Ran a 10k in June (1 Viewer)

Nice morning in North Carolina. 70s with moderate humidity. Good enough for a 20 miler in zone 3, 2:54.

Looking at the training schedule again, i think i can squeeze in a few good days over labor day, then have just under 3 weeks for taper including the Olympic tri on the 6th.

18 for me this morning. 7:37 average pace. I thought about doing 20 but I wasn't careful enough with fluids and the suck index breaking 150 allowed dehydration to do me in. About 53 for the week.

Took the weekend off.

Friday was a the pre-golf tournament day of Ocha (awesome little place we always ate at in college) and "practice round" of golf.

Then out to do stupid things like we were still young that night. All lwith people from college.

Yesterday I managed to drive back home in time to hang out with the fam a bit and then head out for my 15th anniversary dinner. Nice big fat bone-in ribeye from Flemmings.

Today is an FF draft and 2 soccer games for my son.

Tomorrow will hurt getting back into everything.

4.2 trail miles today. 94F, 165SI. Ran very slow, but the weather was the workout and it was more than enough. Last 5-6 lbs on the run, but if felt good to get back out there. I haven't done a trail run in a while.

How do you lose 5 lbs. In less than an hour? I barely lost that on my 20.

At these upper end suck indexes I have recorded up to 1.2lbs./mile of weight loss. I didn't weight exactly, but know I started the day at 182.5, drank 20oz during the run, and weighed 178.5 when I got home.

SUUUUCK INDEEEEXXX
Yeah, that pretty much sums up the half marathon I did yesterday. The air was so heavy that I could hardly breathe. In hindsight, probably should've just DNS'd. Instead I did 5 miles beforehand and the first few miles of the "race" itself, and then I basically walked/jogged the rest of the way. Eff that. Miserable.

I could do it. Ask tri-man. He's seen me sweat on a run. It's ridiculous.

7:37 holy crap
Says the guy who is "grinding out" 14 milers at 8:15/mi when it's not really clicking for him , . .
I think it might have been a criticism. As in, "Holy crap! Your heart rate probably surpassed 75% of max!". : ;) :

It's all relative, FUBAR.

I didn't even try to run today. Did leg work in the basement for an hour, and despite the A/C, I was still a sweatball at the end. The week ahead isn't supposed to be much better.

I typically lose 7 lbs or so on a 2 hour run. It's why I get leg cramps, I sweat like crazy.

Did 14 today. Finished before it started getting hot.

It was a compliment. That's flat out flying.

Went camping with the family all weekend. Friday was a rest day, so got up early Saturday morning for a smooth 7 miler around a part of the lake. Running across the dam was a dream - lots of cloud cover and a nice breeze coming off the water. Temp was warm - about 85 when I started, but bearable. That breeze felt like air conditioning.

Still insufferable out there, but got in 6 miles. A beneficial recovery drink that I brought to the office - a chocolate Muscle Milk added to some almond milk and a few ice cubes (~ 24 oz.).

Starting to think I've underestimated the swim.

Did 3500 meters this morning, a few sets of 5 minutes each, then 10x100s, 10x50s, 3 sets of 10 minutes each, finished off with 4x50s quick. Felt really smooth through the end but when I got out, was really hungry and tired.

ETA: was actually quite cold this morning which works well as it limits the number of casual swimmers in the outdoor pool.

26 days!

Thanks. The upper 7:30s to about 7:45 is becoming that sweet spot between "starting to get a bit uncomfortable" and "this is annoyingly slow".

Wetsuit?

IMO, you'll be fine. That workout is a lot harder than a straight swim.

That sooooo deserves a :finger:...
:lmao: As soon as I read that, I could foresee the responses.
:D

But seriously, Juxt, I wonder how much your speed work and short distance racing of the last couple years is benefiting you in this marathon training cycle.

Yeah, I deserve it! :lmao:

Hopefully it has, Tri. That treadmill tempo last week was my most encouraging training run in at least a year.

On the topic of speedwork, I have done a grand total of one fartlek session this training cycle and I don't think I'll do another fartlek or an interval session. I always need a long time to recover from such runs and my gut tells me I'm better off focusing on long runs and long tempos. I'm really excited for our half in September, I should have a good idea where my training is at after that.

Should be wetsuit. I should bring it in for a workout before doing the IM. Looks like the Oly on the 6th might not be wetsuit legal.

I had family in town for a memorial service, so no long run this weekend. I got in 7 on Saturday morning with a few miles of tempo thrown in (2nd best personal efforts for 10k, 5k, 2m, 1m on Strava), nothing on Sunday, then got out for 10 this morning with 1,837' of elevation and some pushing the pace on the downhills a bit for some quad conditioning.

I think I mentioned here that I'm a little worried about the altitude of my 100M so I actually looked into a Hypoxico altitude tent last week. But at about $1,000 all in for a month rental, combined with trying to convince my girlfriend to sleep in the thing, I ended up not doing it. So I'm taking a couple of supplements, and today I hit up my first sauna session. Several things I've read indicate that heat acclimation and altitude acclimation include some similar physiological adaptations (increased blood plasma volume leading to greater cardiac output being the primary one), so I'm going to be spending some quality time in that hot box for the next couple of weeks - I don't live in the Suck Index Meccas that you all seem to. I started with 15 minutes today, and wore my HR monitor and watched the HR climb from the 90s up to 141 just by sitting there. I think next time I'll weigh myself before and after to see how much water I lose.

Take a bandana ala an old west train robber and try a jog. Cheap way to simulate altitude training ;)

How does he know you ask? This winter when it was 10 I went out and ran with one (poor mans facemask), about 2 miles in I just couldn't breath so I took it off and dealt with the windburn instead.

A little over 3 miles tonight. Probably could have eeked out another mile or so, but the Royals game is starting, and we're finally in a pennant race Gotta watch these since they don't come around that often.

Suck index of 168. So not bad.

Ran a 5K yesterday and for some reason it was struggle @ 9min/miles. Not sure what was going on. Normally my HR is 125 and it's easy going but yesterday is was 133 which isn't high but it's higher and I was def dragging. Weird.

First interval repeats in three weeks. Better than it thought it'd go, but I had to cut the last two of six intervals short. Heart rate was getting out of control. First four were one k meters at sub six min pace, but the last two were closer to a quarter mile than half.

What has your training been like lately? What was the weather like yesterday compared to the runs you're comparing this to? Did you run in the sun? Stressed out yesterday? Too many things to factor in...You get the point. It could've just been a bad day. Don't let a recovery run get in your head (for good or bad). I wouldn't get concerned until it becomes a clear trend.

:(

Was at the soccer field with my youngest son, wasn't doing much I anything - about to leave the field and my son runs to the goal on the other end and tells me to try and score. Like an idiot I take my leg back like I'm Messi trying to win the WC and as I start to follow through I feel my right quad pop. Can't walk for 15-30 seconds. Limp to my car and I'm now at the ER sitting here in a decent amount of pain. I'm pretty sure it's a bad tear. I'm so upset right now. It was stupid.

Ugh. That sucks.

Though I can honestly say this is something I would do. Hope it's not too bad, and hope you feel better soon.

Yeah, hopefully just a bad sprain.

Back home. Mostly a waste except for the pain mess. They x-rayed it even though that was pointless. Some specialized nurse came in and did some work with my leg and asked me questions but she seemed mostly clueless. She did say she thinks I tore something but she obviously had no clue. Sending me to the ortho tomorrow if I can get in.

Decent amount of pain but manageable. Percocet and a whiskey have helped. Still upset - just sucks because I was really getting back in to things and this is a multiple week layoff or more.

Good to know thank you. 5k tonight in 23:35. I felt a lot better and ran the last mile at 7:05 pace.

Nice!

Ran a 5 miler yesterday morning and towards the end my left calf was getting tight on me. Had not run on the trail since last Wednesday due to my day off thurs and rain on Friday which forced me to the treadmill, then I usually take a 2 day recovery after that since I am getting old and decrepit.

Calf would simply not loosen up.....was in some pain yesterday but this morning was still very tight in a localized area. Walked 1/2 mile then tried jogging with it but just did not feel right so I shut it down. I have a doc appt. this morning. With my heel issue last year and now this, I am really not wanting to drop out again this year. If I have to I will rest it for a wek or so if it means an early taper. I have 24 days til raceday. I tried my elliptical and stationary bike at home and the calf wasn;t stressed much at all (especially on the bike) so maybe I will have to do that for a few days just for cardio.

Grrrrrr.....

Hopefully it's just a knot that needs worked out. My calves are always a thing of constant maintenance. They're finicky as all hell, but are also pretty damn tough to really do some damage to (famous last words  ). Fingers crossed for ya.

Maybe its that GD treadmill that's doing it?

I'm hoping that's all it is. I only did the treadmill that one day and it was 3 days of no pain or discomfort, but yesterday was the first time running outside in 5 days. I always start out rough on my first run after my long runs. I am getting some compression sleeves today, so I am hoping they will also help.

Been trying to follow on here but work and life have been hard.

I'm ramping up for NYC Marathon in early November.

I've done a few 18-20 mile long runs with a few hills/speed workouts mid week.

I feel pretty strong right now and a bit worried about peaking too early.

Reading online, looking like PRing in NYC is tough due to crowded streets. Regardless, I'll see if I can pull it off. My PR is 3:29:11 at Philadelphia where I ran the first 19-20 with Ned.

Keep up the good runs fellas!

I'll try to post more frequently going forward.
