New O.C. is the biggest thing. Maybe they can sucker Josh McDaniels into signing on. Marvin gets another two years so let's see what him and Carson do with an NFL caliber playcaller. This move probably means Carson is staying. Jake Locker or A.J. Green? Green with Simpson and Shipley/Caldwell/Gresham is a nice core to build around. Maybe pick up a solid RB to team up with Scott and hope Carson raises his play to average instead of horrible.8-8, Here we come!Agreed.Let's just hope they cross the low bar that is "please fire Brat." -QGSo sick of this. Nothing has changed here. That might be the most painful press conference in the eight plus years Marvin has been in Cincinnati.
any read on bernard? was watching some of his runs on nfl rewind, it dawned on me he runs similar to jamaal charles. upright but shifty and agile, explosive and smooth. The tea-leaves I read: Palmer stays. Ocho and TO go.Really hope they don't trot out a "new Brat" like some sort of "new Nixon"-QG
Emails and tweets to Lance McAllister (via McAllister's blog):"Shut up!" explained the Captain and First Mate of the Titanic. "The deck chairs have all been rearranged, so you can go back to your cabins, order your tickets for next year's voyage, and stop bothering us with those annoying questions about iceburgs!"Only thing I got out o that press conference is that Marvin re-signed and I'm not even sure I got that out of it.Agreed.Let's just hope they cross the low bar that is "please fire Brat." -QGSo sick of this. No read except for the general enthusiasm for young players that they expressed in the news conference. I certainly don't see Locker at #4. I also don't see Green - I mean do you draft him as a #4 receiver? If not who does that role go to? They gave a big vote of confidence to the DEs. Brown LOVES drafting QB's early. He reached for Smith and Klingler. Side note, the Bengals were offered the same deal for Ricky Williams that year. All of the Saints picks that year AND a first and third the next. Brown turned it down for Akili Smith. NEVER underestimate his love of qb's.Locker, Luck, and Newton are the consensus top 3. Green comes in and starts right away alongside Simpson, with Shipley in slot. Caldwell is decent possession receiver but not a playmaker like Green.Fairley or Bowers would be the defensive picks i suppose.I certainly don't see Locker at #4. "We're in the top ten in games played by players we drafted." - Mike BrownThat's our leader.
I don't see them cutting Palmer. I really don't. And if they don't, there's no way that even Mikey would spend $18m a year or whatever at that position. I can see a scenario where a former #1 overall pick comes this way though possibly as a back-up. (See SF QB disaster for who I mean.)I just don't see them bumping Caldwell down to #4 again. He was solid these last 3 games. Demoting him after showing that much promise would be a cruel joke really. "Congrats for all of your hard work Andre - while you looked great out there, made a lot of catches in the last 3 games, look good as a run blocker and have done everything we've asked of you, you will still be #4." And while the cynic in me says anything's possible in Mikey-world, I don't think that's realistic. Our track record is good with middle round receivers - we find these guys we don't need to draft them at #4.-QGBrown LOVES drafting QB's early. He reached for Smith and Klingler. Cedric Benson-RB- Bengals Jan. 5 - 9:25 am et
According to the Cincinnati Enquirer's Joe Reedy, impending free agent Cedric Benson will not return to the Bengals if offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski keeps his job.
Interesting. Bengals fans have been clamoring for Brat's ouster for half a decade now. Benson complained multiple times about the direction of the offense in 2010, perhaps rubbing Bratkowski the wrong way. The Bengals have been hesitant to saddle up Bernard Scott as a feature back, but they could pair him with a power back in a committee attack if Benson walks.

Officially my favorite Bengal. That is awesome.Rushmore said:Tell em' Ced! I have been a fan of Benson's since he arrived, and think he's generally underrated these days. This quote makes me like him even more.

My personal favorite:End of season/changes: "We were doing some good things. It's overshadowed because of the record, but we see it and we know it. We know what it means for the future."Marvin's say in personnel: "As far as Marvin's role on personnel, I would venture to say he has as strong a voice in personnel as any coach in the National Football League."
Practice bubble: "Marvin has a desire to have a practice facility. I have a desire, but probably not as keen. That doesn't mean I don't have a desire to do it."
Power: It isn't as though I'm dictating and Marvin's a puppet.... that is not the way it works. He does have real control... not influence, control.... over his area, and that should be understood.
Length of contract: "You keep asking, and I don't think the answer's going to change. It's as long as any other coach, or longer. It's long enough to protect him in his position. I would say this: I think we're going to have a better year next year, and it might get longer than that real fast."
Scouting department: "We get criticized for that because we run a lighter crew than some teams do, but I don't know if we do badly there. We picked up Nelson this year--- that's a pretty good acquisition. The year before, we picked up Leonard and he helped us a lot. We have people up there who are attuned to this stuff. Duke Tobin is on top of it very, very thoroughly. Today, with the communications you have, you can talk to people anytime, anywhere in this country, and we do. You don't have to have a guy sitting in an office doing just that. You can carry this information with you as you travel and then communicate when it's necessary, and that's what we do. I don't think it works badly.... I think it works all right."
Changes to staff: "We're going to make some changes with what we do. Either the people will do things differently, or there will be other people doing them."
Chad's under contract for the 2011 season. There is no option. No anything like that people keep speaking about. He's just flat under contract. He's a member of this football team and at some point he's going to address his ankle this offseason and move forward.
Please be posturing for a trade...please be posturing for a trade...Marvin said this earlier today...

I think it's more a function of being stubborn actually. Strictly speaking they could take the $ they would save by cutting Carson and plow it all into scouting. I think Mikey Boy honestly believes that the guys who will be coaching the players get a larger say when they are deeply involved in the scouting. It's even possible that this is technically correct (I don't think so, but it is possible - to paraphrase Parcells it's basically letting the cook buy the groceries.) I think that what's under-appreciated is that things are hurt on the back-end - that the coaching suffers because these guys are busy scouting. -QGI don't get understaffing the scouting department... Are scouts that expensive? How much does a scout make?
not a good analogy considering time constraints and conflict of interest/bias. proly some other problems too.Parcells it's basically letting the cook buy the groceries
The conflicts of interest/bias are part of why it's bad to have the coaches be the lion's share of the scouting staff. Mikey doesn't see that, though.-QGnot a good analogy considering time constraints and conflict of interest/bias. proly some other problems too.Parcells it's basically letting the cook buy the groceries
Ugh, get ready for an 8-year Brat extension based on this...All the justification Mikey Boy needsIm starting to get nervous since there has been no mention of Brat's being fired yet.
Yep, I've seen thatLewis took Childress to Jeff Ruby's last night.![]()
Mort and Scheffter reported today that Palmer is going to request a trade to a west coast team with the threat of retirement if the Bengals do not meet his demand.
Does retirement threaten the cap going forward (assuming a new CBA with a cap commences?)Is there really a team out there that is willing to pay him THAT contract?!?Many things can be said about Mike Brown, but one thing that cannot be said is that he hasn't been anything but good to Carson Palmer. Guess we can change all our mock drafts to Cam Newton now...I actually hope they make him retire. I mean what kind of pick can we expect to get for him at this point? A 7th-rounder? Enjoy retirement I say.On a side note, guess this is all the confirmation we need that Brat is back, eh?On a 2nd side note, is it even possible to trade players right now given the situation with the CBA? Pretty sure teams can't sign anybody right now (excepting the 4 still playing).-QGMort and Scheffter reported today that Palmer is going to request a trade to a west coast team with the threat of retirement if the Bengals do not meet his demand.
4th rounder at worst. look at the going rate for qbs in the past few years. with a more favorable contract, ie if he was willing to renegotiate, a 3rd or even 2nd is achievable.. I mean what kind of pick can we expect to get for him at this point? A 7th-rounder? Enjoy retirement I say.
Comet, have pantherclub call your people and we'll file the paperwork.-QGI am the bengals. We accept.
jason campbell went for a 4th. as maligned as carson is, i gotta believe he is considered better by the vast majority of evaluators.
I'd say Campbell is probably a bad comparison since he didn't really do anything for the Skins. Carson has at least led the Bengals to the playoffs twice. Remember, Philly got a high 2nd for an aging McNabb, even though McNabb had one year left on his contract. If I am the Panthers I offer our 3rd.
