The WW Receivers: Grabbing them Before They Blow Up (1 Viewer)

Looking to start thread of guys who are on WWs in most redraft leagues but have the potential to blow up either this week or the next or 3-4 weeks from now. Not guys you would trot out this Sunday but good potential stashes nonetheless.

Guys on my list:

Greg Little (15% owned)

Too much talent to sit behind the suckfest that is Robiskie and Mass is already nursing a sore hammy after one game.

Steve Smith (19%)

This guy has gotten it done in the past and played last week. He is practicing in full now and I have to think he emerges as a potent slot weapon for Vick at some point this season. Lot of mouths to feed in that offense though.

Steve Breaston (23%)

1k season under his belt but will KC offense show signs of life this year?

Jacoby Jones (31%)

Better bet in return yardage leagues, but the offense is there for him to have decent production. Just hard to be a believer after hearing "this is the year" so many times.

Brandon Gibson (7%)

Wr1 on the Rams and won't face Awesome every week.

Who am I missing? Are these guys listed on your watch lists?

 
Interesting question, 3 to 4 weeks to blow up, you say?

How about a TE that's been on the shelf for awhile, and is coming back maybe as soon as this weekend.

How about Kevin Boss? Look how fantasy relevant Zach Miller was in Oakland, and where is he now? The situation for Boss is a good one, as Campbell makes TE's relevant.

Also, with the hammy injury to Ford, keep an eye on Derek Hagan. He may just emerge.

Not recommending anyone to pickup these guys now, just monitor the situation and see what happens.

 
I'd keep an eye on Doug Baldwin for Seattle. I don't have a lot of faith in the Seahawks WRs and if the ball bounces the right way I could see Baldwin moving up the ranks pretty quick, espeically in keeper or dynasty leagues.

*Edit* just to add that I reread and noticed you said "blow up". I don't think it's possible for any WR to blow up with Tavaris throwing the ball, so by that definition I'd stay away from Baldwin. If the QB changes, though, maybe...

Antonio Brown is my bet to take over that #2 WR spot in Pitt. He's got the playmaking ability, they showed a willingness to feed him the ball. He just didn't have the stats. He will.

Brown PIT

Both seem to be on radars but that's who I have targeted as guys who could be come starters for your team. Gibson is not owned in many leagues and Brown may have been drafted due to his pre season fire works but has since been dropped in my leagues after a meager stat line.

This is so wrong, it's not even funny. Cobb had a nice game...and is worth a look in dynasty and return yardage leagues...but in straight re-draft/regular scoring leagues, he's one to avoid. Why?-Jennings, Finley, Nelson, Driver and Jones are all ahead of him on the depth chart.-That's a lot of targets for Rodgers, not to mention Grant/Starks.-He's a rookie WR and a 2nd round pick, they rarely "blow up" in their first year.-He still doesn't know the playbook yet and hasn't developed the timing with Rodgers that is essential in this offense.-The offense is predicated on matchups, sometimes that means Jennings is the offense focal point, sometimes its Grant/Starks, sometimes J-Mike, sometimes a combination of all. Aside from Jennings and Finley, there's no true #3 WR.Look, I'm a huge fan of Cobb. I loved it when they picked him up and I think he's going to be a great WR for us. Just not this year. He'll get his shots, but the WRs to have in Green Bay are Jennings and Finley. And yes I know he's a TE, but J-Mike is more of a WR in this offense ala Keith Jackson.

I own Finley, and also understand Cobb is down in the pecking order.Sit tight. Injuries happen. And if/when thy do, Cobb will reap many rewards.
 
Benn and the Rams receivers are the obvious standouts.

Little and Evans would also qualify here.

Plus, Decker more so as a receiver if Brandon Lloyd can't go this week.

Sanders missed a lot of the preseason and is not yet at the top of his game. You don't think his targets improve as the season goes on?
 
I agree with some of the other posters who mentioned Eric Decker earlier. Especially with Brandon Lloyd dealing with a groin strain, I think he will really start to blossom this weekend.

I absolutely think his targets rise as the season moves forward. as his health improves so will his targets. Emmanuel Sanders is the future #2 WR along side Mike Wallace, imo. I also like Antonio Brown as the #3 WR, but after watching Sanders play at 100%, he is electric and should be the heir apparent.

I absolutely think his targets rise as the season moves forward. as his health improves so will his targets. Emmanuel Sanders is the future #2 WR along side Mike Wallace, imo. When has he show this electricity? He's never gone over 78 yards in a game. He's never had multiple touchdowns. He hasn't done anything. He's been hurt. Brown has stepped up. We'll see though. But people make it sound like this guy was excellent last season when in fact, he was pretty meh.

I wouldn't be so quick to assume that Ward isn't still the #2. Ward was on the field for 100% of Pittsburgh's offensive snaps at 64 vs. 60 for Wallace, 46 for Brown and 26 for Sanders. Ward & Brown did have the same number of targets but Ward also received more attention from the Ravens secondary. While Ward is on the decline in his career he did play with an injury last year that effected his overall production.

Not a sexy name or a sexy team BUT: 4 receptions on 6 targets for team high 66 yards.

Fitzpatrick seems to be throwing a lot. Playing Oakland this week. Stevie Johnson is going to draw a lot of attention atthis rythm, he might benefit.

could be a decent pick up.

I getthat Little has a lot of potential, but it could be awhile until he develops a rapport with McCoy

I agree. He started coming on late last season and these are the stats of his last 5 games vs Steve Johnson's stats in the same games:NelsonPIT 6 58 0MIN 4 34 1CLE 1 11 1MIA 3 61 1KC- 4 66 0Total: 18-230-3 41FPTSJohnson7 68 02 36 05 42 06 69 14 66 1Total: 24-281-2 44FPTSAs you can see over these 5 games the statistics are largely similar and with Nelson having similar speed, 3" in height and a 6" vertical jump advantage he has alot of potential!*There were two games that I didn't include above. The 12/26/10 game vs NE where Nelson didn't record a catch and was knocked out of the game by a Jarod Mayo hit (I'm not sure when in the game the hit happened) and Johnson went 5-58-0 in that game. In the 1/02/11 game against the Jets Nelson did not play and Johnson went 5-72-0.

I've been keeping an eye on Jacoby for 3 years, he's got to prove it to me.

Isn't Walters injury a bruise not a break? What's his prognosis?

It seems they plan on playing a lot of 3 wr sets. Even WR3 could be relevant. FWIW I think he could eventually supplant sanders this year as well. Sanders has always looked rather avg to me.
 
Greg Salas has been mentioned, and I am definitely intrigued by him. We all know how Bradford relied heavily on the slot position for safety valve passes, and *if* Salas can run precise routes he figures to get plenty of target love. Amendola made the most of his very limited skillset, but you have to figure they drafted Salas because they feel he can give them an upgrade. In other words, if Salas can grab this opportunity and run with it, Amendola may not be getting his job back so quickly. I think Amendola senses the writing on the wall, hence him practically begging the coaches to put him out there this weekend with one arm. Won't happen, but the tea leaves look good for Salas if he can perform at a high level on gamedays going forward.

Also mentioned by others is Emmanuel Sanders. I totally respect the debate between Brown vs. Sanders, but in my eyes, there is no debate here. Sanders is the genuine article with a polished game and a superior knowledge of reading coverage schemes. Barring injury, I see nothing that will stand in the way of Sanders eventually becoming the #2 next to Wallace.

 
I thin this therad covers a lot of good ones that would be on my list.

armstrong, benn, brown.

But don't sleep on harry douglas. Dude is a burner and as teams start to focus on julio jones/roddy he will reap the benefits. especially in a PPR. He is the slot guy and Matt Ryan isn't going to be that bad every week. Especially with the way Turner appears to be healthy again.

ETA

jerome simpson and Jason Avant too.... but they might be taken.

Mark Clayton STL. Not going to blow up short term, but St. Louis signed him back for a reason. Could be gold in the fantasy playoffs - especially if you are having trouble finding a player to fill a flex spot.

Was wondering if anyone would mention Young. I'm a Megatron owner, & I'll probably get laughed at for this, but I'm srsly thinking of picking up Young as a "injury handcuff" (dropping James Jones; Burleson already owned). I know....handcuffing a WR?!?!?! I think this kid could step in & do some things if 'tron were to miss any time (assuming Stafford is healthy). Yeah, I know, no one cares about my team....yada, yada, yada.
 
To add a bit of info to the Nelson vs. S Johnson stats, while Nelson was close in yds and scored more TDs then Steve over those 5 games Johnson did dominate the team's targets 42 to 21 during that time. Another interesting Nelson factoid based on those 5 game's stats:

% of targets caught:

PIT 6 58 0 85.7%

MIN 4 34 1 100%

CLE 1 11 1 100%

MIA 3 61 1 100%

KC- 4 66 0 66.7%

Being named the slot receiver is the first positive news I have heard about Salas since he was drafted. Reports out of camp were not good. Unless he freaking blows up while Amendola is out it's tough seeing him unseat DA.
 
A decent Flex play this week and I am sure he is available in every league out there is J. Avant. He is the most underrated Slot receiver in the league, and with Maclin still getting up to speed I think Avant can put up a 5-50-1 type of game. If you need some one for a one week start I would take a chance on Avant

I believe it is only a matter of time before Sanders passes them both. Ward is not the same player he once was. Had Sanders played the whole preseason, it may have already happened.

Not really true, depending on where you get your reports from. Jim Thomas from the St Louis Dispatch (or similar) really hated both Salas and Pettis in camp, for some reason. Nearly all of the bad blurbs about them came from him. Here's some quotes from the TurfShowTimes blog that covers the Rams:

Restricted free agents also get back in the swing of things today, including Danny Amendola. Mardy Gilyard replaced Danny in the slot for the first few days of practice. Greg Salas has made a pretty strong case for himself. - 8/4



Rookie Greg Salas has been reliable catching passes in the flat, per @lannyosu. -8/4

Now, the Rams have two rookies in Salas and Pettis, but its no guarantee that they will make a big impact this season. However, Pettis has looked good in red zone situations, and Salas is looking good in camp. -8/8

Steelers WR Antonio Brown is still making mistakes in his route running.According to beat writer Gerry Dulac, Brown is "often turning the wrong way or is out of position when the ball is thrown." Ben Roethlisberger conceded after the loss to the Ravens that his connection with Brown still needs work after the two connected on just 2-of-9 targets. Brown has a promising future as a playmaker, but he's going to start losing snaps to Emmanuel Sanders.

I've read that Steve Smith is practicing fully. Do you think Avant will retain his role once Smith is healthy?
 
I watched the game and I would say the problem was more with Rothlisberger and his lack of accuracy. He threw 3 or 4 passes to Brown that were about 5 yards out of bounds in the end zone.

Seems like there's a chance Jerricho Cotchery is healthy in 3-4 weeks and can contribute for the Steelers. Took a flier on him in a deeper league.

I wouldn't be so quick to assume that Ward isn't still the #2. Ward was on the field for 100% of Pittsburgh's offensive snaps at 64 vs. 60 for Wallace, 46 for Brown and 26 for Sanders. Ward & Brown did have the same number of targets but Ward also received more attention from the Ravens secondary. While Ward is on the decline in his career he did play with an injury last year that effected his overall production.

As a side note, where can one find these "on the field" statistics that I see people post from time to time?
