Hard Knocks 2012 - Miami Dolphins (1 Viewer)

To say he's probably going to fail as the head guy because of the way he interacted with Johnson and Bush on the sideline is a huge leap I say. He's just a cerebral guy to me.
Now I did not say he was going to fail but simply voicing reasons I'd have cause for concern. He is a cerebral guy. My thing is being a head coach is not about X's and O's, it's about managing people. The job of a coordinator is much more about X's and O's than that of a head coach which is why, based on what admittedly is very little I've seen of him, I think he's better suited as an OC than HC.

Another example - when the players met with him to ask if he would involve them, he kept saying things like, "would it help if we..." or, "what do you guys think if..." It had not voice of authority. I would have expected someone in that position (as a head coach & the given circumstance) to say, "OK guys, I hear you. This is what we're going to do..."
Thats nitpicky BS IMO. I thought he handled that situation well. I wish all of my managers throughout my career handled situations and valued the opinions of those in the trenches as much as Philbin did in this situation.

The guy is more obsessive about tying shoes than a first grade teacher
Well I see his point on the shoes. You have to be ready for action at the drop of a hat. He is simply trying to convey to the team a professional level of readiness. You think Aaron Rodgers or Greg Jennings walk around at a practice with their shoes untied?
What about when tells Tannehill to tie his shoes in his office?I thought it was funny how he kept telling players to come talk to him if they had a problem....then some guys come to talk to him and he acts llke he would gove anything in the world to get them to leave.

Is philbin morman or particularly devout? What's with his obsession with foul language and being clean etc. ?
I'd wager that coaches use worse language on a daily basis than folks with normal 9-5 jobs. It just comes with the territory. When guys you are teaching constantly make mistakes, it gets frustrating. That said, coaches are still human, and some of them have a strict moral code just like the rest of us.George Allen never swore, by all accounts. I don't believe **** Vermeil had a foul mouth either.

Same with Tony Dungy.

Three of his veteran leaders came to him to express their concerns. Leadership isn't always directive; sometimes it needs to be participative.

Bid farewell, ladies and gentlemen, to tight end Les Brown.

If you've been following HBO's "Hard Knocks," you're familiar with the patchwork group of tight ends struggling to make the final cut with the Miami Dolphins.

Brown was a long shot from the start, but a lovable one. He was released Saturday, along with eight other players, the team announced.

"I thought he made a lot of progress and came a long way in a relatively short period of time," Dolphins coach Joe Philbin told the South Florida Sun Sentinel. "I just didn't think it was going to work out for him."

If it weren't for the HBO documentary series, Brown would stand as an anonymous castoff, but the former college basketball player was heavily featured in the show's first three episodes. We'll remember his ugly blocking, his delightful lady friend and his affinity for the Florida swamplands.
More time to spend with the hottie.

From The Miami Hearald's Adam Beasley in the past hour...

Adam Beasley ‏@AdamHBeasley

One thing I can say with certainty: At least one receiver will be on the team's opening-day roster that is not with the team now. Maybe more

Adam Beasley ‏@AdamHBeasley

I'm hearing that the Ireland was not blowing smoke when he told me yesterday that the Dolphins are absolutely in the market to trade for WR.

Adam Beasley ‏@AdamHBeasley

And they might be swinging for the fences, and not settling for some of the lesser names you hear. More later...

Great year for HBO to have picked Miami. Lots of plot lines this offseason. This gets a lot more interesting if Wallace, Bowe, or maybe even a Green Bay WR ends up on HBO in Aqua and Orange next week.

I totally don't read Philbin the way many are in here. I see a guy that is meticulous with actually a dry sense of humor.

The show has done a good job of creating some dramatic story lines, with the WR situation and the QB situation. They always take some 2nd and 3rd string TEs that I couldn't really care less about and still make it entertaining. That's just how the show goes. And they got somewhat lucky with the Chad Johnson situation. But I haven't seen hardly ANYTHING about Bush vs. Thomas vs. Miller. That was the most interesting position to me going into the show.

And finally, I don't how if HBO "picked" Miami. You have to wonder how many teams they approached before hand, or how many they knew they couldn't approach but would have if they had any chance (Pats). You have to assume that Miami is one of the 10 last teams that they would actually want to follow.

So it's been an entertaining show as usual, but not because of it being in Miami. They just know how to dramatize training camp, any training camp, and can still make entertaining TV with one of the 5-10 least interesting teams in the NFL.

Really? The 3 way QB battle with the rookie winning it, Chad Johnson, brand new head coach instituting a new system, trading away a 2009 first round pick, and possibly trading for a marquee WR is HBO dramatizing training camp? They may not have been the first choice...or the 20th choice...but it certainly looks to have ended up being a great year to have Miami on HBO.

If by "great year" you mean well-dramatized and entertaining story lines on a completely irrelevant team, then yes.

My point was that I happily watch it each week, and they've done the best with what they had, and gotten lucky on a few things. But to say "Great year for HBO to have picked Miami" is wrong for two reasons, 1 because they weren't really 'picked', and two because it wasn't really 'great.'

HBO sure got lucky to have gotten stuck with Miami this year.

Is there any way to watch tonight's episode later without a DVR? I have HBO, HBOGo, HBO on Demand, all that crap.... but haven't seen it anywhere other than catching a re-run later in the week. Any other options besides a torrent?

I REALLY want to watch "Joined for Life" - http://gawker.com/5933247/two-heads-one-body-a-billion-questions-the-gawker-guide-to-tlcs-newest-stars-abby--brittany-hensel
I think there is an east coast and a west coast HBO. HBOW (west) I believe is 3 hours later than HBOE (east). Not positive.

Gonna get interesting...

I've been told that as many as 10 members of the Dolphins' Week 1 53-man roster are currently on another team or free agents.

Just filed my advance, but here's a sneak peek until it appears online: Get ready to see some "crazy things" this week, roster-wise.

Good call. My on demand is with Fios, and I haven't seen it, but in any case it' non-HD, which misses a big part of the show.

Apparently a lot of vets on the team are pissed about the Davis trade, which just compunded getting rid of Chad for "three strikes" and trading Marshall while starting a rookie at QB. I wonder how that "leadership council" was involved

you realize theres one episode left after tonight, right?

The vets on the team are acting childish in my opinion. The whole thing on the last show with wanting a sit-down with the coach and gm to discuss personnel decisions, give me a break. I think Philbin has bent over backwards to be a players coach but there's going to come a point where you just tell these guys in no uncertain terms to worry about their jobs and not worry about decisions made by the coaching staff and front office. I was embarrassed for Reggie Bush in that 4 man meeting last week.

Yep. The tweet says "Get ready to see some "crazy things" this week, roster-wise." If that holds true, its gonna get interesting, right? Where is the disconnect here?

maybe next week but you seem to be getting way too amped up about one episode and a bunch of unknown new players

The reality is this show could feature any NFL team and the show would be awesome. There's drama and interesting personalities on every team.

That kind of thing has worked on other teams. I know it's somewhat common in baseball, where the team captain will take upon himself to deal with some of the player issues, breaking of team rules, etc. But if they're asking to be consulted on personnel moves they're insane.

Wow. A lot of nitpicky posting going on in this thread. I will try to tone down my enthusiasm so as not to bother you any further.

ITS GONNA BE SO EPIC IM SHAKING!

And I'm starting to think I overrated Lauren Tannehill. There's something off about her. Droopy eyes maybe.

Don't get me wrong, I'd crawl through five miles of sewage and broken glass just to touch her hair, but she's not a "10".
XShe's a ten.

On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being an average NBA player...just how high was Vontae Davis during that trade scene?

Not this guy!
The former first-round pick didn’t need long to run afoul of new coach Joe Philbin in Miami, as it’s been clear from watching Hard Knocks Philbin didn’t care for his effort. But Davis had problems there before Philbin, including reports he was suspended for showing up to a walk-through with alcohol on his breath.

Biggest things I took from the episode this week.

1. Joe Philbin will do whatever ireland tells him to do. Big decision with Vontae Davis and as soon as Ireland said I'm thinking I am gonna pull the trigger, Philbin said OK-fine, the guy has no impact and I don't see this being a long term solution. Forget about T-Hill and all that, just can't see Philbin being a superb NFL coach but we'll see. Irealnd is such an idiot and he needs someone that won't talk back...none of these guys want anyone that can think for themselves. I can't wait to see Tannehill sometime down the road say something that is not Pro-Ireland regime and the fireworks will fly. It's apparent on the show what this team is trying to do.

The reality is some folks think the show is a set up and different things are happening behind the scenes...not sure about that. They shows Chad Johnson on the fritz, then he commits NFL-suicide, they war on to something. They showcased how Miami has no receivers and made Wallace a FF gem for about 24 hours. I think it's perfectly OK to start making some small assumptions and opinions based on this show.

2. Jeff Ireland is the biggest lying SOB on the planet. You can't believe a word he says and he is a terrible evaluator of talent. He tells Vontae Davis that he has been traded, tells him why and that Ireland wants total transparency and then Davis asks him "So what did you trade me for?" "A couple picks" is the response, Davis asked the question again and Ireland either repeated himself or didn't answer but just nodded. What a doosh.
