***OFFICIAL*** Steelers 2010 Thread (1 Viewer)

I hate to be so negative, but the Steelers D has now given up 3 TDs this year with lesss that 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter. I know the first two didn't really matter, but I hate that trend now that one cost them a game.
This is really the only 'real' one, as one of the others was against third teamers and the other the game had already been decided, pretty much. But this was a 'LeBeau Special' game.....his one true failing, IMO.....they went into that friggin' Prevent as if the Ravens needed 80 yards, not 35. No pressure, two easy catches....then they try blitzing. Coverage breaks down, TD, game over. The two missed kicks were big, obviously, and the playcalling after they stopped the Ravens at the GL was terrible(and totally predictable. Bar I was watching in had Steelers AND Ravens fans calling the plays before Bruce did), but that display on D after punting was just vintage 'give up' football. Put Flacco on his ###, or pressure him into a quicker throw. 3-1 with Ben idling in the garage isn't a terrible way to be, but I HATE losing to the Ravens, particularly when Batch had pulled off a comeback.

My thoughts exactly. I was screaming at the TV screen for that damn prevent D, and this was while I was working in the hospital

I blame Bruce Arians. The play calling was soooo predictable. But the truth is, as well as Batch played, we win this game with Ben out there. Oh well, I'll take 3-1.

the sentiment of "oh well, at least we're 3-1" just burns my britches. everyone on this team played poorly yesterday, except for timmons and mendenhal imo. Batch's sack from the 27 yard line that preceded the first missed field goal was the turning point. he did NOT play a good game and he can NOT take that sack in that situation. just killed our momentum. Ike slept walk, looked like he was running at half speed the whole game. Pouncey was owned by Ngata and the penalties were inexcusable. this team just threw away a golden opportunity to go up two full games on both the ravens and the bengals. we're going to look back at this game as a seriously bad loss when the really tough opponents come knocking in a month. ####!

The playcalling wasn't great, Batch was Batch, penalties hurt, Reed didn't help...but in the end I'd have taken the Steelers defense vs. Flacco and 50 yards with 1:20 and no timeouts every time. On this particular day Flacco came through, credit him for that. I think a game like this, early in the season, will help to keep the Steelers focused.

It will be great to have 7 back, the sky is the limit.

Agree with the last two posts. The play calling was awful. Apparently Bruce Arians thinks that having Batch drop back and throw deep passes to Wallace is a higher percentage play than a quick pass to Ward or Miller. And I have no idea why Arians doesn't call a few more screens to the backs, especially against a blitzing defense like Baltimore.

I am glad the Steelers are 3-1 at the bye but they let this one slip away and it may come back to haunt them.

Browns week and not a single post. Shows how dead this rivalry has become, it's a shame really.

Rookie Sanders to return kicks for Steelers

Thursday, October 14, 2010

By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

After intimating earlier in the week he was contemplating a change at kick returner, it appears Coach Mike Tomlin will do just that against the Cleveland Browns -- replacing rookie wide receiver Antonio Brown with another rookie, Emmanuel Sanders.

The move might seem surprising because Brown, a sixth-round pick from Central Michigan, had an 89-yard kick return for touchdown in the Week 2 victory in Tennessee. Also, Sanders, a third-round draft choice from Southern Methodist University, was primarily a punt returner in college and hadn't returned kickoffs since his freshman year.

But Sanders started the season as the No. 4 wide receiver and dressed for the opener against the Atlanta Falcons. However, he injured his quadriceps muscle in that game and was replaced by Brown against the Titans. Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said today that Sanders is ahead of Brown in the passing game.

"I'm really excited, man," said Sanders, who said he will return kickoffs against the Browns. "I've been out about three weeks and the Atlanta game I was playing 80 percent, so I really haven't had a chance to show what I can really do during the regular season yet. I'm back at 100 percent and feeling good."

Ziggy Hood better do something IMMEDIATELY or that 1st rounder has the potential to be the mother of all wasted draft picks. If he's healthy now, he needs to strangle the life out of this opportunity and show why they invested so much in him.3 years, 3 season-ending arm injuries for Smith? I think it's time he just gets on with his life's work while his arms are still actually attached.

i think ziggy comes in for aaron smith and plays at about 80% of smith's level. enough to play good defense but not great. however, i believe ziggy is a fine student of the game and a smart guy which i think is critical for that position. by next year (if there is a next year), we may not even notice smith's absence.

no chatter about the poor clock management at the end of the first half or or Ben's horrible ball security throughout the game and especially on the "TD" play? i continue to be disgusted by these boneheaded Steeler decisions that we don't seem to learn from.

Like why they didn't call a timeout and try a long FG ... unless it was a bit windy and they knew they had no shot

Even then take a shot at the end zone. Maybe you get a penalty or even a TD. Some coach on the team should have been on this.

with 1 minute left from the MIA 28 and a couple timeouts in their pocket, the steelers run a reverse that loses 8 yards, putting them at the 36 with a 3rd and 12 and a running clock. they let the clock run the whole time, use most of the play clock and then ben takes a sack with about 15 seconds still left. i think the ball was near the 45 yard line, 4th down and a mile. then they let the rest of the clock run out--end of half.

at the very least they should have thrown a hail mary. one could only hope that, prior to that, a wise coach would have called time out with about 50 seconds to go on 3rd and 12 from the 36. if they discuss the play and decide to run the ball to get into field goal range, that's a possible three points, still killing the clock for the rest of the half. there were at least two or three fundamental errors with the way that whole thing went down.

I HATED that call. The ONE thing you don't want in that situation is a big loss -- what a bonehead play.

Earlier in this thread I said that Ziggy was looking like a bust. I understand he is playing behind a 3-4 god like Aaron Smith but I thought that Ziggy should have been at least pressing at least little and certianly should be outperforming Nick Eason. So Keisel goes down and I am thinking that at last Ziggy would be starting. But no, there is Eason starting against Miami.Well now that Smith is down it appears Ziggy may get his first start. So we're about to find out what we have in Hood and I am hoping to hell that I was dead wrong about him.

By the way, anyone sick of seeing Randle El returning punts? Actually he seldom returns punts. 7 out of 9 attempts have been fair catches and his long has been 8 yards. He's also funbled twice.

Why is he back there????

As much as I hate losing Smith for the year again, I think its time we see what Hood can do. This could be his year. We all know it takes players a few years to adapt to the Steelers defensive system, so maybe he's finally there. I look forward to watching his progress. Smith will be missed, but we'll eventually have to move on without him anyways.

And yes, I am sick of ARE returning punts. I became sick of it during his first tenure with the Steelers.

Smith undergoes surgery to repair torn tricep tendon

It's possible he could return this season

Tuesday, October 26, 2010

By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Peter Diana/Post-GazetteSteelers Aaron Smith stands Titans quarterback Vince Young on his head in a game earlier this season.Defensive end Aaron Smith had surgery Monday for a torn tricep tendon in his left arm, but it is possible he will not miss the remainder of the season.

Coach Mike Tomlin said today the Steelers will wait and see how Smith recovers from the surgery and, for now, will keep a roster spot open for their veteran defensive end.

"At this point, we intend to wait this out," Tomlin said at his weekly news conference. "He's a quality player. If there's hope for his return, we will be hopeful."

Smith tore the tendon, which is attached to the tricep muscle, during the third quarter of the Steelers' 23-22 victory in Miami.

The Steelers will have a meeting tomorrow to further determine Smith's status. Tomlin said it is unlikely the team will go outside the organization to sign a backup defensive lineman

Tuesday with Tomlin, preparing for life without Aaron Smith

Aaron Smith had surgery Monday to repair a torn tendon in his biceps and will be out indefinitely. That's the bad news.

The good news is that the Steelers are holding out hope Smith will be able to return at some point this season - though Mike Tomlin wouldn't put a timetable on it – so the Steelers aren't putting him on IR.

That could change if they get a rash of other injuries. But for the time being, Smith could possibly return.

© Tomlin is optimistic about getting Brett Keisel, LaMarr Woodley and Flozell Adams back this week for Sunday night's game at New Orleans.

All will be limited in practice to start the week.

© It looks like Trai Essex will be back this week. Though Tomlin wouldn't commit to a starter at right guard, the bet here is that if Essex is healthy, he'll start.

© You can hear me on FOX 970-AM every Tuesday night from 7 to 9 p.m. - beginning tonight - for the remainder of this season.

We'll be discussing the previous week's game and upcoming game for the Steelers each week.

Emmanuel Sanders won AFC Special Teams Player of the Week.

Yes, the same Emmanuel Sanders that fumbled the opening kickoff.

<_<

Next three games will tell us a lot about the direction the Steelers are headed.
Did you pull that quote off of one of the Madden games?
Um. No. Don't play Madden.I just think that NO, Cincy & NE all in prime time are going to be quite a stretch and with the injuries we are facing, if we can manage 2-1 through that stretch and stay relatively healthy, we might be the team the media is making us out to be. If we falter and go 1-2 or 0-3...we might not make the playoffs.

i thought the same thing. what about Cleveland's punter? guy runs 68 yards up the middle--what else did he need to do to be player of the week? that's a once in a liftetime punter run.

Just what I was worried about. That was some terrible effin offensive play calling...damn.We need to bounce back strong against Cinci. And root hard for the Falcons.

·Agreed with the guys above, the offense was too predictable on first down especially. Ben and the WRs didn’t have the timing down on 3rd downs. How about some play action on first down?

·I hated it in Super Bowl XLIII and hated it again last night, 4th and goal from the 1 in the first half and Tomlin eagerly trots out the FG team. I don't have the stats to back it up but I believe even if they don't score a TD odds are great with their D that they would get excellent field position on their next offensive possession.

·A few weeks after Bruce Arians said he wouldn't be surprised if Doug Legursky was a starter for a long time Legursky was on the bench. He got blown up on a 3rd and goal play before the FG.

·Despite his ball security issues Emmanuel Sanders looks more confident each time he touches the ball. I wonder if he will replace Randle-El soon on all punts and even as their #3 WR.

·Quite a statement attributed to Keith Butler from Collinsworth, "Timmons is our best linebacker." He was everywhere again last night.

·Some interesting stats on Flozell Adams. The past three years in Dallas (at left tackle) he's averaged 13 penalties per season. This year at right tackle for the Steelers he's committed two in 7 games. The big concern was his pass blocking he'd given up 15.25 sacks the past two years at LT for the Cowboys. This year he's allowed only 1.5 at RT for the Steelers. For comparison's sake Willie Colon allowed 9 sacks at RT last year.

·Mendenhall has also done his best running to the right sideline behind Flozell. 38 carries for 248 yards (6.5 avg). He's 3.0 to the right side, 3.0 to the middle, 3.2 to the left side and 4.0 to the left sideline. Last year with Colon he was 5.2 YPC wide right, 5.3 right, 3.0 middle, 5.1 left and 4.1 wide left.

How do you not adjust to an all-out blitz on every third down?
Arians sucks, they won, luckily, the SB with him and that has kept his tenure alive longer.I've said it before, they won in spite of him.I will give him credit he does mange from time to time to make some good calls and plays but he out "cutes" himself way too often and doesn't adjust.

Apparently Essex admitted that he blew his assignment on first and goal after the Randle El challenge. Said if he would have made the correct block they could have walked it in for the TD. So while I'm not a fan of Arians at all, not much he can do about guys missing assignments.

Running back Isaac Redman went off left guard and lost a yard. "That was my fault," Steelers guard Trai Essex said. "I didn’t do my assignment. I thought we were running a different play."

Maybe but it was still a dumb playcall. You're 6 inches away and you have a 250 lb qb. Take the shortest distance to the goalline.

 Best off-season move by the Steelers by far. I don't think it is any coincidence that Dallas line has regressed and the Steelers line has improve even though I wouldn't call it drastic improvement.

How much is Harrison going to be fined for his hit on Brees?

Schefter just reported he expects to be on ESPN. What a joke. Pansy ### NFL.

Anyone know why we waived Thaddeus Gibson? I thought he had been performing well.
As I understand it, the Steelers needed to add a DL to the roster as a backup (Steve McClendon), and since they are, for now at least, trying to keep Aaron Smith available for later in the season instead of placing him on IR, someone else had to be cut, and it ended up being Gibson. He's now a 49er. Coach Tomlin described it as being the low man on the totem pole at a position of health and depth.

Ok I'm not trying to be a homer here but what is the fine for? He hit him in the back unless I saw it wrong.

This will piss me off. There were two 'blows' to the helmet by Saints players on Steelers. Wonder if they'll get fined.
