Great list.I have a giant "Alt Country" playlist I've built over the last couple months. I realize that some of these are traditional country, and some aren't really country at all, but they have tunes that fit with the general mood. I'm wondering if there's anyone obvious that I haven't included.

Thanks for the recommendations. Will add those. Since posting, I've also picked up:Adam CarrollGreat list.I have a giant "Alt Country" playlist I've built over the last couple months. What do you think?I got one of the first 1,000 autographed copies. I like it but it is different. I still think Mescalito has been his best.Bentley - That is a good list. I looked for my favorites and they are all there.Ryan Bingham's new album comes out next week. Looking forward to it.
I agree. I like Mescalito the best. There are just a ton of great songs on that CD.The new one is good, but it's a little too produced and it sounds like he tried too hard. I'm not sure if that's the right description or not, but I just picture the songs on Mescalito pouring out of him with no effort. It feels like he had to stretch things a bit on the newest one.But I still enjoyed it.What do you think?I got one of the first 1,000 autographed copies. I like it but it is different. Hey Hunter. Its been a while. Hope you enjoy the show. I have some Jason Boland but agree he's hit or miss. Also heard The Trishas for the first time today. The one song I heard was pretty good.Bentley -- It looks like you stole my ipod! Great list. I would add Jason Boland to it as well. Some songs are too commercial for me,. but some great ones in there as well. Going to see Reckless Kelly in a few weeks. Boy do I miss living in Austin where all of this music was on display all the time.

That was my guess but it hasn't been touched in two weeks. Thanks for the rec on Yarn. This one.
Thanks for the updates. Just clicked on a Shovels and Rope song and its pretty darn good. So you are 1 for 1 so far!Other new additions:Shovels and RopeThe Devil Makes ThreeKacey MusgravesThe TrishasI've also added The Black Crowes and The Black Keys to my big playlist, but I think most folks probably know who they are.Recently been on a Jimmy LaFave kick. He's got a great voice.
You mention Drive by Truckers, but I don't know to what extent. If you haven't, mine every Mike Cooley song starting with Gangstabilly. His three songs there are a language and genre being born. Uncle Frank might be the best song written since Blood on the Tracks.Other new additions:Shovels and RopeThe Devil Makes ThreeKacey MusgravesThe TrishasI've also added The Black Crowes and The Black Keys to my big playlist, but I think most folks probably know who they are.Recently been on a Jimmy LaFave kick. Very interesting. Cooley's vocal work was always my favorite on DBT stuff. If I were to pick my favorite subgenre of music, it would be whatever version of Americana/Alt Country/Modern Southern Rock that Drive By Truckers, The Hold Steady, Lucero, Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers, Old 97s and Reckless Kelly live in.You mention Drive by Truckers, but I don't know to what extent. Very cool. And the Farrar Unappreciation Society is always welcoming members.Just re-established contact with an old friend & client due to hearing how he, one of the first people to make Brooklyn cool 30 yrs ago, and his studio were harmed in Hurricane Sandy, and found out he (who was there at the beginning of Alt Country as an original member of Blood Oranges) is now in Son Volt. Here he is, absolutely shredding behind Jay Farrar's whining.
Won tickets from Kgsr to see them at liberty lunch on the trace your. Unbelievably good band.Very cool. Enough with the alt-country!!!

I heard a great joke once.
Q. What did the alt-country musician say when he sobered up?
A. “Man, this music sucks.”
And alt-country does suck. At least to me, it does. Maybe alt-country musicians think if they add enough quirky, ironic lyrics, mandolins, banjos, and two-note piano riffs, the music will suddenly become resonant and meaningful. But, sadly, alt-country sucks as much as regular country, and it’s even more laughable to me as a genre.
At least with country music, you get rednecks like Toby Keith and Kenny Chesney singing about their tractors being sexy and how much they love their honkytonk bars and how great America is and how everyone should be a patriot. That’s utterly devoid of intellectual merit, but at least it’s honest. It’s not inconceivable that Toby Keith would be sitting on his porch(or in the backyard of his mansion, probably) drinking Wild Turkey and cleaning his handgun and muttering about the damn liberals ruining Amurrica. I hate that right-wing hick idealism, but at least it’s honest hick idealism.
But when you have white middle-class college kids singing about putting their faith in Jesus and hitting the road with all their wordly possessions and a storm washing away the small town they came from–come on. Add a lot of beards, black-rimmed glasses, pearl-button Westen-style shirts, and a carefully contructed air of detached vulnerability and, there it is. A new genre of boring, boring music.
Two-note acoustic guitar riffs and soft, sensitive vocals. Blech. No cool drum effects, no cool synth or keyboard effects, not even a single guitar effect pedal! Lyrics that have been heard so many times they don’t even register on the quirky scale any more. And not only does alt-country sell, it’s gaining momentum. I swear. Every single Milwaukee band is starting to sound like the Avett Brothers. Why?! I’ll admit I like some hipster fashions, and I even drink a Pabst once in awhile. But hipsters are supposed to be “cultured” and “intelligent.” How can they believe the Mountain Goats are actually good?!
What’s even sadder is that bands that started out cool, like Iron and Wine and the Fleet Foxes, have now hopped on this ramshackle bandwagon. Check out Iron and Wine’s 2007 album The Shepherd’s Dog, than check out their later double album “Around the Well.” A sad change from a band that had potential….
Oh well. Even if it’s gained a Milwaukee and nationwide foothold, alt-country will never dominate. I have faith, and I’ll bask in the comforts of the Black Angels until this silly music phase passes.
"New" genre? Hasn't it been around since the mid-90s? Also, are any of those folk bands actually considered alt-country? I agree that most of those bands are derivative and uninteresting and about as original as ska-punk in the late 90s, but before he goes of on a rant about a genre, he should at least get the genre right.Iron and Wine and Fleet Foxes? It's Hipple. Usually best to ignore it. I doubt he'll ever come back or even remember that he posted that. You honestly thought that was worth pasting?
I'm a fan. I'm also digging on "Down the Hatch" by The Damn Quails. It's reminiscent of The Great Divide when Mike McClure was in the band and they made catchy stuff.I'm still on Turnpike Troubadours.![]()
Dammit. He did we spend a weekend together and not talk alt country?I think I had a negative comment about Jenny Lewis back in here somewhere. To clarify, I liked Rilo Kiley but the Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins album was a turd.
