\\m// Official Dealer's Choice Music Mixtape Draft (1 Viewer)

well I hate to be the guy to take a SECOND Radiohead song in the first round but this has now been spotlit and I can't think of much else to do with this category. You'd think I'd know more of these. I guess I'm just too blah to research today. I had one other song by someone else in mind, very long but arguable whether it's 3 distinct parts.. for now it will be my plan B for best scream. Can anyone guess what it is?

Radiohead - Paranoid Android (rock song w/3+ movements)

Jizzlobber?

I'll open with a pick in my own category - songs with Babe or Baby in the title. There are many dozens to choose from but I have to go with what I consider the greatest of them all.

Round 1: Rock Your Baby by George McRae.

Probably the third or fourth time I've selected this song in a draft. Perfection cannot be ignored.
I think you have to leave your own category until last.
and I now have my round 21 pick

Write-up better late than never.

I don't seek out the blues much but they still manage to find me in jazz and rock n roll. My preconceived notion is that the blues is a backwards looking genre, more concerned with authenticity that perhaps it should. I think too many modern acts try to recreate Albert King or Etta James. At best, they come close but it's next to impossible to improve on the originals. I'm hoping the conventional wisdom is proven wrong in this draft.

Wilson is a jazz singer but she hails from Mississippi so the blues are her birthright. This song is a Willie Dixon composition. Wilson turns the gender roles around and gives it a sultry feminine slant. The number starts off with more of an R&B groove but the guitar solo brings it back to the blues, grounds it and opens the song up for the second verse.

She's got a phenomenal voice.

Scream

Could be chill bumps. It's blood-curdling. I had an ongoing argument about best screams with my nephew a few years ago. This one ended it.

Going with the cut on from Pompeii because it's a shorter version with more primal madness. This song needs to be shorter.

1.18 Pink Floyd - Careful with that Axe Eugene

If you're not in the mood for the... moodiness, just go to the 2:45 mark and listen for about 45 seconds.

Also, ambient may be a theme for my mix. It's going to be hard making it something I want to listen to all scattershot genre-mongous.

Any recommended Gay Folk artists I can study up on?

ETA: ...so I can mulligan Rush
wait... I thought this was a joke.

pardner?
If you want to change gay/queer folk to the broader bluegrass/country/folk I'm cool with that.

Nordic folk is out, though. And I don't mean that kind of out (NTTAWWT).
I'm fine with Bluish Grass.

I had thought about Long Songs as a category... 10 mins plus. not necessarily gay enough for my partner, but probably plenty of room for mandolins. But again, I'm fine with bluegrass/country/folk
Eephus - would you please change our category to Bluegrass/Folk (or country).

That should be directed at whoever runs the Google Docs but I have to admit I can't remember who that is.

I skim over quite a bit of these drafts so I don't blame any drafters who missed the 3-4 posts where I outlined what I had in mind, but I just realized the category got named my partners (one-time) flippant referral and not what we called it at least a good 10-15 times. I've gotten some pretty confusing PMs from folks who maybe looked at the category and saw Bluish. I wasn't think of the blues at anytime. It's Bluegrass, or Folk. (Country) if you really get stuck. Acoustic guitars, upright bass, long neck banjo, mandolin, washboard, etc. Harmonicas and bowstring instruments optional. Basically, bands/artists who have filled up the Newport Folk Festival the last 41 years.

Ultimately it's your mix and your call - no rankings, no judging, no competition. Just sharing stuff we like. But if you were interested in what is the spirit of the category, that's it.

Quality screaming there

Thanks - at least one of the bands i sent you played there. PM me. No big deal, but isn't the overall focus on rock?

Actually I think alt country is what the kids on my lawn call it. But it seems like you can take whatever you like, not a lot of rules to an Eephus draft (which is a good thing).

Oh, it's probably not any more incongruent than the Scandinavian or Wu Tang categories.

I find a lot of bands today incorporate elements from different genres and really don't want to be pigeon holed.

I don't think you're alone in that thinking. But I kind of like the couple oddball categories - it's good to get outside a worn groove and hear something new.

I changed the drop down on the Google Sheet.

Bluegrass isn't my music of choice unless I'm kidnapped on a canoeing trip, but I enjoyed the two songs posted earlier.

No problem here. I was trying to push the boundaries of the category toward something a bit more rockin.

Traditional bluegrass probably is a bit outside of most drafters comfort zones; 5-6 years ago I wouldn't given it a chance. Folk and alt country are fairly mainstream. In fact one artist that was among those that caused me to joke about queer folk sang on national t.v. at an NFL playoff game this year.

Really like the "Careful With That Axe, Eugene" and "All You Zombies" calls. Eugene was definitely under consideration for the scream category.

No but interesting, that might qualify for 3. I'd say you better spoiler tag it but they never get any love in these.

Usual21 - clarification on your category. Are these 80s songs for any movie or songs for movies from the 1980s?
Songs from 80's movies. You know...you're watching a movie, a good scene is made that much better (or cheesier) by a song whether good or bad. Could go for a great song used right, or a bad song that ramps up the unintentional comedy scale up a bit.

You're smaller than my wife imagined;

Surprised you were human

There shouldn't be this radio silence,

but what are the options...

when someone great is gone (x8)

1.20 - LCD Soundsystem - "Someone Great" (sad category)

If you've never heard the song or never paid attention to the lyrics, it's a song about James Murphy reminiscing about growing up and growing apart from a close friend. He receives a phone call in the middle of the night telling him that this friend has died suddenly and unexpectedly. Then he describes the days leading up to the funeral and laments at the funeral/wake that he'll never be able to talk to his friend again.

I'm shooting for a mix that people can dance to and I'm trying to represent more current music where possible...so this one fits the bill in both respects. I'm passing on my other favorite horribly sad song for this because this one should fit on my mix better. Interested to see if anyone takes the other one.

No time to prep for this draft (not that it would make a difference) so something vanilla...

1.21 -- 'Roseanna' by Toto, Title with only a person's name.

Topped the Swedish chart for 6 weeks in 2007

Titled with only a person's name

Could also be selected under Scandanavian, Screeeeeaaaam (maybe) or Awful Lyrics that you still love,

1.17 - Ola - Natalie - 3:08

Ola Svensson released a hugely successful cover version under the name Ola. The song served as the lead single off his second album Good Enough and became a big summer hit in 2007, topping the Swedish Singles Chart for 6 weeks, namely charts dated 28 June and 5 July 2007 (first run), 26 July and 5 August 2007 (second run) and 16 and 23 August 2007 (third run). The single was certified Platinum in Sweden, in recognition of 20,000 copies sold.
If I wasn't bald I'd want a perm just like that guy had for a while.

Great tune. Even the incongruous Carnival Fun Cruise bumper couldn't lessen the impact.

Wasn't there last night either FWIW.

1 hour clock. Usual timed out.

Tasker up.

Dayum. Got all the De La Soul except "Remixes, Instrumentals, & Rarities" - must have forgot to check a box. Now the server is overloaded and unavailable.

Drop box, anyone?

Given that we have an entire category devoted to Scandinavians, and JML appears to be trying to pick Scandinavians at every turn, and I have no idea if we have any other Bjork lovers here, I'm reaching on this one early.

I've interpreted "best scream" to mean most adorable scream.

2.03 - Bjork - "It's Oh So Quiet" (best scream category)

A few questions about the religious category.

What do we mean by a "non-religious" band? I mean, I get that Stryper is a religious band. But what about U2 or Van Morrison or even Prince? Lots of pop artists use lots of religious imagery fairly commonly.

I think "religious artists" are overt about their religion as a part of their identity as artists. If they're not overt about religion and it's not a front-&-center part of their artistic identity, I'm considering them "non-religious artists".
