Choosing a defense for the playoffs (1 Viewer)

I'm fortunate enough to be thinking ahead at 7-2.

Any sites that ranks total offensive fantasy points by team?

Trying to compare to defensive rankings to get possible favorable matchups for the playoffs.

Obviously looking for tough defenses against weak offenses.

Everywhere I've searched I see individual position stats, no team stats.

Thanks in advance and will answer yours.

Not sure if you are a subscriber or not, but we have some of most diverse info around - but using FBG d scoring. Unfortunately, D scoring rules vary so greatly between leagues that it is difficult to really predict.

This is a project you'll have to do on your own.

Try Strength of Schedule for defenses.
I have used this but don't know the statistical basis for the "hot" red teams and "cold" blue teams.I was looking for something such as Team A offense averages xx fantasy offensive points per week. Team B gives up xx average FF pts. per week. I wanted the favorable defensive matchups for weeks 14-16. I guess I could use the FBG's defensive rankings for those weeks and see how strong the offenses are by position. Just seems like a lot of work. :wall:

*psssst* - Check out the Chiefs. They play the Raiders twice, including week 16, the Browns and the Dolphins. :moneybag:

It's too bad that there's not some way to avoid a bad matchup. Darn. :kicksrock:
You could always carry two. Check the NFL schedule for Weeks 14-16 and compare it with the free agent D's in your league. If you're in the playoffs it could definitely pay off and could prove far more valuable than that 4th or 5th WR on your bench. I'm targeting teams that play the Raiders down the stretch even if it means carrying 2 or even possibly 3 D's. A shutout and 9 sacks is a fair chunk of points in our league and could be huge come Weeks 14-16.ETA: upon further review it appears that you were possibly being sarcastic :bag:

FPs scored/allowed
Where can I find them by TEAM?
Each league has it's own scoring rules for DSTs, so unless you're using FBG's scoring system, it's going to be hard to find.It only takes about 30-45 minutes to do in Excel, though, if you know what you're doing....

Go to http://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/tmstats2006.htm

Find the Team Defense table.

Highlight it (click just to the left of "Denver" and drag to just the right of the last stat for the 49ers) and hit CTRL-C.

Open Wordpad or any other text editor go to Edit>Paste Special (Unformatted Text).

Change the two- or three- word team names (i.e. New York Giants, St. Louis) to one word names (NY-A or Giants, or StL or Rams, etc).

Go to Edit>Replace. Under "Find What:" enter a single space. Under "Replace with:" enter a single comma.

Every space should now be a comma.

File>Save as... name it something like DST.csv. Use the .csv extension.

Open Excel (or the free version, Open Office), and open your file. You'll now have that same handy webpage chart in Excel format.

Now, the fun part:

Use your league scoring system to multiply and divide the numbers in the appropriate columns.

You're going to have to come up with some formulas.

Unfortunately, there isn't one easy chart that has all the data you'll probably need. Also look on nfl.com/stats for the scoring tables for passing defense, rushing defense, scoring defense, turnovers, etc., you'll have to make some more tables and copy/paste some columns into your master spreadsheet.

So, when you get to the turnovers table, Arizona has 9 INTs and 11 Fumble Recoveries. Multiply the INT column by your scoring for INTs and the FUM column by your scoring for Fum Recs.

Add everything together into one big formula and there's your Defensive FPs scored.

They are ranked by team as FP scored and FP allowed - there is a column labelled "Def."

I'm confused.

Sorry I guess I wasn't specific enough earlier but I was looking for team totals by offense/defense.

I can see from the AZ example below that if I add the offensive positions I get 56.8 pts.

FPs Scored QB RB WR TE PK

Arizona 14.6 10.8 23.5 1.6 6.3

That would tell me how many offensive points AZ is averaging. OK I get that!

Now I could go to the AZ "allowed" and see they're surrendering 66.6 points to other offenses on average.

Arizona 16.0 21.1 15.6 4.6 9.3

If I ran this for all teams, then I could look for mismatches where weaker offenses were up against stronger defenses. This may help me select a more favorable defense for the playoffs.

I think the def. points under "scored" are points that the AZ defense is scoring via INT's, Fumbles, Yds. allowed etc. The def. points under "allowed" are what other defenses are averaging against the AZ offense.

That I'm not sure about.

what I've been doing (for one league, haven't had the time to do it for all of my leagues) is look at the top performers section. Specifically for MFL, go to reports>platers> top performers, sort for YTD defense, and top 60 teams. You get a table of weekly scores based on your scoring. Copy the entire table and paste ito excel.

here is how to turn that into a points against: use thistable. it's kind of a tricky process to do this, but if you're Excel savvy you can figure it out.

Suffice it to say - the bottom five teams for points allowed give up about the same as the top five scoring teams. That is, if you could play Oakland every week, that woud be about as good as having the Ravens defense, at a much cheaper cost. In fact, using the WW, I think you could go all season swapping teams around and get top 5 production.

Based on my leagues defense scoring (see spoiler),

mytagid = Math.floor( Math.random() * 100 );document.write("

Fumble Recoveries 0-10 2 points each

Interceptions Caught 0-10 3 points each

Sacked a QB 0-10 2 points each

Safeties 0-10 2 points each

Total Points Allowed 0-0 10

Total Points Allowed 1-6 7

Total Points Allowed 7-14 3

Total Points Allowed 15-20 0

Total Points Allowed 21-99 -3

Number of Defensive TDs 0-10 6 points each

*** SPOILER ALERT! Click this link to display the potential spoiler text in this box. ***");document.close();

the YTD points allwed is as follows:

Oak 178

Cle 134

Pit 133

Ari 123

Mia 111

Det 110

Sea 102

Buf 101

SF 93

TB 91

Hou 88

Ten 88

Atl 86

I hadn't seen this - this would have saved me some time :bag: the numbers I calculated are identical as to if you do this (in MFL): reports>league>points allowed - by position, sort by Def.

ok, here's a WW defense combo that has promise: Cincy and KC.

week....team...opponent....opponent rank

10.......KC......MIA............28

11.......KC......OAK............32

12......CIN......CLE............31

13......KC.......CLE...........31

14......CIN.....OAK...........32

15??????????????????

16.....KC.......OAK..........32

week 15 is a problem. Cin plays Indy (ranked 1st in points allowed), KC plays SD (ranked 2nd). As this is a playoff game, it will be extremely important not to play either of these teams. If you have the roster spot, might stash StL, or you might play the WW and look to get Buf (plays Mia) or GB (plays Det).

I think that is correct - for def. points allowed, it is whatever opposing defenses are scoring when they play AZ.

Very nice combination thanks. Both are FA's on the wire so I'll be dumping some dead wood to get them.
