The forgotten TE (1 Viewer)

SF wants to use only 1 wideout (A Bryant) and 3 TEs. Could this be good news for Eric Johnson? He could get off to a great start this season. I think his value lies in PPR leagues for sure.

I agree. It was just before the year before last he led the team in receptions (I'm pretty sure without checking). He's commonly hurt so that might have something to do with people not looking at him. I think in he could be a very nice value in a PPR league.

I beg to differ, Vernon Davis will take over soon enough.

The real TE everyone has forgotten about and has out-right been undrafted in %90 of the leagues im in is Desmond Clark.

He lost somewhere around 20 pounds in the off-season and it has been said the Bears intend to use him alot more this year.

If you were playing in a points per injury game, he'd be invaluable. He's talented, but he's spent more time on his back than Madonna.

I drafted him late as my second TE. I heard a report out of training camp that Smith and Davis weren't connecting too well. I think Johnson will return to his old form and prove to be a steal.

Eric Johnson had an 80+ catch season a mere two years ago. I have no idea why everyone is sleeping on him. If Arnaz Battle can't stay healthy, EJ will be the #2 target in the passing offense until Vernon Davis's development progresses.

Thing about Johnson is the health issues. Doesn't he already have a hangnail? Given that, I'm running with a single TE for the first couple weeks pretty much due to the fact that Johnson and Desmond Clark went undrafted in my league. One of them should be there for me to snag in a week or so and there should be a clearer picture on how both are being targeted after a couple real games to boot.

Dez Clark bears a bit of watching, especially if Griese gets to play more than Grossman. Dan Graham? Perhaps in TD heavy leagues, if nothing else. A lot depends on the Branch situation I guess.

Re-read my initial post. The 49ers want to play 3 TEs and 1 WR, so at the very least they will start 2. Johnson will see his share and more of looks.

Obviously you want a backup plan for your TE, but I'd rather take someone like Eric Johnson over some obscure WR #7 or #8 and take my chances with his injuries. When Johnson is healthy he can be very good. That's more than I can say about that WR #7.

This is what I'm hearing. Davis isn't going to be an impact player right away. It's all about how healthy Johnson is.

Nolan said they will have times where they have 3 TE's on the field, not that they want to use that formation extensively.

Don't have the desire to weed thru maybe another day...one of the Nolan chats at 49ers.com talks about how they're playing him like a FB at times. I heard him on the radio talk about this too. They want the option of Smith "owning him". Calling out a block and him going in motion and lining up left or right, going out for a pass etc. He gave Smith some comfort and confidence and really helped their line play. Keep in mind this was "in spots" and not like they'd run the whole game like that plus....it was weeks ago.

So at that point, Davis was going to be the TE and get his feet wet. Johnson would be used as FB or spell Davis in an effort to find time for him. Very different from a starting TE to rely on in FF.

The thing to keep in mind when teams get "happy" with the two TE offense in preseason is simple. Two TEs means the D is gonna ring it right up the gut. You have to have bullies for Guards and a C and a whole lot of push from your OL to even think about running this often. This is often scrapped into a gimmick play or occasional set once the regular season gets under way. Last year, the Niners certainly didn't have that from their OL. I know they have Allen and Jonas returns but I don't think many NFL OLs could pull it off nowadays. Think "hogs", Niners are a long way away from those linemen

Johnson has been the best TE in SF all along. I hate to see a guy like Davis go down, but some serious awarmess of Johnson will at least be had from this. They guy is a very good TE. Did you see some of those catches yesterday?

I drafted him as my 2nd TE in an initial dynasty draft this year. He will be a UFA after the season. I looked at his numbers from previous years before drafting him, he has put up top 10 numbers when healthy. He just turned 27, a guy to have in dynasty leagues.(if he stays healthy)

Has this guy ever been healthy?

EXACTLY!! He's never been healthy AND still look at the numbers he produces! Your point is my point.
