**** OFFICIAL **** LOST - The TV Series (1 Viewer)

A few random points.

1) The magnet bringing people to the island.  I can see this as a possibility as it could possibly explain how Rousseau's boat crashed, the drug smuggling plane and flight 815 being on the island.  But, if everything is brought to the island by the magnet, how does that theory explain the Black Rock being there, obviously from 100+ years ago.  Even with cannons and rivets made from metal, I don't know if it would be strong enough to draw a large wooden ship to the island.  If the magnet were that strong, it would have also sucked the gun and flashlight away from whoever was holding it and stuck it to the wall.

I'm leaning more towards it's use as a power source.

Is the exercise bike somehow "plugged in" to be some form of power source?

2) Did it look like there was some form of explosion/fire that occured around the magnet?  To me it looked like part of the wall was gone and other parts looked charred.

3) The bright light shining up.  While very basic, I simply thought it was a product of the bright light that was shone on Jack as he entered into the "tunnel."  Is it possible that that light, reflected off various mirrors could grow in strength and bounce off the mirror at the bottom of the hatch and shine up?

4) The security system.  This may have been addressed in the Season 1 thread, but I really don't feel like poring over the last pages in hopes of finding a small tidbit.  Was it only me who heard a distinct clanking, like an anchor being brought up as Locke was being dragged into the hole?  With all the theories of nanobots and "creatures" I'm growing more and more convinced that it's something mechanical.
The problem with Rousseau's is that she said they heard the numbers and that is why they came to the island. I can't remember if she said there was a storm or shallow reef, but she probably would have said something if they felt like they were tractor beamed (by a magnet) into the island.
A very strong magnet is going to screw up compasses....could be the Black Rock crew thought they were headed in a different direction.
Or the Black Rock was beached and the magnet is slowly pulling it inland.

Then why didn't Jacks key react earlier if it's so powerful? IT was only when he leaned in towards the wall that it lifted up.

There was an episode in season 1 where Sayid noticed that his compass was off significantly. He talked about it with Jack.

Great show!!!!!!!!!!! The creators must love the fact that there are probably thousands of similar threads all over the internet.

I didn't see season 1 but I did catch a little of the season finale and saw this episode with friends. We were supposed to watch Indians White Sox but I guess not.

Anyway, here is my theory. Obviously since I haven't kept up with this thing I'm not that confident in it and its probably been thought of before but highlight below to read what I think is going on.

There was never a plane crash. They have been on the island in quarantine the entire time. Some/most/all of these people's pre-island lives and even chunks of their lives on the island are nothing more than hallucinations. That is why you see people in suits and boys appear and vanish. That is why a guy can hit the lottery and keep seeing the same numbers over and over. Its all in their heads. Probably not everyone on the island is real at all. They are being quarantined and the security system is there to monitor them.
:bs: Watch the first season and report back.
Nah, there's no chance I'm gonna sit down and watch. But I'd thought I'd share. Have fun!

 I forgot about that.

But I guess it doesn't really explain how the Black Rock got that far inland. I've gotta think about that one.

Perfect point. If the key doesn't move until 2 feet away, it sure isn't going to be bringing down planes and pulling in boats. Disrupting compasses seems much more likely since they are pretty sensitive devices.

I read somewhere (at this point I've been to probably 6 Lost message boards and other sites on the net), I thought I saw somewhere that it is scientifically possible that the black rock itself could be a giant magnet all on its own. Whether the scientists/researchers were able to figure out a way to get it as a conductor for an electrical source is another question to ponder over . . .

This is also what I was getting at in a more roundabout way. If the magnet were that strong anything metal anywhere near it would be flying towards it. Appliances from inside the hatch, the flashlight that Kate dropped, Jack's gun, the guns that are inside the hatch.

And raises the question, how do you get a modern washer and dryer to an uncharted island?
Fedex will find it. Or maybe brown.
Tom Hanks is probably already representin' with his boy Wilson.
Not that they would do it in the show, but it would be a great FedEx commercial if they did a commercial right before the show came back from commercial (so we thought it was the show) and in the middle of Jack and Desmonds face-off, a FedEx comes by with a package, Desmond stops for a second and signs for it and then they go back to the standoff after the FedEx guys says thanks and leaves.

IIRC, the explanation at that time is that a large power source could disrupt compasses. The magnet thing does not work for the Black Rock ship if you date it back pre-electicity. Unless we are going under the theory the place is a natural magnet, but then the Jack's key scene doesn't really work.

ETA:

So the question is, what is the "large" power source for? Its gotta be more than just running computers and appliances.

 Especially if it was in operating long enough to draw in the Black Rock.....100+ years.

So maybe the power cables are drawing power from the island, not to the island.

Desmond = ConEd employee

- If the other driver who died was Shannon's father, that flashback has to be more than four years ago (rules out Sara getting movement back and her legs at the same time Locke loses his). Didn't Shannon and Boone's surviving parents get married when the kids were 8 & 10?
Yeah, and then Shannon's father died sometime after that, leaving his money to Boone's mother. I don't understand what you're even getting at here. Shannon's father married Boone's mother.
I was just saying that that flashback was more than four years ago, and therefore debunking the theory that once she got her movement back, Locke lost his.
Just because Shannon's dad married Boone's mom, doesn't mean he died right after. The marriage was pretty recent, probably 1 or 2 years and the accident was 2 years before that. It just means that Shannon's dad was married for a bunch of years before dying.

Over/under for this thread at the start of next week's episode . . . 100 pages?
I will take the over. Damn, I kept checking a few days ago to see if there were any posts, and then I check this morning and I am 10+ pages behind. This discussion will get out of hand because a new page will start before anyone gets a chance to reply and so people will have no idea what anyone else is talking about and then reply again to say someone else is wrong. This is going to be a cluster####, so I will definitely take the over.

Current run rate for this thread has been 1 new page for each hour after the episode ended and that's including when people were sleeping. 100 pages might be easy money for those that took the over.

I can't wait to see the "Everybody Hates Hugo" episode. Maybe they'll say why he was in the Psych ward.
I loved it when Hurley (when did everyone start calling him Hugo? I know thats his name, but I thought everyone still called him Hurley) told Jack the story of being in a phych ward, the guy with the numbers, winning the lottery, his grandfather dying, his store burning down, and seeing the numbers on the hatch, and that the numbers are cursed, etc etc.......like a 3 minute story and the only thing Jack says is "You were in a psych ward?" :lmao:

Good stuff. I also like Hurley's comment about Jack's bedside manner or lack there of.

And if it slows down (which it probably will) and averages 10 pages a day.....that's a lot of reading....

"Yeah, what do they call that?""Bedside manners?"

"Yeah, yours sucks"

Look at THIS PICTURE.  That is a MODERN washer and dryer set.
 edit: I know those washer and dryers were designed to have a retro look, but those are the brand new models that you can find in your local Home Depot, Lowe's, etc.
:lmao: Are you kidding me? You can barely see them.
I started to make a stupid post about being able to zoom in and read the model number through magnification. :bag: In all seriousness though, the main reason these stuck out to me as being new washing machines was the profile. Just had the same lines as a set of washer/dryers that stood out to me recently while walking through HD or Lowes. Much like this:

http://www.ajmadison.com/phpdocs/ajtest/it...p?sku=GHW9400PW

The ones I remember seeing before were shown on the floor in 2 colors: Orange and either a gray or some muted shade of purple.

Regardless, if these were older models, wouldn't they have big protruding dials instead of a more sleek appearance? In other words, I don't see any controls on the machines in this picture:

http://www.dieoxidiertenschweine.de/losts2c.jpg

which leads me to believe that it's a push button set-up. Not exactly something you'd see on a machine out of the 60's.

I think the flurry of posting will probably decrease as the season goes on. Right now there's the excitment of the new season starting, and bringing back theories from the old thread etc. Towards the end of last season there wasn't as much posting activity. Then again, it could have been because the thread was almost 100 pages. With more FBG members posting, I can see increased numbers in comparasin to last year's thread(s), but I wouldn't expect this much activity after every episode. I could be wrong though.

Regardless, I know I'm going to be reading through this everyday now anyway :bag:

We already figured out exactly what model they are, try to keep up. ;)

Now that I think about it, I think this is the exact same thing the guy at the washer/dryer message board said it was.

That was probably before we knew that the Black Rock was a ship. No way that could become a magnet.

Completely glossed over in all of this is that there is actually a message board for people to discuss washers and dryers.

If that magnet is supposed to be the one causing all of the compass problems and possibly the cause of ship/plane crashes, we're going to have some major holes in the show.

Or maybe, just maybe, the props person thoughts "eh, these look 70's-ish, no one will notice".

What if they're not a washer/dryer set??? :tinfoilhat: Seriously though. The guy's got an ancient computer system with a tapedrive mainframe and he's got a 2004 top of the line washer/dryer set?
the weapons looked modern too. Anyone have photos that we can post to an NRA site for an official date-stamp opinion?

And people are reading it so closely, they responded to the question in a minute!

ok, its been a while since I took physics, but correct me if I am wrong: A megnet's power can be increased and decreased with increased and decreased charge, respectivly.Large Power supply = increase the Megnet strenght = plane crash

Think of it in government terms, like the FAA. The computer system may look old, but that is because it is the 1980 upgrade that got delivered in 2004. You should have the seen the old system in the hatch in 2003, it was a whole wall of abacuses which is why there was a bunkbed and they needed two guys before the upgrade. The other guy got let go when the new system got delivered.
