Rocksmith - like guitar hero, but learn real guitar (1 Viewer)

Rocksmith is a music video game produced by Ubisoft similar to Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Power Gig: Rise of the SixString and Offbeat Guitarist, and based on the technology in Guitar Rising.[2] The game's main focus is the unique feature that allows players to plug in virtually any guitar and play.[3] In North America, it is available on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms, with a Windows release scheduled for December 2011.[4]To be compatible with Rocksmith, a guitar must have a 6.35 mm (1⁄4 in) output jack, a standard feature on all electric guitars. Any acoustic guitar lacking a 6.35 mm jack to plug it into an amplifier must have a pickup installed.Rocksmith includes a unique 6.35 mm plug to USB cable and users plug in any real guitar with a 6.35 mm output jack directly into their PC, PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.[5]Anyone have it yet?

I got it yesterday and played it today for a couple of hours. I'm an off-and-on rhythm guitarist for the last 15 years or so and picked it up 1) to get my kids interested in guitar and 2) work on my lead a bit. I gotta say it's pretty entertaining. It very much has a Guitar Hero feel to it though the interface is a little different. The best feature of the game IMO is that it adjusts to your skill level even within the song that you're playing. It also has a technique area that will let you work on basic skills to build them up pretty quickly. Thus far the songs are fine but I don't think it is going to be like Guitar Hero where you can fly through a bunch of songs in a night, especially if you are a novice.

One drawback if you have an HDTV using HDMI (especially if you don't have a separate receiver) is that there is a slight lag with the audio. If you have a receiver, you can get around it by sending the audio through the cable that came with your console (for the PS3, I had to go into the settings and point the audio to it).

Initial verdict for me: if you want to play guitar and don't know how or are mediocre like me and have stuff you want to refine, it is well worth the money. But novices be warned - it isn't nearly as easy as Guitar Hero.

How easy is it getting used to the on-screen interface? Looking at the videos, I keep expecting tab but it looks much different.

Pretty easy. Basically it gives you the fret the note is on and differentiates the string by color. It takes a little getting used to but isn't anything that would keep you from buying the game.

I am a complete novice and I got this. I had never played guitar before and thought that if the "practice" was in the form of a game I would be more likely to stick with it. I got the package that came with a guitar. I am definately getting better, but I still cannot play any multiple note chords. For one of the chords I could not even play it in the technique practice setting where it was waiting for me to get it correct. I could see what needed to be done, I just could not get my fingers to do it. I don't remember the name of the chord, but I had to play the top string and 4th string with my index finger on fret 5, and the 2nd and 3rd string with my ring finger and pinky on fret 7 I think. After trying for 5 minutes or so, for the life of me I could not get my index finger to cover both the top string through the 4th string. It kept naturally arching at the 4th string if I was on the first string, and to make it hold down the 4th string I could not reach the first string. It was one of the most aggrevating things I have experienced, just staring at my useless finger not doing what I want it to do. My ring finger and middle finger could do it fine (but then I could not hit the other notes of course), just my index finger could not do it. Not sure if I am holding the guitar wrong or my finger is just dumb. My hands are pretty average sized

From reviews I've read, it sounds like the "game" is a good guitar teacher, but not something to pick up if you're looking for a Guitar Hero-like party game. That's ok by me. I have an old guitar I haven't played in a long time that I'd like to pick up again and this game would be great for that. But, I'll probably wait for it to eventually drop price real soon. Ubisoft missed the rhythm game craze by a couple of years and it's not expected to sell well.

We'll see. I know that this is what I always wished GH was.

I want it. But will probably wait until the price drops. If the song list was more appealing to me, I would have jumped in right away.

I'd love to hear more impressions though.

Probably need to work on your hand strength
:goodposting: If you are a complete novice, you should start off with easy chords (E, Em, D, C, Am, G), not the one described above. There are a ton of songs that are any combination of three of those chords. Learning to play a guitar takes a lot of practice, building strength and muscle memory. A good exercise that I use and have my kids use is The Finger Gym. It's worth practicing if you want to learn how to play.

Also, this game is just a jumping off point. It doesn't teach you theory nor will it necessarily keep you from developing bad habits.

Hello! First off I want you to know that I have been playing guitar and bass for nearly forty years and I am a pretty good guitar player. I have over twenty guitars and five basses, and all of these instruments are of high quality. The first and most important thing I want to inform the reader is that the guitar included in this package is very poor quality. A friend of mine bought this Rocksmith Guitar Bundle for their twelve year old son, and called me over to help them with the guitar because they could not keep it in tune. Well I worked on it and changed the strings and the guitar just would not stay in tune no matter what I did. I talked with a few other people who have bought the same item and they are having the same issues with the guitar. So the very first lesson any person needs to learn about playing the guitar is buying a good guitar, one that will stay in tune so you can start to learn to play. The guitar included in this bundle would not stay in tune for more then thirty seconds of playing before it went out of tune. Now I am not saying you need to go out and drop $3000 on a Gibson Les Paul, but plan on spending $500 to $600 on your first guitar. With that money you will be able to buy a good Epiphone or Fender guitar, that will stay in tune for you. Of course if you can afford to buy a really good guitar, please do, because you will find it easier to play and it will sound very nice.As for the my review of the Rocksmith guitar game, I would give this a million stars if I could. It is by far one of the finest teaching tools for the guitar that I have ever seen. Like I said before above, I have been playing for forty years, and I was able to learn and improve my playing from this wonderful game. The game adjusts to your skill level and allows you to work on your weak areas. The only thing that I did not personally like about the game was the selection of songs and this is probably because of my age, but there are a few classic gems included. So, I say do not buy the bundle with the guitar included because it will just frustrate you and hinder your learning. I do say buy buy buy this wonderful game and go buy a good guitar and enjoy!!!! Most important of all, learning to play the guitar or any instrument takes a lot of time and practice. Nothing good ever comes easy!

The sense I'm getting is that the game is better for people who already know how to play guitar than it is for those who are trying to learn.

I may be asking for this for my birthday/holiday season.

Anyone know of any good guitars that are on the cheaper side. Not sure the 5-600 bucks the amazon reviewer suggested is within my good to ask for zone from the wife

I have never played guitar before but would be interested in this if it's a good substitute for hiring a teacher so I can learn.

I may be in the market for this game.....now I've got to find a pick up for my Fender(about time I learned to play more than 4 chords)

I just bought my son a 2007 Mexican Strat for $275 on Craigslist. I think used is the way to go.

Are these all songs that Guitar Hero and/or Rock Band didn't license? Might be the reason the list is less than stellar.

I'm just a skeptical person by nature but this just screams to me that this was written by some local music store owner who is simply hoping that a post like this will encourage some extra sales.Almost every review I've read by actual beginner players is fantastic. In fact based on user scores alone (no critic reviews) it is one of the highest rated XBOX 360 games of all time. (ranked tied for 13th best out of almost 1100 games)

used on craigslist would be my advice. get something used that new would cost $300 or more, dont get the entry line guitars that are all over craigslist and being sold for up to $200. some are ok but most are just junk. dont buy the package deal that comes with a crappy practice amp either, this is a dead giveaway of an entry level pile of crap.bigbottoms purchase is exactly the kind of thing to look for.

I was going to PM you but figured others may be in the same boat so Ill ask hereHow do I know what I am looking for?

That's a shame. If someone could take this technology and throw in some lessons (i.e. teach you how to play one note, and during asong, you only have to hit that note when it comes up, then next time, 2 notes, etc.) I'd be all over it.

That's exactly what this game does do from what I understand from reading the reviews. I'm not sure where BigBottom is getting his take from.I'm pretty my wife is buying this for my Birthday tomorrow so I'll provide hands on experiences in the future. And I have never played a guitar in my life so if I end up learning then anyone will be able to do it.

The game does do that. The majority of the songs I play are single note only, and it adjusts the skill level on the fly. I will be playing single notes and doing well, so some of them will turn into chords, which I miss, and then they will drop back down to single notes. Also, I spoke with people about the guitar that comes with the game who are more knowledgeable about guitars, and they all said it was a good starter guitar that should last you a few years until you get good, that review is the first one I saw that said the guitar is horrible. Also, the game checks the tune between every song or practice session, and other than changing the tuning for specific songs that have different tuning, it has never said my tuning was messed up.

I got this yesterday and by this morning I was good enough to be cuttin' heads with Jack Butler and winning.

So based on some posts in here and quotes from reviews -- this is a game that could actually teach someone guitar? As in, if I've never picked up a guitar in my life, could this game teach me how to play? (I realize of course that the instruction and level of "expertise" gained would probably be limited.)

That is kind of the idea, though I am thinking about signing up for a few lessons with a person to supplement the game, since I cannot ask the game questions.

This game should be a monster. I thought this was what Guitar Hero was, till I saw that mini-guitar with the little clicky thing and the colored buttons. If people were having fun looking stupid playing that game, I imagine they would be jazzed about having an actual guitar in their hands, no?

Kind of a really cool idea, I wonder about applying this to other instruments. Not as a mass-marketed game with sales like Guitar Hero, but if I could play a video game that could teach me piano basics, and make it fun, I would have to look into it.

Just from the first couple of reviews in this thread. honkykong (15 year player) = entertaining. huthut (novice) = frustrating.

Yeah, please let us know your experience. I might get this for my kid to supplement the lessons he's taking.

Also interested in reviews from anyone using it with their kids. My son turns 8 today, and I bought him his first guitar. ( mini Squier Strat)

My son will be taking lessons, but I'm hoping to make practice a bit more fun for him. Btw, I don't play guitar, so I'm hoping this game can help supplement his lessons at home, since I'm clueless.
