Raiders hire Art Shell as new head coach (1 Viewer)

What's the deal with recycling an old black head coache that can't get the job done rather than hiring an up and coming young white head coach.

I am very happy about this hiring. I felt like Art got a bum deal last time around and kudos to him for taking the high road, forgiving, and forgetting.

I've always liked that Al Davis is a man of second-chances, takes risks, and gives minorities an equal shake. There are many reasons to not like Al, but there are a few to like him as well.

Shell took over a team that had been 5-10, 7-9, 8-8, and 1-3 in the previous 3.25 years. He went 7-5 with that 1-3 team, and then 12-4 the next year (and to the AFC championship game). He was fired after 10-6 and 9-7 seasons, and the team didn't reach 9-7 again for six years. He has a 58.7% winning percentage as a head coach.I don't think there's any measure which would suggest that Shell is anything less than an above-average coach.

Wonder how that call went?

Nobody wanted this job, I'd like to see the Raiders do well but as a Niners fan all I can say is welcome to Hell. Your team appears to be securing its place in the abyss.

Ya, but he's been away for YEARS. He wasn't THAT good of a head coach either.

Every time I think of Art Shell standing on the sidelines, I think of a clueless deer in headlights.

I was gonna say one step forward, three steps back. But I simply think they've been taking steps back the past few years. They're a rudderless ship.
Just curious, but how does a coach that is akin to a "clueless deer in headlights" make it 6 years in the NFL, with only 1 losing season, and that was 7-9? He even won 7 games in a year that he took over for Shanahan, who was 1-3 with the team, if memory serves correctly.I think he'll be fine, and an upgrade. He knows teh situation he's headed into w/ Davis, and I'm sure he addressed it.

People talk about the lack of emotion in the negative. I think it's a positive. Keep a level head, address issues behind the door. NObody knocks Belichick for being emotionless. Shell may not be the X-O guy that BB is, but his first stint in the NFL went about how BB's went.

How they did love the long ball with Hostetler and Schnroder. They've still got the tools to use it too. One other thing that people haven't mentioned was the loss of Napolean McCallum on MNF. Granted it was late in his tenure, but take the best RB off any team, for a career ending injury and it will hurt for a year or two.

Not to mention the loss of Bo Jackson to injury and Marcus Allen to his feud with Davis.

Yes, I didn't mention them. That's a lot of talent to lose, and still have only 1 losing season, and that was 7-9.

I think it's a good hire. Much like BB, his first job wasn't a super success, but moderate. I don't think he's the next BB, but I think poeple are being a little harder on Shell than he deserves. He's an upgrade over the last 2 coaches. That's for sure.

As a life-long Raider fan, I'm somewhat cautiously optimistic about Art Shell's hiring. Art's not a great "Xs and Os" guy, nor is he a master strategist. He has been popular with the players, but I've also felt that he was too much of a "yes man" to Al Davis' wishes. He didn't handle the "Bo versus Marcus" RB issue well at all.

I'm really sorry that the egos of Jon Gruden and Al Davis couldn't co-exist. I think Al's biggest problem with Gruden was that the focus of the media was on Gruden, and he became the "face of the franchise", instead of the players and the "Raider mystique".
Highlighted Shell's top qualification for the Raiders HC job.

We'll know more about the ff impact once they get an OC.
PFT is hearing the new OC with be an old Ratiders OC, Tom Walsh, who has been out of football for 7 years.
WALSH WAS PRESENT AT SHELL PRESSER

Jim Jenkins of The Sacramento Bee reports that former Raiders assistant coach Tom Walsh was "[c]onspicuous by his presence" at the press conference re-introducing Art Shell as head coach of the Raiders.

We've heard that Walsh, who has been out of football for, by all appearances, seven years, will rejoin the team in his former position of offensive coordinator.

Asked on Saturday if he was coming back to the team for which he worked from 1982 through 1995, Walsh reportedly said, "To be determined."
