I think we need some more test subjects to do sorta what Otis did. Anybody here that's approximately 40, never exercises, and is at least somewhat overweight want to try this on a track to see how you do? We had like 40 dudes try to throw Ritz crackers, surely we can get a few to do this. It's for science.

Still curious how OTIS managed to walk a mile of 2 major avenues of NYC in just over 10 minutes while apparently hitting every green light? I understand he's a super human walker but still..........

So I decided to try this tonight. Fortunately I live right by a high school and the track was open tonight. Jogged 1/3 of a mile to the track and did a 1/2 mile warm up. Then I was off.

Exhausting! That last lap was a killer! Finished in 5:27.9. Very happy with that. Time for a shower!

Edit: Oh, BTW, 43 years old.

In fairness, when I hit a light I paused the timer on my iPhone.

Happy to do this in a jog and time it. Way way too easy that way.

Ok that makes sense. I was just curious because I was walking in NYC this past weekend and I hit every single light

At Otis walking speed you can time it such that you miss most of the lights.

30 years old. Not in great or awful shape (6', 210lbs). My wife is training for a half marathon, so I went out with her the other day. Had an app tracking my time, first mile was 9:27, 2 miles took 21:42, my 5K time was 33:43. This was on sidewalks and a paved path. From running on treadmills on the past, I would say it's a lot easier to do it on them.

This is a pretty good data point. You are ten years younger than our target age, but according to http://www.halls.md/body-mass-index/av.htm, your weight puts you in the 73rd percentile compared to others of your age and height. That doesn't tell us everything -- some heavier folks are going to be able to run faster than some skinnier folks -- but it's at least a clue that the people guessing really low numbers are probably underestimating.

I have a friend who uses the same app as me (Strava). He's the same age, but considerably smaller, I'd put him at around 5'6" and maybe 160lbs or so. He doesn't run much but does long bike rides regularly.

He went for a run yesterday according to the app - 1 mile = 10:13, 2 miles = 21:22. He stopped at 3.9KM. So over two miles he was quicker than my pace but on the first mile I was - maybe because I have longer legs/better speed, while he is in better shape so can sustain it more? I know nothing about where he ran, other than he's working in an area where he's likely running on hills/grass, rather than paved paths.

Hmmm. I might have to do a 5k tomorrow without the incline maxed as I have been. I wonder if that would get my time closer to 30 minutes ......

a friend wants to bet me so i'm gonna try it this coming week. i'll report back.

stats: 6'1" 185, 39 years old

over the past 15 years haven't moved at more than a walking pace outside of occasionally playing some sport casually. i have my doubts about being able to do it.

I would bet against you. You could easily do it with some training, but not on your first attempt.

Just one mile? I think he should be able to do it - he's pretty trim. And a 10-minute mile is a pretty leisurely jogging pace.

Being trim and fit are too different things, He will be winded very early and have to go at a very slow pace.

Ran two ten minute miles today at 44 :bowtie:

Never been a distance runner so this is something of an accomplishment for me. Plan to keep building on that

What would the # be for 35 yos?

This thread makes me feel much better about myself than the 10k thread.
Understood, but the true enjoyment in that thread is watching guys start from near scratch or from distance memories and achieve some level of fitness and success.

40 legit pushups in a row? Maybe 5%.
That sounds about right. It's not comparable to a 10-minute mile. It would require a much higher level of physical fitness.
Agreed. My guess is that around half of 40 year old men could do one 10 minute mile. Only a tiny number could do 40 pushups. (I certainly can't).
Too high? How about 19? That's the minimum for a female in army basic training.

No way it's above 10-20%. I walk a lot, usually about an hour a day 5 times a week and I cover about 3-3.5 miles. I know a lot of folks who can't walk for an hour, period.

To run a 10 minute mile which I can but don't usually run a lot, there just are not a lot of healthy people or folks who actively run, especially middle age guys.

Walking/Running is the most under hyped way to stay fit in this country, it's shocking. Forget gyms and the entire health industry, just get outside and move. People make such a big deal out of the whole thing, as if they have no clue where to start.

Half? Not a chance.
The major restriction for not being able to do a ten minute mile for most adults would be mental, not physical. Most 40yo men are physically capable of it, just depends on whether or not they can or want to push that hard.

Pushups are a different beast. Most men cannot even come close to 40 pushups. The mental part of it is really irrelevant. You could be the most stubborn determined ******* on the planet, but physical lifting limits can't just be overcome by that.

I can do 25 and I just turned 50. Not really that great. I would probably do a 11 to 12 minute mile without training. I would guess it would take several tries before I could work up to a 10 minute mile. I was never a good runner.

If you had only ten minutes to be able to push a button that was a mile away and it would take obama out of office immediately, I am guessing you would have zero issue getting there.

That's a lot if fairway to cover. Does he at least get some form of cleat?

Is Gia di Laurentis waiting at the far side with a freshly cooked three course meal and nothing on except heels and an apron. Oh, hell, who am I kidding, I'd stop half way through at the A&W for a Papa Burger, fries, and a Root beer.
