RB Mike Hart, Michigan (1 Viewer)

dirtyhalos

capital letter hater!
John Powderly (Construxboy) has been kind enough to share his findings with draftguys.com on some of the top RBs eligible for the 2008 NFL Draft Class......

This week he breaks down RB Mike Hart, Michigan

 enjoy!!!

He'll suck in the NFL...Great college player, but not an NFL guy. Not fast, always hurt, runs like he has a load in his pants.

Mediocre talent. Speed/quickness/wiggle are lacking.

That being said, if he finds a nice home he could have a Travis Henry type career at best.

Sorry, he'll never even achieve that level...change of pace back at best. He'll be drafted pure and simply because he's a Michigan RB. He'll do little to nothing in the NFL.

I don't think he is an elite talent or anything, but there have been lesser talents who have been solid NFL RBs. If he lands on a team with a zone blocking scheme, he could be decent.

As for the toughness issues, this kid is tough as nails.

Hart is a great college player, but he will never be a feature NFL RB.

Although he does seem to have a knack for getting the 4-5-6 yards runs in heavy traffic.

Chance of pace? From what? A quality back with speed? The only thing Hart has going for him is that he doesn't fumble. I can see him as a short yardage type back.

Now that you mention it, he does remind me of Najeh Davenport.

Nothing to do with his 5,500 rushing/receiving yards?
correct.

I definitely see him in the Chris Perry mold.

As a Texans fan I would love to have a guy like Hart as the second part of a RBBC/COP back. I dont know alot about him or seen alot of plays by him but in the interviews and his presence/ways he carries himself i love it. He seems like a natural leader that alot of team would be lucky to have around. I wouldn't want to be the one that has to bet against this guy.

Exactly why I think he'll stick in the NFL for awhile as a COP/Short yardage back. Unlikely to ever be a consistent fantasy starter, but I could see him doing some of those "dirty work" things that help a team win.

Agreed, there will always be a place in the NFL for an RB who has good vision, moves the pile, blocks well and doesn't fumble. What Hart lacks in speed and size he makes up for in intangibles at the College level. We will see if it translates to the NFL level or not. I wouldn't count him out...he was only supposed to be a KR/PR COP guy at Mich coming out HS too (he was not a highly regarded recruit out of HS). I know it is cliche, but the kid has a lot heart and seems to continuously prove his doubters wrong.

another Chris Perry, Tim B, and others out of the NFL in a few years
God I hate this. This is such lazy analysis. Just because they went to the same college means they are all the same? This is just like when people call any white reciever Ed Mcaffrey. Hart is a tough inside runner. He has great hands. He's one of the smartest players I've ever seen play at Michigan. He is a willing and very good blocker. He almost never fumbles - once in his career at U of M I think. He is tough, gutty, and a great leader. He lacks ideal size, top of the line speed, and a great wiggle, but he has EVERYTHING else you'd want, and he has it in spades.

Is he really that "tough". I see this alot, be he seems often banged up and has missed some games.this is all you need to know: He lacks ideal size, top of the line speed, and a great wiggle.

Tough is not just in regards to injury. He does not shy away from contact and has very good vision through the line. He has a knack for picking the right hole and making the most yardage in traffic. He will never be a top line RB, but IMO he will be a TD force in the NFL.

There's going to be some people in here who will eat their words.

When people say elite, are they meaning Lt2 elite or are they meaning Julius Jones elite who also is a starter.

In my opinion, Mike Hart will be a RB who will make it in the NFL. He's not your break away runner like your Tatum Bell's, he's a guy who sees the wholes quick, can make the initial guy miss, runs low and is an extremely tough runner.

Any team that's in need of a Rb with the things I mentioned will be fortunate to get him.

He's got an ankle sprain, it's not like an achilles. He basically needs a couple weeks off to let this heal but it's his senior season and Michigan is basically in a must win situation every game in terms of trying to make the Rose Bowl. The term "tough" doesn't mean that he could take on the entire football team, it's his style of running. He isn't afraid to attempt to run you over. He isn't afraid to run the ball up the middle. Meaning, he isn't a Reggie Bush type runner where you have to have a Deuce to handle the ball where things get tough. He can do that on his own.

Honestly the way alot of people describe him and knock him soulds alot like Priest Holmes. Priest had nothing elite about his game other than GREAT vision. No elite speed, no great wiggle, injury history and just plain. Priest had heart and a nose for the endzone plus he hooked up with Vermeil and became a super stud. Could the same happen with Hart? only time will tell.....

I can see this argument as his upside...I don't think he's going to make people miss very often in the NFL, but I've been wrong before.

L. Jordan, M. Hart, and T. Bell 2008 backfield for the Houston Texans!!!! Considering that we dont have a 2nd rounder I'd be please with this. lol

Analyzing Mike Hart for his NFL potential will be tricky. Lots of people make salient points in this thread, good and bad, but personally I'm much more on Iwannabeacowboy's side than the other side. Hart may lack wiggle, but he is one of the toughest RBs to tackle that I've ever seen come through Michigan or the Big Ten for that matter. He's not fast, but he's not dog slow either. He makes people miss, but he lacks wiggle. Someone compared him to Emmitt and, while I don't think he'll ever ascend to that level of greatness, he does possess many of the same characteristics. He's compact, has excellent vision, balance and an uncanny ability to get through the smallest of spaces. In other words, he's smallish, but he can make himself very small and very difficult to tackle when running between the tackles. He can also run outside the tackles though he may struggle in that area in the NFL.As someone else said above, he rarely fumbles. I don't think he fumbled until midway through his junior season, but would have to do research to confirm that statement. While it's easy to compare all Michigan backs, to state that Chris Perry isn't or wasn't tough is ridiculous, too. Anybody that carries the rock 40 to 50 times on multiple occassions is tough on many levels. He may be injury prone, but that should not be confused with toughness. It's apples and oranges. I remember when Braylon Edwards was coming out and there were the obligatory comparisons to David Terrell, too.Mike Hart is a solid runner and a great leader from a football perspective. I have no idea if he'll make it in the NFL, but when I see players like Earnest Graham, Kenny Watson, Selvin Young, Olandis Gary and Mike Bell get their shots, then I know that Mike Hart will at least have a decent chance to compete and take advantage of any opportunity that comes his way. If he's in a zone blocking scheme, I'm confident he would be productive.

Like the Terell and B. Edwards comparison........how about the Brady/Harbaugh

I think Harbaugh had a decent career. Nothing like Mr Brady of course. But after all Tommy was a 6th rounder.IWBAC, I just dont see Hart being an elite NFL RB. I havent seen too many non-UOFM homers say otherwise

for any college basketball fans out there...Mike Hart is the Mateen Cleaves of college football. (expect he can't win the big game)

Great heart, great intangibles, great leader, great college player. He'll get signed, then just fade away into the unemployed millionaires club.

Some folks knock his toughness, but I honestly think he has missed a lot of time because Carr has decided to rest him for Wisc. and OSU rather than let him play hurt. Carr does this all the time. Last year, he sat Manningham until the week before the OSU game when Mario probably could have come back earlier. We've seen him rest Henne in favor of Mallett (unless they start losing the game and Henne has to come in). Carr has been doing the same thing with Hart since he tweaked his ankle. Personally, I think it has done a great injustice to Hart. Hart was a Heisman candidate when he tweaked his ankle and Carr could have let him play the soft part of their schedule. But, Carr sat him and Hart won't be getting an invite to NYC for the Heisman ceremony now because of it. Hart came back as a senior when he didn't have to (his draft prospects this year are probably the same as last year) and he has been the best leader this team has. Carr has cost Hart the chance to comepte for one individual honor that could have rewarded him for his loyalty and leadership and increased his prominence.

ETA: He may not be a great NFL back, but I think he is tough, has good vision and is a good blocker. Some RBs have succeeded with less than what he has. He is a time will tell type guy--but I'll be rooting for him to succeed.

great commentary in here. The toughness I saw was not just his running style but his blocking. Great blocking desire and technique for a college feature back.

so much for toughness  ...the big ##### can't play today, he's hurt (familiar story)....there goes any hope of a share of the BT title MEECHIGAN...

Michigan backs(under Carr) always have the benefit of incredible size and strength with their offensive line. Hart is no different, he will find a place in the NFL, may even find himself starting for a year or two, but I'm passing on him...

BroncoFreak , you must be an Ohio State fan, there is no other way to hate on Hart that much. He is better than any Green Bay, Houston, Denver, Jet, Oakland, Cincinati, Cleveland, Chicago, or Seattle RB right now.

If Michigan beats Ohio State next week they win the big ten, genius. My guess is Carr would rather have a healthy Hart for that game than risking him against Wisconsin. The majority of people knocking Hart obviously don't watch him play at all. His distance-speed is not good, but his shiftiness and yards after contact are spectacular. For those saying he isn't tough and is always banged up...based on what? His high ankle sprain? Absolutely absurd. Peterson was a real #### in college too, I guess. Kiper has him currently as the 18th player on his big board, 1st among rbs.

He didn't play today so he would be ready for the game that matters. Why chance further injuring yourself in a game that doesn't matter? You ever wonder why playoff teams sit guys during the 17th week?I'm guessing he goes to Houston in the 2nd... he'll do well in thier scheme.

I see Mike Hart as a 3rd round pick in the NFL draft next year although some team will likely take a shot on him in the 2nd. He plays bigger than his size and he is an excellent blocker. His running style would be suitable to a zone blocking scheme. I don't think he is durable or fast enough to be a long term feature back, but he could be successful as a RB#2 in a RBBC. The one thing I really admire about Hart is his toughness. The guy is 5'9" and under 200lbs and I've seen him move some piles where lesser backs would have been stood up. Even though he is "small", he always seems to be able to push forward and get positive yardage when it counts. His low center of gravity and strong leg push seem to make up for his small stature. He generates more power than many backs who are much bigger. And some of his blocks will just leave you shaking your head as to how someone that small could produce such a big hit. And he always plays big in the spotlight. The guy is not a choker. He is a big game player. I think all of these traits add up to a successful albeit unspectacular NFL career.

 what he said.I do however think he will not test out well at the combine and may even slip to the late 3rd/early 4th. predicting 4.55 40 time 27 reps 225decent but not spectacular cone time.35" vert.I do however expect him to do good in the drills though.all that equaling unspectacular but you cant measure will and determination and I think that what gets him into the 3rd.(hopefully still there for the Texans)
