fans are fickle.IMO there are a great deal of things that need to go right for Pierre to make an impact as a valid fantasy player.1) Bush needs to show ( for certain, and finally ) that he **cannot** run between the tackles. Pierre's hope at fantasy productivity relies on Bush being set as the "wildcard" player that he was in 2006, and its a certainty that Bush gets a chance to prove himself again before Thomas does.2) Deuce needs to stay hurt. This is another guy that will get a shot before Thomas, so ( at least for 2008 ) McAllister cannot be involved in the game plan in any significant capacity if Thomas wants to see a FBG lineup.3) Deuce needs to get healthy. Doesn't make a lot of sense with #2, but Deuce needs to keep the front office's hopes up past April 26 and make them look in another direction. Then point #2 kicks in.This will not be an easy road, especially not for '08. I own Thomas in a couple of leagues, but I'm doing nothing more than holding him as a hopeful fan.Additionally, I can't share saintfool's certainty that they won't look to a RB in the draft. I had guess that Peyton would be looking at a new toy in the draft before free agency, and now that they've gotten some defense... I'm certain of it. I will admit I've backed down and am not sure its a RB anymore, but I'm still leaning that way.

Because they told him "agree to this, or your cut today." Duece is toast... Bush / Thomas will be RBBC; and it will be more Bush. he was fine until he hurt his knee. The Saints where 0 - 4 w/ Duece / Bush combo. Went 4 - 4 when it was just Bush and after that he torn up his knee.

When Deuce McAllister had ACL surgery on his left knee last September, he also had a microfracture procedure on his troublesome right knee.

It was originally reported as arthroscopic, but Deuce confirmed it was actually microfracture, "The ACL is fine. We just want to be careful with the right knee as far as the microfracture is concerned." Some microfracture procedures are more severe than others, and though McAllister's was not extensive, this news explains his slow recovery time.Source: New Orleans Times-Picayune

:goodposting: Exactly.Fact remains the Saints pushed the roster bonus back. And that's the only real point that needs to be made here. Deuce had no choice in the matter. If everything was peachy, they would of just paid him. I think they'd be silly not to restructure his contract big time with Thomas there. Anyone that saw Thomas vs. Chicago came away impressed. There's little doubt he could quite easily replace Deuce (and probably put up much better stats).

If Deuce won't restructure, let him go. He won't have a great deal of interest on the market. He'll get a $1-$2 million perhaps with incentives. Rb's are too replaceable than to overpay a 29 (?) year old RB with 2 restructured knees.

Bush was fine?? He had less than 4.0 ypc..he never carried the ball 20 times all year..rushed for 581 yards and only scored 4 TDs all year..he also had 8 fumbles, 3 of which he lost, 1 which was a back-breaker. Believe it or not Aaron Stecker was much more impressive as a RB than Bush was. Bush did have 417 receiving yards on 73 receptions for pedestrian 5.7 yds per catch. At this point, Reggie looks like Eric Metcalf, not someone who deserves to be the bigger dog in a RBBC.

Thanks for the information. I would really be surprised if Deuce is able to make big contribution this season and we already saw that Bush cannot be a primary back. That leaves Stecker and Thomas. It IS possible that Stecker will be used more but I really think he was signed primarily for Special Teams and deep depth. Thomas will be splitting carries with Bush and will be the primary, between the tackle and goal line back.
 
Deuce McAllister has been the face of the Saints in Jackson, where they have conducted pre-season work-outs for the previous two seasons. It will be interesting if he is indeed cut loose. Info on local New Orleans radio has twice within the past two weeks commented that his rehab was progressing well and that he was expected back prior to pre-season work-outs.

Just me, but I would expect Deuce to listen and possibly go along with a contract adjustment to stay with the Saints.

Whoa, slow down there cowboy. Deuce has been invaluable to that offense. He's a bulldozer and a very special back, injuries have slowed him down but even coming off a knee surgery in 2006 he was a beast. I've been impressed by Thomas in all his preseason and regular season games, on special teams and at RB, but to say he EASILY replaces Deuce and will more than likely be the better back....to say you're jumping the gun would be an understatement

I think Deuce is toast. Approaching 30yrs old and coming off 2 knee surgeries cant be good

Deuce may have been invaluable in the past. Was a pretty good (though overpaid) RB. Very special (I reserve that for HOF RB's, something Deuce isn't).Writing is on the wall for Deuce. He'll be taking a substantial pay cut to remain there. :lmao:

 
bumping for thoughts after the draft. I have to believe anybody holding a P.Thomas/Deuce combo must be feeling better after NO didnt address RB in the draft

thats interesting. Havent heard that. I listened to an interview, and P.Thomas said he was up to 215-220ilbs from 205 last year. I still think Thomas has a good shot to be productive in 08, but if Alexander signs there obviously that would change my opinion

Bush is the man in ppr leagues, but after seeing him last year, I think hes more suited to playing the way the saints used him his rookie year. So i agree that there will be a 2 back system in NO again
 
Ive been offered a low 2nd rd rookie pick for him and turned it down. I think unless somebody overpays with a pick in the 1.5-1.8 range Im holding on to him

low meaning early, as in 2.01 to 2.03 or low in value meaning late, like 2.10-2.12?

this was reported incorrectly.apparently, lombardi at nfln suggested the saints contact SA rather than reporting any contact between the team and player. same was said about lamont jordan too.
 
There's no point in the Saints signing another running back because they hardly ever run the ball.

You have Deuce, PT, Reggie, and Stecker, and only about 25 running plays a game. Even if Deuce doesn't play a single down that's still spreading it out a lot.

Pierre does look like starting material though and a small part of me wishes the Saints had just decided to cut ties with Deuce. I like the guy but every time he touches the ball you feel like he's gonna hurt himself.

actually I think it was a mid 2nd. 2.05-2.06.

If they dont bring in another RB, I think they will let Pierre and Deuce compete for carries in training camp. Assuming Deuce can go full speed by then, which isnt a given
 
Mendenhall could not bump Pierre Thomas as the starter @ Illinois.

Seeing the forest thru the treest, I LOVE Pierre Thomas as the future 2 down back in New Orleans.

I was able to see plenty of both running behind some of the worst offensive lines the Illinois program has ever produced. Plenty of talent here, excellent receiver, see game versus Bears on youtube for proof....Should get a shot at being a starter somewhere if NO doesn't keep him stuffed behind Bush during the prime of his career...
 
Anyone think Pierre will get the "man" yards this year for the Saints or will Deuce resume his customary role?

he's going to get carries, especially if deuce isn't 100% by the time the season starts. however, they have reggie too. pierre might be a player for the future once deuce moves on.

Pierre will be getting some snaps. no doubt. If you watch his video on Youtube he talks about Drew Brees telling him they're gonna use him more often, but if Deuce can return to form, which is a huge question mark at the moment, I think Deuce gets most of the 1st and 2nd down work with Pierre coming in from time to time. If Deuce isnt ready to go though, I think Bush and Pierre will be splitting 1st and 2nd down work with Bush getting the 3rd down work as well. Probably like 60/40 split for Bush, maybe even 65/35...Bush is gonna have to prove he cant be a consistent runner before anyone else gets more carries

Saints coach Sean Payton believes third-down performance is one of Pierre Thomas' strong suits.

Thomas did a lot of pass blocking in college. Reggie Bush is the Saints' top third-down back, but Thomas could be another option in those situations. With Deuce McAllister "extremely" limited at OTAs, Thomas is sharing first-team reps with Bush. He remains a sleeper for a big role this season.

Any Saints homers have any interesting news on the situation? I still have a tough time believing Deuce can hold off P.Thomas

I basically traded him straight up for Jordy Nelson in a PPR dynasty. Maybe he's the next Willie Parker or maybe he's the next Wali Lundy. There was nothing spectacular about him as a prospect, so my attitude is that I'd rather sell him now and get something decent then get left holding the bag if he fades into obscurity.

Maybe he becomes nothing but you could say the same thing about a rookie WR that has never played a down in the NFL. Also, Nelson is behind 3 other talented WRs at the moment. I dont know that what youre getting is any more or less likely to fade into obscurity. I like PTs current situation a million times more than Jordy Nelsons, but maybe thats just me.

Maybe he becomes nothing but you could say the same thing about a rookie WR that has never played a down in the NFL. Also, Nelson is behind 3 other talented WRs at the moment. I think a high second round WR drafted by a GM with great recent success picking players at the position has a much better chance of long term success in the NFL than a second year undrafted free agent RB who happened to beat out an overrated fourth round rookie and have one good game in his rookie season.

I think we might see them both on 3rd. Pierre's a better blocker and has good hands. Bush can line up at WR.

Ok well hes still 4th wr at best for now, and hes likely 3rd wr long term with an unproven QB thowing him the ball. Lets look at a few facts surounding PT1)In his only start which was the last game of the season he became the only player in franchise history to have 100yds rush 100yds recieving in a single game 2) Made 2007 4th rd pick A.Pittman expendable in preseason last year 3) Team MVP at U.Illinois where he kept R.Mendenhall on the bench 4) Saints did not address RB in 2008 draft, and have yet to sign any RB FAs 5) Deuce is close to 30 and is coming off 2 major knee surgeriesI disagree with your opinion that Nelson has a much better chance at long term success than Thomas, but we will have to wait and see on that.

Deuce isn't going anywhere. He's doing fine. I expect him to be ready for training camp.

I have Thomas in a new dynasty we just drafted and I also plan to take him in a free agent/ rookie draft I have coming up. I like the kids potential and I think he will eventually have a focal role in that offense. For now, and this season, I think he will get his touches but he wont be getting enough to really be a consistent fantasy producer. First off, Deuce's recovery is going well and there is every indication he will be ready to go week 1, and second Bush will be given every chance and then a few more to prove he is not capable of being the primary back

One of the things that often keeps young backs on the bench is blocking: it's definitely a positive to see that Thomas is good at it.
