I'll keep updating the "blog" over at the other site for now, but figured we might as well throw this together since Joe created this forum...and I just know how much of a demand there is for DRays info.

Anyhoo, the Rays sent McClung and Orvella to AAA today giving a spot in the bullpen to Juan Salas (you'll remember him for his remarkable shutout streak in the minors last year).

Also the final roster spot is set to be determined tomorrow -- it'll be between Cantu and Gomes, and I think it's Gomes' spot to lose -- I'd put it at about 85/15 for now -- so if you have Jorge, he may not be doing you a lot of good rather soon. The winner of the spot will likely handle the majority of the DH duties until Joe Maddon realizes he has an infinitely better option on his bench in Elijah Dukes.

Who's gonna be the closer? Closer by committe?

Al Reyes to start, if I had to guess today.

So, is Al Reyes going to get first crack at closing? How much do you think Baldelli's injuries will affect his numbers? How is the top of the order shaking out? Does whoever bats behind Crawford work the count enough? How good is James Shields?

So, is Al Reyes going to get first crack at closing?
I think so, yes...although nothing has been announced.
How much do you think Baldelli's injuries will affect his numbers?
He'll start slow but should be in a good groove by May. Probably can snipe him at a buy-low price in late-April. I really think this will end up being his best year.
How is the top of the order shaking out?
Crawford-Zobrist-Rocco
Does whoever bats behind Crawford work the count enough?
That would be Ben Zobrist. He's nothing if not an OBP machine. Takes a lot of pitches, has a good eye, will be laying down a bunch of bunts.
How good is James Shields?
I think he has 15 win potential...in 2008. ERA will likely hover around 4-4.2 for most of his career. Potentially I think he projects out as a #3 pitcher for a playoff-caliber team.

I like the D-rays, although I don't consider myself all that knowledgeable about baseball.

Do you think BJ Upton will get a chance to contribute this year?

The word is that Upton may take over at 2B and move Cantu to the bench or AAA.

Why did they send Orvella down? :P
I asked about this at the other board. Was not met with much info. I don't completely understand it myself (I think he's the best reliever they've got), except to think that they want him to get more innings in while closing full time at AAA rather than being a setup man or committee member in the bigs right now. I expect (hope) he'll be back shortly if (when) the current crop of "closers" on the big club stumble and will take up the closer role himself from there on out. Then again it's the DRays - not a model player development organization. Crawford's making it despite them at this point I think - he's too good to screw up.

Not sure what you're looking for exactly. He was their best pitcher in AAA last year and the best in the spring. Still, the Rays couldn't find a spot for him. I'd speculate they want him to get more work in AAA, but he shredded that league last year. He could easily be the setup guy as they work him into pressure situations, but the reality is they probably don't think as much of him as you do.You want more info, go ask Joe Maddon. That's all I got.

This comment makes no sense. It's new ownership, new management, new scouts, new everything. Crawford came through the system three years before any of these guys were hired.

As flawed alluded to, he'll be chipping in at both 2B and CF this year. I think he'll be the opening day second baseman, but we'll have to see if his bat comes around and his defense continues to hold.

posted this at rotojewbus in March 2nd...updates in bold

quick thoughts on what I think the roster will be before the first spring game.

C) Navarro and Josh Paul -- Navarro has the potential to be a useful guy in OBP leagues. Somewhat 'touted' prospect from the Yankees camp a few years ago that has been moved around a few times, and now is the everyday guy here. Massive upgrade from Toby Hall, and like I said, a potential starter in obp leagues. Paul is nothing other than sludge who probably couldn't start in two catcher AL-only leagues. Doesn't even really handle pitchers all that well. In fact, he really does nothing well. Ladies and gentlemen, YOUR TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS!!

Riggins could take Paul's spot, and in fact should. Navarro has been hurt but should be the guy for most of the year.

1B) -- will be the most interesting battle of the spring. Cantu could be moved here, as his 2B defense is laughable, but it'll likely be a combo of Wigginton/Greg Norton/maybe even Johnny Gomes, with one of the others going to DH, and maybe Wiggs to third when Iwamura has a day off. All should be positively horrid defensively, but each carry a decent stick individually to where the team will get some offense out of the corner for the first time in a while. Wigginton was a nice mid-season filler for fantasy nerds in AVG leagues last year, but he too will drain your obp (you'll notice this becomes a theme througout this little piece). I think Gomes will actually bounce back nicely this year, with 25+ homers if healthy (and of course, in spring, who isn't). Norton is an ok bench guy for a real MLB team, but nothing useful in roto unless you're doing AL-only, and even then it better be your utility spot. I imagine he'll be moved this summer to a contender anyhoo.

Seems like Wigginton will be the main guy at 1B...Norton could also get some time there as well when Ty shifts over to 2B for a game or two, but I think Ty will be the guy there until somebody realizes his OBP is hovering in the .305 range.

2B) -- for the moment it's Cantu. Word around the campfire for a while was that it would be Iwamura and that Cantu would go to first, but that's not going to happen. Cantu is terrible defensively, can't take a walk, is slow and was hurt for the majority of last year.

Other than that, he's great.

Ok, he does have some pop in his bat and is young-ish still, but he has a ways to go to not only be a useful major-leaguer, but really even a useful roto guy, unless of course, you're in AVG leagues -- and if you are, why?

Cantu probably getting his Durham ticket punched tomorrow. Upton will be the guy here, as Maddon said today he'd feel comfortable with him starting at second. Brendan Harris will probably be the late-game defensive replacement, and Wiggington may get a start here every now and then with Norton going to first.

SS) -- All Ben Zobrist's spot for the time being. Was acquired in the Aubrey Huff deal from the 'Stros (while in AA) and was in the majors a few weeks later, despite having no pop in his bat and limited range. Ladies and gentlemen, YOUR TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS!!

He does project out to a useful OBP guy again, but likely a 3 hr, 48 rbi, 8 sb guy for the duration of his career. Think David Eckstein, but not quite as funny looking.

nothing has changed.

3B) -- all Iwamura for now. ToddZeileisGod has a great thread about him here that discusses him better than I ever could. The interesting thing will come when either Wes Bankston (well, he's probably going to first) and/or Joel Guzman are ready for the bigs, and most indications are that that day will be coming soon.

nothing has changed.

***SUPER UTILITY GUY*** -- BJ Upton. Possibly plays third, little short, maybe 2nd and all OF positions this year. Personally, I'm not buying it and I think he just flat-out outplays somebody this spring, but maybe this is what they'll do with him. But it's not like guys like Crawford, Rocco or Delmon will need a day off once a week, so if this is the route they take his ABs are going to in fact be limited -- and he's already a bit of a mental patient with the whole fielding mess and staying down in Durham too long thing. The Rays are really going out of their way to ##### this kid up, and it's getting annoying. I don't care if he has to DH, push Norton down a set of stairs and be done with it already. ### ####.

Anyways, with reliable PT I think he's a lock for 25-30 SBs and 15 or so homers. Good eye at the plate too, that didn't really show in his cup of with the big boys last year.

This has changed. BJ won't be going to third and short and RF, etc...only second and maybe the occasional CF start for the time being.

OF) -- Crawford, Rocco, Delmon. Not sure what to say here, other than they all are really, really good, really really fast and really really young. And I have no doubts the Rays will really, really ##### it up somehow. Not going to write up a big report on them tonight, everybody reading this knows how talented this trio is, but what amazes me is how CC continues to get better. He has a 25-30 homer season coming up soon.

Elijah Dukes almost has to make the roster as the 4th OF -- if not, the Durham Bulls have already told the Rays that he's not welcome back this year. That should tell you something. Ladies and gentlemen, you're...

Ok I'll cut that out.

Only thing that has changed here has been how good Dukes has been. As I've said numerous times I really do think he'll be the everyday DH by May.

As for that DH spot, it appears it will belong to Gomes to start, with Norton maybe getting a start there and at 1B a few times a week. Jonny showed enough pop this spring to hold his spot though, methinks.

**Brendan Harris will serve as the defensive replacement at 2B, SS, 3B, for those of you in insanely deep AL-only leagues. God help you.

Quick pitching thoughts before I run:

Kazmir -- positives coming out so far, but again, who cares. No negative news being reported a week in. The injury is a concern, but he has Cy Young-level stuff a few years down the road.

looks good.

James Shields -- nice solid, middle of the rotation guy. Could be a nice winner on a playoff-level team, and probably won't kill people with his ratios as he gains experience.

looks good.

Jae Sao -- can't believe this is the #3 guy in the rotation. Avoid.

Had a good spring, but he will suck. Believe it. Best case scenario here is he throws well for two months and the Rays are able to unload him to the Dodgers for a blue-chip prospect again.

Casey Fossum -- can't believe this is the #4 guy in the rotation. Slit your wrists if he ends up on your team.

ugh

Jason Hammel/JP Howell/Brian Stokes/Edwin Jackson -- one of these guys has to win the 5 spot. I like Hammel's potential, he throws hard. Jackson is out of options so he'll make the team as a middle relief guy at the least. Howell's fastball maxes out at 84 (no shtick) and his best pitch is a change up. A change up of an 84-mph fastball. gllllllll

Stokes is an average prospect guy, but Mitch Talbot and Jeff Niemann should both be in the rotation in 08, or this summer, taking the place of the might Sao/Fossum duo.

This ended up being Edwin Jackson. Most of you actually still reading this may remember him from his days as a highly touted Dodgers prospect, who outpitched Randy Johnson in a 1-0 thriller a few years back. Yea well anyways, he regressed just a tad. But, he had a very nice spring, cut the walks out and the Rays are going to give him another shot at stickin in the rotation. They can't keep jerking him between the rotation and the bullpen though, and Durham and the big club -- give him 15 starts and see whatcha got. Those 15 starts are being wasted on garbage like Fossum and Sao, so this kid deserves his as well.

JP Howell had a rather extraordinary spring and will be called up as soon as Fossum has his third straight 3 inning, 7 earned run performance.

McClung -- somehow the closer. Could be god-awful, or his fastball and curve may be good enough in short spurts. Juan Salas had an out of nowhere year down on the farm last year, but I'm not convinced it will translate. Really only a one-pitch guy, and that doesn't work up here. Corcoran is an ok middle relief/long-arm guy and Lugo, Micelli, Camp are all flotsam. I'd like to see Orvella grab that closer's job, but he has something upstairs kicking him around too.

Discussed earlier. McClung gone, probably for good. Probably Reyes' job to lose for now. Micelli mercifully cut yesterday.

Cantu to AAA, say hello to your new 2B, B.J. Upton :banned:

As for Riggins, he joined Cantu on the shuttle flight to Durham so Josh Paul remains #2 catcher

They have so much young potential in the field it is unbelievable, but besides Kazmir i don't see alot from the pitching aspect. I like that they are building from within, but they will eventually need to get a pitcher or two if they ever want to compete. Are there players that I am unaware of that would make this untrue and brighten the future pitching outlook?

Jeff Niemann is the prized guy -- 4th overall pick a few years ago, should be ready for the big club this summer.Mitch Talbot is also just about ready -- came over from the Astros in the Huff trade last summer and had a nice campaign in AA -- he'll probably spend most of the year in Durham before making the team next year out of spring.JP Howell almost made the team this year -- lost the rotation bid to Edwin Jackson, but many said he was the best looking arm in camp next to Kazmir -- he'll be the first guy up when Fossum or Sao begin to get bombed, or somebody gets hurt. JP had an excellent spring.Jason Hammel is also on the doorstep -- had a cup of coffee last year but didn't pitch well -- big fastball and huge curve -- could be a nice piece one day. With Kaz, Shields and Jackson already there, and those guys coming up -- the Rays SP is actually going to be a strong point very soon. A rotation of:KazmirNiemannTalbotShieldsHowell is pretty exciting. There's also a couple of other guys down lower (Wade Davis) that are supposedly excellent prospects. I don't get too excited though until I see them do it in AA.Knightro could probably expand more on this if he was so inclined.

I'll definitely chip in later..getting ready to draft.

Your names to watch here:

Wade Davis

Jacob McGee

Jeremy Hellickson

Matt Walker

Tampa Bay Rays = 2010 AL East Champs

Actually I don't see this as being that far-fetched. They are folowing the blueprint of how good teams are built and stay good. the Tigers of this past year are a prime example.

A bit of self-promotion, but to read up on what I have to say about the entire Rays farm system, as well as the top 15 prospects from every organization, go here to download my free thoughts

after watching Jamie Shields pitch today, mark him down for 12+ wins, 160 K's, and a sub 4 ERA.

Last year he lacked a good breaking ball, today, he was throwing a swing and miss breaker. He gave up 2 HRs today - 1 to Delgado on a 2 strike changeup that he left up too high and the other on a 2 strike breaker that again found too much of the plate to Valentin.

Mike Pelfrey on the other hand - oofa. No confidence in his breaking ball and he struggled to locate his fastball.

Stokes and Salas have both made the clubRays carrying 7 guys in the pen - all righties :(
Will we see them in the 7th, 8th, or 9th inning?
Seriously, nobody knows yet. Maddon said during the game today that they are going to let the players "define" their roles, sort of like how they did it last year. And hey, after all that success they had last year, why not try it again?I do think Salas will be the 8th inning guy leading into Reyes. But, it could easily eventually go the other way, although Salas has very little MLB pressure situation experience. I don't think Stokes has closer stuff -- always been a SP anyways. He'll be the 7th-inning guy if I had to guess.

:bag: Thanks for the insights, though.

GO Rays im excited!

Baseball sucks, fantasy baseball is ok, I hope I do good considering I know nothing about this crap sport :goodposting:

Seo is just keeping Niemann or Talbot's spot warm. He sucks but those guys just aren't completely ready yet.

I know, but they won't be up till June at least. :lmao:Hard to believe Madden is going to have Zobrist bunt every. single. time. that Crawford gets on this season. Jeebus Joe, get a clue.

I'll be paying attention to a lot of Rays games this year with Crawford and D Young on my fantasy team. Even though they have both been CS tonight, I love the fact that they're running. Might need to look at adding Dukes, but I can't have 3 Rays on my team, right?

Boatloads. I suspect he's the everyday DH and CF fill in for when they want Rocco DH'ing. Gomes better learn how to play first base.

If you're in a OBP league, I think Dukes is the guy you want anyways (over Young).

I saw Jesus Colome give up the longest HR I've ever witnessed live. He threw Jason Giambi a 98mph in his juicing prime and Giambi hit it up above the American Flag that hangs above CF in the Trop.

Al Reyes with the save tonight!

pretty bad if they can top the 2006 pen's ineptitude.
truth.I think Reyes has a chance to be pretty good for them. Been very solid last time he pitched (2005) and has a vet influence that the pen could use. Only problem is staying healthy, which he's never really been able to do.

If Reyes goes down, it's Orvella time again! BTW, the Durham pitchers had a no hitter into the 8th inning tonight.

I'd take the Durham Bulls over the Washington Nationals right now - Durham could win at least 50 games in MLB, something I don't see the Nationals doing.

 they definitely have better pitching.

Talk to me about Akinori Iwamura. I read Todd Zeile's post ( http://rotodugout.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=280 ) on him from the preseason, but he wasn't really on my radar until his multi-run game against the Yankees. I know that Duke is the D-Ray waiver pickup that everyone's excited about right now after his early home runs, but is it possible that Iwamura's the guy to watch instead?

From "Elias says..."

Elijah Dukes of the Devil Rays became the first player in major-league history to face the Yankees in each of his first two games and to hit home runs in both games.

Maybe, but Dukes is the guy you want, if you can. He's going to be the everyday DH/CF.Aki looks like he has a .300 BA potential, but not sure his walk rate will be ALL that great to start, and I'm guessing 15-18 homers. I think his power numbers will hinder his fantasy value some.
