The Johnny White thread. (1 Viewer)

Given many opportunities to carry take hold of the starting job, Spiller has failed to impress. His carries this year have yielded absolutely nothing. His receptions have been fair, but for someone with so much "game breaking talent" I'm starting to get the idea that this guy just can't play football. I've heard Johnny White mentioned more than once on the Audible.

Doing a little homework, this is what I'm finding:

He's 5'10 and 204. He's not quite FJax's size, but he's comparable. Slightly shorter and lighter.

Courtesy of CBS Sports:

Strengths: Runs low to the ground with a compact frame and shrinks himself as a target through the line. Shows solid lower-body strength when by churning his legs to pick up extra yards. Possesses some wiggle in tight spaces. Lowers his shoulder to run through contact despite a lack of elite size. Patient behind the line, waits for blocks to develop before hitting the hole. Has soft hands and good awareness to find space as a route-runner. Works hard and will play until the whistle.

Weaknesses: Undersized, will not consistently push the pile. Lacks elite athleticism and struggles to make defenders miss in space. Does not run away from defenders because of his below-average top gear. Fails to reach the edge consistently. Too often goes down after slight contact. Hesitant in the backfield, allowing defenders to get in position before he gets upfield. Not a consistent blocker, defenders beat him with quickness and strength in pass protection. Failed to break through as a runner until senior year and then missed the final four games due to a broken clavicle.

He is a tough, in between the tackles runner. Unlike his "talented" counterpart, Spiller. "A downhill runner"

McShay via Twitter: UNC's Johnny White is the most underrated RB in this class. Just watched 2 more games (mia/clem). Won't get out of Day 2.

McShay via Bleacherreport.com : Todd McShay gave big praise to the 5'10", 209-pound Johnny White when he called him "the most underrated running back in the entire class."

At UNC, White consistently provided the Tar Heels with a reliable second backfield weapon. His running style, although reckless at times, keeps defenses honest. The 720 yards on 130 carries he compiled during his senior season are pedestrian numbers that won't impress anybody, but his primary virtue appears to be his unique ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. He runs routes better than most running backs, and his 24 catches for 288 yards in 2010 attests to his aptitude in that facet of the game.

Although versatile, his athleticism is dubious at best, and he is definitely undersized. That being said, he was never overworked in college and has plenty of room to improve—a solid pick for a team willing to use up a selection on a bit of a project.

The most interesting fact I could find on White? He's a converted CB and WR. The guy can catch the ball.

All this being said, I think that he has an honest to goodness shot to take all the early down work. If he can catch the ball as well as advertised, if Spiller continues to be impotent with his touches, White may end up with ALL the touches here, and we've seen the running game here in Buffalo has value.

He's certainly worth an add in all formats. Don't expect a breakout game against the Jets- but past that the Bills get the Titans, Chargers, Dolphins, Broncos and Pats. None of these teams should scare anyone defensively. Some of them are downright terrible.

#1 Spiller hasn't been given any real opportunity to take over the starting RB job at this point, much less many. He's played mostly at WR.

#2 Johnny White looked like the worst player on the field last week.

They all stink. Problem is White could actually show up at some point, while the other two with the opportunities they have had are just horrendous.

That being said, with the Choice signing, its probably unlikely that White gets significant touches.

The one issue that may favor Johnny White is the injuries BUF has at WR (and Spiller showing so little at RB).

I think Donald Jones is out and now David Nelson is banged up too. Spiller will probably have to help out in the slot leaving RB duties mostly to White.

I'm debating dropping John Kuhn for Johnny White. For an emergency RB, Kuhn is probably safer (for at least a GL TD) but White might have more upside.

The entire preseason must have been a figment of my imagination. My bad, my bad.
preseason meant nothing. the offense was beyond awful in the preseason. everyone sucked then.regardless, Spiller has not seen any significant time at RB when the games mattered, even during the blowouts the past three weeks when they had plenty of opportunities to get him more involved there.

I think its worth taking a flier on. I am not expected anything huge, but its worth a shot in the dark at this point of the season.

Are we thinking long-term or short-term here? Any chance he could establish himself for a bigger role next year? I don't know much about him other than he took a huge shot to his melon in the preseason.

Lost in all of this is that the Buffalo Bills season just went down the toilet. These 3 scrubs are the equivalent of trying to find value in Cleveland RB's. There just is no silver lining.

They drafted Spiller to be the man so I suppose they will see what they've got in him before they offer Fred a big fat contract.

the loss of Eric Wood at Center was a huge blow for the offense. this team won't be the same without him.best hope for Spiller will probably be getting some catches and yards in garbage time.

Yah but you remember the big hubbub Fjax made during the preseason that the team was trying to make Spiller the lead back, and he felt "dissed" and all that jazz. That's really was what i was talking about. Spiller has sucked at every opportunity given to him. Sans punt returns.

there was nothing to that story.big deal that a #1 RB didn't start a preseason game. Fred was way too sensitive over that perceived snub.

Well, I'm aboard the Johnny White train. Hooray.

Dead broke with my FAAB & former FJAX owner and the wire was bare. I am so screwed. :yucky:

Starting two Saints RB's not named Sproles. :X

So when White looks terrible in a few touches he's a hopeless reach, but when Spiller looks terrible in about 400 touches he hasn't really been given a shot?

Makes sense

White will get at least half the carries this week, Spiller is not a feature back and never will be. He is supposed to be explosive, and his longest carry is 26 yards??? He can't run between the tackles either, so basically he is really, really bad.

Average fantasy guy picks up Spiller, the Shark move is to get White.

And please remember, even though Spiller is a former 1st round pick this is a team built on UFA's and low rounders. Gailey doesn't care about that, he cares about production.

Cecil's take on White per the Denver Post:

Cecil, there's not one person I would rather ask this question. What do you know about Bills' rookie running back Johnny White?---Dennis, BroomfieldLammey: I have a lot of love for White. While in college at North Carolina he reminded me of a faster BenJarvus Green-Ellis (Patriots). He has fantastic feet and runs hard on each and every carry. I like the patience he shows as a runner, as he'll wait for blocks to fully develop in front of him before he hits the hole. White has good hands and makes for a decent receiving option out of the backfield. With Fred Jackson out for the year the Bills will first turn to C.J. Spiller as the lead back. Spiller does not have the size to stand up as a feature back in the NFL. He also has done little to nothing during his pro career, even though he was a first-round pick in the 2010 NFL draft. I don't anticipate Spiller doing much with his opportunity and I think the Bills will then be forced to look to White. While Spiller will fail to live up to the potential, I feel White will outperform people's expectations.

Jackson was my most reliable player. With him on IR, and my season headed to :toilet: I'll take a flier on most anyone...especially a guy Cecil is high on.

I expect White will be used on 1st/2nd downs very shortly after they realize Spiller can't break a tackle or push the pile forward.

Nice end of roster late year stash.
