That kid had all the potential in the world. Only a questionable work ethic & bad personal decisions stopped him from being a good NFL player. It's sad.

I hope he gets his act together & signs a contract. He still could be a decent player, IMO.

He can still be a good player. He performed well last season. One sip of alcohol won't change that. Sure if he keeps acting up, he'll disappear from the league, but I'm going under the unlikely assumption that he wise up.

The 2007 3rd round draft pick with 217 yards in his two year career Mike Walker? :towelwave:I drafted the guy and remember all of the hype about him in BOTH pre-seasons, but I'd really like to see SOME results on the field before I grant him WR1 status.

The 2007 3rd round draft pick with 217 yards in his two year career Mike Walker? :shrug:I drafted the guy and remember all of the hype about him in BOTH pre-seasons, but I'd really like to see SOME results on the field before I grant him WR1 status.

A WR breaking out in his 3rd year (esp. considering his 1st year was lost due to injury). Wouldn't that be sooooo rare. :towelwave:

You just might be right if he can stay healthy. The knee is a serious concern, tho. Not only if he can return to form, but if the knee will even allow him to thrive over time. Walker does have #1 potential & would make a great #2 for the Jags when healthy.FF-wise, not sure. He's certainly worth a wait-&-see approach, tho. No doubt.

You are right, my post should have been better.So lets try this, and Walker is my kind of pet peeve when it come to this( people hyping young WR's). What makes you think he is going to amount to anything? He certainly hasnt even been able to get on the field. I doubt he out performs Northcutt or whomever they take at #8 overall

I love Mike Walker's skills and agree with Couch Potato that he can be a #1 quality receiver, health permitting. He produced against Pittsburgh last year, and flashed the skills the Jags saw from him at UCF. He's a great combo of size, speed, route skills, and hands. I know its an easy comeback to say that Walker is the best receiver on the team because they haven't had a quality receiver.

Still, Matt Jones, Porter, and Williams all demonstrated the type of production at points in their career that have given hope to their team and fantasy owners and ultimately disappointed them because they lacked the professionalism to sustain it.

There's another thread in the Pool talking about Sanchez getting mocked as the Jags pick. I doubt this now if Jones is gone from the team. I think we'll be seeing a WR and QB in J-ville in rounds 1-4. Holt would be a nice addition to this team, if for nothing more than the fact he's a veteran, a professional, and a great route runner - which will help the QB here. I don't think he's necessarily had that in recent years.

I'll eat my dirty shorts if the Jags fail to take a WR on day-1 (the "new" day-1...rounds 1 & 2). The release of Jones, Walker's knee, plus the lack of any other quality WRs, means they HAVE to go WR early, IMO. Not sure what they think of Torry Holt, but I don't believe even signing Holt would keep them from taking a WR on day-1.

Holt is on vacation and talking to no one at this time.
It appears that Torry Holt won’t be visiting the Tennessee Titans or any other NFL team soon.

The reason — Holt is currently out of the country on vacation, according to a league source, so barring the unlikely decision by Holt and his agent to sign somewhere sight unseen, it appears that the wide receiver will wait at least a few days before making his decision on the next stop of his football career.

He needs to make better decisions right now. As if the crack smoking bust was not bad enough, he knew that having alcohol in his system was a no go and he got dinged. He'll most likely get a second chance with one of the usual WR needy teams, but at a discount, short years and on a shorter fuse.

but to most people's point, I think Jax certainly looks at WR with who is left via FA and a high pick could certainly be spent at WR as well.

i'm signed up for ESPN alerts...i went back & looked just to make sure i read it right...the text message was worded "Mortensen: Jaguars released Matt Jones, who recently violated plea agreement for a drug charge"
 
I drank the Jones kool aid for three years but gave up on him last year. He looks alot like Koren Robinson to me. Someone will probably give him another chance and sign him, but he will have to earn his place and stay clean. Guys who have an addiction have a hard time doing that. The drinking doesn't concern me too much, but the cocaine does.

Walker will get a chance but the Jags also will take a WR number one almost certainly.

 
Kirwan's latest mock has Crabtree & Maclin going to the Bengals & Raiders respectively, right before the Jags pick. Do you think the Jags try to trade with the Bengals to move up two spots? Or would they rather stay put with A.Smith, Oher and Raji still on the board? Would Al Davis be happy to move down a spot with those guys on the board (assuming this mock plays out)?

ETA - I really think all 3 of those team would be equally pleased with at least two of any of the players left on the board, and would not feel the need to make a move. Same as I thought last year, Northcutt will be the most consistent performer on the Jags. Not that Matt Jones didn't outshine him, but you know how that went.

It seems to be common opinion on fantasy boards that Maclin and Crabtree are a tier above other WRs, but I am not so sure that all NFL teams see it that way. They have access to alot more information than we do and there are some other WRs who may be worth of first round picks beside them.
 
Jones was a candidate for release last offseason, before getting it in gear and having a good season. I remember Del Rio was pretty sick of him for not working hard and sort of loafing in practices. The leash was a short one, and the fact that he couldn't keep from violating parole says a lot about commitment and focus on what is important vs. what is not. Even if the incident that violated parole seems minor, it isn't minor when Jones had to know the consequences. And today was the result. I think this is addition by subtraction for the Jags.

I do think they have to draft a WR high, but it's unlikely Crabtree will make it past the Raiders (one of their scouts is a friend and has told me they are all over Crabtree if he drops to them). If the Jags take Maclin that still doesn't change Walker's status in 2009 IMO. Even if Maclin were to start right away he'd have a lesser role at least in his first year.

If that happened they could just grab Harvin. They love to take Gators earlier than everyone else is mocking for some reason.
 
I'm really not too concerned with the Jags WRs for FFB anyways. We have one of the most dynamic young RBs coming into his prime and getting the spotlight. This is a team that prefers to run the ball well, and has an OLine that is getting a lot of bodies back from the trainer's room. Garrard's TD/INT ratio should get MUCH better, but I don't think they throw the ball as much as last year. I'm looking for a Brown/Jennings RB draft pick in the 3rd or so. G.Jones has been a very good runner when asked to do so. He's become a better FB than RB, but that doesn't mean that he can't run well anymore. Forget about last year. Remember what they brought to the table for the few years before, except that Drew should be better next year than Fred has been at any time in the last 3 years.

I wouldn't read EITHER of the two into the release. This to me, looks like Gene Smith washing his hands of yet another one of Shack Harris' guys. Jones could have been a distraction in camp, nobody knows how long he'll be suspended, and they just decided to cut their losses.Yeah, they'll probably sign a veteran nobody and take a WR high but they better also be looking for undrafted free agents at the end of the draft as well.

Few would agree he "sucks" as it were, but I bet if you expressed some thought as to why you think David Garrard isn't as skilled as some believe, it would not only give more credence to your standpoint but also elicit some intriguing debate in this thread.Thanks.

Indeed they are, and I think the longer I'm in this hobby the more I realize how dangerous it is to emphatically declare anything. We're paid to do that as staff but at the end of the day I've learned countless times that the situation you completely discount can, in fact, be the eventual outcome. While I admit that Mike Walker, to me, seems a long shot to emerge; I would never discount it out of hand. And I would like to think B.S.S. wouldn't either.

I'm not trying to single out T. Bell here, but this is a pitch perfect example of the kind of thing we need to see less of.FavreCo posts a negative, declarative absolute and adds no context or analysis. And then T. Bell comes in with a :hot: icon to further muddy up the thread.

Tatum, I know you're capable of much more. Rather than post an icon for something that, frankly, wasn't a :goodposting: as it was written and instead come in with your own analysis of why you TOO think David Garrard is the problem in Jacksonville?

we are all guilty of the quick and bad post.And I value people like potato's input. and like I said Mike Walkers perceived break out is a bit of a pet peeve of mine. The guy is injury riddled, the guy hasnt performed on the field when given the chance, his QB and Offensive scheme is less than attractive to putting up good WR numbers.They probably draft a Maclin or Crabtree in round1 They probably sign a FA WR as well.Northcutt will put up better numbers than him. So I really dont see how Walker is the guy to have. Seems alot of people like to just grab onto some deep dynasty sleeper, than whenever there is a slight change in that sleeper's team situation, it's time to hail it as players X's time to be WR1. I just dont see it happening here.
 
Maybe Walker can be the next Isaac Bruce. Bruce had those hamstring issues early in his career and looked like maybe he'd never do anything in the NFL. But he got healthy and turned in a huge career after a slow start.

To me, there's no doubt that Walker has some ability. He's shown that. And I do think he's in a good situation - at least good enough for him to become a fantasy starter if he can in fact stay healthy. I think he's still a fantasy "hold" for one more year.

The fact that it's Walker's knee make it even more prohibitive that he would break out.

And he couldn't get on the field because of his health in year 1. That's the only parallel I was drawing.

right but he earned the nick name Issac Goose in one of my leagues, cause you would start the guy and he'd rack up a big old Zero for you. He did have injury issues early in his career
