How much do kids cost, in general? (1 Viewer)

Here is the calculator: http://www.cnpp.usda.gov/tools/CRC_Calculator/default.aspx

And here is my breakdown:

Housing: $6050

Food: $3250

Transportation: $2338

Clothing: $1,025

Health Care: $1,200

ChildCare/Education: $4113

Other: $1438

Certainly housing and transportation will be easily scaled down for additional children.
Housing and transportation are kind of ridiculous. My mortgage did change a dime once I had a kid. Just dividing those costs because you have a kid and attributing that to them is preposterous.

if you were kidless, would you need/have as big of a house?

But it would be pretty creepy you driving around to kids' soccer practices, gymnastics and whatnot.

hmm. I'm looking forward to the day the kids are out of the house and I can buy something much smaller, but in a more fun area. Maybe a condo uptown or a small cabin in the mountains. Gotta think that if I didn't have kids that's what I would be doing.

Of course, I wouldn't be spending any less mortgage wise.

Yeah, people are different this way. My parents still own the house I grew up in, even though my brother and I haven't lived there for over 20 years. So I guess for them, the housing costs of having kids were negligible.Personally, I have no interest in living in a single-family home after my kids move out. So some of my current housing costs are fairly attributable to my kids, but I guess only the amount over what I would be paying without them, which I guess is hard to figure out. My housing would be different without them, but maybe not any cheaper, hard to say.

That's just a different lifestyle choice. I could never go back to apartment/condo life and I have no interest in living in 'cool' area. Personally, I love having a big yard, garden, pool, hot tub, dogs, etc. That choice determined my mortgage price, not having kids.

My daughters both received full ride scholarships to college so I thought I was on easy street. Now they are first and second year med students and we are burring through cash at an alarming rate.

The scholarships were not exactly free as I spent over10K a year for club volleyball during their HS years.

We live in a house 2X the size because we have kids. If it were just 2 people you don't even need 2,000 sqft.

I disagree. You need all the storage space for the cool stuff you can buy with the all money you are saving from not having kids.

In the extra bedrooms? Would look like hoarders

Or you could live in a little two bedroom apartment with two kids

I was recently told that having kids is overrated and that a great many people regret having them, but for obvious reasons, very, very few parents would ever admit that. Any parents want to chime in on this?
My son is the best thing in my life, and it's not even close. And I wasn't someone who was sure they wanted kids.

Nah. Who said they had to stay bedrooms? You could turn one into an office, one into an entertainment room/theater, one into a gym/workout room, one into a love/boom boom room, etc. The possibilities are endless.

This says my two kids cost about $25K per year. Sounds reasonable.

I know we would probably live in less sq ft house, but likely in a nicer house in a more expensive location, so probably wouldn't drop much in house payment.

But if we were to downsize the house and stay in the same area with the same quality, we could definitely save a ton.
