2008 IDP Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The IDP Forum here has grown quickly over the past few years and is probably the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things related to IDPs. In what we hope to make an annual tradition, the IDP Spotlight series will be a key part of our preseason effort this year. As many of you know from what has been done with offensive players over the years, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. This year, we hope to publish IDP Spotlights for approximately 50-60 players, which should account for most of the key IDP starters for this year and possibly years to come.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week (or possibly longer) of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways.

1) At the end of the week (or longer when necessary), we will tally the projections into a consensus.

2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: D'Qwell Jackson, ILB, Cleveland Browns

Each published article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, we request that you provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For DLs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, PD
For LBs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, INT, PD
For DBs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, INT, PDNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

I think D'Qwell Jackson is a pretty under-the-radar topic of conversation. Had he not missed nearly three games last season, he'd have had 92 solos and finished in the top 25. The Browns attempted to upgrade the linemen in front of him, which could help him build on his improvement last year.

His consensus ranking among the FBG staffers right now is 37.

Is he underrated?

D'Qwell Jackson is pretty consistent LB2 for your fantasy squad. Last year he got you 75 tackles, 26 assists and a sack and an interception in just over 13 games. In a full season that projects out to 96 tackles and 35 assists over a full healthy season. He has missed 5 games over his first 2 years so there are some injury concerns. However, I wouldn't be too worried about that, he seems to be a gamer. The staff currently ranks him as the 35th overall LBer for 2008 which I won't argue with too much. I do believe he has Top 20 upside if he can up his big plays.

99 Tackles 40 Assists 3 Sacks 0 ints

I think D’Qwell is ready to emerge as solid LB2 with LB 1 potential. Entering his 3rd year, he now has experience to go with his speed, great instincts, football smarts and nose for the ball. Often times last year Jackson was forced to take on guards, the improvements the Browns have made up front with NT Shaun Rogers and DE Corey Williams, should free up Jackson to make plays.

NFL Draft Scout reported; “He was one of the most impressive players in OTA sessions. He has been flying to the ball. There has been no tackling, but Jackson looks sure of himself.”

He hasn’t done much in the big play department, but I expect that to change, he’s an explosive hitter. I suppose durability is a reasonable concern; he’s been dinged up his first 2 years; however I think he missed only 1 game in his 4 years at Maryland.

I haven’t seen/read who will wear the dot in Cleveland this year. Jeff Walcoff, Staff Writer for ClevelandBrowns.com reported on 6/16/08 that position coach Mike Haluchak said "Jackson is one of a several players under consideration".

PROJECTIONS 90 solos / 47 Asst / 2 sacks / 3 INT / 8 PD’s / 3 FF

D'Qwell Jackson is a little bit overrated in my estimation.

He hasnt played 15 games in either of his seasons.

He isnt the proto type middle man from a leadership/mental stance.

He doesnt make many big plays at all.

He has lots of linebacker talent around him to comnpete for stats.

Steady, not super in '08.

Tackles: 81

Assist: 22

Sacks: 1

Ints: 1

Pass D's: 2

A few things I had read over time-One, when the team stated they really needed the leadership that McGinest brought to them.

Two, Jackson stating he needed to take on more of a leadership role. (I read that to be he felt he was lacking and needed to challenge himself to be better at it. Not just that he was ready for it.0

Three, In college it was said he wasnt a vocal leader for Maryland, despite his prominent position. Which isnt good if you are the play calling and adjusting middle man of a defense. This isnt to be confused with him barking or trash talking, but more towards signal calling and order giving.

just my take

Fair enough ... we differ there. I really think he'd be better fit in a 4-3, D'Qwell owner here, so I'm probably bias.

Browns LB Davis Expected To Wear The Communicator Helmet

Tony Grossi, Cleveland Plain Dealer - [Full Article]

Browns LB Andra Davis is expected to wear the communicator helmet for the Browns this season. The rule, new for the 2008 season, allows one player from each team's defense to communicate with coaches on the sideline.

Just posted the full blurb in the every down backer thread. Leon Williams is expected to be the alternate player, which means nothing has changed since last season. Unless Beau Bell has a stellar camp, it's Davis on early downs and Williams in the nickel. Realistically, Jackson doesn't have any competition for the every down role.

I wasnt under the impression that anything had changed.Beyond Bell being added and Williams being a year more experienced.

Just seems to fit the/my perception of ... He isnt the proto type middle man from a leadership/mental stance.

Ah. Agree that this supports that argument. Carry on. :excited:

What would the reasoning be for D'Qwell to not be wearing the device?
He will be making all the tackles and the Browns, as we all know are cheap and don't want to have to replace it when DQ is jackin up people all year long and breaking the head piece. At least, that is what I read into that. :bowtie:
