If he breaks Marino's record, they'll share the MVP, like Manning and McNair did. They might anyway, depending on what happens for the rest of the year.
I'm not dogging you but I would really like to see the reasoning on this.Please...convince me.I really think Brees is the most valuable player, but LT2 will get the votes for his ridiculous season.
You sure about that? Taking 30-35 TDs off one team and reducing them to normal numbers, say 15, even 20, with Turner would be a huge hit. Also, they have 1st year starting QB, how much more pressure would he see if teams didn't have to worry about Tomlinson?SD would still be a winning team without him, IMO.
Very good point. I think many are overlooking how Rivers' job has been considerably easier having LT behind him . If it's any other RB back there, it's hard to imagine Rivers and the offense overall having nearly the same success. You sure about that? LT = MVPBrees= Comeback POY
I don't get people saying Come back player of the year???What did he come back from?He was one of the top QB's last year.I know he was injured in the last game of the season, and it was considered a bad injury, but it's not like he had a bad year and was considered to be done.He had a very good year, and then was still given a HUGE contract to go play for another team.LT = MVPBrees= Comeback POY
MVP is most valuable to the team.If LT wasn't playing they would still be good with Michael Turner.Without Brees NO wouldn't be .500. He is more valuable to the team.
I agree with a lot of what you say, but I think your last paragraph is untrue and diminishes the talent, poise and stability Brees has brought to the table.People do realize that something like 34 of the Saint's 53 man roster weren't on the team last year, right? The turn around has been huge not just in win/loss, but also in terms of personnel. Brees has done a great job, but LT wins this award hands down.
Early in the season LT was their only option, and when the FD was injured/suspended he carried the team. Everytime they've needed points he's been big. And no other RB in the league could do close to what he's done. No one in the history of the league has been able to do what he's done this year.
On the other hand, several QBs in the league could approach what Brees has done in that offense with those weapons - Im not saying they'd be as good, but close, 90% or so.
I don't agree with this at all - Brees is something special to watch. I think a lot of the success in New Orleans is due to the pairing of Payton with Brees. Brees executes the plays flawlessly, whether it is a play action or a fake screen. He has a lot of poise and doesn't seem to get rattled much. I can't see QB's like Eli, Vick, or .. well anyone doing the things that Brees does there - and it isn't like he has superstud receivers. Terrance Copper, Devery Henderson? Horn and Colston go down and the number 3 and 4 guys step up. It's almost as if they could drag someone in from the stands and Brees would make him a 1000 yard receiverHe has made me a believer this year. With Bush, Colston, Brees, and McAllister to build around Payton is going to enjoy some good years with the Saints, I believePeople do realize that something like 34 of the Saint's 53 man roster weren't on the team last year, right? Peyton, Palmer, Brady, TGreen, McNabb, Hassleback are all for sure.Maybes include Bulger, Delhomme, McNair, outside shot for FavreI agree with a lot of what you say, but I think your last paragraph is untrue and diminishes the talent, poise and stability Brees has brought to the table.People do realize that something like 34 of the Saint's 53 man roster weren't on the team last year, right? First off, I'm not convinced SD would be nearly as good with Turner as the starter. Even if they were, using this logic, Sean Alexander did not deserve the MVP last year and Joe Montana would never have won either. I'm not taking anything away from Brees. He's having a great season, but what Tomlinson is doing is absolutely amazing. He is making the rest of the team better (as is Brees). No one yet has mentioned the pressure he has taken off of a 1st year starter at QB. Facing 8 man fronts constantly has allowed the receivers to see single coverage all year. Where just about every other RB has struggled against Denver, he has run all over them twice. He has 6 of the 11 rushing TDs scored against Denver. SD has scored TDs in something like 18 of the last 19 times in the red zone. When SD needed a big play against Oakland, he threw a TD pass.MVP is most valuable to the team.If LT wasn't playing they would still be good with Michael Turner.Without Brees NO wouldn't be .500. He is more valuable to the team.
The reasoning is: I *think* Drew Brees is the most valuable player to his team, but I also *think* LT2 will win the award for having one of the greatest statistical seasons in NFL history. Are you convinced of my opinion yet?I'm not dogging you but I would really like to see the reasoning on this.Please...convince me.I really think Brees is the most valuable player, but LT2 will get the votes for his ridiculous season.
You said it a lot better and with more depth though - well done.I don't agree with this at all - Brees is something special to watch. Edit: er, looks like Zamboni beat me to it
It's been said a few times. No one yet has mentioned the pressure he has taken off of a 1st year starter at QB.
A thousand pardons. I missed the one reference and subsequent response. It's been said a few times. No one yet has mentioned the pressure he has taken off of a 1st year starter at QB.
I'd agree with that for years like this one. For alot of other years, it would probably end up being the same guy.I've been saying this for years, but every sport needs to have two separate and distinct awards.1. Most Valuable Player: QB-Drew Brees-NO2. Player of the Year: RB-LaDainian Tomlinson-SDAll too often the winner of the MVP is just the player of the year.
Quoted for truth. I am been a Purdue fan my entire life, spent 4 years there for school, and Brees is probably my favorite guy to come out of the school. With that said, I don't think he deserves the MVP with what LT has done. Brees is a QB and doesn't have as many TD's as LT, NO WAY he can win the MVP.Even if Brees breaks Marino's record, I just dont see anyway he'll get a share of the MVP. LT is just going to demolish the record and he might end up with more TDs then any QB in the league. Thats just insane.
Where did you come up with this reasoning?? LT isn't going to break the record he is going to SHATTER it. He is likely to end the year with 36 rushing TD's and possibly 40 total TD's. The 36 rushing TD's alone should be more than any QB in the league. That my friend is more impressive then throwing for 5000 yards.Just my opinion....LT breaking the TD rushing record is not as impressive of an accomplishment than if Brees were to break Marino's single season yardage passing record.
He's also going to break the all-time scoring record which has been around for over four decades. And he isn't just going to break the TD record, he is going to obliterate it.I think if they both play oustanding for the remainder for rest of season, shared MVP is best choice.Just my opinion....LT breaking the TD rushing record is not as impressive of an accomplishment than if Brees were to break Marino's single season yardage passing record. LT breaking Dirkerson's single season rushing record = Marino's passing yardage record. That just my opinion. The TD rushing record has been broken several times in recent years therefore I think one needs to evaluate whether it is truly remarkable or perhaps just a trend of the times in the NFL.
I love how people say "those weapons" when talking about the Saints. Weapons like Devery Henderson, Terrence Copper, Mike Karney, Jamal Jones, Billy Miller, Mark Cambell? Heck, Joe Horn is getting old...Bush is a rookie...McAllister is coming off major knee surgery and who knows how good Colston really is ( he was a 7th round pick after all). Brees is making all of these guys look like all pros. All these guys can't all of a sudden really be this good can they? I'm a diehard Saints fan and I didn't even know who T. Copper was. I didn't know Jamal Jones was even on the roster.People do realize that something like 34 of the Saint's 53 man roster weren't on the team last year, right? Please look past your homerism and realize that LT has more TD's than Brees. A RB should not have more TD's then a QB period. That is why SA won MVP last year. That is why LT is going to win in a landslide this year. I am a BIG BIG Drew Brees guy, but really, he doesn't stand a chance at getting the MVP with the year LT is having.I love how people say "those weapons" when talking about the Saints. Throwing for 5000 yards is no mean feat - how many times has it been done before? Marino set the record in 1984, right? So 20+ years that record has held. Emmit set the TD record in 95, then it was broken in 03 by Priest Holmes, then again last year by Shaun, now again by Tomlinson. So in 11 years, it has been broken 4 times, whereas Marino's has lasted for 20 years.Where did you come up with this reasoning?? LT isn't going to break the record he is going to SHATTER it. I most certainly have NO PROBLEM with LT getting that award. I wouldn't have a problem with a split if Brees breaks Marino's record. I'm just pointing out that Brees doesn't really have the weapons that some are making him out to have. Would anyone have suggested this before the season started? He's making players that most would have considered scrubs look like all pros. Please look past your homerism and realize that LT has more TD's than Brees. I'm not trying to diminish what LT has done (and is continuing to do), but neither should Brees' accomplishments be diminished either, especially if he does break Marino's record.
