Unethical to tank game? (1 Viewer)

Is it unethical to tank a game in this instance? I am the #1 playoff seed, nothing will change that, 3 game lead. If I tank this game then a team who has scored 1300 points this season will get in vs. a team that has 1950 points this season. I would be tanking to make my playoff games easier, the 1300 point team actually has no healthy QB and won't for the playoffs if they get in. Thoughts?

 
It's weak.

Plus, you have no idea which teams will suddenly get hot come fantasy playoff time. The minute you start trying to manipulate it by tanking it, the fantasy gods will smite you.

Play your best players every week, and let the chips fall where they may.

 
It is always unethical. Many here believe that the ends justify the means, that is a wonderful rationalization but doesn't alter the fact that tanking is always unethical.

 
We've never had the situation happen in my main league, but it's been discussed. We have rules in place that say you have to start active players at all positions, but there's nothing to stop you from playing Josh Johnson, Chris Ivory, and Eddie Royal over Aaron Rodgers, Arian Foster, and AJ Green. You're technically allowed to throw a game if you want, but I'm allowed to openly ridicule your bush league tactics and bring it up at the draft next year.

I wouldn't do it if you are in a long time league with friends. I would CONSIDER it if you are in a one time league with people you don't know. Just be careful what you ask for. It's not always easy to tell which team you want to play against in the playoffs.

 
I know the OP asked whether it's ethical, but I think the more important question is whether it's fun — and to me, it's not. I like winning games, as many as I can. Playoff seeding, shmayoff shmeeding. Losing always sucks.

:goodposting: In one league I am in, I am virtually guaranteed the number 2 seed for the playoffs that don't start till week 15. But I still want to win my games this week and next, because, like you said, losing sucks.

if you don't tank it, you aren't very smart. but when you lose in the playoffs you can tell yourself you played to win week 13.

Is sitting Spiller and Sproles for Crabtree at flex"tanking" in a dynasty league where I have a shot at a top 3 draft pick?

Frankly, I'd refuse to play in any league where someone tanks for whatever reason (next year draft picks, to get some other team into the playoffs, etc.). Just my feelings.

I don't know as to the ethical-ness of it, but it's a #### move, regardless....IMO.

Playoffs clinched....4 teams within 5 points of each in total points...I am starting my worst lineup this week in hopes of moving up 3-4 spots in the draft next season. However, the team I am playing is mathematically eliminated from playoff contention and no matter the result of my matchup, no playoff seedings will be affected.

To each their own, but I never tank.. part of the fun in FF is smashing your competition every chance you get... and then reveling the remainder of the year. If you are just thinking FF is gambling, then I don't really think you are enjoying FF for what it really is. :no: To me, FF is about seeing who's better at drafting, competing with your friends, and having a good time for 16 weeks straight. Prizes are second. And if you are going to spout why have money.. the reality is money keeps folks engaged and makes it competitive. If you want to gamble, go to a casino.
 
Ask the Philadelphia Phillies if they are glad they tanked the last game of the season against the Braves and let the St.Louis Cardinals in the playoffs ?

 
There was a situation that came up a couple years ago, if I'm not mistaken, where winning the final game of the year would bump that team out of the playoffs while losing the game would get them in. This was due to the final spot going to the most pts scored and it affected which team got in on record and which got in on points.

That would be the ONLY situation I'd advocate tanking for. In this situation, definitely not. You play it like you'd play week 1.

 
This sounds like a good reason to have incentives at this time of year. Weekly points winners could discourage this. I don't think I could do it if it kept someone out of the playoffs...that could also cause dissension in the league...and might not ultimately be worth it.
