Was at the game last night, and also Tivo'd it and went through all the plays with the first string in there in slow mo to watch how various players did. Focused on the Texans
QB-
Carr looked improved but not great. He seemed a little calmer in the pocket than last year, including completing one pass while a DE had a handful of his jersey from behind. Rosenfels looked good though it was against the 2nd string D. He seemed very comfortable running the offense and made pretty good decisions.
RB-
Smith gave you about what you'd expect, 2-3 yards and a cloud of dust. If DD is out though I won't be surprised to see him in the mix on third downs just for blitz pickup unless the younger guys prove they are competent there. Lundy was definitely the best RB on the Texans side. In particular I thought he was good at making that initial cut and burst, though I didn't think he had that great of top end speed. Reminded me a lot of DD in that respect. Chris Taylor had a decent night statistically but he didn't look as good as Lundy. It seemed to me he didn't have a good cut. His best runs came when the hole was straight ahead or where he could bounce it out, but he didn't seem to make that quick shift and come out of it with speed very well. UFA Damien Rhodes got a few carries and looked ok, but we really didn't see enough of him to make a good judgement.
O-line-
The right side of the line did very well especially in the run game. The left side not as much. I watched Seth Wand, the left tackle, on quite a few of the slow mo plays. One of the knocks on him is that he spends a lot of time on the ground, and I noticed that hasn't changed. He nearly gave up one sack when Carr was in, letting the DE get a tug on Carr's jersey as he threw. Spencer and Winston looked better to me than Wand did, though I didn't Tivo all of the 2nd string's plays.
TEs-
The real story for the Texans was Owen Daniels playing with the second unit. He was about what we expected, hard for linebackers to cover, but needed work on his blocking. He ended with 4 catches. Joppru had the one catch, but I really didn't notice he, Putzier, or Bruener do much with their time.
WRs-
AJ was wide open for what would have been a big game on one of the passes that went to Moulds. He was pretty much what you'd expect, though KC did do a decent job in coverage. As far as WR3, I imagine Walter probably still has the job, but I think Arena Leaguer Derrick Lewis has probably locked up the WR4 slot at this point in time, at least until J. Mathis returns. I was watching quite a few of his routes and he has good speed but he didn't seem quite as crisp in his cuts as you'd like. He also showed a willingness to block downfield, though drew a holding penalty on one play.
Overall Offensive impression-
Kubiak seemed to stay true to his past in terms of the run/pass play selection. Others have mentioned the bootlegs... in addition to KC being aggressive and biting on them a lot, I'd have to say the success in the running game with Lundy had a lot to do with their success. I'd expect the running game to continue to be the primary focus for the team, with the passing game used to keep the defenses honest.
DL:
I didn't really notice a lot of pressure on the QB from the 1st string while at the game, and watching the game on Tivo confirmed it. I watched Mario Williams on every play. There were only a few running plays that came his way. A few times he did manage to move his guy back but wasn't able to shed the blocker to make a tackle. On pass plays, he frequently was double-teamed. He still got some penetration, but only one play that I can recall was he anywhere close to the QB, and Green got the pass off quick. I did notice that twice he seemed to get off-balance with too much weight going forward and got thrown forward to the ground by Turley.
LB:
Demeco Ryans and Shaunte Orr were the only two LBs who stood out in my mind, though Troy Evans seemed to be all over the field on special teams plays and had a half sack with the 3rd string. I don't believe Orr played until the backups went in though. The Texans started Anderson and Green at OLB, which I haven't heard the why of yet. Ryans was in on several tackles early on and seemed to have a good nose for the ball. Beat writer John McClain said it is possible Green will win one starting job and Shauntee Orr may win the other at OLB. I hadn't realized Green was even in the running vs Greenwood.
Secondary: I didn't focus on the secondary as much. Lewis Sanders filled in for Phillip Buchanon and looked reasonably competent... I thought he might have looked better than Faggins did last year. I doubt he'd replace a healthy Buchanon though.
Overall defensive impression-
The defense looked improved, though the Chiefs didn't have much difficulty running the ball with their first unit. The 1st unit didn't generate much pressure on the QB, but the 2nd and 3rd units did. This is probably the first time in club history that the Texans backups have outplayed another team's backups. It doesn't mean a super bowl of course, but given the utter lack of depth the Texans have had at various positions in the past, it definitely is good news for the team. Other than the 1st team, the Texans pretty much shut down the Chiefs, who had about 20 yards passing for the game until they hit a bomb late in the 4th quarter. The Chiefs playing their 4th and 5th string QBs probably contributed to that quite a bit though.
