Houston Texans Pre-season and Training Camp Thread (1 Viewer)

Not a real surprise, but Charles Spencer out for at least the first six weeks. All the Ephraim Salaam and Jordan Black that Matt Schaub can (or can't) handle.

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4998470.html

When the Texans hit the field on Friday for their first practice, left tackle Charles Spencer will not be allowed to join his teammates.

The Texans are placing Spencer on the Physically Unable to Perform list, meaning he will miss at least the first six games of the season.

The announcement deals a blow to the team's plans at offensive line. The Texans now enter camp with Ephraim Salaam as their starter at left tackle. Free agent Jordan Black will compete with Salaam for the starting job.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak said a recent arthroscopic procedure on Spencer's knee, which he injured in Week 2 of last season, led to the decision. Team doctors told Spencer he was healing well but needed more time for rehabilitation.

Kubiak said the decision should help Spencer get back on the field this year. While players can come off the PUP list during training camp, the Texans aren't looking at that as a possibility for Spencer. Players who are on the PUP list by the final roster cutdown on Sept. 1 must stay on the list for at least six weeks of the regular season.

The Texans, who had a similar situation with former linebacker Kailee Wong last year.

Also Wednesday, offensive lineman Enoka Lucas was claimed off waivers by Tampa Bay. The Texans had signed Lucas as an undrafted free agent out of Oregon in May, but they released him on Monday.

Tough blow there, but at least it seems like he'll make it back to the field. I don't think that was a given once they knew the nature and extent of the injury. He wasn't as dominant as Marcus McNeill, but like McNeill, it seemed like Spencer was going to be the Texans LT (and a good one) for a long long time...

Anxious to see how the RB situation plays out behind Green. They've expressed confidence in Dayne, but they've also got Taylor (the most intriguing of the bunch IMO), Lundy, and Gado. Would Dayne even be active most weeks if Green's healthy? I'm not convinced he'd be the most effective option in a change of pace role and he's no help on special teams, so it'll be interesting to see how it plays out. Lundy can help out on special teams so that helps his case, not sure about Taylor and Gado (although Gado seemed pretty ineffective last season). I like Taylor for the #2 spot provided he hangs onto the rock, but that's just a hunch. He's got ideal size and seems to have more burst than the others...

I get the sense that Kubiak likes Dayne more than the average fan. If Dayne is inactive, I believe that it would be a special teams issue as you stated. IMO, a Green injury would put Ronnie in a rushing attack that looks like last years.

Okoye signs so all player will start camp

profootballtalk has some guesses regarding the finances

OKOYE SIGNS -- GINN NEXT?

Several media types are reporting that the Texans have reached an agreement with defensive tackle Amobi Okoye, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2007 NFL draft.

Adam Caplan of Scout.com reports that the six-year deal, which is voidable to five based on playing-time triggers, has $12.785 million in guarantees, representing a 12.6% increase from last year's No. 10 selection, with a total maximum value (with incentives and/or escalators) of $17.6 million.

Adam Schefer of NFL Network reports that the base package of the deal is $15.4 million.

Training Camp Day 1 report

http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=3429

First practice: The players reported to the first practice of training camp Friday morning with helmets on but no pads under their jerseys and shorts. The focus was on technique, with a variety of 1-on-1 pass rushing drills for the defense and passing skeleton and 7-on-7 drills for the offense.

Happy to be back on the field again, the players were positive after practice.

“I feel good,” cornerback Dunta Robinson said. “It’s kind of like when you go into a game and you’ve got to get that first hit to get the butterflies out of your system. It’s kind of the same way. You come in, you get that first practice out of the way and you feel a lot better after that.”

Quarterback Matt Schaub was pleased with the effort and attitude of his teammates.

“We’re going to be a hard-working football team,” Schaub said. “You come out the first day and guys are competing and working hard. They’re not going through the motions trying to test the waters, they’re just jumping in and getting after it.”

With the outdoor practice field wet due to rain, the morning practice was held inside the Methodist Training Center.

“We would have loved to have been outside, but the weather of course has been an issue,” head coach Gary Kubiak said. “But we’re bouncing around good, so we’re just excited to get going.”

Signed, sealed and delivered: The top story Friday morning was the signing of defensive tackle Amobi Okoye, the Texans’ first-round choice out of Louisville and the team’s final 2007 draft pick to sign. The move ensured that all Texans draft picks reported to camp in time for the first practice for the second consecutive season under general manager Rick Smith.

“There was an amazing amount of work that Rick (Smith) and them have had to do over the last 24 hours to get that done,” Kubiak said. “Really, it’s a credit to the kid, too. To be able to get up this morning and get all these things signed that we need to get signed for him to get out here. We’re just glad to have everybody.”

“It was very important to me,” Okoye said of signing before camp. “I’m a team player and I wanted to be with my teammates and gel and get started from day one.”

Relieved to have his contract taken care of, Okoye hopes to contribute to the team as soon as possible.

“It was all business out here today,” he said of practice. “I was ready to come out here and go straight to work. We came out here focused on getting better. I’m just kind of trying to stay calm and relaxed – take it one day at a time, actually one practice at a time, one minute at a time. And just get better.”

McCardell’s homecoming: The other big news today was the arrival of free agent wide receiver Keenan McCardell, who signed with the Texans this morning after playing with the San Diego Chargers the past three seasons. A Houston native, McCardell will be entering his 16th NFL season and adds tremendous experience and skill to a young receiving corps.

“I always tell guys that you never stop learning,” he said. “The day you stop learning in this game is the day you need to get out of it. You always can learn something and I hope to help Andre (Johnson) any way I can. All of the young guys, they can ask me anything. Even the coaches can come up and ask me things.”

McCardell arrived a little late this morning and hasn’t yet had a chance to dissect the playbook. But he knew the importance of being at practice today and for the entirety of camp.

“If I’m going to come in here and contribute, I have to win over the 63 guys in that locker room,” he said. “This is when you win them over is right here, when they see you in the trenches with them and doing the things you are supposed to be doing with them. That’s when you gain their trust.”

He won’t have to worry about winning the respect of his new head coach, who already holds McCardell in high esteem.

“I know what he stands for as a person, and the success that he’s had as a player in this league,” Kubiak said. “We have to fit him in with our football team. He’ll get in there and compete with everybody else, and we’ll see how it works out.”

Andre Johnson and…?: McCardell may ultimately crack the starting lineup as the wide receiver opposite Andre Johnson. But for now, Kevin Walter seems to have a leg up on the competition. Walter saw plenty of action as the second wide receiver this morning, consistently lining up with the first-team offense in the 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills.

But with speedsters Jacoby Jones, Jerome Mathis and Bethel Johnson all in the mix, the battle for the second starting wide receiver spot should be hard-fought all camp.

“It makes you feel good about going out there and really competing when you have every guy out here really wanting it,” Bethel Johnson said. “It makes you feel good, makes you want to go out there and really compete and want it just as bad as they do.”

Andre Johnson will be watching the competition with interest to see who develops into his running mate.

“I think we have a great group of guys – probably the best group we’ve had since I’ve been here,” he said. “The competition is there.”

Schaub’s first day: Opening training camp as his team’s starter for the first time in his pro career, Schaub started practice well. But he had some rhythm and communication issues with his teammates during the full team 11-on-11 drills.

“We were pretty sloppy,” Kubiak said of the 11-on-11 drills. “We put the ball on the ground a couple times, but we’re here to have a good month and get ready to play. We have to come back this afternoon and be better.”

“It definitely frustrates you,” Schaub said. “We had a great practice up until that point and then had a few mishaps. But that’s part of football – the ups and the downs and you just handle them, you learn from them and get better and keep going.”

Schaub doesn’t think it will take long for him and his teammates to get back on the same page as they were during OTA’s and the mini-camp.

“It’s just a matter of during the team game when it was 11-on-11, getting that timing down, the rhythm with the defenders in their face and everything,” he said. “We’ll get that down as quickly as possible in the next couple days.”

Strongside linebacker competition: Shantee Orr sits atop the depth chart, but backup Charlie Anderson also saw extensive playing time last season. Kubiak noted that with the addition of veteran free agents Danny Clark and Shawn Barber, he expects a lot of competition at the strongside linebacker position.

“To me, we’ve got a heck of a competition going on to see who’s going be those final three guys,” Kubiak said of the linebackers. “We’re going to rotate them all. They’re all going to work. They all have a lot of athletic things that they do – Shantee made a great play out there this morning (a leaping interception). We’re just going to let them compete.”

I was hoping to hear more about Owen Daniels....no word yet it seems
He is the starting TE who will be used in a similiar manner. Whatever shoulder problems from late last year are healed. Any "news" on him would probably be nothing you would want to see.

Taylor lost: Chris Taylor received unfortunate news today as the second-year running discovered he would miss the season with a torn meniscus in his left knee, according to general manager Rick Smith. Surgery will be performed tomorrow to “suture the tear,” but in the interim the team will look to add another running back to the camp squad.

Darius Walker, a Texans undrafted free agent that was cut on July 23, was mentioned by Smith as a possible replacement, as well as former Oklahoma running back Quentin Griffin, who participated most recently with the Hamburg Sea Devils in NFL Europa.

Daniels looked very good today. I thought he had the 2nd best day behind Andre. He and Bruener were alternating with the 1st string, but then Bruener is likely to be in on running plays anyway. Though Daniels had one run blocking play that stood out, shifting back to fullback and sealing the edge on a nice sweep. Hopefully he can keep the good blocking up.

More on the Texans RB situation from the Chronicle

Backfield help wantedChris Taylor's knee injury and Wali Lundy's sore back are forcing the Texans to bring in some backs for tryouts, including veterans Quentin Griffin and Patrick Pass. Taylor, who rushed for 99 yards in the last game of last season, is undergoing surgery today and could be lost for the season."We were excited to see Chris this season," general manager Rick Smith said. "It's an unfortunate situation, but we know he'll work hard to come back and have a productive career."Griffin, who grew up in Houston and played at Aldine Nimitz before going to Oklahoma, played three seasons at Denver when Smith was in the Broncos' personnel department and Gary Kubiak was an assistant coach."Quentin's a good guy and a hard worker," Smith said. "We're familiar with him, so we know what we're getting."Pass earned three Super Bowl rings during seven seasons with New England. He played in only three games with the Patriots last season.Darius Walker, rookie running back from Notre Dame, also may fit into the picture. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Texans but was waived before camp began.Frye injures ankleTexans rookie offensive tackle Brandon Frye rolled his ankle in the morning practice and was on crutches and wearing an immobilizer throughout the evening practice. He is only expected to miss a couple of days. The running backs have taken the brunt of the early injuries. Aside from Chris Taylor undergoing knee surgery today, Gary Kubiak said Ahman Green is "nicked up" and Wali Lundy's back locked up Saturday night. Some rests for the vets

I like Taylor for the #2 spot provided he hangs onto the rock, but that's just a hunch. He's got ideal size and seems to have more burst than the others...

Kubiak on Kevin Walter and the number 2 WR position

http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=3446

on whether wide receiver Kevin Walter is the second-string wide receiver on the Texans) “No doubt, Kevin has won that job throughout the offseason, and he’s continued to do that each day right here. When I look at our group though, I will say this: We know we’ve got a Pro Bowl player in Andre (Johnson), and a very proven player. After that, to me, it’s competitive all the way across the board. Kevin’s got a job that he’s got to fight to hang on to, and everybody’s trying to get to him and get on the field. But the most important thing is that we have a good group of receivers. Not one, not two, but we gotta have a good group, and we’re headed in that direction right now.”
McCardell hamsting trouble??
(on whether Texans wide reciever Keenan McCardell tweaked his hamstring) “I really don’t know. I haven’t talked to (team trainer) Kevin (Bastin) about Keenan, but I know David Anderson did tweak a hamstring. We’re tired right now, and everybody’s got a few nicks, so it’s things we’re going to have to fight through. We have some nicks at wide receiver right now, but the great thing about that, we got some young kids that are battling for opportunities on this team, so we’re going to take a hard look at them.”
Mathis
on wide receiver Jerome Mathis) “I think he’s gotten better. His first day, he looked really good. He’s bogged down a little bit for a couple of days in there as he got in a routine. Let’s face it, this is as long as Jerome has been on the field with us over a period of time, and that’s a positive. I think at the last play in practice just now, Sherm (offensive coordinator Mike Sherman) called ‘Double Go,’ our whole team is tired, and I watched him run his route specifically. He gave them a chance over there to win at the end of a practice, so I think Jerome is heading in the right direction, and his conditioning level is much better than it has been in the past.”

Except that when he played last season Dayne has been quite good ( Look at the numbers ) i personally think he would be a better option then Green as a starter .I think Green does nt make it trough training camp and Dayne comes up the starter and has a good year .

Green is such a redraft bargain its ridiculous ...

Unless you mean you're predicting an injury, I don't think there's any doubt Green makes the team. And I think odds are he'll be in the mix as a starter. It's possible that one of the other RB will just light it up in preseason and win the job, but I don't think that's likely. If he doesn't produce in the season is when we could see a change.

from houstontexans.com (kubiak speaking)

on the injury to Texans guard Chester Pitts) “I didn’t see it. Just talking to Kevin (Bastin), he had some back spasms, so they’ll take him in and take a look. That’s all I have on him right now. I didn’t see what happened, but Kevin told me he had some bad back spasms.”(on who would replace Texans guard Chester Pitts at left guard if Pitts were injured) “We’ll see. We either move Drew (Hodgdon) over there, or we go with (Mike) Brisiel or (Kasey) Studdard; one of those three, so we’ll see what happens, I don’t really know what’s up with Chester right now.”(on how valuable Texans center Drew Hodgdon is) “I think the fact that we settled down and played him one spot gives him a chance to be a better pro football player. It’s just the way that I and Sherman and John Benton feel, so I think he’s been more consistent in camp. If Chester (Pitts) is going to be out a little period of time, then gives him an excellent opportunity.”(on how it feels to potentially lose a starter like Pitts) “It’s very difficult. I’ve been doing this for a long time, and you’re going to have players get nicked up and things happen. That gives other guys an opportunity. You don’t want to lose players as a coach, but I know one thing: you’ve got to work to get better. Usually with the hard work, some things happen that you’ve got to fight through. We’ll fight through this one and let’s see what happens; maybe he’ll be back this afternoon, who knows? That’s part of the game, and you got to keep working.”(on what he likes in Texans guard Kasey Studdard) “I like his tenacity. I like the effort that he plays with. You’re going to get the same thing every down. The thing he’s got to do is clean up mentally as a player, understanding what he’s doing. I think when he does that, he’ll play a long, long time in this league at that spot.”

Chester pitts update

http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=3468

(on injured Texans guard Chester Pitts) “The news is good. Of course you’re concerned of what happened, and you’re hoping for the best and waiting. Bottom line is Chester sprained his lower back, and that’s probably about the best news we could get. We feel he’s going to be fine, he’s day to day. Listening to Kevin (Bastin), we’re probably talking about a week hopefully, but we’re going to get Chester ready to play, and do what’s right for him, but it’s going to be a day-to-day situation. I’ll let you know, he’s doing much better. He was up and walking around yesterday and in the meetings last night, he was his normal self. We were fortunate there, very fortunate

Injury notes from Preson Game 1 from chron.com

Injury updateStrong safety Glenn Earl left early in the first quarter with a left foot injury that likely will force him to miss at least a month of regular-season games. It's an injury similar to the one suffered by Demarcus Faggins last season. Linebacker Shawn Barber suffered a shoulder strain. Defensive back Jason Horton fractured a bone near his elbow and will likely miss significant time.Three Texans did not dress because of injuries: guard Chester Pitts (back), wide receiver Keenan McCardell (quadriceps) and defensive end Anthony Weaver (shoulder).

Earl out for the year...from Houstontexans.com

QUOTE

opening statement) “I’ll talk about the injuries first. The ones that are most significant of course: (strong safety) Glenn (Earl). He does have the Lisfranc injury. He’ll have surgery on Tuesday. The recovery on this is nine to 12 months, so Glenn’s season is done. He will go on injured reserve. Glenn was having a fine camp and he’s a big part of this football team, so that’s a big blow to this football team. He definitely will be out for the season.

QUOTE

(on if free safety C.C. Brown is going to move into strong safety Glenn Earl’s spot) “Yep, probably so. Yeah, that is what we will do. We will move him down and work Von Hutchins and Jason Simmons at the free safety. Dexter McCleon will become a bigger part of that package until we find out who is going to be his replacement, and we will continue to get those two young kids ready to play. I think they have got a ways to go. (General manager) Rick Smith is looking at a lot of availability out there from the stand point of safety and corner. We are going to have to find a couple football players, and not just bodies, we have to find some guys to come in here and compete. So we are going to have to take a hard look at some guys here in the next 24 hours.”

(on what Brown had done in camp) “Brown has played well – he is just a quiet and accountable guy. He has had a good camp. Last night, he was solid. He will miss Glenn Earl – those two guys have played so much football together. So he is going to learn to have to go back there and work with another guy and talk with another guy, so that’s probably going to be the biggest adjustment. We are losing a good football player. Earl had really stepped his play up and I thought he was on his way to having a fine year. It is just an unfortunate situation, when he stepped up to make that tackle there in the first quarter and his foot got bent back. That is just not a very fortunate deal.”

(on what he likes about safety Von Hutchins so far, from camp and OTA’s) “Well, he is a very smart player. (Defensive backs coach) Jon Hoke and (defensive coordinator) Richard Smith can do a lot of things with him. He can handle a lot of information. He is the guy that when your on the field if the team goes to three wide receivers on you, you can still feel comfortable keeping your base defense on the field so you can cover from the safety position. So, I think his versatility and knowledge of the game can give him an excellent chance to get on the field a lot this year.

Watching Saturday's game againsy the Bears I wasn't that impressed with anyone on offense. A.Green didn't get enough work to draw a conclussion in my mind. I thought Schaub did ok, Lundy & Gado looked blah. Jacoby Jones was target quite often, probably around 8 times. He ended with 4 catches & dropped another two. The kid is raw but there's a lot of potential there.

Wow..that's been up for a couple of weeks now and nobody caught that, but That's a writing/editting issue from Houstontexans.com, not a hair that needs to be split. Kubiak has consistently referred to Walter as the man to beat for the number 2 slot.

From the Mon, August 13 Gary Kubiak radio show, currently going on at http://cbsplayer.streamtheworld.com/index....CALLSIGN=KILTAM

Jason Simmons might have the edge on the free safety position.

McKinney vs Flanaghan at center is a close battle right now.

Said that last year he wasn't familiar with a lot of the players and worked them harder in camp. Now that he has some experience with them, he's not working some of the older guys as hard in camp to try to keep them fresh/healthy for the season. Mentioned guys like McKinney, Flanaghan, and ND Kalu.

He expects Chester Pitts back for the Dallas preseason game, and said he won't even be surprised if Chester is pushing to play by the end of this week.

McCardell practiced today. He was slated to only do individual work, but instead he practiced the full practice.

Talked about Zach Dials looking very good, a player they got late in the draft because he pulled up with a hammy or something in the 40 at the combine.

Said Danny Clark is the guy pushing Charlie Anderson for the starting role, and mentioned Orr got back on the field Saturday.

For the upcoming game, expecting to play the starters with a play count of 30-35 plays, however long that takes, so they can see the players conditioning and such.

That's all.

SIMMONS ELEVATED TO STARTER'S ROLE

Jason Simmons, an original Texan who has been a valuable backup at safety and cornerback during his career, was working with the first-team defense Monday.

``Jason played extremely well against the Bears,'' coach Gary Kubiak said. ``He deserves an opportunity to step up and play that spot right now. Everybody moves up a notch and will get a lot more playing time.''

Simmons, 5-9, 204, is playing in his 10th season. At 31, he's getting a long-awaited opportunity.

``Jason's a pro,'' Kubiak said. ``He's a small guy, but he's played corner and safety. He's very smart, and he was very impressive when he played against the Bears. He deserves a chance to play. This is a big opportunity for him. You could tell just by looking at him in the meeting today. He sees that opportunity to step up and be a starter again, so we'll see how it goes.''

Former cornerback Von Hutchins, who was moved to free safety in the offseason and intercepted a pass against the Bears, will push Simmons for the starting job. Both will play extensively.

``Von did some good stuff,'' Kubiak said. ``His reps are going to pick up.'' The coaches want to see more of rookie Brandon Harrison, a fifth-round pick who suffered a sore shoulder against Chicago.

``He's a little ways back right now,'' Kubiak said about Harrison missed the offseason program and minicamp. ``He did some good things in the game. He's behind with our defense just repetition-wise. He's going to get a lot more reps.''

THREE FORMER NO. 1 PICKS COMING FOR TRYOUTS

Usually, if a player is available at this time of year, it's a long shot that he's going to be able to help your team.

But Texans general manager Rick Smith has a knack for finding players who fit into coach Gary Kubiak's offensive and defensive systems. So when he brings in veteran defensive backs like Derrick Gibson, Shaun Williams, Tyrone Poole and Raymond Walls for tryouts, you have to take notice.

All but Walls were first-round draft choices.

``We're bringing in players we think are legitimate options for our club,'' Smith said.

Losing safety Glenn Earl to a season-ending foot injury leaves a void at safety. Veteran Jason Simmons was working with the first team Monday. Von Hutchins, the former cornerback, was working with the second team.

C.C. Brown was moved from free safety to strong safety, his natural position. ``We're going to see how they do in practice and the rest of our preseason games, and we're going to play the two best,'' coach Gary Kubiak said.

Cornerback Jason Horton also suffered a season-ending injury. Rookie safety Brandon Harrison has a sore shoulder.

``We're not bringing in guys to just work out,'' Smith said. ``I want guys who would legitimately come in and help our team.

``Any time you lose a starter (Earl), it's a significant deal. We've said all along that we feel good about the depth on this team. We certainly feel good about Jason and what he's capable of doing and Von showing that he's taken to his position.''

Update: Simmons at SS, Brown at FS..from houstontexans.com

(on whether he decided to keep C.C. Brown at the free safety position) “That’s what we did. We left him there, and we just moved Jason (Simmons) up and we’re going to give Jason the opportunity. Jason played well the other night, so that’s the way we’re going to work, but we are also going to move around a little bit. (There has been) a little experimentation, but I think Jason deserves the opportunity to start, so we’ll see.” (on the safety position) “We left C.C. (Brown) alone, and then Jason (Simmons) just stepped up and is starting. That’s the way we’re operating right now. You may see us do some different things on the practice field, but when we start this game this week, Jason is replacing Glenn Earl

Kubiak on Jacony Jones

on if there is a number two receiver) “Yes, Kevin (Walter) is our two. I think number 12 (Jacoby Jones) is two-and-a-half. He’s been playing pretty dang good. We’re going to get him on the field somehow, some way. When we play three wides, he’s the first one going out there. Those three guys, I think, are rock solid right now and then we’ll continue to work those other ones and see what happens.”

A note from Kubiak's press confernece...He is not sounding optimistic about Spencer playing in 2007, but does think he will play again. As soon as the transcript is up I will post more specific links.

(on the progress of Spencer) “I think’s been very good. Since they went in and did the scope, he’s probably made as much progress as he’s made throughout the process. I think it’s still a reach to say that he’s going to play for us this year, but we’ll see. He’s come a long way. We’ll know here within the next month. He’s going to have to make a great deal of progress for us to count on him playing. But, as far as will he play again, will he make it back, will he be a factor in this organization, I don’t have any doubt that he will. But I think it’s still going to be a tough go this year.”
General OL notes
(on if he is happy with tackles Ephraim Salaam and Jordan Black) “I think Ephraim has done a good job for us. He’s solid. Jordan Black was brought in here to push Ephraim, to make us better, and I think he’s done that. I know what we’re going to get from Ephraim from an effort standpoint and preparation standpoint; it’s a matter of him staying healthy for the long haul. We have to be smart with him as coaches, and I think having Jordan here gives us a comfort zone that if Ephraim gets banged up, that we have a veteran guy that go in there and play.”

(on if he’s made a decision at center) “No, I have not yet. We’ll make a decision on (center) Steve (McKinney). There are three situations that I’ll let you guys know, probably Tuesday or Wednesday. That’s regarding McKinney, regarding the SAM linebacker position between (linebackers) Charlie (Anderson) and Danny Clark, and also the last one with (defensive tackle) Travis Johnson, between Travis and (defensive tackle) Anthony Maddox. I’ll let you guys know about that Tuesday or Wednesday.”
Also, cuts annnounced
on roster moves made today) “We released eight players this afternoon. I’ve sat down with all of these guys, except for one: (defensive tackle) Thomas Johnson, (quarterback) Quinton Porter, (quarterback) Bradlee Van Pelt, (wide receiver) Harry Williams, (defensive tackle) Thomas Smith, (wide receiver) Charlie Adams, (cornerback) Derrick Roberson and (tight end) Ben Steele. I’ve visited with every one of these kids. I haven’t visited with Thomas Johnson yet and I’ll probably be visiting with him briefly after we get through. We released eight. We still have a couple moves we have to make and we’re going to hold off until Tuesday to make those moves. We need to release two more or release one and make a move, which could involve tackle Charles Spencer here in the next couple days. That’s where we are right now.”

Adios Keenan, I think it's time to hang 'em up. Thanks for the good years in SD!

ETA: Think Zabransky makes it to the practice squad?

Ouch, sounds like they are contemplating IR'ing Spencer.

sorry if this has been posted elsewhere, but the Seahawks just sent Michael Boulware to the Texans for Jason Babin....

Just what I was about to post. Any homers have insight on Babin?Boulware had a great rookie season and then devolved quickly to a liability in the passing game as he bit on play fakes and got burned deep often.
Wow, Boulware sounds alot like Brown and Earl. We already have better against the run than pass thing at that position. Babin has never lived to his first round draft position. He has multiple pass rush moves, but does not have the pure athletic ability to set those moves up. Does not come off as lazy and plays special teams.

Didn't say he was good against the run, just that he bit hard. Chester Taylor's 95 yard TD run was busted behind the line of scrimmage by Tubbs and Boulware missed an easy tackle, and he took a horrible angle in the SB allowing Parker to turn what should've been a 3 yard gain into a 75 yard TD. He had a really, really good rookie year being converted from linebacker to safety with I think 4 game saving INTs. Sounds like two guys with skills but haven't reached their potential. babin would join a rotation of ends in Seattle (which Holmgren likes to do to keep them fresh). Maybe working with vets like Kerney and Fisher will be good for Babin.

Babin was a Charley Casserly special--traded a bunch of mid-round picks (that we needed) to a division rival (Tennessee) to move up unto the late 1st and get this guy. Then they tried to make him an OLB pass rusher in a 3-4. He's looked better to me since they made him a 4-3 end, I though he had a good camp and saw him put some heat on QBs at times. IMO he's basically a rotational pass-rusher DE type. Shantee Orr looks a little better at it to me, and he's cheaper as well. So is Charlie Anderson. Orr has been coming in at RDE with Mario Williams sliding over to LDE in certain packages, so I think that made Babin expendable. I know Boulware fell out of favor last season in Seattle (didn't they use Babineaux in his spot?) and isn't needed now with the additions of Grant, Russell, and Green coming back from injury. Seems like a numbers game where each guy's going to go to a better situation for himself, and a logical trade for both sides, although I'm not that familiar with Seattle's DE situation....

I like the move Boulware could really be a steal for us. Since the move Babin has looked as though his body is not accepting the weight gain. And even when he was trim he was always a step slow to the QB.
