QB Simms Getting Bad Reputation

Stephen F. Holder, St. Petersburg Times - FULL ARTICLE

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Chris Simms is gradually gaining a reputation among defenders as someone whose passes can be swatted at the line of scrimmage. That much is obvious by the way linemen seemingly come into games looking for opportunities. It happened three times in the two quarters Simms played during Saturday night's game vs. Jacksonville. And it happened Aug. 19 against the Dolphins. What's more, it's been happening with great frequency since last season, when Simms had 5.1 percent of his passes batted down, which was the most in the NFL.

They were all on three step drops, tampa does this a lot (according to Gruden) and it will happen. Not much to really worry about.

So one out of every 20 of his passes gets swatted down? It's better than throwing picks.

Who knows? Maybe his rushing stats will go up once he realizes he can get linemen to leave their feet on a pump fake.

:D

Interesting. I've heard Jaworski say at least 3 times in the last 2 weeks that "Within 2 years Simms is going to be a star QB in the NFL." The batted ball thing doesn't necessarily mean much though. Afterall, McNabb gets a couple balls a game batted down and he's considered a top QB in the game.

That article is the final indication that the regular season needs to start ASAP so we can all start talking about stuff that matters....

 Until I can see a ranking, by percentage, of the rest of the league, the 5.1% stat has no meaning. For all I know, the best QB in the league at not having his passes swatted is Alex Smith, with only 4.9% of his passes getting swatted, and everyone else falling in between that tiny range.

I remember watching the game last week and hearing the announcers pull that stat out. I guess Mr. Holder was watching the same game, and taking a shortcut on doing his own work.

I think Simms has a bright future, especially as long as he's working w/ Gruden. I don't care for the guy, but I'd be surprised if he wasn't a top-10 QB year in and year out from 2007 going forward.

in addition to the 3 step drops, it probably doesn't help that he constantly telegraphs which direction and who he will throw to, a lot of plays he just stares down one receiver's route the whole way with his eyes, head, and body.

It always seemed to me that while at UT he had an extraordinary amount of passes swatted, esp. for a man of height. I guess it isn't a huge deal unless they are getting swatted up.

Yeah, watched the game on NFL network and they mentioned that TB is three step drop team and with that comes swatted balls.

Simms has looked good this year. TB Offense = Sleeper.

I caught some of the Bucs pre-season game versus the Jags on the weekend and saw Simms being interviewed about DL's batting down a lot of his throws. Simms was saying that in his 3-stop drops this is a problem, but he also mentioned that TB's scheme uses a lot of 3-step drops so it's just something they'll have to deal with.

Am I making too much out of this, or do you think this will be problematic for Simms and also the entire Bucs passing game this season?

Not only this but watch him closely and you'll notice that he like many mediocre NFL QB's can only look at one side of the field or get to his 2nd look. From my prespectiev this is tell tale sign that Simms is not ready to put up decent numbers this year. Thus the entire Buc offense will suffer. Beware C Williams owners as this is shaping up to look likt Mcghee all over. Plus you add in Alstott vulturing short TD's and Pittman in on 3rd down leaves Caddy owners crying this year.....

They have been focusing on this, but I guess it's still a problem. Gruden even had a pvc pipe man constructed that is used as an obsticle for Chris Simms in practice He is just going to have to learn to deal with it, because we all know dinosaurs like JG and Paul Hackett don't believe in the shotgun :D .

Buccaneers | Gruden working on Simms' struggles with knocked down passes

Published Tue Aug 29 4:04:00 p.m. ET 2006

(KFFL) Buccaneers.com reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden is working on QB Chris Simms's problem of having passes batted down at the line of scrimmage. The Jacksonville Jaguars knocked down three of Simms's passes Saturday, Aug. 26. Gruden said, "Oh, we're going to be working on it every day, just as we always did. Chris can come out and say publicly that it's his fault, but it's not all his fault. We've got to be more aggressive in our quick pass protections, and we've got to get people's hands down. We've got to sense passing lanes, certainly, and we've got to be more aggressive in our pass protections trying to create passing lanes."

He had this problem early last year, but really progressed on making multiple looks as the season went on. Threw very few balls into traffic late in the year.
