I will only say a couple of things ...

As a Steeler fan, this just sucks, but I remain very hopeful

As a Ben fan, I hope he really learns his leason from this. If ... IF, he can recover and return to his old self, I really hope he remembers this and wises his young ### up.

Young people can be so damn stubborn at times.

While I realize everyone wants to know right now what's going on so they can run to the waiver wire and make a move, please, let's not forget what's really going on here. A man has had a serious accident.

My prayers and thoughts are for his well being right now. The waiver wire can wait.  It's times like this that fantasy football just doesn't seem important. It's times like this when rivalries don't seem important. It's times like this when waiver wires don't seem important. It's times like this that remind us of what's reallt important.

The only thing that seems really important right now is that Ben is going to be alright, I hope. I'm not busting anyone's chops over this but I hope while everyone makes their moves that they think about Ben and remember he's a real man with serious injuries. He's not feeling much like fantasy right now. And I hope we're all better than just worrying about fantasy football.
AMEN.The Steeler Faithful are pulling for you, Big Ben.

GET WELL SOON.

Re: The "serious" knee injuries.

I'm betting we're talking serious cuts/scrapes/skid burns, etc. That mgiht explain the discrepancy between what the police saw ("look at all the blood!") vs. what the doctors are saying ("in the big picture, it doesn't matter").

I doubt too many police are trained to diagnose a torn ACL by looking at it.

Roethlisberger broke his jaw, nose, his left sinus cavity, he also suffered a 9-inch laceration to the back of his head, lost some teeth and has knee injuries from hitting the pavement. A plastic surgeon has been called in...

Not Good. Hopefully he'll recover....

I'm sorry the guy got hurt, but not any more sorry than I am whenever I hear about some random guy that got seriously hurt, or killed, because I don't know him any better than some random guy I read about in the news. Maybe if I was a steeler fan it would be different, but whenever something like this happens someone also chooses to "take the high road" and reasses thier life priorities. Its ok, but a little arbitrary unless you do it every time you hear about a crash.

RE: Fox Sports...ESPN is carrying similar photos of the blood pool, so direct your criticism to them, too.
Now that's a laugh. ESPN's "Contact Us" page doesn't even allow you to contact them. All it does is lead you to FAQs.

No link...

Clayton just reported on ESPN News that latest reports from hospital and team are that the jaw, nose, and head gash are the worst of the injuries. Knees are apparently ok. Saying the general feeling is that Big Ben "dodged a bullet" and it's "very likely" he'll be under center for the opener.

Just paraphrasing as heard, so take it for what it's worth.

Never underestimate the power of denial. There's NO way they can make that determination right now.

Can I get a cliffnotes of what has happened here?
"Roethlisberger lost most of his teeth, fractured his left sinus cavity bone, suffered a nine-inch laceration to the back of his head and a broken jaw, and injured both of his knees when he hit the ground, police said."

What exactly does the bolded part mean?

No kidding.... they haven't even done a CAT scan or anything beyond preliminary head checks. The first priority is to get him into surgery and keep him alive (hyperbole I suppose in this situation), but then determine the extent of mental damage after the scope of physical damage is under control and/or repaired. That the front of his head landed in a windshield and then the back of his head snapped back and hit the concrete says to me his brain is certainly not "all okay".

Of course, riding without a helmet probably told us that much.

if you push above your left nostril, you'll notice just inside the cartilege is hard cartilege adjacent to a partial protusion of the skull. That's your left sinus cavity bone. It's just a bit of skull that dips out... it's not really vital, but I'm sure it hurts a lot more than the actual extent of the injury.

Rest assured he doesn't throw with his nose...

The real problem is that 9inch laceration on the back of his head. Temporal / Occipital lobe injuries could give him problems in depth perception, partial blindness, and various other focusing problems.

Lucky it wasn't the back of his head through the glass and the front of his head hitting the pavement, or we might be talking Big Ben past tense.

For crying out loud. Photo's of a pool of blood? Unnecessary.
They'll likely take those pics down.
they should
Yeah the blood pool is unnecessary.
Send Foxsports feedback. And get those pictures off there.
You've got to be kidding. Big freakin deal. My kids see worse than that in g rated movies.

I know.. it's not like his boob popped out.

Anyone comment yet on how when he did that ESPN interview about not wearing a helmet he talked about riding a Harley and a chopper, specifically saying it was relaxing and wasn't like he was riding a sports bike? Not that it's really any less stupid not to wear a helmet on those, but the bike he was riding today looks an awful lot like a sport bike to me... What a ####### anyway.

Obviously I can't confirm this in this case, but there's no way a patient with a potential head injury goes under general anesthesia without a head CT to determine the full extent of all injury. You're not repairing facial fractures and debriding/repairing multiple facial lacerations without attempting to diagnose a major head injury first.

The facial fractures were almost certainly fully diagnosed during the head CT (included cuts of the facial bones to aid reconstruction if necessary).

The sinus fracture could mean anything. There are many sinuses in the skull and many, many small sinus bones. Purely speculating again, but the multiple missing teeth, fractured jaw, and questionable eye involvement point to maxillary sinus involvement - the big sinus cavity below each eye and to the side of the nose as Andy posted - but multiple other sinus bones may be involved.

He was riding his Hayabusa, not a Harley. Not that it makes any difference when one smacks into a cage, head first.Stupid move? IMO, yes and I ride a Harley with a helmet (full face). However, it was his choice.

What wasn't his choice was the 62 year old lady pulling a New Yorker in front of him...

No, however police see, on a daily basis, grievous injuries and are capable of determining on the spot whether an injury is serious or not. Obviously they aren't soctors or sprts surgeons but to dismiss an officers account of an injury as uninformed is a mistake. Many times police are on scene before paramedics and are required to be able to determine the extent of injuries. I'm not saying that their on the spot observations are accurate and have impact on a players career. But if a policeman at the scene says there are serious injuries involved, then they aren't talking about cuts and scrapes. But all this speculation about him being fine in 8 weeks to his career over is hilarious. Not one of us here knows anything about his injuries, and none of us is more qualified to categorize his injuries than even the most inexperienced cop on the scene. All we do know is that Ben paid for his refusal to wear a helmet and his career is in jeopardy, whether short term or long, because of it.

Yeah, but do you have to have in to view it? :D
