IT has its ridiculous moments but for the most part, what it is is the best show on tv right now.About 6 months ago I blew threw SOA.... not a bad little show "for what it is".Looking forward to season 5.Season 5 premiere Tues, Sept 11.
What deus ex machina? They threw a curve ball for sure but I didn't see anything like that in there.2 good seasons, 1 crummy season, and then another season that was rendered absurd by a ridiculous deus ex machina. Yet, I'm hopeful.
Basically the machine of the gods. In Greek plays there'd be all kinds of trouble, then out of the blue the gods would intervene and make everything ok. They literally used a lever system to drop the gods into the stage as if flown in. Hence the term means a quick and easy ending to a very tough situation. What deus ex machina? I think it applies here. With very little hints or implications whatsoever, the cartel all of the sudden are feds in disguise. Bada-boom, it's all over for Lincoln Potter and Ronnie Gardocki.I think he is disputing the application of the term, not asking for a definition.Basically the machine of the gods. Thats a twist not a mechanism that solves all of the problems. In fact it created a ton more.If you want to debate whether it was a good twist or not, that's one thing but the character (Treyo) was there the whole time. There were a few hints that he had an ulterior motive. Trying to kidnap Tara instead of just shooting her dead for one. Being very cryptic with other info. I didn't see it coming but it was merely a twist. If Treyo showed up in the season finale for the first time and did what he did, thats a deus Ex machina.I think it applies here. Umm no. If its not your thing, no big deal but this show might be the best on TV right now. And yes I include Breaking Bad and Mad Men in that category. Not as well written as those shows but it makes up for it in just pure entertainment value.this show kind of sucks now, right? it's good for a few lols but I started losing interest after Season 2 IIRC. It had potential
Semantics. If you want to call it a twist, it was a lousy twist.'Insein said:Thats a twist not a mechanism that solves all of the problems. Dude it's not even close to being in the same league as Breaking Bad or Mad Men. I enjoy watching SOA...but it's almost a guilty pleasure. It's one part soap opera, one part B-movie, one part video game, one part cartoon.Umm no. If its not your thing, no big deal but this show might be the best on TV right now. Good sir-I kindly disagree with your rather strict use of the term "deus ex machina." Over time, the definition of that phrase has expanded since the days of Greek theatre, to include any unlikely or artificial device which is introduced suddenly to resolve a plot.Verily, several professional television authors also referred to the events of the last episode of "Sons of Anarchy To Be, Part 2" as being a deus ex machina, included the esteemed Mr. Sepinwall.I have found our brief conversation to be enlightening and engaging, and I look forward to corresponding with you more in the future.Very truly yours,GPJ
