What is the supplemental draft?

I don't understand its purpose?

I just don't get why the NFL has 2 drafts.

I have never thought to ask before and I was curious.

Most years, there are a few college players who either are not eligible in time for the NFL draft, or due to academic or disciplinary reasons are not able to return to their college team. Instead of sitting out a year, they make themselves available to the NFL. Sometime during the summer, the NFL holds the supplemental draft. The current draft order is used, and teams bid on players they want by round. So if someone wants to draft Paul Oliver, they would submit "Paul Oliver, 2nd round" if they were willing to spend a 2nd round pick on him. The team who bids the lowest round, and is in the lowest draft spot, gets the player, but has to forfeit the corresponding pick in the next year's draft.

Now it makes sense. I couldn't understand why players didn't make themselves available for the real draft. That could be a very expensive bid! A 1st or 2nd round bid could be a costly bid.Thank you

Excellent description. Here is more from Wikipedia:"In late summer, the NFL also holds a Supplemental Draft to accommodate players who did not enter the regular draft because they thought they still had academic eligibility to play college football. Draft order is determined by a weighted system that is divided into three groupings. First come the teams that had six or fewer wins last season, followed by non-playoff teams that had more than six wins, followed by the 12 playoff teams. In the supplemental draft, a team is not required to use any picks. Instead, if a team wants a player in the supplemental draft, they submit a "bid" to the Commissioner with the round they would pick that player. If no other team places a bid on that player at an earlier spot, the team is awarded the player and has to give up an equivalent pick in the following year's draft. (For example, RB Tony Hollings was taken by the Houston Texans in the second round of the Supplemental Draft in 2003; thus, in the 2004 NFL Draft, the Texans forfeited a second-round pick.)The 1985 Supplemental Draft was particularly controversial. Bernie Kosar of the University of Miami earned his academic degree a year early but did not enter the regular draft that year. Rather than finish his eligibility at Miami, he entered into talks with his favorite team, the Cleveland Browns. They advised Kosar to delay his professional eligibility until after the regular draft. They then traded for the right to choose first in the Supplemental Draft. This angered many clubs, notably the Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants, who had expressed interest in choosing him in that season's regular draft. Many of today's Supplemental Draft rules aim at preventing a recurrence of this incident. As of 2006, players who enter the Supplemental Draft usually are graded as players who should be drafted at a later round, or who have college eligibility problems (poor academic or discipline issues). Only 34 players have been taken since the NFL instituted the Supplemental Draft in 1977."

Both of you. Thanks for the info.

You know, wikipedia has it's critics, but I like using it. Thanks to both of you and the wikipedia info on the Bernie Kosar situation was very interesting.

I have always known about this supplemental draft. However I have never known of anyone that made it big from this draft. That made me question why is it even there? It seems like it is there if your too young to enter the draft in April, or you flunk out of school, or get arrested and can't show your face back on campus, then lets join the NFL.

Sounds like if the commish wants to get tough like he is...this supplemental draft is full of trouble and he should get rid of it.

I like Wikipedia as well. Here is a list of the noteworthy players taken during the supp draft:

1981 Dave Wilson Illinois QB New Orleans

1985 Bernie Kosar Miami QB Cleveland

1987 Brian Bosworth Oklahoma LB Seattle

1989 Steve Walsh Miami QB Dallas

1989 Timm Rosenbach Wash. State QB Phoenix

1989 Bobby Humphrey Alabama RB Denver

1990 Rob Moore Syracuse WR N.Y. Jets

1992 Dave Brown Duke QB N.Y. Giants

I remember the Texans spending a fairly high draft pick on Tony Hollings in the supplemental draft.

The Bengals gave up a 3rd round pick for Ahmad Brooks last year and he looks to be their starting MLB this year.

And if he had been in the draft this year would have probably been a 1st round pick(now that he has stayed clean...sofar anyway).
