Blueprint Juice Diet (1 Viewer)

So Otis, how long has it been since you had a nice juicy cheeseburger?
Hard to say. Been a while. That said, I'm good. Wife cracked some red wine tonight. Even had some baked whole wheat chips and salsa. Cruising through a delicious cut of salmon and some asparagus right now. May move onto wine glass #2. It's that good. And I was at about 400 calories on the day till I got home... SUCK IT CHUBBY NERDS
I'm glad that you've found a way to work alcohol into your routine. Gets it done for me too.I'm planning to finish the day at 1540 calories with three beers and a four mile run.1587 yesterday with 2 glasses of wine.1745 Sunday with 3 beers, 2 glasses of wine and a six mile run.
isn't that just the hobo diet?only with a 6 mile run substituted for a nap under an overpass.

Maybe. You don't see a lot of fat hobos, do you?

Some of them look kind of fat because they took in most of their calories from beer and stuff. But mostly, no. Which is more scientific proof that the DrJ plan leads to being thin. Millions of hobos who eat nothing but the cheapest thing they can get their hands pretty much ends the debate.

You guys sound like a blast. If you can't have alcohol without being fat, you're giving me the choice between hanging out with fat dudes or boring dudes and frankly either way is pretty lame. And we already know you like fat women.

You can get thin on anything. It's just funny that your diet somewhat resembles a street urchin because of the parameters that you've set. The bum needs to make sure that he doesn't blow all of his money on food, otherwise he won't be able to get his drink on. For you, you have to eat tree bark in order to make sure you have calories for that highly masculine wine.

You still running with this shtick? Kind of boring at this point dude

On the plus side, there's really no excitement to be drained at this point. The whole fat guy seeing how long he can deprive himself from the things that made him fat in the first place schtick has been done about a few million times already.

Otis, 3 things:a) I'm pulling for you. b) See the posts about the blenders. The blender has drastically increased my fruit/vegetable intake and its much easier to get that stuff in your diet. I would consider it. c) My wife and I have been considering getting the "up by Jawbone" bracelet and tracking what we eat, how much we sleep, and how much activity we are getting. It's $130 which is why we haven't bought them yet (I'm not rich like you), but maybe this would be a good way to keep you motivated? The sleep thing is also really neat and with the baby, I'm sure you could stand to get some better sleep like I could.
Funny, I was looking at the UP and seriously considering it. Maybe I will pull the trigger and let you know how it works out.I've been tempted to get a juicer thing, right up until the guy at work told me his cost 2 grand. Oh and when I tried drinking juice for a day and couldn't. :X
WARNING: Reading the Amazon reviews and UP troubleshooting message board has me re-considering. There seem to be some serious battery issues, or at least some very vocal customers that have had issues with the built in battery. The fitbit flex is maybe is looking more appealing at this point.

Esselstyn is a bit of a quack in his own right but I tend to agree with him on that one. Blended smoothies are almost certainly better than juicers that remove pulp but smoothies probably increase the rate of sugar absorption and lead to a greater insulin spike than if you had merely eaten the fruits and veggies in their natural state. Although I do not have any primary scientific research to back that one up.
Quack? He was President of the Staff and a member of the Board of Governors at Cleveland Clinic. He was President of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons. And he is currently a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Nutrition Action magazine. I am going to guess he is much less of a quack than all that. But hey I like a good smoothie. I just don't try to convince myself in the face of all evidence to the contrary that it is anything more than a good drink for a hot day.
I know he is highly regarded but his sweeping condemnations of all forms of animal protein are based on an extremely limited amount of research that focused on one small dairy protein type. I consider his statements in that regard, and his stance against all forms of oil, to not only be quackery and irresponsible but bordering on malfeasance.
And to think, people actually pay him for this information when there's a bunch of message board guys that know exactly what's up in terms of diet down to the exact particle of selenium.
At this point with a PhD in genetics and years of studying diet and nutrition on my own I could probably consider monetizing this, and I may at some point, but I honestly want people like Otis to succeed and if anything I write in these threads helps someone achieve their goals it makes me happy and who cares about money.Besides I am sure O will buy me a really nice glass of heart healthy red wine the next time I get to New York.

I'm sure it's easy to stay under 1000 calories when things you eat mostly suck. Who is going to want to have sex with women if they were all a bunch of offdee 3's? I'd be careful with the wine dude, a 2nd glass is going to be like 30% of your calories and it sticks to sodium like nothing else.
So long as his calories are reasonable for the day I think the health benefits of red wine outweigh any other concerns.

Yes, I am the 3 brazil nut guy. And yes, I have a PhD in human genetics that I have never once applied since my thesis defense several years ago. I'm kind of like the Dr. Venkman of human genetics.

we have the same blender.. I was $500 lighter the first day I got itin all seriousness it's a pretty good blender
How often are you using?
 I'm guessing somewhere near "never."
Use ours 3-4x/week. It's a breeze to use and clean. Spend a few minutes at night, throw the smoothie in the fridge, and you've got an immediate, healthy breakfast in the morning. Any time I don't use it I regret it. We also have a juicer, and it collects dust. A nice blender is a different deal.
Agreed. I was highly skeptical and definitely was concerned about the price tag, but it gets more use than our oven at this point.

It's really not difficult. People have this crazy notion that going a day without food is some kind of grand task, I get :loco: looks all the time when I tell people that I do 24 hour fasts almost every week. The typical response is something like "

Trying a fast today. Had an egg & cheese on half a bagel and a coffee for breakfast with my daily supplements. Don't plan on eating until the same time tomorrow. 45 minutes since I ate and I'm still not hungry :excited:

I'm guessing the studies probably didn't include many people taking in half of their calories from it, though.

I love how we rip on an overweight guy for eating not very much healthy food and a glass of red wine. What precisely would you guys have him do instead? He's no longer doing some sort of juice fast unsustainable thing, he's just eating real food and not very much of it. Mix in some red wine so it's sustainable.

It's not just any guy, it's Otis. His dieting track record matches Charlie Brown's kicking prowess. This time it's a juice diet which quickly gives way to a greatly reduced calorie diet which quickly turns into I'm allocating most of my calories to alcohol diet. He deserves every kick he gets until he can concoct and follow a reasonable eating plan.

Yet... nothing.

It's because he's the love child of the boy who cried wolf and the internet attention whore. Nobody's going to take it seriously.ETA: I'd love to see him succeed and see him make a big life adjustment. I've been where he's at. It just going to take the right kind of motivation to get the changes to stick.

Go on a sustainable diet instead of trying quick fixes. Personally I think the primal/paleo is a great way to eat without counting calories. Then again some people do well eating whatever as long as they hit a caloric goal. There are so many different ways to make long lasting changes to bring a person to where they belong that I can't believe Otis' insta-fat-loss threads are anything but schtick. That's why I don't feel bad hammering him.

Or you could try going without the shortcut and you know actually eat an apple. It just like those stupid supplement drinks for seniors. They are meant for people who can't chew or have other problems eating. They are not meant for people who are healthy and can get regular food in their diet. But you see them advertised as if they are for everyone. Smoothies are probably better than nothing if you can't eat normally but if you can they are a shortcut that robs you of most of what is actually good about what you put in the blender. Otherwise they are a nice cool drink on a hot day with little nutritional value.
Right, so all the kale, cabbage, spinach, chia seed, and fruit I ate this morning has very little nutritional value since I whizzed it up in a blender before I ate it instead of chewing it?Totally get that the sugar is going to hit my system a little faster since the blender already does some of the digestion work, but "little nutritional value" seems pretty ridiculous.
Well I know that when you talk to doctors about kale they love it. But do they recommend turning it into puree? Not so much. What they talk about is eating it. Like in salads. Smoothies don't satiate you as much as regular food, they cause the insulin spikes and they mess with blood sugar. They are not really a great weight loss tool or nutritional tool. Fine for on occasion but not as a regular meal replacement.

yeah, still not buying this. so blueberries are great for you when you chew them up into smaller pieces, but when you use a blender to chop them into smaller pieces and then swallow them without chewing, they lose their nutritional value? :loco:

Yeah it's called science. When you mess with the fibers of the plant you change how you digest it and when you change how you digest it you change it's value as a food. You can believe it or not.

i believe if you change these fibers enough (like with a super-powerful juicer) there might be a slight change, i dont believe that a blender changes them at all, and suggesting they're nothing more than a "nice cool drink on a hot day with little nutritional value" seems utterly ridiculous.

Here what Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn of the Cleveland Clinic says about smoothies:

"Avoid smoothies. The fiber is so finely pureed that its helpful properties are destroyed. The sugar is stripped from the fruit, bypasses salivary digestion and results in a surge of glucose and the accompanying fructose contributes to inflammation and hypertension."
Just eat the fruit the way nature and your digestive system meant for you to.
if smoothies are bad for you, i officially give up
Or you could try going without the shortcut and you know actually eat an apple.

Kale is rich in Vitamin K, Vitamin A and Vitamin C and contains a bunch of anti-oxidants. Can you provide a link to a scientific journal or a health-related source that states that, once blended, kale has "little nutritional value"? I've actually heard that eating raw kale in a salad, as you suggest, is hard on your digestive system. I get that blended kale may not have the same degree of beneficial effects as, say, steamed kale (particularly as a source of fiber), but your assertion is that kale and other beneficial fruits and vegetables "have little nutritional value" once blended. I'd be interested in reading some sources on this if you know where I can find them.

I don't think he means to say they lack nutrition after blended but that the nutrients are absorbed differently. Sure you get the vitamins and antioxidants but you also get a much bigger insulin spike than if you masticated them yourself. I am not sure there would be any significant change in the fiber and I doubt there would be.

Cuz you didnt blend them

And too many cruciferous veggies like kale, arugula, broccoli, cauliflower have been known to inhibit normal thyroid function leading to hypothyroidism. But it likely takes eating a whole #### ton of them to worry about it so I am sure Otis is fine...for now (#IBELIEVE!)

I'm guessing the studies probably didn't include many people taking in half of their calories from it, though.
Wait, I thought you were the eat whatever you like if the calories are low enough guy. Now he's consuming the wrong calories somehow?
If you want to lose weight. Being healthy is a separate discussion. It's pretty hilarious that most of you are pushing a diet that contains 50% of the calories from alcohol as a "healthy" diet. I'm sure primal guy was walking around with a box of wine strapped to his back. He probably ate nothing but tree bark so that he could drink it all and not have issues with his figure, while being sure to get his daily requirement of selenium.
