2007 NBA DRAFT - ODEN and PORTLAND CRIPPLED (1 Viewer)

What does everyone think the Celtics record would be if they get Oden and end up with a lineup like?PG- RondoSG- WestSF- PiercePF- JeffersonC- OdenThe backcourt would be small with Rondo at 6-1 or 6-2 and West at 6-4 but both are very good defenders. Rondo is a pass first, electric PG would gets a great amount of steals and can rebound and is lightning quick. West can shoot and drive. And then a front court of Pierce, Jefferson and Oden is scary.
Terrific frontcourt, very weak backcourt. I don't think either Rondo or West are starting-caliber players on a good team. Decent backups but I wouldn't want them as starters on a contending team.

They'd still be worse then Detroit, Cleveland, Chicago, Toronto, and probably Washington. Jersey is likely better as well. So, no better then 6th in the conference with that crew. No better then 9th with Doc as coach.
True about Doc... Took him almost the whole year to realize he should be starting Rondo over Telfair. He is a horrible in game coach when it deals with substitutions, he uses like a 9 player rotation which never allows players like Allen and Rondo to fully get into a groove when they come in... Both showed flashes of brilliance when they finally got to start... Unfortunately Allen blew out his knee.

I wonder if I can get the language filter to ##### out anytime someone says something like "Oden is a younger Bill Russell." THat is probably the most ridiculous thing a person can say about Oden.

So? Next year, OJ Mayo will be the next Kobe Bryant and the year after that, some 11th grader from Mobile will be the next Kevin Garnett and so on and so forth.Would you like me to post similar articles calling Harold Minor the next Michael Jordan or Darko the next Dirk, among other examples?

Oden is a phenomenal player, no doubt. He will immediately improve the rebounding and defense of whatever team he joins. His locker room presence will likely be a positive. There shouldn't be much worry about his off-court behavior. He clearly has some serious offensive talent, even if it wasn't on display much this season.

Let's just quit comparing him to the best center ever before we know what jersey he's going to be in...
Sure, find me the articles calling Harold Minor "the next Michael Jordan". His nickname was "Baby Jordan" that does not mean people thought he was the next Michael. Probably some kid on blacktop called him that and it was catchy and stuck.Don't provide links to articles saying Harold Minor never became the next Jordan, or articles that say he had been compared, find ones that actually favorably compare him to Jordan coming out of college. I don't think you will find them. He lasted until the middle of the first round - if anyone thought he was anything more than Shawn Respert, he would have gone top 2 or 3. He was saddled with a nickname (which of course he embraced - it probably earned him some cash), but as I recall there were never truly comparisons.
Better example would have been Penny Hardaway actually. Interesting that you don't seem to disagree with the point: sensationalizing picks happens every season. While it might be fun, and gives fans hope, it ultimately is a silly science. Felipe Lopez was on the cover of Sports Illustrated and in the story was the line, "if there hadn't been a Jordan first, there would be a Lopez" or something to that degree. Pure ridiculousness. I like Oden a lot. I think at worst you get Alonzo Mourning and at best you get Hakeem. But those achievements - which are WELL worth the #1 pick - are a long way off from Bill Russell.

I fully expected that response. Jay Mariotti gets paid to espouse his opinion on sports. What do you do?
#4 makes a valid point here, superhero.

Stephen A. You just made your point far better than your initial post. I can agree with most of it - however, you don't seem to want to leave room for comparisons. To whom WOULD you compare Oden? Olajuwon? Artis Gilmore? If I am drafting Greg Jennings, I want to know - is he providing a weapon more like Isaac Bruce or Tory Holt, James Lofton or Andre Reed? Oden is a team leader, quiet by nature, defense-first with a raw offensive game. Incredible feet and instincts along with very long arms. Does that sound like Andrew Bogut? No. That's why there were no comparisons of Bogut to Russell.

Not as familiar with Gilmore. Right now, Oden reminds me of Mourning. Very good defender and rebounder, limited but effective offensive game. I don't think he has near the footwork or quickness of Hakeem. That said, his injury murks the waters. I'll say: Upside - David Robinson w/ better defense. Downside: Mutombo (plenty of D, marginal offense).

 Mariotti has a column in the Sun-Times every day.

It's funny that I read Mariotti every day ? He gives great entertainment everyday with his wishy-washy opinions, and it is funny that you use him as a source to strengthen your argument.

I don't think he has the quickness of a Robinson, nor does he have the hands. I think Mourning is a very good comparison. Mourning with size is a great player. Mourning with size and moves is a killer. Mourning averaged a double-double until the injuries/health took away his game.

Just because you don't like him, you call him less than credible. How do you suppose he has maintained his position at the Sun Times, added work with ESPN on both Around the Horn and PTI, and won numerous awards if he is not credible. I am sure you will say that being a "lightening rod" is not the same as being credible, but if a journalist lacks credibility, he will also lose respect, sources, readers, listeners and his job. He doesn't have your respect, but you help pay his salary either through online or newspaper purchases. On behalf of Jay, I thank you.....and ask you to keep posting. You are a funny guy.

First off, he's a columnist and I never said he wasn't good at his job. He's controversial, and is a good writer, but he's a windbag. Just the fact that I, and many others, get upset reading his columns is the very reason he's the SunTimes' featured columnist. He's not there enlightening us as his opinions tend to change by the week. I'm sure if Oden gets off to a slow start, he'll be accusing him of being the biggest bust in recent NBA History.

This has to be a fake post.

Oden is the best big man prospect since Shaq. Better than Duncan, better than Zo, ect.

He may be the best big prospect ever. Shaq carried more weight, but Oden's got better foot work, coordination, and appears to have a hunger/love of the game that Shaq never had.

I think he'll be an All Star in the East next year (if he doesn't go to Memphis) and he'll win a 4-5 titles. I'm completely sold.

Alonzo averaged 13 and 7 his freshman year. Oden, with one good hand, averaged 16.5 and 9.5.

god i hope not.i'd love for them to make a play for jermaine oneal.

Vince Carter would be a horrible fit for the Lakers, they don't need another gunner, and Vince is much more limited than Kobe in other aspects of the game.

Jermaine O'Neal would be perfect, but they'd have to give up quite a bit.

Lakers need an inside presence....Carter would need the ball too much too blend with Bryant.

This was a small joke. I would not expect Carter to be at all attractive to the Lakers. Bagger meant Oden, but said Odom.

i'm pretty sure that every year the top pick in every sport is hyped as "the best since X". lots of guys don't live up to be anywhere near that. they've gotta hype the show to generate interest. :goodposting:they want us to believe that the #1 pick is going to be the best player of his generation... it's lame.

Shaq was all hype too before he was drafted. Same with Duncan, Yao, Kwame Brown and Micheal Olowakandi. Right now he is getting hyped as being a better prospect than all of those guys.

Brandon Jennings gave a verbal to UofA today, so I'm ready to see someone else's basketball team (pro or college) get kicked in the nads.

:lmao:
